Let's go with a lineup of

and try Bayless of the bench. maybe some drives to the hoop will help

halftime stats are pretty even
ftm: blazers +1
reb: lal +3
ast: lal +2
stl: lal +1
blk: even
TO: por -1
fouls: por -4
fgm-fga is the only real difference in this game
por: 13-42
lal: 21-43
if not for the difference in shots falling this would be an even game

Also, I really would like to see an play on offense that isn’t a pick and roll or some sort of isolation. How about some cutting and movement?

Nate should have kept Batum in the starting line-up. Outlaw screws up that entire unit’s rhythm.

Easy to second guess Nate....
But I can’t see any tweak in rotation making a fundamental difference in this blowout. The Lakers are firing on all cylinders….and the Blazers can’t seem to even find their cylinders.
It almost looks like they’re the youngest team in the league (which they basically are) playing against the favored and defending conference champions, with the MVP, on the road (which they are).
Could be worse. I just hope, as you all do, that Oden is okay. My god.
I think starting Outlaw was a mistake.
But, having said that, it’s not an excuse for this game.

And he will be correct, as always.
This loss would hurt more IF our 3 were playing DECENT and we still were getting our butt kicked.

Just have Ben write it.

I don't like Phil at all
But he’s right. He basically said Portland beat themselves and the Lakers just watched.
Okay, here are my strong, over-the-top, whiskey-powered statements.
(1) Oden is overrated. I hope he’s only a little tweaked, but he was given the starting role too fast by Nate. He has proved absolutely NOTHING.
(2) Bayless should be the 4th guard, not Sergio. I don’t care if this team loses 50 games, that should be the guy because he’s gonna be a mass murderer once he learns the NBA game. Sergio is a washout.
(3) Rudy rocks.
(4) When Roy and LMA go cold simultaneously, the Blazers lose.
Bad night.

Tonight, LMA made Blog-a-bull squeal with glee.
Yeah, Tom will have some explaining to do

yup, personally i think LMA usually play fairly close to as well as Gasol, but not tonight
remember, remember the fifth of November
You know what after watching that play again...
Bynum threw Oden to the floor on the play that Oden hurt his foot. Bynum should pay for that! One more reason to hate the Lakers. Not that I needed anymore.
Looks like the Blazers
had George Jefferson out there for them tonight
I really think
If they want protect Oden he should come off the bench cuz its less pressure. Thrilla rebounds better and got more experience.
Uhhhh nope
Having Oden off the bench for Joel Pryzbilla makes everyone look bad.
Oden has to deal with it, and he will.
I actually think Oden looked ok
He made that great spin move and just didn’t have the composure to finish. He had 5 rebounds in 12 minutes and played Bynum to a standstill. I’m concerned about his foot, not about his debut.
Boomshakalaka
He was boarding
And for having a yucky looking foot sprain he really did look ok.
He just needed MORE everything… more time, no injuries, just to put the worries and whispers to rest for the team and for himself.
He just needed to SCORE to feel good…
The spin was nice, and that block was awesome.

I think
Portland made them look a LOT better than they really are tonight.
I still don’t think they make it back to the Finals this year.
And Houston as a dark horse
if Yao stays healthy.
those teams are good
but not in the Lakers class.
The Lakers were the best in the west last year, and Pau and Bynum never played together. The Lakers are a pretty significant step above those other teams.
Boomshakalaka
I'm not ready to crown them after one game.
We were horrible tonight. No confidence. We were flat out intimidated. Looked younger than we are already are.
Forget Protecting him...
just let him out of his cage and play…if he gets injured, so be it…that’s life as an athlete ….who plays well while they think of injuries and being held back?
i'm saying stop babying the guy
and we play like it….blazers look like a bunch of half court robots until we have 1 second on the shot clock…just ball…our half court offense is horrid if LA can’t hit the 10 footers
Game 1
Well, I guess that was the worst case scenario…
However, if we were going to lose one game, that is probably the best way to do it. First off, we know Roy and Aldridge are only going to play better. I thought Roy just had an off game. He had some easy shots, and just couldn’t get them to drop. As Phil said at halftime, it was not the defense, the Blazers just missed makeable shots. Aldridge was a little off his game, but the guys I was most worried about (Rudy, Outlaw) in terms of the importance to take the team to the next level, played well. I was msot pleased just watching the difference in strength between Oden and Bynum. Oden is already better than Bynum. Bynum has much less coordination. Just wait til Oden gets in shape, he will be much better than Bynum.
WHAT A BUST!!!!
If tonight game is any indication of the so called up and coming talented team, you can pretty much take kiss playoff goodbye and back to the lottery. The performance is so bad, I have to turn off the TV and do something else by the end of 3rd quarter.
The BIG three performance is bad, they looked like a 2nd round pick player. Oden looked like a big stiff and overweight.
The only good out of this game is RUDY, RUDY!!!!
Hey
the draft has been the most exciting part of the Blazers’ season anyway.
Another year in the lottery would be a GOOD thing.
knickfan
the draft was NOT the most exciting part of last season. Last season had some phenomenal moments, and some rough ones. Another year in the lottery would not be a good thing. I like most of your posts, but this one is a bit ridiculous. Its one game against the best team in the league.

