No JD this morning? Busters.

Oden is everywhere right now. I'm thrilled to have him and expect him to have a great year. It's interesting to ponder how this team would fare if we were never to get him. Last year we "overachieved" and went 41-41. Now Roy and Aldridge have another year under their belts, and each should really come into their own games this year. Would we make the playoffs without Greg Oden? Am I the only one that thinks we would've made it anyway, that he just makes it a lock?

I had a dream last night. Or maybe it was a nightmare. Nate McMillan resigned. He quit citing that he had worked so hard on JJack that he just couldn't muster doing it anymore. Definitely a nightmare.

That reminded me that he didn't sign the extension he was offered... is that a frightening prospect to anyone still?

Thanks, I was about to post one!

And no, I’m not worried about Nate’s extension. I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

Man I love him.

I've never liked that the word "resigned" can me "re-signed" and "I quit."

The lexicon has my noggin wonder’n.

When we win the trophy this year, there’s gonna be an Oden statue in front of the Rose Garden. They’ll have to melt down a quarter million dollars worth of pennies to do it, but it will be there.
Book it.

Trail Mix 10/22/08 — Wednesday is garbage day edition…
by timbo on Oct 22, 2008 8:49 AM PDT
Well, Wednesday is garbage day in my neighborhood, anyway… And since it’s 8:30 and nobody has cracked open a new junk drawer into which we may dump our digital goop, I’ll do honors again.

First up, politics. Tommy Bahamas and Twiggsy will scream, but how can a person not appreciate the delicious irony of the scandal of the day, which I am hereby naming BARBIEGATE.™® The liberal media elites can pay me royalties on this one… Yep, believe it or not, there was a story behind the designer dress and 4" snakeskin patent leather pumps that Sarah “You Betcha” Palin wore to the Veep debate. The RNC has spent (through September) $150K on dressing up their fashion plate running mate, including $4700+ on makeup and hairdressing. That’s nearly A DOZEN John Edwards $400 haircuts for those of you keeping score at home… Dja think Tina Fey is going to get a little mileage out of this one come Saturday?

Speaking of things people in Corvallis are waiting for with baited breath, OSU AD Bob DeCarolis is on the short list of Indiana University to take over there. He’s been a first rate AD and it will be sad to see him go — but we’ve all seen this song and dance before and as soon as you see a guy’s mug in the Orgygonian with “reports” about such things, you can just as well start planning the goodbye party… OSU used to have a HORRIFIC deficit in their Athletic Department, which was the single most loathesome bureaucracy in the city of Corvallis, some say, and that’s essentially liquidated now thanks in large measure to DeCarolis…

The world series is starting. Phillies and Exorcised Rays. Rays get 4 games at home. Call the result now.

Big Orygonyun story today by Joe Freeman entitled “More Frustration for Ike Diogu.” Here’s the LINK. I’m a fan low post play and am happy to see Ike in the Blazers’ toolbox, but it’s hard to envision how he sniffs the floor during games this season unless there is a big injury to LMA or Frye — and even in that case, my hunch is that Nate will play Travis out of position before he uses a real Power Forward to play Power Forward. Article notes that Ike is averaging 5.5 pts. / 2 boards / 1.5 blocks in 14 minutes per game this preseason, which is fully adequate at a minimum… Nice to have a guy like that on the bench. Did anyone out there see him in college or in his previous pro career? Any insights to add?

Mike “Pitbull” Vick is said to be planning to plead guilty to state dogfighting charges, which would pave the way for early release from federal pen into a halfway house. My question: do they really have halfway houses for millionaire pro atheletes? Do these have the same amenities as you typical halfway house? Do they have a house golden retriever or something to help ease Icky Vicky back into the real world?

What else we got? $1000 Superbowl tickets??? Usually the worst game of the year, certainly the worst telecast of the year, overpriced by a factor of 10… Still, if the scalpers are getting $1000+ a seat, which they have previously been, it means that you are underpricing your product. Say what you want about the NFL, they do really understand economics…

Okay, back to our usual discussions of strip clubs, bars, and SN users with avatars featuring topless chicks…

Ciao now.

Haven't had enough, eh? Here's the original Barbiegate (tm)(r) story, from politico.com...

RNC shells out $150K for Palin fashion

By JEANNE CUMMINGS

10/22/08 12:35 AM EDT

The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission’s long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use.

Politico asked the McCain campaign for comment, explicitly noting the $150,000 in expenses for department store shopping and makeup consultation that were incurred immediately after Palin’s announcement. Pre-September reports do not include similar costs.

Spokeswoman Maria Comella declined to answer specific questions about the expenditures, including whether it was necessary to spend that much and whether it amounted to one early investment in Palin or if shopping for the vice presidential nominee was ongoing.

"The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent," she said.

As much as I find that disturbing, is there any info on how much the Obama camp spends on clothing, etc.?

I suppose he doesn’t enter the stage in suits he bought from Wal Mart wearing a second hand watch. And he hired a personal aide who is a former Duke basketball player mainly to work out with him.

