Gameday Open Thread -- Kings (preseason)

Apparently there's a preseason game in Sacramento tonight. I can't find any information about it being televised here in Portland. Apparently CSN California is going to have it though and so will DirecTV it sounds like. Comcast subscribers in the Portland area are still out of luck.

Sweet.  I feel bad for Nic Batum.  We are, perhaps, in the midst of his breakout.  And we're missing it.

Will tonight be the Revenge of Spencer Hawes? I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

Discuss exactly how excited you are not to be able to watch this game in the comments.

Then there’s a stream online. stoogetv.com channelsurfing.net or justin.tv might pick it up as we draw closer to tipoff.

tonights game on TV

I was able to watch our first game against the kings on Comcast Cali. so unless they decide to block it out and if you have DIrectv and the sports package, you should be able to watch it. That still doesn’t make up for an entire regluar season of not being able to watch the games!!

I HATE COMCAST ALMOST AS MUCH AS I HATE DIRECTV!!

I think you lived near or in there, right?

I’ve been there a few times and it doesn’t remind me at all of Portland… maybe the outside of Sacramento is the same as the outside of Portland, like the suburby type areas, but otherwise Portland has a lot more uniqueness and culture.

An actual downtown where people go and play, music scene, fun people, etc, is in Portland.

Sacramento is not a bad place at all but I think it has more to do with Beaverton than Portland.

PORTLAND OREGON IS A SAINT AND YOU TAKE IT BACK.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Oct 20, 2008 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Let me count the ways the two towns are alike...

Situated close to mountains and great skiing — though Oregon snow is wet and icky, plus there are only a handful of ski areas on Mt.Hood and 20 bazillion in the Tahoe area.

Ninety-minute drive to great beaches. Oregon’s are cleaner and less crowded, but you can actually not freeze to death in a bathing suit on a Bay Area beach.

Population about the same.

River city.

One major-league team, both NBA. Neither gets respect from East Coast sports fans and media.

Portland is way prettier, but you can commute on a bicycle year-round in Sacto, and bicyclists aren’t loathed there. Plus Sacto is the state capitol and has some awesome architecture.

I could come up with more if I spent more time there, but you get the picture. Now stop hatin’ or I’ll compare Portland to San Francisco and you will not like that.

FYI, I live in the Bay Area, but on the eastern fringe, so I’m in both the SF and Sacto broadcast region. Doesn’t mean I can get the game tonight, of course…

I spent my first 34 years in SF, then moved to Portland in '86

I also have spent a little time in Sac. So I think I’m qualified to say that there’s NO comparison between Sac and Portland. If there were, why would I have moved 10 hours to the north instead of just an hour or two to the east?

Here’s a closely-kept secret: Portland is one of the best places to live in the world. That’s not just my opinion: I’ve heard it from a number of people who’ve lived all over the globe. But SHHH—don’t tell anyone.

My Dad has lived in the bay area since i was three, and i split most of my life between boston and seattle. The four years i lived in portland (lewis and clark) were awesome. It is hands down the choicest place to live of anywhere i’ve been. And i consider myself pretty well traveled. You Portlanders better enjoy it.

Lived in Portland, Seattle, and Bay Area

Also visited lots of others.

No bagging on Seattle! It’s a pretty place, and the people there are really good folks for the most part. It’s a very different vibe from Portland, but still a good place.

(My wife grew up in the South, loves Portland, and dislikes Seattle, so you’re not alone though)

I agree with all others that Sacramento isn’t similar to Portland at all. Very different kind of place.

by Timmay! on Oct 20, 2008 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Geographically and size wise

It sounds the same, but people wise and culturally Sacramento is very bland.

It’s an ok place, but it isn’t really unique like Portland.

I think Portland is kinda San Francisco-ie, a much more mild version, but if one doesn’t like that idea I wouldn’t worry about it… Portland is Portland.

I didn’t realize how nice and unique Portland was/is until I travelled all over the USA and lotsa other countries. Portland is a very, very, very nice place to live for cool people and non-cool Mortimer’s alike.

Sacramento is a nice place, but just… there. It has a superficial resemblance to Portland I guess, with population and one horse town type stereotypes, but it’s just a bland biggish city to me.