positives
1) Rudy
2) Roy seeing the ball go through the hoop a few times in the 2nd half
3) Outlaw playing a decent game

wheels sounds like its the end of the world
when the opposing team cans a routine jumper.
he’s the most bipolar play by play man in the biz.
GO had good rebounding effort
5 boards in 13 minutes.
That bettered both TO & LMA who both had 2X the minutes.
I don't put much weight in +/-
But it’s telling that the team leader was Bayless at +1.. that’s right, everybody else was negative
On the other hand
He was 1 for 5 from the field and had two turnovers and no assits in 14.5 minutes — not good numbers.

Even in the worst possible scenario
that they have to amputate Oden’s foot, it’s not the end of the world. They’ve made a lot of progress in cyborg technology.
Painful Truth?
Some great bigs never really get to reach their potential because they’re injury-prone. At least three of them were Blazers: Bill Walton, Sam Bowie and Lloyd Neal. It’s beginning to look like we’ll have four.

Lakers played awesome D in the first half
We made them look better than they were, but they were everywhere.
Boomshakalaka
Not according to Phil
He said the Blazers kept getting open looks but couldn’t get them to fall. He claimed the Lakers had little to do with the Blazers lack of offensive success.
interesting
we did miss some good looks, but when Roy would get by one guy, they were waiting for him. When Greg got the ball, they were ready.
I didn’t hear Phil’s thoughts, but I did think the Laker D was good— and so did Doug Collins.
I guess we can all agree that the Blazers were awful.

It's gonna be hard to deal with the all the questions and articles tomorrow

Why are people keep making the knee excuses for him whenever it didn’t perform and when he did have just a ok game, people making him like the dominate player?
I am not blaming Greg. I understand he just had a surgery, but if he cannot performance cause of this knee, then bring he off the bench. At this point his offense isn’t good at all, if defense is his only strength right now. Joe can play defense and probably rebound better than Oden.
You ever had knee surgery?
I have. Your muscles go to nothing and conditioning is an uphill fight. You can blame Greg’s DNA, but I’m not sure you can blame Greg…

It's not the loss it's the way we lost.
Tentative. Stagnant on offense. Unable to hit open shots. Unable to stop drives to the basket on D. Over-reliance on outside shooting with few points in the paint. Few easy baskets. As Doug Collins said, it looked very much like the Blazer team of last year. Hmm.

Pretty Simple
Oden hurt his foot, got taped up and tried to run during halftime but it was too tender. He sat out, they don’t know anything about the nature of the injury right now, but Oden says he feels like he wanted to play and it is just “a little tender”
Other interesting moment was when they asked Oden how he felt when he was IN the game (just one person asked him this) all he said was “Man its crazy out there.”
They looked shellshocked, even Roy and Aldridge. When Roy goes 0-9 for 3 quarters and Aldridge only has 8 points on 4-12, we’re not gonna win. Good games from outlaw and rudy though. I can’t help but wonder if Oden’s injury didn’t completely screw Nate’s gameplan.
Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.
Hmmm
Remember, Oden sucked before he went down. I’m not so sure he even hurt his foot. I think they kept him out in the second half to save him from any more embarrassment and to save his ego. I can’t figure out why Frye is even in the NBA. Rudy was fun to watch, glad Roy woke up.
i hope not
i would rather it be foot injury than him being a head case like vince young

