Do Not Start Batum Against Lakers Tomorrow

There's been alot of debate recently on who will start at small forward in the absence of Martell Webster. There have been alot of propositions such as starting Outlaw, starting Rudy, putting Roy at small forward and starting Rudy at shooting guard, and starting Batum. The dilemma does not seem to be solved as of yet.

However, what the Blazers and Coach McMillian are crucially missing is the fact that the Blazers have the option to play whatever style they like and do not have to conform to other teams lineups. This year, we are in control of the pace and it should be our duty to exploit the necessary match-ups. Our bench from top to bottom is as deeper than most teams and we should be the pace setters in determining how the opponents play. In short, we should be able to dictate the play and flow of the game without contorting to conforming to other teams play and flow.  There is no more of changing to smaller, quicker lineups just because an opposing team has a quicker team on the floor. We can play big or small, slow or fast, and it should be our mentality to attack the opponent and let them adjust to us and not us adjust to them.

I believe this is an important psychological advantage that is implicit but necessary for winning teams to have. Looking at championship caliber teams, such as the Spurs, they have always played their own style of basketball making opponents change their strategy in accordance to their style of play. Teams have always adjusted to them. It's psychologically effective for a team to have other teams adjust to them as it gives a sense of control and stability to the game. Players need to feel the control they have in the game and be able to adjust accordingly.

Star-divide

So what does this have to do with tomorrow night's game? Well, the debate on who should start at small forward seems to be raging on and it seems our focus is who is best suited for the first unit. However, our mentality should be instead, "how can we exploit the opponents (the Lakers) defense and maximize our potential?" In other words, why not let them adjust to us?

The Lakers have a starting unit of Bynum, Gasol, Radmanovic, Kobe, and Fisher. Were Batum to start he would inevitably be matched with Radmanovic. Radmanovic is listed at a height of 6'10. Batum is 6'8. Batum also gives up 40 lbs to Radmanovic. Although Batum's length and athelticism could play a factor in defending Radmanovic, on offense, he seems a little spotty and inconsistent.

In order to stretch the defense of the Lakers, it would make sense for McMillan to start Channing Frye for tomorrow night's game. Channing is 6'11 and nearly identical in weight to Radmanovic and has the ability to hit the outside shot on a consistent basis. Although it seems unlikely to have such a lengthy team on the floor as it would crowd the paint, the ability of Frye to shoot the open jumper is a critical factor. Plus, Frye's defense on Radmanovic would negate his offense as Radmanovic rarely shoots anything besides jumpers and three-pointers.

Batum is not ready to handle the pressure of an opening night game. Put Channing in and lets see the Blazers stretch the floor and shoot lights out against the Lakers.

Okay, I won't start him

But that Nate guy, I don’t have any say over what he does.

Leave Batum on the bench

His arms are so long, he’ll still be able to block some shots.

by pualo on Oct 27, 2008 3:35 PM PDT reply actions

Indeed,

Rad-man is 2" taller, but Batum has him by 2" on the wingspan. Seems like a wash to me.

Inarguably Batum has less experience, but he’ll be fine.

You're worried about Count Vlad?

I think if the Lakers decide to use him as option #1 instead Kobe, Gasol, or Bynum, that would be great for the Blazers. Vlad is not a post player, he’s like a taller, worst BB IQ, and less accurate James Jones.

Batum may start, but he’s not going to play more than 15 minutes unless he has a good game.

I sort of agree

I would love to see Frye or Aldridge at the 3 sometime this year, but there is probably more to it than who guards who. I wonder if the Blazer’s defensive zones and offense schemes hurt Frye’s chances. Like does the 3 have to run around picks on the offense for misdirection, or does Frye know where the 3 is suppose to be in all of the zone schemes. How much does the Xs and Os affect Frye playing at the 3?

I'm not worried about Batum's defense

Radmanovic does not scare anyone.
I am worried about the offense, but let’s hope everything goes well.
I think Batum was the best choice, but Webster would have been son much better….

the problem with this

Is Channing has no experience at the 3

Yeah, I mean, if Channing has no experience playing that position,

is it really any better than playing a rookie who has been preparing to play the 3? I don’t think so.

If we truly are in control of the pace

and can truly play big or small, why respond to a big, slow Laker line-up by going bigger ourselves. You had me expecting a cunning plan to go uptempo in response to the plodding Bynum/Gasol/Rad front line. Why not experiment with pushing the pace a little?

by JMoon on Oct 27, 2008 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

Furthermore, why not start Sergio and Trout in place of Blake and Batum

LA is an unusual team with a fluid half-court offense, but one of the slowest front lines in the league. Getting back in transition is not a strength for them. Vlad can’t guard many of the 3’s in the league and Batum may be one of the few (at least at this point in his career). However, he’d have a tough time keeping up with Trout, especially in the full court. While Sergio’s D always causes me concern, Fish is probably one of the few PG’s who won’t kill him, and Sergio pushes the ball up the floor better than anyone else on the team.