I´m curious about:

1.- Will Nate play two units with two different styles (I think so the first and second quarter) or a rotation (perhaps in the third and fourth quarter?).
2.- Oden, Batum and Blake playing in the first unit.
3.- Assits+stealths-TO ratio for the second unit.
4.- Frye and Outlaw in the second unit.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

There are SO many potent combinations

This team could have 4 or 5 different looks — all in the same game — I don’t think a clear substitution pattern will emerge — I think there will be multiple options that are based on the opposition and the early “hot hand” — the challenge is going to be to keep the “TEAM” concept prevalent and a zero tolerance whining rule —

There’s alot of “ifs” — but I think this team can compete with anyone in the league - the depth and youth combination is powerful - I won’t be shocked with 50 wins

You should be able to

There should be NO blackout, since it is a road game, and if any bar has DirecTV (or simply has access to NBA League Pass), they will have the game.

If the person controlling the TV is confused or doesn’t know what to do, just tell them to turn to channel 752 and to shut their face and GO BLAZERS.

When I would watch games at a bar in 06-07, I would often have to instruct them how to turn to the right channel since it is extremely complicated to scroll down the channel listings, so be prepared for that. Gametime is 7pm West coast time, and also be aware that sometimes the game feed takes a second or two to kick in.

Good luck my friend!

They are IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of when you have questions.

All the purchasing of programs and service is done through automated machines (like, where you tell the machine your phone number and tell it what service you want to purchase). This can be extremely frustrating when you just want to speak with a person.

Also, DirecTV has a weird delay on all the menu and channel surfing displays. Scrolling through channels takes a long time. I assume this is because the satellite has delays on it.

by lanepete on Oct 20, 2008 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd have to see

If any team that would benefit from getting Miles and has the players who wouldn’t be too hurt by having a guy who doesn’t really deserve minutes or playing time being signed to a team just to mess up another team (the Celtics could maybe do it because KG can keep everyone in line), and actually has a roster spot open.

I mean, it ain’t as simple as just having him play ten games. He has to be on the active roster for 10 games first because of his suspension, he has to beat out someone with a guaranteed deal on most teams, and the team has to have a real reason to think they can gain from it.

Assuming that Darius isn’t good enough to make a team on his own merits, I mean.

He can still run, but he ain’t anywhere close to as good as he was when he went down. He ain’t the same Darius, not even close. I don’t think he is good enough to make a team on his own merits, not with how his game looked.

Because it’s a vet’s minimum deal, it’s pretty much free for another team, so if he can play someone could pick him up. I don’t know if he can still play.

I get the feeling that maybe his knee wasn't holding up that well.

It seems like this could just be a way for Darius and the Celtics to both save face. Darius got to end his career on a positive note and the Celtics look like good guys for giving him a chance. It would make both of them look very foolish if they had to admit that his knee wasn’t doing so hot. The Celtics would have to admit that the Doctors were right and they were wrong, and Darius would have to admit that the Blazers were right.

I just get the feeling he won’t be back.

Thanks, Comcast!

I’m so relieved I don’t have the burden of watching a Blazer preseason game here in Astoria. Now I can concentrate on more important things, like figuring out how to live without television, the most intrusive, least educational, most propagandizing, least informative medium ever to fill a room with mindless chatter and pointless visual imagery.

Comcast, with you in the driver’s seat, we’ll finally be able to wean Oregonians off of needing to watch sports at all, especially Blazer games. Then we can get on with our lives, our money in our pockets (and not in yours). Whatever dynamite marketing plan you had, it’s sure exceptional. Keep up the good work.

If you say "basically" at the beginning of a sentence, you probably also put ketchup on everything you eat.

sorry for adding another TV question but....

I have comcast and NBA League pass and when i check the guide I don’t see anything about a game on any of the channels that I thought were dedicated to league pass. Can anyone with Comcast League Pass help me out and let me know where to find the game or if it’s even being shown on the Comcast League Pass? Thanks and any help is appreciated.

by HeffBlazer on Oct 20, 2008 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

If you have NBA League Pass

Either because you have a subscription to it or because of the Free Preview, you SHOULD have access to the game.

There is only one NBA League Pass, and not a unique one to each provider… so whether you get NBA League Pass from DirecTV, Dish, or Comcast, the game should be right there on the League Pass channels.

I dunno what the channel # would be for Comcast subscribers, but just try those channels around game time. On DirecTV, the game is on the 2nd League Pass channel. I bet it’d be the same for other providers. Looking at Comcast.com with a Portland zip code to see the channel listings, it should be around channel 439-449… but you probably know that.