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Oden looked really sad and frustrated in his interview
who can blame him?
It seems
that the pressure of being a savior is getting to Oden, as Quick suggested in his article.
Maybe having him come off the bench isn’t a horrible idea if, for no other reason, it helps him relax and play his game. He’s a tremendous physical specimen but – he’s also just a kid.
maybe
I didn’t think Oden was any worse than Bynum while they were both in the game. You are absolutely right that Oden needs to relax and play. I just don’t see how this game was that bad for Greg individually- 5 rebs and a block in 12 minutes.
Boomshakalaka
Exactly.
Bynum looked very bad on a few plays. The few times he tried to challenge Greg on offense, he looked horrid. Blocked once and threw up an awkward shot that missed the rim and careened off the backboard on another. He looked like he had no chance to score on G.O.
He needs to get his feet wet...and healthy.
Oden will be alright. What really surprised me, was how tentative some of our guys…Roy and Aldridge played. I didn’t expect them to have the deer in the headlights look.
flashback: last season
while we did play well on opening night (losing a competitive game to the Spurs), we were dominated the next two nights. We were 0-3, then 5 and 12.
Boomshakalaka
the Mikes note that
people are going to be jumping off the Blazer bandwagon. Maybe that will be a good thing for this team.

im not worried
lets be real for a second. we were all hyped up that the blazers were going to be a great team this year without having really proven anything yet, last year was fun but we didnt make the playoffs. we were playing the reigning western conference champs who are favored to win it all this year. did u really expect a win? OF COURSE U DID THATS WHY WERE FANS. but realistically we saw what a championship team looks like tonight and were building towards that and hopefully we can get there someday. we dont have to play the lakers every game of the season so no need to panic, we can still make the playoffs and see waht happens then.
The Mike's both pretty well tashing the decision to start Outlaw
calling it a panic move that disrupted the flow of both first and second units, mentioned a couple of blown plays by travis early in the game.
Yep
Starting Travis was a huge mistake…….
Can't believe the negativity...
Forget about Roy and Aldridge, they will be fine.
Rudy! Rudy is a starter in the NBA right now.
Oden looked much stronger than Bynum. He will be a top 5 center by Christmas.
I’m raising my prediction to 50 wins, based on what I saw in Oden and Rudy.
he had 5 rebounds and a block in 12 minutes
he was bad on offense but geez horrid is going a little too far.
Boomshakalaka
Yep
He does shut down the paint, I will give him that
nah...
your looking for the wrong things. You need to look at his base strength. Like Yao, guys have to go diagonal just to keep him from backing them under the hoop. Even poor Bynum looked like a ragdoll on a couple of those plays. Just give him a month or two to get into shape, and you will see teams have to double him constantly. He is just out of shape. If he can do that to Bynum, wait til he plays some smaller centers.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard them criticize Nate before.
Boomshakalaka
Nate
The players sure like Nate and respond to him well, but man he makes some bonehead moves
The most surprising aspect to me
was how rattled the team looked. Last year, they were the scrappy overachievers who never seemed to lose their composure, no matter how overmatched they were. Roy was masterful at dictating the pace of the game.
But tonight we saw none of that. It would have been one thing if they played their game and got beat. But after their 0-3 start, we never saw the team we watched tonight at any point last year. Tonight was a real regression.
I dunno knickfan
This team was blown out a number of times last year- lost 29 games by double digits.
I agree we didn’t see this complete “dear in the headlights” syndrome a lot last year, but it did happen.
If we see it again next time the Blazers get down early, I’ll be more concerned.
Boomshakalaka
Yea and it happened several times against good teams on the road.

I'm not a young man anymore
and my memory is spotty at best.
But I cannot recall seing the Blazers look SCARED at any time last year. They may have lost as a result of being overmatched, or lackadasical, or poorly prepared. But tonight they just looked frightened. Their body language in the third quarter was alarming; kinda reminded me of my dog getting all submissive around the Alpha males at the bark park.
yea not scared

Just got back from St*ples Center
Awful. Just awful.
FWIW, I went into this thinking we had a shot. At worst losing by single digits. So I was definitely optimistic. But what I saw was a team that never got any flow except for a brief period in the third, when they closed the gap to 8. They seemed disjointed from the start of the game, like they were in the 4th and the L*kers just scored 20 and had all the momentum.
I’ve read the complaints about starting Outlaw, but frankly he was the entire offense. It would’ve been a lot worse much sooner without him. Nobody was hitting. Blake was just plain off, Roy and LMA didn’t seem to be taking good shots and Oden was pretty much doing what would be expected of a rookie starting his first NBA game.
Plus, I paid about almost 30 bucks for 3 cups of Bud Light.
Oh well, at least I got a free L*ker Opening Night t-shirt I can desecrate.
That one's on you...
