No simulated Blazer love from NBA Live 09

NBA.com has their 2008-09 season team previews up.  Here is the Blazer's: http://www.nba.com/preview2008/por.html

The story from NBA.com is about what you'd expect. They speculate how much Oden will affect the wins collumn and whether the team will make the post-season. What caught my eye and made me blink a few times was the NBA Live 09's simulated preview of the Blazer's season located in the box at the upper right.

33W"s 49L's!!! 10th in the West. No playoffs. How can this be? Granted it's a simulation, but still... Why does this make me want to rant and say bad words? Why do I suddenly regret pre-ordering this game from amazon .com? I really wish I had gone with NBA 2K9! This sucks! When the Blazers make the finals this season, can I sue them? Make them eat their lame product. Sheesh.

Is Live 09 not going to suck like 08?

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game

I don't know.

This is the first time I’ve bought an NBA Live of any game. The last NBA game I purchased was 2K4. I decided on Live 09 this year because I was intrigued by the game’s update feature where if you’re online it will automatically adjust the players stats and productivity by how well they’re doing in the actual season.

It's definitely an improvement

Live always looks nicer to me, so in most years I went with it and sometimes bought 2k too
I played the demo for Live 09, and they have improved the movements quite a bit. No more stupid hitting the ball behind the backboard and always getting pushed aside when the opposition penetrates. Better passing and defense (respectively more moves). Also, I like the crossovers and spins with the right stick in Live better. Which is used for the shot control in 2k, and that always confuses me despite making it more realistic. And I’m used to the Dynasty (franchise owner) mode in Live to bring out my inner GM. I love trying to make trades, and since 08 the CPU really behaves kinda realistic and rejects lopsided trades (no more two for one or three for one offers that automatically go through).

This time they also added a pretty nice gym again (which was removed in the previous version) in which you can shoot on multiple baskets, and now the rest of the team is also in there working out which also makes it fun to watch. There should also be some mini games in there, but that was not included in the demo. And I’m interested to see the player DNA in action, hope that finally keeps rosters and ratings updated in an easy way which was always my pet peeve (though I think that’s a feature both games have).

The only thing I don’t like about both this year: KG and Tony Parker on the covers.

Good to know, Norsktroll

You sound like an expert on the subject. If I ever have any questions I’ll come to you if that’s okay. What system do you have?

I have an Xbox 360 and was using NBA Live 08 and 2k8 last season

And before that played it on the PC for like 5 years.

Oh, and for our Spanish friend: NBA Live has a FIFA mode with the Spanish National Team playing a tournament since 08 ;-)

Don’t know if that’s included in 2k as well, can’t remember seeing it in the last version.

Good

I’ve always enjoyed the Live series, but last years was terrible. The controls and physics just flat out sucked. I was an “Inside Drive” guy on Xbox, that game rocked………you could actually block shots.

Live can be fun

but really it’s no match for the 2K series. I don’t know what system you are using but the 360/PS3 version of 2K9 looks to be really amazing this year. They have an online feature that let’s the community create updated rosters and have them available online as well as create a player “legends” and stuff. The franchise mode is totally revamped and looks really great. 2K4 was actually IMO the weakest of all 2K games that have been put out. It was the most “arcadey” and they really have been putting out a solid product since then. Here’s to hoping there isn’t any minor “bugs” at all this year though.

Yes

But who knows how well it’ll actually work. Ask me that sometime mid-season

Yes

The new Dynamic DNA and NBA Live 365 feature is supposed to provide nightly updates of player ratings/preferences, rosters and such if you want. That was always one of my criticism that all that stuff was frozen in August and you had to manually update things or download some patches from fan sites.

and....

Why did PC get kicked to the curb this year? I will have to buy a console in order to play any ’09 games.

mos def a bummer

but Live on PC has always been way weaker than it’s console counterparts. I don’t think any iteration of PC basketball has been any good at all.

by avalonzero on Oct 2, 2008 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I was just reading a developer interview and NBA 2K9 is supposedly coming out for PC this year!

