Blazers 2008-09 Season Predictions

Now that the preseason is over, and Dave has done his final Preview of the team, it is time for us all to put down our Final, (meaning you can't change them anymore!) season predictions for the team. As Dave's said in his post, these are meaningless, however I feel they are very fun to try and get right! So first here is some information, (stats!) to help everyone decide on their predictions.

Preseason stat link: http://www.nba.com/blazers/stats/

Using these stats, as well as last season stats for a minutes baseline, I have run the numbers to show what each players season would look like if he simply played like he did in the preseason. (Yes I know this is not perfectly reliable, but it is just meant as some info to help everyone with their predictions, don't take it as the bible).

Stat:     Min      PTS     AST     REB     STL     BLK    TO       FG%    3PT% FT%

Blake   29.9     10.8     5.2       1.5       2.2       0          .7         48        36        67

ROY    37.7     22.2     5.0       2.7       2.7       0          2.0       60        64        56

Batum  15.0     5.3       1.1       2.3       .6         1.0       .7         43        36        60

LMA    34.9     19.1     2.3       7.8       1.8       .8         1.0       47        0          71

Oden    30.0     14.6     1.7       9.9       .6         1.1       3.2       58        0          66

Rudy    27.2     11.1     3.7       3.1       2.4       0          3.1       46        35        100

Travis   21        8.3       .7         3.0       1.0       .9         .5         37        36        76

Frye     15        6.2       .6         3.6       0.0       .4         0          44        100      63

Joel      18        5.1       0          6.2       0.0       1.1       1.1       67        0          57

Sergio  20        5.1       5.7       1.7       1.3       0.0       2.1       38        37        50

*Web   22.6     13.0     .9         6.9       1.7       .9         .9         63        25        100

*Webster only played in 1 game so his numbers are very debateable.

Some minutes projections were based soley on what I thought a player would play, while others were just takin off of what they did last year, (like Roy's 37.7)

I think these are a possible outcome, however  few things I will change for my prediction.

How did webster average

.9 assists, 6.9 reb, 1.7 stl, .9 blocks, and .9 turnovers if he only played in one game?

just to clear it up in case anyone else has the same question.

I took each players preseason stats, the did the math to adjust them based on the minutes I projected them to play in the regular season. Some played less in the preseason than they will in the regular season, (roy/oden/lma) while some played much more, (sergio/frye/etc). The minutes I decided on by taking the top 10 guys from last year, (based on minutes) adding up those minutes to get a base line. Then I did a top 10 this year, (projected, because of injury to web there are 11 players listed) put in the minutes that our returning players played last season, with some adjustments for new roles. For example I reduced Outlaws minutes from just over 27, to 21 per game, the same from Frye, and Joel. While Sergio minutes I adjust up for his new position as the main back up PG. For the rookies, I simply took what has been reported as a goal for the players, like getting Oden about 30 a game, and playing Rudy as much as possible off the bench. So that is how I came up with all those stats.

As for my predictions:
Roy 19ppg, 5.0 ast, 5.0 reb, 47FG, 40 3pt, 72% FT
Blake 6ppg, 5.0 ast, 2.0 reb, 45% FG, 38% 3pt, 75% FT
Batum 4ppg, 2.0 ast, 3.0 reb, 43% FG, 35% 3pt, 72% FT
LMA 20ppg, 2.0 ast, 8.0 reb, 48% FG 75% FT
Oden 15ppg, 1.5 ast, 11 reb, 50% FG 70% FT
Rudy 12ppg, 3.0 ast. 2.0 reb, 45% FG 38% 3pt, 85% FT
Travis 10ppg, 1.0 ast, 4.0 reb, 44% FG, 37% 3pt, 70% FT
Frye 6ppg, 1.0 ast, 5.0 reb, 45% FG, 36% 3pt, 75% FT
Joel 3ppg, .5 ast, 6.0 reb, 55% FG, 65% FT
Sergio 4ppg, 6 ast, 1.5 reb, 44% FG, 34% 3pt, 68% FT
Webster 9ppg, 1.0 ast, 5.0 reb, 45% FG, 39% 3pt, 75% FT

That adds up to the Blazers avg 99ppg with Batum, then 104 ppg when Webster comes back from injury in January.

We traded him.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

I guess I should mention

I only did the first 10 players or the 10 players who will get the most minutes, Bayless will not be one of those players in my opinion. He will be lucky to get 5-8 mins a game to start, but if he improves over the season and passes sergio, then he will take his spot. I just don’t see that happening. If you want to predict Bayless’s numbers go ahead, becuase I could be wrong about him.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.

Check out the other scenarios over at Bustabucket
