Blazers vs Kings Minutes By Position/Player

Tonight (Blazers vs Kings 10/20/08) was just a preseason game, but Nate played to win in a competitive game. It's a first look at one possible distribution of minutes for the early regular season. Either Rudy or Roy or both were always on the floor (no surprise there) and the 2nd unit played "intact" for less than 12 minutes (I expect that to decrease even more as the year goes on, i.e. the rotation will tighten).

C - Oden 30, Pryz 18

PF - LMA 36, Frye 12

Nate used a 3-guard offense for 14 minutes (always with Rudy and Roy together):

3G - Roy 14, Rudy 14, Blake 12, Bayless 2

and a conventional SF/SG/PG offense for 34 minutes:

SF - Batum 17, Outlaw 17

SG - Roy 15, Rudy 19

PG - Blake 15, Sergio 13, Roy 6

Total Minutes/player

LMA 36

Roy 35

Rudy 33

Oden 30

Blake 27

Pryz  18

Batum 17

Outlaw 17

Sergio 13

Frye 12

Bayless 2

Total 240

Or maybe it's just a policy of making the youngster wait.

He may be one of three rookies, but the other two include a guy who traveled with the team all of last season
and a guy in his low twenties who’s played several years of pro ball in Europe and a pivotal role on the silver medal olympic team.

In other words, Bayless is the only TRUE “rookie” on the team, and will be eased in accordingly.
He’ll get more PT this year than Trout could dream of in his rookie year, for example.

tell me, how do you forget about the batman?

Bayless needs to earn it. part of earning means that he needs to learn to follow, to learn, and to relax a little.

We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

Yup.

Plus I think a major part of it is, there just really isn’t room for him right now. Blake is playing extremely efficiently, Sergio is revitalized by the arrival of Rudy, Roy is gonna get his minutes, Rudy is going to get his minutes. Frankly, there just isn’t a good spot for Bayless at this moment.

Rec

This is good stuff. This is the first preseason game that really gave any indication, I think.

It will be interesting to see, as Channing gets back into condition, if his minutes bump up a little and Aldridge gets a little more rest. I hope so, I’d like to see LMA keep really fresh through the regular season, and not play more than 32-33.

It will also be interesting to see what happens when Martell comes back. I expect him to take a couple minutes each from Rudy and Roy (less three-guard lineup) and the rest from Batum.

We may actually see more intact second unit PT once Martell is back, rather than less. Not in the playoffs, but in the regular season.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Specially at back to back games.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

Martell

Martell might be the odd man out by the time he is healed. The two units will be so used to playing together with Rudy extending minutes over into the black unit and fourth quarter that Martell might have a lot fewer opportunities to shine. I don’t see anybody taking minutes from Rudy. It will be the other way around. Go Blazers!

I don't think so

Martel looked awsome in his to games this season before injury, (fanfest and preseason game #1). And by awsome I mean his new found willingness to consistantly cut to the basket. We already know he can hit the 3, and we know he is our best defender at the 3 for this season anyway, add all that up and he will be starting again once he is healed. My guess is Nic will be benched unless he plays out of his mind. (hint: He didn’t last night, he played well but not great) If Nic does play lights out, and Travis continues to be passive or just not fit or feel comfortable, he might just be traded by the deadline.

Some of the reason Martell was effective slashing in preseason

was Rudy getting him the ball exactly when and where he needed it.

I agree

Batum will improve and with more experience under actual game conditions
Batum will show a complete set of skills needed at SF.

When Martell gets back, he will have to get back into condition.
The playing time will be shared and Martell’s weaknesses at SF
will be contrasted with Batum’s BBIQ and skills at SF.
Watch closely, because Nate and KP will be, and Martell’s future will be set.

Passing

The SF should be making the Scorers on our team better.
He should be finding and setting-up Oden, Aldridge, and ROY. Not the other way around.

Martell NEEDS to be set up. He should be moving better without the ball to become an outlet if one of the Scorers need it. This requires BBIQ which Martell and Outlaw (with several years of game time experience) doesn’t appear to have acquired yet.

by spencerbutte on Oct 23, 2008 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Love Martell but still see him as potential trade bait

Martell’s injury is unfortunate because it looked like he might have a break out season. He needs a great showing (once back) to get into major minutes. If his D is tons better than Nate will give him time. I like his new positive approach and maturity. Go Blazers!

I hope Nate uses a big lineup

Dave made a comment that Lma was our best wing defender in the game last night. If that’s true, then I would likeo tsee Lma slip over to the three with Frye at the 4 and oden at the 5. It wouldn’t matter which guards you pair with those three. This could cause all sorts of havoc for 6-10 minutes a night, especially if you sub Frye or Lma out to go with the three guard lineup.

by NWfan on Oct 21, 2008 10:28 AM PDT reply actions

Neither LaMarcus Aldridge nor Channing Frye ...

play as weakside cornermen offensively, as they both like to roam the high-post like true power forwards. With Greg Oden, Aldridge, and Frye on the court together, opposing teams would just pack it in with a 2-3 zone defense and shut down the Blazers by forcing Brandon Roy and Steve Blake to bomb three-pointers.

by AK1984 on Oct 21, 2008 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

with Rudy at the 1 and Roy at the 2.

Awesome. Now that is a basketball line-up. Tall playmaking guards feeding interior passes to tall front court. Like you say, be cool to mix it up like that for half a 1/4 or so.

Tradeoffs

Do you lose more on the defensive end than you gain on the offensive end?

If we ran that lineup, would Rudy or Brandon be posting up the opposing PG? Probably not. The other team would be packing in a zone (and watching Rudy for the 3). So the fact that their PG would be shorter than Rudy or Roy would not be a great plus for us.

On the other hand, with that kind of lineup, we also could use a zone, so we wouldn’t be hurt badly by the opposing PG.

Also, there are plenty of PGs that Rudy can defend. You wouldn’t run this lineup against every team, but Rudy can certainly defend the point against some of them.

For me, the biggest lineup stat is this:

Minutes with a true 5 playing Center: 48:00

That’s gonna be a key to the Blazers winning this year…

I disagree

Minutes with a true 5 playing center? 42:00.

When we’re up by 20 with 6 minutes to go, I don’t care if it is Diogu playing center, but I don’t much want Joel in there getting injured.

Excellent information.

I would like to know if Rudy finished the match on court and how many minutes Sergio was on court at the same time than Oden?.

Anyway if Sergio is being so agressive and doing more or ess the stuff Nateasked him, it seems to me 13 minutes is little time. Might his PT increase if he can play consistently as he is doing right now?

Dream final line up

When Martell returns the possibility to have either Outlaw or Webster at the 3 in that final lineup is amazing. Based on the opposing team matchup and which one has the hotter hand on the night close games may become pull away victories more often than not.

Hard to imagine either as “expendable” when considering needs for the final 5 – 10 minutes of a game.

I think that lineup tells who Nate trusts to close the game.

All of them have a great variety of offense weapons and, above all, complementary weapons.

Maybe the lineup may change adding Webster or Blake depending on the game.

by cbp on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I doubt Blake is in

at the end of a close game unless we need a 3 on the last play. Then, we might see Blake, Rudy, Roy, Travis (at PF) and LMA or even Frye.
