Picking Up Options
Just read an article on ESPN about the blazers picking up options on Roy, LaMarcus, and Oden. We also picked up the option on Sergio. Do you think that this was always the plan? Or has his improvement this preseason helped influence the blazers plans? I personally think it is a good move to keep him under his rookie contract as long as possible.
PS I am so ready for the season to start. The next three days are going to seem like forever. Can't we just skip ahead to winning are first ten games. GO BLAZERS

Jason T
beat you in the fanshots as well.
As far as your poll question goes, always planned seems like it could include the first time Sergio practiced for the Blazers. “Did the Blazers plan to pick up Sergio’s contract option before his strong preseason showing?” Just my 2 cents.
Does anyone know how lovely Spain is this time of year?

A young promising player with a bad soph year?
Of course they were going to pick him up all along.

Who voted no?
Really? This is about as no-brainer as you get. You don’t let an asset walk after 3 years just to save $1.2 million on the cap. Even if he came back worse than he left last spring, you still pickup this option. Having his contract to throw into a trade alone is worth keeping him for, and a $1.2 million dollar throw in with his “upside” is a pretty decent trade chip.

Sergio has looked strong so far
and energized Rudy . . or got energized BY Rudy .. He looked confident on the floor..from listening to you all out here, it seems that you are noticing improvement as well .
I can’t speculate at what point in time the decision was made, but it certainly is the proper one at this time . . .

What About Webster and Frye’s opions are they going to pick up thier opions.Or is it offers for contracts they have to give them by a set date in order to keep them next year. If somebody heard or knows something about these two players contracts please let us know what you know.

The Blazers have until October 31 (may be 28th this year, due to early start) to sign extensions with any of Frye, Diogu, or Webster. If not, then they will become RFAs next summer, assuming the Blazers offer them the Qualifying Offer at that time.

Webster was an outside shot for an extension this fall
the injury clouds the picture, but there is probably knot enough value percieved to lock him up beyond this year. The Blazers can extend a qualifying offer next summer and match any outside offers if the choose.

then once he becomes a resticted free agent
we lose the ability to resign him over the cap?
:( this makes me sad.

no, we keep it
assuming we extend the QO, we have his Bird Rights and can match any offer next summer regardless of cap situation.

not sure
I’ve read that Outlaw’s contract is guaranteed for 09-10, but I’ve also read that (like Blake), there is a team option on the 09-10 year.
If it is the former, or we pickup the option, then after 09-10, we can use Bird rights to sign Outlaw to any amount we want. However, he will also be unrestricted at that time, and can sign with any team he wants—we don’t get a chance to match.
If it is the latter, and we don’t pickup the option then he will be unrestricted next summer and can sign anywhere.

Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw ...
have non-guaranteed salaries for the 2009-2010 season — which’re worth $4,000,000 and $3,600,000, respectively — that’ll become fully guaranteed if they aren’t waived by 6/30/2009.
