Another Minor Training Camp Injury

Ben is reporting that Steve Blake pulled a hamstring and will be out for at least two days.

At least you know the guys are going hard.

so the question is...

Are we experiencing an unusually high amount of minor injuries / bumps / bruises this year, or is this par for the course for the average teams training camp? Are we portlanders just sensitive to the potential for injury after oden last year? Are we just too nervous, or is this abnormal?

by oden is GOD OF WAR on Oct 2, 2008 3:06 PM PDT   0 recs

I am extremely sensitive

In fact, I experience the symptoms of pain that each Blazer player endures.

Currently, my ankle is tweaked, my hamstring feels tight, but both my knees feels great!

Oh, and one of my legs is longer than the other one.

Word.

from Freeman's article on Oreglive

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/10/afternoon_injury_update_oden_i.html

“While Blake is out, McMillan said Sergio Rodriguez would initially assume Blake’s starting position, ahead of rookie Jerryd Bayless. But, McMillan added, he would continue to evaluate the position and explore his options.”

The backup PG battle just cranked up a notch. I like that Nate is giving Sergio the benefit of the doubt (which I’m sure has as much to do with Bayless being so green, as anything). Sergio wanted a chance to prove himself and earn his spot—well, buddy, you got it.

Wow!

I’m pretty surprised, but I think it’s good news for a few reasons. First of all, of course, Sergio needs another chance to prove himself on this team. I hope he performs well, because his court vision is something else. Until now his game has been disappointing, but his court vision is still out of sight. It sounds like his shooting has improved, which is great… but, if his defense is still lackadaisical, he’ll be in trouble with Nate.

Also: if you’re a Bayless fan, this is more motivation for him to work on his game and try to outplay Serg. He seems to be a “bulletin board” kind of guy, and I think this one will go onto the training camp bulletin board for him.

Jerryd Bayless has two emotions: Kill and Win.

Tom predicted that Sergio will be the #2 guard when the season starts.

So did I .... or at least of that possibility because of Bayless' greenness.

But of course, we have a long way to go before the season opener and things can change. Still, I expect that Sergio could be the number one option at PG off the bench because he and Blake are the only true point guards on the team.

by TwoDeep on Oct 2, 2008 5:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Now, let's think about this

We now know KP posts on BE. TiH makes a prediction about Sergio that comes true. Everyone knows KP is high on Sergio, and he has the inside knowledge to know who really is #2 on the depth chart.

Hmmmmm……

That's a little surprising

I wonder if it’s one of these:

- Confidence booster for Sergio
- A way to push on Bayless.
- He’s really playing better
- He’s the only one there with true PG skill other than Blake

Either way, there’ve been comments from the practices (other than this site) that Sergio had shown improvement. I figured they were just hyping, and that he was probably about the same as last year.

Maybe it wasn’t just hype..

I truly think it is a combo of all four of those factors.

A few years experience playin' PG with the PTB

I think should be added to this list;

- Confidence booster for Sergio
- A way to push on Bayless.
- He’s really playing better
- He’s the only one there with true PG skill other than Blake

Bayless needs to be pushed?

I don’t think so…

We really don't know these guys that well at all

For all we know, he loves it when he’s pushed to work harder, and it’s advantageous to do this.

We are just startin' to know them a little bit better

Sergio is a point guard

I don’t think Bayless is yet. From a distance, I believe that’s exactly the call I would make too. Now…GO SERGIO GO! Seize opportunity! Earn playing time!

I wish

Everyone would just stop playing basketball and simply rest until the season starts! Is everyone an idiot? BASKETBALL PLAYING is what is hurting everyone, and yet they keep going out to do it.

Insanity!

Ridiculosity!

Ya go to a doctor, and say ‘hey doc, it hurts when I play basketball’, invariably that doctor will respond ‘then stop playing basketball ya dumb poop!’. It’s science, folks, and when we dabble in the matters of God, we position ourselves to get served.

We need to just quit while we are ahead and rest everyone for the playoffs.

But some folks just got to do it

by southern oregon on Oct 2, 2008 6:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I've had a doctor call me dumb

but I’ve never had one call me “poop”.

So I think Mort is lying in this post.

My faith is destroyed.

Besides, we all know how Greg got hurt and it wasn’t basketball playing, was it? And I hurt my back doing non-basketball playing stuff that I’m not going to talk about (just following Monta’s example here, folks, that’s all).

Maybe Mortimer isn’t KP after all.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Just in case you think we are abby normal....

Clippers rookie guard Eric Gordon’s ankle injury, suffered on the first day of training camp on Tuesday, could keep him out of practice anywhere from five days to a week. Which leads to the question: Is Gordon injury-prone? He also suffered a hamstring injury limiting his summer-league action to two games. Or is he simply the victim of a couple of flukes?

Blake’s best buddy Oden goes down and then Blake goes down. I think Blake doesn’t like playing when Oden is out.

Just kidding, but this is really Sergio’s chance to shine and prove he is ahead of the Bayless-curve in leading a team.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
