Trail Mix 10/29/08 -- Christmas from Hell edition
Yeah, it was just like Christmas this past week. Breathless anticipation. The calendar moved slower and slower and then the clock itself started to slow down. What would Santa bring? Look at all the awesome packages! They must be filled with with cool toys! It was going to be SOOOOOO great! And that long one over there has my name on it, and it rattles right and everything...
And then the moment comes, the paper is shredded. Underwear. Socks. School Clothes. A really bad book. More socks. A really terrible CD. And to make matters worse, that long anticipated BB gun just shot out one of the house windows and pop was so pissed that he smashed the thing.
Wow, was that last week waiting ever not worth it!!!
Okay, back to reality. We all saw the playoffs last year, did we not? Home teams blew out visiting teams. Then they switched venues and home teams blew out visiting teams. I'm sure each game can be microanalyzed by the basketball geeks. Team A didn't space right, and Team B broke them down; and Team A failed to execute its offense in this manner, whereas Team B was sheer genius on the other end of the floor. Bunk. Home teams beat the hell out of visiting teams. I think it's largely because they're used to the rims and the shooting environment... Microanalyze THAT.
The Blazers opened in LA, on the court of the best team in the NBA, finalists last year and odds-on faves for a return visit this year. And the Blazers got blown out. This is supposed to be a surprise? OF COURSE we got blown out! Twenty points is on the ugly end of the predicted range, but the smart guys in Vegas had it at 7.5, and discourse outside of Blazerland seemed to swirl around the low double digits.
Fortunately the season is 82 games long. Those of you predicting an 82-0 year for the Blazers this year stand formally corrected by reality. Now it's time to regroup since (contrary to Doug Collins' reports during the game) the home opener is NOT a back-to-back. There is time to regroup, and NBA teams love their home cooking...
Sorry for being so on-topic there. It won't happen again.
Oden medical watch begins. Place your bets now.
Beavers are getting back one of their offensive tackles after his being declared ineligible for a year. Ingested a banned substance contained in some over-the-counter diet pills. Sound familiar?
Speaking of the Beavs, DeCarolis is out of the hunt at Indiana. Much rejoicing in Corn Valley, I presume.
Speaking of good news: I finally figured out how to gamble on baseball. You don't bet on the game, you just wager large stakes on a simple "pick-'em" proposition: "Will they Manage to Finish the 2008 World Series in 2008"?
And, by the way, does anybody outside of Philadelphia CARE if they finish this thing? Is there a single BEdger who is distraught that their beloved Exorcized Rays are on the verge of losing the World Series, presumably, eventually, maybe? Sound off now.
The size of the reproductive organ of a certain Laker came up in the Game Day Open Thread yesterday and Tom in Hawaii missed his cue. He is officially AWOL. Where are ya, Tommy Boy?
Speaking of Tommy Boy, what's your favorite part of that movie?
Speaking of fat comedians, what's become of fatty? Have you switched up your screen name, oh great Round Mound of Fractured Nouns?
Full slate of games tonight. What games are you liking?
I'm actually getting sick of politics. It's the phone calls that are grinding me down. My brain has shut off the TV ads long ago. It's sorta like the ads for feminine hygiene products -- my ballot's in now, so I DON'T NEED ANY, THANK YOU.
Well, that's enough crap. Let's see if anybody beat me to the punch posting up one of these Junk Drawer dealies...
xoxo,

At Fred Myers at my family’s place in Tillamook on Black Friday, people LINE up to get Nike Socks for a dollar. 3 packs that are normally 8 bucks are a dollar and people LINE THE STREETS to get them. It is insane.

Bad, bad book
I got one last year. Still sitting there taking up space. It’s a hard back, and now (for some reason) it’s out in paperback, so there is absolutely no resale value at all. None.
What?
The game last night?
I don’t wanna talk about it.
Friday’s game? … that will have to wait until Friday.

I don’t have internet that often.
JC was just on ESPN, I think I’d punch him if I ever saw him in person. The only thing keeping me from punching him, is that I know he would find a way to make himself into a martyr. That guy is a serious DB. Looks like today is a good day to have limited access to the internet. I told my wife the sky would be falling here.
I can’t wait for Friday’s game.