I’m not sure if it’s with the others ( I doubt it) and I haven’t found anything else but it came straight from 2K.

by avalonzero on Oct 5, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely a 2k fan

I like game play that makes me feel like i am actually controlling a game that I normally watch on TV. NBA Live has always had a very Arcadey feel to it and never felt quite right. Also the Dynasty mode in 2k is much deeper and always seemed a lot more fun than what I played in Live, the whole 2k is going to have the same exact thing as EA’s “DNA” as well with a few minor differences. Live has always seemed to play catchup, so we will see if they took the next big step this year.

His last login was the 11th.

His proposed date of return was the 19th, and that didn’t happen. I think the “fatty is a man of his word” conversation can be put to rest.

If he returns, more power to him. But hopefully we’ll all just let him fade away…

hmm

i havent played live or 2k in a few years, but back in the ps2 heydays 2k was always much better than live. live always had better graphics but 2k had more realistic gameplay and more depth to the game.

by Philthyanimal on Oct 2, 2008 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

one thing...

that i was disappointed about Live 08 was just how low the player ratings were! I have always purchased NBA Live since 2000 and to see Adam Morrison having a better rating then Roy AND Aldridge had me thinking what the!!!

by Enigmah on Oct 2, 2008 5:22 PM PDT reply actions

I was about to go on a mini rant

about this terrible, terrible simulation, but you summed it up quite nicely. I will add one thing: each simulated season statistic has a gaff as bad as AI on 1st team defense. Actually, I’m sorry, I can’t hold back.

Miami wins the East?!!? As in, a 40 game improvement, which is only 2 shy of Boston’s record. So, basically, Beasley equals Kevin Garnett.
Paul Gasol makes 1st team NBA??!!!? Everyone making this game must be a Laker fan.
Dallas/Denver is the 3rd/4th seed in the West!?!?!? Just no.

Back to the drawing board, this game isn’t finished!

Devil's Advocate or just argumentative?

NBA Live has sucked for years

I am sick of having a 3 step advantage on the nearest defender and them still being able to block my dunk from behind.

?

That has almost never happened to me, and I play on the hardest levels all the time. What makes me rather crazy was the ability of quick players to get by all defenders all the time on both ends of the floor, which looks to be much improved now.

Odenied!

by Norsktroll on Oct 2, 2008 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Sheesh. I was already regretting my purchase...

Now I’m disheartened, dejected and bummed out. My initial plan was to go with 2K9, but my really cool, loud-spoken friend (you know who you are, curse your silver tongue) convinced me that Live 09 was the red-hot ticket with their super DNA crapolla. I didn’t know 2K9 was doing it too. Guess I should’ve researched.

Well, I guess the only thing to do now is order 2K9 and sell Live, or maybe I’ll keep both and do comparisons, but I really don’t have time… sorry, thinking out loud and typing again. I shouldn’t do that.

You know, selling it here might not be a bad idea.

Are there any site rules or regulations against it? Just curious. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing with it, yet. Maybe one of my friends will buy it from me (not my pro-Live friend – he has XBox). Christmas is an option, as well. Heck, I may keep it as Norsktroll has made some eloquent speeches for Live. I don’t even have it yet, so I just don’t know.

But I do know you can’t have it for a miserly $20! Unless you’re willing to pay a $35 shipping charge?

I am sorry...

But due to the current energy crisis, a Star Trekporter Delivery (also known as STD) would run about $35k. Also, I would need precise coordinates as well as a precise time. It wouldn’t do if an error was made and the game suddenly materialized in someone’s skull. In the event of such an occurence, you the purchaser who supplied the erroneous information would be legally responsible for any damages real or imagined.

You may however arrange to contract an STD from a less reputable source than I.

Did anyone else have problems with Live 08 player rankings?

I had Lamarcus’s and McRoberts stats switched, and Maurice Almonds and Deron Williams stats amongst others switched. Soooooo anoying that I had to do my own rankings for so many players and then I would miss one and play against the Jazz and maurice almond lights me up for 30.
I will never buy Live again, I’ve been a Live fan since I was in grade school. NEVER AGAIN the last few years have sucked! The programers have small B-Ball IQ;s and Im not going back to them.
2K9 Im all yours!

The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

It's developed in Vancouver, so yeah...

I like both, but usually go with Live. And with the new upgrade features I hope things like that will be fixed very fast.
