Why you shouldn't sleep on the blazers

First let me say that there are plenty of people who aren’t sleeping on us at all. In fact, this post could just as easily have been titled “why people are expecting the blazers to be good when they haven’t done jack squat.” But it seems that a lot of pundits out there are predicting the blazers to squeak into the playoffs or barely miss them with only a slight increase in wins (with the number of wins required to qualify for the playoffs being predicted as <50). After skimming through some of the comments in reaction to John Hollinger’s prediction on ESPN (Hollingers an idiot, no he’s not, yes he is), it seems that this prospect is a little upsetting for those of us who are expecting greatness sooner than later.

So I’m not going to talk about the obvious reasons (Roy and Oden…c’mon) or lay out both sides of the argument here (again, keep the title of the post in mind) but I can briefly summarize the negatives: yes, we’re young and there will be “growing pains” (Jerryd Bayless’ voice will continue to get deeper and undoubtedly Greg Oden will begin growing hair in strange places).  Yes, injuries could derail our season, (but the same could be said for 29 other teams). Yes, there will be a minutes crunch that will probably leave some players unhappy (but the cream will rise to the top). And yes, a large part of our success this season will depend on the play of the almighty G-GOD (because why can’t I throw one more ridiculous greg oden nickname into the hat?), but keep in mind we hit .500 without him last year.

Now, the meat and potatoes:

L.A.:  the Lamarcus Aldridges of Anaheim. Not only does his game perfectly compliment the game of the talented Mr. Oden (what are we calling them anyway? The twin towers? The S.W.A.T. team? Thunder and Lightning? Somebody get on this with another fanpost or something), but with his new and improved 3 point shooting ability, his transformation to Rasheed Wallace minus the crazy is complete. And yes, that’s a good thing. I think a lot of people outside of Portland are not giving this guy the credit that a player like him should deserve coming off a season where he averaged 17 and 7.

Leadership and clearly defined roles: Brandon Roy is the brains. Greg is the muscle, LA is the looks, and Jerryd is the crazy. Done and done.

Our bench: by my count, we only have like 3 towel wavers, or guys who will probably be wearing street clothes underneath their team warm-ups . RLEC, the French fry, and #15 (because it doesn’t really matter who gets that last rosters spot). Which is pretty awesome when you think about it. I know that it is important to trim down your playing rotation but this is one of the few categories that I think we have an edge in compared to teams like N.O., L.A., and S.A.. We have guys that can come off the bench and provide a spark at multiple positions and the competition these guys will create in training camp and practice is only going to push our starters to become better themselves.

3 pt shooting: Q. who’s going to be open when GO time gets the ball in the paint? A. EVERYONE. Blake finished at like what, 5th in the league in 3 pt shooting percentage? Martell is going to have a career year shooting the rock and Rudy isn’t going to notice that the line is farther away when he’s shooting with his eyes closed. I think everyone is going to benefit from a serious post presence and with the progress our “vets” have made plus the addition of 2 premier perimeter players (granted, from the euroleague and NCAA), I don’t think perimeter shooting is going to be a problem like it was back when Derek  Anderson and Damon Stoudemire were regularly clanging wide open 3 pointers off the rim.

We have the dancing lady: seriously, have you seen that lady in the corner of the rose garden who starts dancing like crazy when the blazers go on a run? Never seen us lose when she gets up on the big screen. I expect her to be going absolutely NUTS this year.

Nate is a good coach and the players have bought in: all the reports from this year’s training camp seem to indicate that the players are ready to put defense first, they trust the coaching staff, they trust each other, and they want to win. Ever look around at the rest of the league and see all the distractions? Gilbert Arenas with the knee and the weirdness, Lebron denying that he wants to leave Cleveland from Jay-Z’s Brooklyn penthouse, Ben Gordon signing the qualifying offer, DUI’s, Marijuana, baby mama drama; we have a great locker room right now that’s ready to play hard and I think that can go a long way.

So these are just some of the things I have been thinking about when I read “temper your expectations” articles. Well, theres more but its like 1230 at night and this is getting ridiculous. So what are your ideas? Why do we think the blazers are going to skip ahead of established, veteran laden teams like the suns, mavs, or nuggs?