Often that means afternoon East Coast time, but in this case I think it means Pacific Time, so probably not for another couple hours.
"For the past two seasons it's been like, 'They're young, they're going to need some time,"' Roy said. "It doesn't feel like that this season."

I have come to the conclusion that Nate will not win us a championship. I want him fired now before the players become too attached to him.
Nate is not a good coach and will not coach our championship team , especially if he ruins the team’s chances of getting there. Book it.

Ok, I noticed you in other threads
So I guess this IS serious. Hmmm…
Ya gotta slow down, relax, and not worry so much if ya can.
The PLAYERS played awful. It wasn’t Nate. Batum would have made no difference last night, not in a game where Oden gets hurt, Roy and LMA plays like crap, and the Lakers were very motivated to win.
Our players couldn’t hit a shot, couldn’t defend, and were so visibly nervous it made me feel bad for them.
You are blaming Nate for things out of his control. Nate is actually known to be a very good X’s and O’s coach, very good with his players, and good at reading and reacting. This was a bad start, but to blame anyone (let alone Nate) for this sort of game is way off.
Might as well fire KP for putting a bunch of Nervous Nancies out there!
One game, we can’t focus on it too much.

LOL I just checked my history and it seems as if I have called for the firing of Nate 4 times already today.
Maybe, just maybe Im overreacting. And of course, Nate doesnt deserve all the blame but Bajesus Marie and Josef he deserves most of it. I happen to think the decisions he made RE the starting lineup to player minutes during the game really affected the effectiveness of our best players. I mean, just last week, it is painfully obvious that a) Bayless is 3rd string behind Sergio, who played wonderfully and effectively in the 2nd unit and b) Travis belongs in the 2nd unit , is the SOUL of the 2nd unit. He doesnt belong on our starting unit, end of story. DUH…
I have no clue who will/can lead the PTB to a championship, Maybe Isaiah when he gets back from the ER and recovers from his suicide attempt.
I shouldn’t joke, or maybe I should. I need a drink.

Damon and sheed accessorizing help
I’m going to the game Friday dressed as Sheed and am being accompanied by a couple friends and the girl from this post dressed as Damon.
Now going as Damon and Sheed is somewhat funny, but to make it truly classic i feel we need to do some accessorizing to represent their love of herbal enhancers. I have a couple ideas already, but I’m looking for more so I can find the perfect addition to the costume.
The first comes from the last time I did this. All I did was roll a bunch of fake joints and stick them out of my head and wrist bands. But I’m thinking something a little more subtle as the girl is a straight arrow and I don’t want to force her to walk around with joints all night.
The other would be for her to carry around a big ball of tinfoil. The die hards would love it. The only problem is i don’t know if the people at the gate would find it as funny as we would and they might make us throw it away.
So please, suggest away.

Agreed
Rex has a better shot and Parker is more polished finishing at the rim.
But that’s exactly who he reminded me of too.

That "hack a Shaq"
In the first 2 seconds SA did as a joke was HILARIOUS.
When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".
Man I love him.

They just showed a highlight of Sleepy floyd on the golden State Game
and wow, that looked an awful lot like Brandon Roy.
I’ve heard the Big O too, but dang, Sleepy looks like a retro B-Roy

I am really glad I wasn't able to come in here today
I was feeling double wammied (Bad game and Oden injury). I just got back from the kids teacher conferences…all good on that front . I am not ready to write off the season or the big fella just yet. I just hope these guys will compete on Friday. I saw Canzano on 1st take this morning and heard him again on Fox Sports Radio…..when the hell did that yahoo become the voice of Portland? Yuk……they need to get Quick or someone to do that stuff.

Make that a lead of 30 late in the Q, 80-50. Kobe to the line to shoot 2.
………………………. It puts last night into context. Bear in mind this is 2nd night of a back-to-back for the Lakers…

Looks like
LAL will beat LAC by mo’ than 20 pts.
Score over a hundred & hold the Cclips to < 75 pts. On an away game, hehe

That's a pretty big advantage playing 4 "away" games in the same building...