So yeah… just try those, you SHOULD have it. GOOD LUCK!

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Oct 20, 2008 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

thanks Mortimer

Yes I found the channels on the guide and none of them indicate that they will be airing the game tonight. This is what caused my panic but I will hold out hope that you are right and one of them will change around tip off.

by HeffBlazer on Oct 20, 2008 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I got an idea'r

You should be able to see the Knicks play the Nets on the 1st League Pass channel.

Do you? If so, don’t worry. If ya don’t see it, call your provider.

Mort—

by Mortimer on Oct 20, 2008 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya I checked an no luck on the Knicks/Nets

But I called my provider earlier today because of another problem and they fixed that and I know my League Pass has been activated because now I can see NBA TV and on 446-449 there is the stock screen advertising some sports package where before it was a blank screen telling me to call my cable provider. frustrating.

by HeffBlazer on Oct 20, 2008 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm really sorry

That makes no damn sense, especially if you are PAYING for the channels.

Can ya watch NBA TV? Maybe your provider just hasn’t flipped some switch because they are silly. I dunno if it is that important to ya or whatever, but I would call them again and be upset and get them to tell you what’s up.

I mean, you’re paying TOP DOLLAR for this access, and the game is definitely on League Pass, and if they don’t show it to you then they are evil pedophiles.

Good luck again… it’s annoying when it’s such a pain in the butt just to watch our team!

by Mortimer on Oct 20, 2008 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I took your advice and called them to Raise a little Hell

It turns out Comcast isn’t going to show any preseason games on their league pass package so I am out of luck for this game but I will get to watch when the games start to matter so I can’t complain too much.

It took Olajuwon five years to learn that pass. It probably didn’t help that Greg turned the ball over on the first play of the game trying to pass.

Blazers defense

Aldridge takes a guy on the perimeter, goes for the steal, but misses. The guy drives so Blake comes over to slow him down. Then when he gets by Blake there’s Oden. Even though the execution was so-so in this case that kind of attitude/drive is eventually going to turn into an effective defense.

Batum’s problem on offense, if anything, will be not being confident enough to take the shots he does get. He won’t break the offense. Ignore the misses…so far he’s made decisions correctly from what I’ve seen.

LMA is smooth....he will be a force

Defense — Rudy needs to improve….some missed assignments with the large scale line up shifts….good energy, great skills…this is an awesome team…sergio looked good…very direct in his movements and actions….Blake is sharp..Oden looks good — not as hesitant as I’ve seen..Unstoppable down low …great chemistry throughout….Outlaw seemed unsure of his role…Bayless looked like he belonged there when he came on — he was playing with Rudy — seemed like there was confusion as to what roles Rex Rudy and Roy were to play when they were there together

Salmons is underrated... sometimes

He can be pretty good and then disappear.

He’s big and quick and while kinda a black hole he can definitely score.

Just remember that last season,

we started off terrible on the road, and finished up barely OK on the reoad. Additionally, we were pretty weak in the 1st half and won many games through end-of-game heroics. With that in mind, ending the Q up 7, even with defensive problems, I take that as a good sign.

Sacramento has 55% overall shooting at 60% from 3s but they still trail with the blazers at 51% overall and 50% from 3s. Blazers are obviously getting opportunities with steals from RUDY.

Greg Oden is a basketball player that happens to be 7 feet. Even if he wasn’t 7 feet you know he would be at a basketball court shooting around. Can’t say that much for other 7 footers who can’t make a FT to save their life.

Many of them would attack France, Massachusetts, or the moon if the president said it was necessary "for freedom."

Highly compliant with social conventions, pro-conformity. Feel safer in the presence of powerful authorities. Often highly religious, zealous, dogmatic, moralistic, moderate to little education, narrow-minded, intolerant, highly prejudiced, hostile and bigoted towards minorities, bullying, mean-spirited, severely punitive, panic easily.

hmmm

I guess when a player misses the first of 2 or 3 free throws the ESPN gamecast computer calls it an offensive rebound. Weird.

Their 'thinking' is based not on critical judgment, but on what authority figures have said to them.

As distasteful as these qualities appear, for authoritarians they can be (secretly or even openly) very attractive.

Is Travis having another crappy game

or is that just what it looks like in the ESPN boxscore?
