Von Wafer makes Rocket's regular season roster
Ex-blazer Von Wafer had some nice games for the Rockets during preseason and managed to make their final 14-man roster(they want to leave one spot open).

I'm surprised that ...
Von Wafer wasn’t waived like Mike Harris and D.J. Strawberry, with the ageless Dikembe Mutombo being re-signed to add depth at center. The Houston Rockets will apparently go with two shorter pivotmen behind 7’5" Yao Ming (i.e., 6’6" Chuck Hayes & 6’7" Joey Dorsey), who make up for their lack of size with stout defense.
Furthermore, with Tracy McGrady, Brent Barry, and Luther Head ahead of Wafer at shooting guard, it’s hard to envision him getting any playing time whatsoever. Instead of suiting up for games, I expect that Wafer will be sitting in street clothes next to the washed-up Steve Francis. That, however, is an easy way to earn $826,269.
They can still sign Mutombo
The Rockets left a spot open, so they can sign a center like Mutombo without cutting anyone. I have read speculation that they plan on re-signing Mutombo, but want to sign him in the middle of the season rather than at the start (for cap reasons?).
Yeah, the Houston Rockets are strained financially due to the luxury tax; yet, you might be right ...
about how the Rockets will waive Von Wafer come early January and, in turn, sign Dikembe Mutombo.
Who wants to sign Mutombo?

The Houston Rockets should want to re-sign Dikembe Mutombo, ...
particularly for insurance purposes in case Yao Ming gets hurt this season.
They should sign a real backup center anyway
Yao moves gingerly, and his current backups are all smaller and thinner than say Channing or Shavlik.

Chuck Hayes and Joey Doresy aren't thinner than Channing Frye or Shavlik Randolph.
Still, you’re right that the Houston Rockets desperately need a backup center on its roster.
