Interesting Hoopsworld Chat...

This morning I strolled over to Hoopsworld and saw that Bill Ingram was holding a chat session. I asked him the famous "Who should we target?" question. Keep in mind this guy has a hard time shedding his Texas roots in his journalism (admittedly a Rockets fan, and pictured wearing a Mavs shirt and hat). Also keep in mind during one question's response he lists the eight Western Conference playoff teams and we don't make the cut. He also chose the Timberwolves as the Darkhorse outside of those eight teams. He also specified that Bynum would have a much better night than Oden. If this chat still holds any weight with you, here is the question and response:

Noah in Portland Or:
Who should the Blazers target with all them dollars next year? Who is the available missing piece? Bill Ingram:
Alright - last question everyone. Gotta run. Missing piece in Portland . . .umm . . .they're missing a piece??? Well, OK, they need to solidify the three. How about SHAWN MARION????? Wow . . .think about THAT for a minute. Thanks for stopping by everyone - have a great week and enjoy opening night! ____________________________________________________________ Initial reaction? Blehk. After some thought, I realized he has always been a strong defender, we could offer him a nice deal, and he would be in the playoffs with a great team. The questions would be, would he be a cancer? Could he accept being option number four in the offense? What do you think? Please be more creative than "He's immature and a locker room cancer." Because we all know that, and I actually think Roy has a strong enough personality and the rest of the team has bought in. After a few weeks of one tumor being in our locker room, the rest of the guys would make him feel stupid and I think he would have an attitude adjustment. So?

The marion question has been tossed back and forth quite a bit...

And, it seems doubtful you are going to get a lot of buyers in this crowd. I think he had some great seasons in Phoenix, but It is hard for me to get settled with a guy who seems unwilling to ride a little pine for the greater good. Marion’s head would certainly fit on the Blazers, but would not help it.

Clarification

I mean his head would fit, because there is so little ego on our team that we could accommodate his, not that he would be in good company

by everett on Oct 27, 2008 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

And the worst part is

He wasn’t even RIDING any pine!

Marion was playing as many minutes as he could handle, and was the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER on a team with Amare and Nash. He really had no reason to complain.

The Mike and Mike have hinted at hearing even worse stories about Marion from PHX insiders, and his whining and malcontentness just ain’t gonna fit (let alone his age). It’s a horrible shame, because he was/is a terrific player.

He got a lot of credit for their success, and he was compensated thusly, yet still felt like he was under-respected. It’s crazy talk.

yeah, he really wasn't,

really a weird deal… He must have some insecurities, or something. I suppose he may just be a selfish jerk.

He's said to not care about winning, but about stats and $

While there’s nothing wrong with caring about money, there’s something very, very wrong with not caring about winning. Anyone that liked being on Miami last year better than Phoenix is simply out of the question.

From a purely skill viewpoint, Marion would be AWESOME. Unfortunately, he’s a loser

Best fit would be...

Tayshaun Prince. Defense. Decent perimeter shooter. Unselfish player. Proven winner at the highest level. Imagine THAT!

by JasonT on Oct 27, 2008 11:36 AM PDT reply actions

I think the point is

Prince isn’t really available, while Marion is. I’m not advocating for Marion by any means, but the only way we get Prince is if we give up one of the big 3, or if Detroit completely flops and decides to blow up the team.

That's the kind of response

that you’d expect from someone who only thinks about the Blazer’s roster for 2 seconds, then burps out an answer

Marion = clubhouse cancer who is only looking out for “his own” interests

Marion puts

the “ass” in “pass”
which is what I’m sure KP will do with offers for him.
Why work so hard to fill the team with good quality and character guys that will sacrifice for each other only to bring in Marion?

That is a green comment for sure.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Go GREEN young man!

Any “anonymous” front office quotes, even from a GM, are hogwash and baloney.

That’s when they are using a reporter to get a story/POV/lie out to hurt another team or further an agenda.

If Miles is healthy, he’ll be signed. If he ain’t able to play, he won’t. Whatever the Blazers say doesn’t matter at this point when any team could sign him if they wanted to or if he was still talented enough.

BAH PHOOEY.

Considering Ingram is picking Minnesota

ahead of Portland, why pay any attention to his opinion?

Portland does not need any missing piece. We have 4 players in the starting lineup who are all potential All-Stars. The only starter who isn’t – Blake – is a near perfect fit for this team and, btw, happened to be the starting point on a NCAA National Champion. In other words, he already has that champion stamp.

What about role players, you say? What about them? A potential RoY / 6th Man in Fernandez, a big, physical rebounder and defensive center in Pryz, an instant offense get his shot anytime forward in Outlaw. A long, smooth lottery pick big just entering his prime and an exciting young pass oriented PG who appears as if he’s finally getting a handle on the game. We haven’t even gotten to our two new rookies – Bayless and Batum.

Anyone saying we still need that missing piece is trying to sound like they know basketball, but really don’t as well as they think. This team only needs one thing – time playing together. We don’t need some crafty veteran – at least not yet. And it’s likely that by the time we do, our own guys will already have gained that experience. We don’t need that lockdown defender or a top 5 PG. Just game time. Fortunately for all of us, that starts tomorrow.

Marion will be a rent-a-player this year...

……………………….. and will want multimillionmegabucks for big years after that.

Highly dubious that he’s “the guy.”

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