I realize this won’t happen…just brainstorming.

by JMoon on Oct 27, 2008 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Trout a defender????

He will also get a chance in Tuesday’s game. Pay closer attention this time.

Trout may bring a better offensive game than Batum but, remember
we are talking DEFENSE in this thread.
When you wonder why Batum is starting in future games …. it’s for his DEFENSIVE capability.

I've never called Trout a great defender

but still don’t think he’d be threatened by the innocuous Vlad

by JMoon on Oct 27, 2008 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

He'll do fine.

He doesn’t need the ball. He won’t lose the game for us there. He’ll get some rebounds, grab a loose ball or two, play good defense, and let our other guys do the offensive damage.

He’ll do fine.

If Radmanovic

ever tried posting up his defender, the height and weight issues you mention would be valid.

But he doesn’t, so……

by Storyteller on Oct 27, 2008 4:24 PM PDT reply actions

Guarding Vlad shouldn't be a problem

I think that if Batum doesn’t get overwhelmed he could learn A LOT. He’ll be on the court with one of the best players in the game and he’ll see a top notch offensive up close. He’s going to be vulnerable, but if he keeps his wits about him and soaks it all in he’ll get a great start on improving his game.

True

This is the first of many games against taller offensive players that Batum would face this year.

Who do you think will guard Durant? Roy or Rudy? I don’t think so.

NOW (early in the season) is the time to sharpen Batum skills.

Vlad Rad makes his living burying open corner shots

If Nic can take those away by just staying with him and not leave him open by collapsing inside to help out (leave that to the two bigs), he will be fine. I’m not sure Radmanovic will start over Odom, but if he does he is one of the least scary forwards the Blazers will face in the next weeks. He is not very athletic, rarely drives inside and also a rather bad defender and rebounder (one of Nic’s jobs will be to help on offensive rebounds). Basically he is a broke man’s Peja Stojakovic.

Channing starting at the 3

This was my idea (only against taller SFs) but it doesn’t appear to have gained any traction with the coaching staff

We can play big or small, slow or fast, and it should be our mentality to attack the opponent and let them adjust to us and not us adjust to them.

Coach Nate is not Don Nelson, nor will he ever be. You will have to deal with this fact in your own way

Yes it was.

I really ant to see this at some point also. They probably haven’t got too it yet with Frye just making it back. I think we’ll see it experimented with at some point during the season. Just a guess.

Perhaps it's 'cause I'm a traditionalist, but ...

Channing Frye is strictly a power forward in my book. Frye, without question, is best utilized as a mid-range jump shooter; he thrives whenever facing the basket around the high-post from 15 to 18 feet away from the hoop. Yet, on the other hand, Frye lacks the skill to cut or slash down the baseline — as well as shoot effectively from beyond the arc on the weakside at the wing and corner — thus, putting him at small forward would totally bog down the half-court offense by clogging the lane. Also, the opposition could just combat it with a 2-3 zone defense; that’d entirely shut down the frontcourt offense and, as a result, force Brandon Roy and Steve Blake to chuck ill-advised three-pointers out of the offensive flow. All in all, it’s a downright horrible idea to consider playing Frye out of position at the 3.

by AK1984 on Oct 27, 2008 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it just depends on your offense.

Having a midrange shooter at the 3 might work well in a Triangle offense, or any offense that heavily utilizes multiple posts.

NOTE: I am not advocating that we do a triangle offense or any other craziness of the type, just sayin’ it could work.

by everett on Oct 27, 2008 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions

We can play big or small, slow or fast, and it should be our mentality to attack the opponent and let them adjust to us and not us adjust to them.

playing fast is a whole different mentality; it isn’t just running. it’s completely intricate. teams like memphis and indiana try to subscribe to the philosophy but can’t get it done because it’s a complicated method of coaching beyond their resources and all the players have to understand the system and have high bball iqs to execute the tenets of the coaching philosophy. fast-breaking is a way of life; not a whim. it is difficult to have a versatile team too, that mixes it up. but i have faith in the blazers to subscribe to their system and develop some strong on court rapport. espn’s power rankings had them at 14, i think that’s crazy. and the cavs were 4!

by steelekord on Oct 27, 2008 5:40 PM PDT reply actions

Why play any short guys at all?

Przybilla vs. Mihm
Oden vs. Bynum
Aldridge vs. Gasol
Frye vs. Odom
Randolph vs. Radmanovic

No player shorter than 6’10". I’d pay to see that.

Coach Stan Van Gundy is quoted as saying in a matchup between a taller guy and a quicker guy he would always use the quicker one.

I wouldn’t agree with him in all situations, but just sending out an “All-Bigger” squad won’t win you the game.
