fgm-fga is the only real difference in this game

Easy to second guess Nate....

But I can’t see any tweak in rotation making a fundamental difference in this blowout. The Lakers are firing on all cylinders….and the Blazers can’t seem to even find their cylinders.

It almost looks like they’re the youngest team in the league (which they basically are) playing against the favored and defending conference champions, with the MVP, on the road (which they are).

Could be worse. I just hope, as you all do, that Oden is okay. My god.

Okay, here are my strong, over-the-top, whiskey-powered statements.

(1) Oden is overrated. I hope he’s only a little tweaked, but he was given the starting role too fast by Nate. He has proved absolutely NOTHING.

(2) Bayless should be the 4th guard, not Sergio. I don’t care if this team loses 50 games, that should be the guy because he’s gonna be a mass murderer once he learns the NBA game. Sergio is a washout.

(3) Rudy rocks.

(4) When Roy and LMA go cold simultaneously, the Blazers lose.

Bad night.

Game 1

Well, I guess that was the worst case scenario…

However, if we were going to lose one game, that is probably the best way to do it. First off, we know Roy and Aldridge are only going to play better. I thought Roy just had an off game. He had some easy shots, and just couldn’t get them to drop. As Phil said at halftime, it was not the defense, the Blazers just missed makeable shots. Aldridge was a little off his game, but the guys I was most worried about (Rudy, Outlaw) in terms of the importance to take the team to the next level, played well. I was msot pleased just watching the difference in strength between Oden and Bynum. Oden is already better than Bynum. Bynum has much less coordination. Just wait til Oden gets in shape, he will be much better than Bynum.

The whole Travis starting upsetting the chemistry/execution excuse is absurd IMO

It doesn’t matter who starts- units get mixed and matched anyway. We were flat out dominated, period.

Why are people keep making the knee excuses for him whenever it didn’t perform and when he did have just a ok game, people making him like the dominate player?

I am not blaming Greg. I understand he just had a surgery, but if he cannot performance cause of this knee, then bring he off the bench. At this point his offense isn’t good at all, if defense is his only strength right now. Joe can play defense and probably rebound better than Oden.

You ever had knee surgery?

I have. Your muscles go to nothing and conditioning is an uphill fight. You can blame Greg’s DNA, but I’m not sure you can blame Greg…

It's not the loss it's the way we lost.

Tentative. Stagnant on offense. Unable to hit open shots. Unable to stop drives to the basket on D. Over-reliance on outside shooting with few points in the paint. Few easy baskets. As Doug Collins said, it looked very much like the Blazer team of last year. Hmm.

We were probably going to drop a stinker in Game 1 no matter where or who we played. Too many young, nervous kids. Better that we didn’t “waste” a game by dropping such an opening night stinker against a weak opponent or a home game.

by iDea on Oct 28, 2008 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty Simple

Oden hurt his foot, got taped up and tried to run during halftime but it was too tender. He sat out, they don’t know anything about the nature of the injury right now, but Oden says he feels like he wanted to play and it is just “a little tender”

Other interesting moment was when they asked Oden how he felt when he was IN the game (just one person asked him this) all he said was “Man its crazy out there.”

They looked shellshocked, even Roy and Aldridge. When Roy goes 0-9 for 3 quarters and Aldridge only has 8 points on 4-12, we’re not gonna win. Good games from outlaw and rudy though. I can’t help but wonder if Oden’s injury didn’t completely screw Nate’s gameplan.

Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

by sixth on Oct 28, 2008 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Remember, Oden sucked before he went down. I’m not so sure he even hurt his foot. I think they kept him out in the second half to save him from any more embarrassment and to save his ego. I can’t figure out why Frye is even in the NBA. Rudy was fun to watch, glad Roy woke up.

It seems

that the pressure of being a savior is getting to Oden, as Quick suggested in his article.

Maybe having him come off the bench isn’t a horrible idea if, for no other reason, it helps him relax and play his game. He’s a tremendous physical specimen but – he’s also just a kid.

by knickfan on Oct 28, 2008 10:51 PM PDT reply actions

maybe

I didn’t think Oden was any worse than Bynum while they were both in the game. You are absolutely right that Oden needs to relax and play. I just don’t see how this game was that bad for Greg individually- 5 rebs and a block in 12 minutes.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Oct 28, 2008 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Bynum looked very bad on a few plays. The few times he tried to challenge Greg on offense, he looked horrid. Blocked once and threw up an awkward shot that missed the rim and careened off the backboard on another. He looked like he had no chance to score on G.O.

by Colgr88 on Oct 28, 2008 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

He needs to get his feet wet...and healthy.

Oden will be alright. What really surprised me, was how tentative some of our guys…Roy and Aldridge played. I didn’t expect them to have the deer in the headlights look.

lets be real for a second. we were all hyped up that the blazers were going to be a great team this year without having really proven anything yet, last year was fun but we didnt make the playoffs. we were playing the reigning western conference champs who are favored to win it all this year. did u really expect a win? OF COURSE U DID THATS WHY WERE FANS. but realistically we saw what a championship team looks like tonight and were building towards that and hopefully we can get there someday. we dont have to play the lakers every game of the season so no need to panic, we can still make the playoffs and see waht happens then.

nah...

your looking for the wrong things. You need to look at his base strength. Like Yao, guys have to go diagonal just to keep him from backing them under the hoop. Even poor Bynum looked like a ragdoll on a couple of those plays. Just give him a month or two to get into shape, and you will see teams have to double him constantly. He is just out of shape. If he can do that to Bynum, wait til he plays some smaller centers.

The most surprising aspect to me

was how rattled the team looked. Last year, they were the scrappy overachievers who never seemed to lose their composure, no matter how overmatched they were. Roy was masterful at dictating the pace of the game.

But tonight we saw none of that. It would have been one thing if they played their game and got beat. But after their 0-3 start, we never saw the team we watched tonight at any point last year. Tonight was a real regression.

by knickfan on Oct 28, 2008 11:04 PM PDT reply actions

I dunno knickfan

This team was blown out a number of times last year- lost 29 games by double digits.

I agree we didn’t see this complete “dear in the headlights” syndrome a lot last year, but it did happen.

If we see it again next time the Blazers get down early, I’ll be more concerned.

I'm not a young man anymore

and my memory is spotty at best.

But I cannot recall seing the Blazers look SCARED at any time last year. They may have lost as a result of being overmatched, or lackadasical, or poorly prepared. But tonight they just looked frightened. Their body language in the third quarter was alarming; kinda reminded me of my dog getting all submissive around the Alpha males at the bark park.

Just got back from St*ples Center

Awful. Just awful.

FWIW, I went into this thinking we had a shot. At worst losing by single digits. So I was definitely optimistic. But what I saw was a team that never got any flow except for a brief period in the third, when they closed the gap to 8. They seemed disjointed from the start of the game, like they were in the 4th and the L*kers just scored 20 and had all the momentum.

I’ve read the complaints about starting Outlaw, but frankly he was the entire offense. It would’ve been a lot worse much sooner without him. Nobody was hitting. Blake was just plain off, Roy and LMA didn’t seem to be taking good shots and Oden was pretty much doing what would be expected of a rookie starting his first NBA game.

Plus, I paid about almost 30 bucks for 3 cups of Bud Light.

Oh well, at least I got a free L*ker Opening Night t-shirt I can desecrate.

Besides Greg's health

What’s the worry? 61 minutes played by rookies. Your two usually reliable stars go 9-27. This is a looooong season and growth trajectory for the team. As expected.

As bad as the team played, had it been against Sacramento or Memphis, we’d be talking about a win right now.