Hey - nice summary!

Add Frye to the shooters? According to Channing it is so. Also Travis can get us more range whenever he wants.

Perimeter defense going to be better? Occasionally Batum will be needed this year – kind of like the secret defense hound Coach Nate can unleash to stop a wing (ok – it might take a few months). Blake will not be much different I would think and Roy is solid but Bayless’ quickness and Rudy’s court sense and even Sergio’s improved emphasis could all be adds. The real question to me is Martell and Travis on defense. If these two progress to above average for wings it will be hard to find a drop-off in the team.

Interior defense may be the biggest add with indeed Greg and Joel together or for each other nailing down the mistakes and allowing more gambling. I remember Ike as having a huge defensive impact from his wingspan and smart tough play. Channing, maybe not so much.

My own impression is Coach Nate and staff are more than good – they may be Coach of the Year good. They preformed miracles last year and Coach Nate has another summer with USA team and preparing the defense against the wide variety of teams they faced. His work will make Denver a better defensive team this year as Melo has bought the concepts. His work will make Utah a better team with Boozer and Deron suddenly broadened. I expect the coaching this year to be really outstanding.

Your points on leadership are good but it remains to be seen if Bayless is willing to be the rookie he is this year and defer to Blake and Roy and LaMarcus. we don’t yet know how Rudy will be as a leader on the White team but my suspicion is that this is one of his strongest areas. He is not flashy but his teams have looked to him to carry them in the past and once he is comfortable he may will be a positive force for leadership as well.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

I like the focus the Blazers are putting on D

In one of the scrimmage video Barndo said that he and travis were playing against each other to improve their abilities. I take this to mean that Roy fins Outlaw to be the most formidable wing defender. This is good to hear though I’d likeot hear more about Martell’s defense. THese guys are really pushing each other. Ithink we’re going to suprise some teams early this season, starting with the Lakers (no one likes to get blown out in their home opener).

Thanks

If I’m going to use a phrase like “Nasty aLAmODE,” and be offended at someone calling it corny, it’s really time to take a long, hard look in the mirror and reassess my priorities.

Or maybe I just should take myself more seriously……jerk. ;)

Let's stay away from Nasty aLamODE

because it will take only one bad game for fans of other teams to pervert it to Nasty a Commode.

I misread the title of this as

"Why you shouldn’t sleep with the Blazers. I was a little hesitant to click on this, then saw my mistake.

Wow.

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

Man I love him.

I suppose you could write that up too...

Well that turned out weird

The undercover part was supposed to be bold and italic…oh you get the idea.

Still, I would never. I’m not that kinda gal.

NO!

I tend to joke a lot, but I really am not scary stalker-ish, no matter what you may think.

But, keep the jokes about it coming, I don’t mind

Crazy

Crazy how all the prognosticators find ways to down play what they really see. Almost that they hold back what reality appears to be. Don’t get me wrong, this team hasn’t proven anything as far as this current group. But, with these pieces why don’t we see more, ( I know there has been some) “this team is going to be unbelieveable this year”. I can remember when Boston got the big three and everyone immediately said “thats the team to beat” and they were. I recognized that they were all proven vetrans. The only true negatives you can find are potential injuries, and youth for a few players. All the ingredients that result in high championship caliber teams is here, Leadership, chemistry, coaching, depth, outside shooting, inside play, defenseive center(s), strong guard play and of course incredible management and ownership. I’m tired of hearing, lets wait and see how they play.

Aldridge is underrated

And that’s by Blazer fanatics here as well. A lot of people seem to not see his talent, and that blows my mind. He underperformed a little based on my expecations (two more points a game and two more rebounds please), but it was his first year starting after barely playing the year before.

I expect him to explode this year. He’s better else my fantasy team sucks.

People shouldn't sleep on the Blazers.

Many slept on them last year. And look. 41 wins, Brandon an all star with MVP talk, 13 game winning streak. Enough to wake up those who slept on us. All the previews said we were supposed to suck. This season let’s keep the sleepers awake by making some noise in the season. Oden dunking on K-be’s head, Roy hitting from downtown. Noise like that sounds good. To the sleepers: Don’t sleep on the Blazers.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
