Horrible travel story...

…I voted for “Alley Oop” because:

One day down at the local YMCA, I was running the lane, and a kid threw me a high lob. I jumped as high as I could…I just kept going up and up and eventually, after 3 minutes in the air, I jumped right over 7’ 2" Frédéric Weis and threw the ball down with authority. Before coming back down to earth, I chipped my teeth on the rim.
  It was just horrible.

Where are you headed?

I have a few great travelling stories.

One time, in Miami, I met a famous person. He had the BEST travelling stories. He told me he travels all the time, and despite lots of people watching, nobody seems to notice. Was he a spy? A Federal Agent? No, he was Dwayne Wade.

pretty cool

I like the old school aesthetic of the rivs, but I am too into the lightweight wonders as this point. How are you liking the riv tires? I was thinking of getting some for the winter, but it is nearly impossible to run anything but gatorskins or armadillos around here due to the goatheads

keep up the riding, must be rough to maintain year round riding being on the coast with those winds and rain.

Rain no prob in Oregon, fenders and wool

Wind over 25 mph yes. I like to ride Cape Meares and Netarts bay on mildly stormy days. The wind hits you outta the Creek valley’s on and off but Ive never been blown over.

Ruffy Tuffy’s haven’t flatted on me through two pairs but the tread wears away rather fast. Paselas have been reliable also and seem to last twice as long. I like fat tires. I am setting up with Silver brakes and Fender spanners from River City Bikes to run 35 Paselas. There is no protection Known to man against goatheads.

by BlueBooYay on Oct 22, 2008 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I run contis and

slimed tubes and do just fine and havent had to add an tire liner yet. I am switching to tubeless on my cross bike for more protection though. I am glad I dont ride in western oregon anymore it is clear and cold hear so you just need a windproof layer on top of lots of layers. I was thinking Paselas might be a nice option once cross season is over. I think they have something called tour guard that is supposed to be nice for flat protection.

Are these silver brakes a really wide side pull? I am also not familiar with the fender spanners. Are they just a way to split fenders so you dont have to run them under brake? If so I used to make my own with some pliers and rack stays and they always worked well. Luckily, you dont need fenders in NM and the rain is a nice change of pace. How novel.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Oct 22, 2008 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

You got it right

The side pulls are true long reach, light and have extra clearance. Thr idea of the spanners is to get the fender out from under the brakes and head tube.

Hmm an engine blew up as we were lifting off?

PDX to DC flight last year. We were at speed, nose just coming off the ground i was sitting at the wing heard a horrible metal on metal grinding nose followed by a giant pop. Black smoke and fire started spewing out the exhaust, plane shuddered violently and started sliding all over the runway, lots and lots of screaming followed. Plane back under pilot control taxied directly to repair hangar so they could jettison all fuel. Flew out on another flight the next morning. That one kinda sucked.

Lay-over

I went to Europe a couple of summers ago, and we were stuck in the Frankfurt airport for 9 hours. For those of you who don’t know, Frankfurt is a smoking airport. Since I was on a school trip, we weren’t allowed to leave in case we would miss our flight. So my friends and I spent nine hours in the Frankfurt Airport McDonalds. Ahh, the Americanizing of Europe

I took a Greyhound bus from Eugene, Oregon to Mobile, Alabama

It took over 3 days. Strikers in Salt Lake City, Utah wouldn’t let our bus leave. While going over the Rocky Mountains, the bus got a flat but the driver kept driving until the tire caught on fire. We had to wait hours for another bus to come get us.

Eh, howzit, brah. You get any da kine?

My worst trip ever

Spring of 1984. Drove to L.A to escape El Nino winter in the Bay Area, but they were having the same weather so I decided a few days in Puerto Vallarta would be nice. Caught a Greyhound to the Mexican border. The woman sitting next to me, and everyone else on the bus, smelled like rotting turnips. Walked across the border into Tijuana. Taxi to the aeropuerto. Arrived at the aeropuerto at 2 p.m. for a 4:45 flight that actually did show up at 4:45… the next morning. Mexicana flight to Puerto Vallarta. Return flight a few days later included four stops to get to LAX and ended with a four-bounce landing that had some passengers crying-out in terror. Puerto Vallarta was nice.

This seems really OT

Honestly, I’m here to read about basketball, specifically about Blazers basketball. I wasn’t going to say anything yesterday after the trip to the Oregonian, that could possibly be basketball related, with the Mike Quick bit, though that was only a small fraction of the article. But there’s not even the slightest hint about basketball here. If this was in the side bar by a regular member, there would be nothing except for comments like this. The blog administrators should be held to higher standards, not lower ones.