Then future NBA champs and state guests can throw a few hoops. I would love to see photos of Obama blocking Sarkozy and Merkel hoisting two-handed free throws. Too bad Putin has changed office, he was pretty buff for a politician.

Tim, you have already shown at least one qualification for working in the media,

… a lack of imagination. Every scandal, seudo-scandal, or non-story we desperately want to make into a scandal, gets labeled “something” gate. After 30 years you think someone would show a little originality.

BTW – how much do McCain, Biden and Obama spend on suits, ties, shoes, etc? Don’t know, do you.

Help me out, people, TimG has a point…

Per Obama: See my comment above.

If Barry broke the law in the same way the Republicans seem to have done by appropriating campaign funds for personal use, I’m sure we’ll be hearing about it in the next three days… Then again, maybe dishing 6 figures out of RNC funds for VP candidates is par for the course, I honestly don’t know. Dress for Success and all that…

Certainly a nice beni for a Governor with a salary of $125K + $23K in oil extraction money…

What's his point?

Why should Obama, Biden or McCain himself for that matter be required to defend themselves from something they haven’t done? How does the absence of wrongdoing by others excuse what Palin did do?

And if you’re concerned that there may be similar dirt on Obama/Biden, consider that Biden’s total net worth is around $150,000, and Obama had his shoes resoled instead of buying a new pair.

Me, I’m not going to hold it against her. In fact, I fully support her going on more shopping trips using campaign funds. Means less money to go towards underhanded mudslinging ads.

by grimc on Oct 22, 2008 4:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

So now you guys are expert in campaign financing law?

This is made up news. I know you guys are experienced enough and intelligent enough to know that in this day and age political campaigning is as much about appearance and looking good on TV as it is getting out and glad handing people and kissing babies. Purchasing new clothes for Palin is nothing more than assuring she has the necessary props for appearing on stage.

If you want to believe the resoled shoe bit about Obama, go ahead. I’m not going to doubt the man. Hell, I know what it is like to find a pair of shoes you like so much that you’d rather repair them than buy a new pair. Even when the wife is ragging you about throwing them away. But I also know a good campaign story when I hear one and I have full confidence in Barack knowing one as well. The point here is that nobody ever bothered to ask or look into how much male candidates for office spent on clothes or whether they spent their own money. But a woman spending $150,000 on clothes, well, isn’t that just typical.

As for personal use – well, just how do you define personal use? The fact the candidates lease their own aircraft rather than fly commercial can easily be defined as spending campaign money for personal use. Afterall, the reason for having their own plane is the convienence it provides. It certainly is a lot more expensive.

Grimc’s has a better observation. Rather than make noise about a non-issue like Palin’s wardrobe, think of it as money spent on something irrelavent.

PS – Grimc, underhanded mudslinging ads? How old are you? Underhanded mudslinging ads (cartoons, pamphlets, etc) are as old as the political history of the US. Older in fact. Take the time to look into early American political campaigns. They were far more down and dirty than what you see now. And neither side can claim any sort of moral high ground. Both are doing it.

It’s a silly little distraction, but presidential campaigns are full of silly little distractions, aren’t they? And as silly little distractions go, I’m enjoying this one. It’s sparked all sorts of deep investigative journalism. Since people seem to be interested:

This isn’t the first time eyebrows have been raised over the price of McCain-Palin fashion. In July, the Huffington Post had a field day with reports that John McCain wore $520 Ferragamo loafers. And in September, Vanity Fair said that Cindy McCain had worn about $300,000 to the Republican convention — $3,000 for an Oscar de la Renta dress and hundreds of thousands more for the diamonds and pearls that went with it.

Rothman estimated that Michelle Obama’s usual campaign outfits are worth about $2,000 each. Barack Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination in a custom-made Hartmarx suit, and the Chicago Sun-Times says he’s bought five more of them since. Retail price: about $1,500 each.

The Obama campaign says that "neither the Obama campaign nor the DNC have ever bought clothes for any of the Obamas or the Bidens."

The RNC, meanwhile, says essentially the same thing. An RNC official told Politico Wednesday that the Palins will have to return all of the items that were purchased for them — and that the RNC will then turn them over to charity — no matter who wins the presidential election.

If it was campaign money that’s one thing, but if it was his own money, more power to him.

ACB REPORT.

Ricky Rubio birthday anniversary was yesterday, he is 18 years old. He is injured so we can not yet see how he is doing without Rudy in his team.
There are very few things to say about scouting in the ACB. Felipe Reyes is the player with best efficiency rating right now, you probably saw him playing for Spain during the Olympics.
The other interesting player to follow is Víctor Claver, who has shooted three at 91% (10/11) in the first 4 games, the same rate he has for his FT (91, 10/11). 2pointers have been 67 (8/12). He made a work-out for Portland this summer and he retired of the draft. I think he was abused on defense, but maybe Mr Pritchard might correct that statement.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

Claver needs a new nickname. We already have a Batman.

I've heard he's a Claver fellow.

I wish Pet Ko (remember him?) was traded to an ACB team

Because I don’t want people to forget Alfredo’s wonderful contributions to this site last year just because Rudy is state side.