Really?

Didn’t you see Dave’s giant post about Greg Oden? How much more can Dave and Ben possibly post about the Blazers during the preseason than they already are? What’s the harm in a few OT posts? A lot of people around here enjoy that aspect of BE. It’s like a cherry on top of a delicious Blazer sundae.

I seriously doubt this is replacing Blazer news.

Not replacing Blazers news

If there isn’t anything Blazers related, no need to post OT stuff, especilally in the main part.

Because it's two days in a row

There’s no harm, but it is pushing down the Blazers articles. I’m not trying to be a tightwad. I do come here for Blazers info though, and if I want something different I’ll go into the junk drawer. I can understand the appeal, but if this starts to be a regular thing, people will get the idea that OT posting is the new norm.

However, to show that I’m not opposed to the occasional OT canversation, I’ll indulge.

In college, I decided to take a summer time job as a river guide. The thing is, I didn’t have a car and the river was 2 and 1/2 hours away on the interstate. I had to be there one specific weekend for an orientation. I couldn’t talk anyone into doing it with me, so the only natural conclusion left was to hitchhike. This might be a good time to mention that I went to West VIrginia University.

I got drunk at my friend’s barbeque before I left and actually got my first ride to the highway from the police. I was of age, but I couldn’t believe they were cool with plopping me out in the middle of the highway. Then the fun began…

The first guy to pick me up seemed nice enough. He took me down the road for a half hour and was a little off, but I didn’t mind. We got on the topic of sports, and I thought this was starting to turn up. Then he brought the conversation into the locker room. He started talking about comparisons and circle j-
“Let me out.”
“But we’re not close t-”
“Let me out now.”

By this point we had taken the wrong exit and I was in the middle of nowhere West Virginia. I waited on a little road with no houses or anything for about an hour. Finally a pick up truck came by and picked me up. When they stopped, I smelled something a little funny. I got in anyway, and it was a cab only pick-up. I soon realized I was sitting next to two people who obviously didn’t have running water because they smelled worse than anyone I had ever met before. They kept saying how they were going to take me all the way to the river, but the truck couldn’t go over 40 without it shaking like it was going to fall apart. I bought them some gas and a couple of beers (did I mention it was West Virginia) and then they realized that it would be a long time investment to take me all the way like they had promised. They tried to drop me off again in the middle of nowhere and told me that the river was right up the road, about a 5 minute walk. I called their bluff and asked them to take me back to the highway at least. They did that. I was relieved to be out of that truck though. For a little while at least.

I spent the next 6 hours on the side of the highway with a brief break for dinner. No one was stopping for me, and it finally started raining. I was completely bummed now. 80 miles from where I started, 120 from where I was going, and I had an 8 am deadline that I was sure I was going to miss. I had no idea what to do, when finally a Venzuellan guy picked me up. He had a blanket covering the front seat, and he was completely cool. I fell asleep in the car, and when he woke me up I was 20 miles from the river. I swore I would never forget his name, but I don’t even think I knew it in the first place. Regardless, I love that man.

At this point I had all the momentum in the world. I felt like I could have walked the last 20 miles in the 3 hours I had. Glad I didn’t have to. The last ride I got was from a trucker who was just waking up on the side of the road. I caught him while he was tightening his straps on his truck. He made me promise not to kill him, and we were on our way. Truckers, by the way, will almost never pick up hitchhikers, no matter what you see in the movies.

All in all it took me 13 hours to get there, but once my river manager heard what I went through to get there he virtually gave me the job (though he didn’t let me know that until after I checked out in the training).

I’ve also been back and forth across the US 4 times by car, a trip to Europe and am now living in Japan and travelling regularly in Asia. I’m still not sure why I am posting about it on BE. Hopefully though one day soon I’ll go back to Europe and grab a beer with Almart1. That would be news worthy.

Blogging

A blog is a separate beast than a forum or discussion, even if they are housed on the same page. Part of the appeal of a blog is that personal touches of the writer sneak in to the narrative, giving it a personality all its own.

Sports Car all the way!

I would prefer to do laps from Point A to Point A to Point A….around a circuit like Laguna Seca in an automobile that is set up to handle corners and accelerate quickly.

If I have to travel more than 200 miles I would definitely prefer to fly.

So I voted “alley oop.” Then again, if I could convert alley-oops, I’m sure I’d prefer them to any form of travel, regardless of distance.
