A Major Apology

A comment by Norsktroll in one of the Season Preview posts came like a thunderbolt out of the blue to strike me on the head, making me aware that I had done something quite careless, thoughtless, and really inexcusable.  I've been writing these season previews for easy consumption, keeping them brief, general, and at times humorous.  But in doing so I failed in one of my critical duties as a blogger, which was to point you to where you could get a better estimation.  In case you haven't noticed, the NBA blogroll at SBN has grown considerably in the last couple of months and it will grow even more.  This network is full of writers that really know their stuff about their teams.  By not providing links to them in the season previews I've done so far I've not only been insulting them, I've also (unintentionally) been implying that my write-up is better or more accurate than theirs.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

My only excuse (and it's a poor one) is that I've been doing these for years from the same template, which by now is quite old, and which didn't have a spot for links.  I've remedied that starting with today's post on the Magic, which cites Third Quarter Collapse.  Previews of teams for which we have SBN sites will include links from now on.

I apologize without reservation to the bloggers of teams we've already covered.  A list is below.  It would do my heart good if some Blazersedge readers headed to some of them and checked them out today.  The writers of this network really do have some good stuff to offer.

I'd also like to put an offer before Blazersedge readers.  I would love to have a reader designated as an ambassador to each of our sister site NBA blogs.  The ambassador for a site would check out what's written there and convey anything that might be of interest to us.  This would be a great thing to do if you have secondary teams that you like that we also cover.  It would also be great if you just love the NBA and reading.  Let me know if you're interested in being an ambassador to an SBN-NBA blog and I'll organize it.

Here are the sources for teams that we've already previewed.  If you're interested, check them out!

THE ATLANTA HAWKS  PeachTreeHoops.com

THE MIAMI HEAT  PeninsulaIsMightier.com

Dave

I wouldn’t mind being an ambassador to the hornets. One of the only teams in this league besides the beloved I can stomach. Plus, I think the Hornets could be one of our greatest foes in the west for as long as they have Chris Paul. They’re a good team that knows how to hustle and play the right way. I would imagine their blog might have some interesting perspective on us considering we might be getting in each others way this year and next.

My mom babysat Paul Allen, no lie.

Thanks, Dave

Apology a little overdone, though. No one reading would have thought you were implying that your analysis is better than theirs. Besides, there are non SBN blogs that cover those teams, too. By not linking to them, I don’t think you imply your analysis is better than theirs.

This blog is YOUR opinion, not the final word of analysis. Your previews aren’t completely exhaustive, obviously.

But it’s always better to over-do an apology than under-do it. And thanks for the links.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Agree with jscot

I also like the Raptors…any chance I could become the ambassador to them?

Hmm

Doesn’t look like they have an SBNation blog. This limited to SBNation?

Didn't want to give you a bad conscience Dave

It was just a shout-out to a guy that seems to do a nice job covering his team, but like a few other recent newcomers to this blog network (Miami, Cavs,…) he is still so unknown that he seems to do it mostly for himself and a fairly small audience at least judging from the number of comments. So yeah, linking to them from arguably the most popular NBA one here (at least in the top 3) is a nice gesture to give your readers more insight if they want to and your fellows a little boost in traffic/awareness. I think I saw at least one SBN blog that also had guest bloggers weigh in on these team previews, similar to what you did for AOL FanHouse, but that’s not easy to coordinate.

As for the ambassador thing, Mortimer is kinda like the unofficial one to a number of SBN blogs and well known around Blog A Bull and Golden State of Mind. Tom has made some friends over at SLC I hear ;-)

If nobody else claims it, I would volunteer to cover the Mavericks since they are my second team and I fairly regularly scout their website, ESPN board, Toddy’s “Mavs Moneyball” SBN site, etc. And I’m probably one of the few people around here who can decently understand their star when giving interviews in his mother tongue. Yes, he is the only one, so I’m not as valuable as our Spanish friends :’-(

Dave,

Aren’t you just the sweetest little thinggggggggg. :)

I do like the idea of ambassadors. If anything, I’d like to volunteer to cover the Warriors since, A. There a very likeable team in my opinion and B. I live in the Bay Area so I get tons of coverage whether it be the T.V, newspapers, or just eye witness accounts since I get all the Warriors games down here.

I'm glad you are including links to other SBN sites.

I don’t blame you for not doing it before, but it is a good service for your fellow bloggers, and we would hope that they would extend us the same courtesy here at Blazer’s Edge.

I’m keeping up on the Bucks this year, so if Frank Madden or Alex Boeder put something Blazer fans would be interested in up on Brew Hoop, I’ll bring it to our attention.

No problem Dave

It’s all chocolate. We know your quips about the team aren’t the end all be all. It’s great that you fill us in with what you can though.

This is a message to you (hoo hoo)

Sergio will explode this year as the best NBA player ever and will take revenge impregnating all Portland and Blazers with the "chocolate" word.

Also

I would be an ambassador for the Sixers, but they don’t seem to have a sister site.

What is the punishment if someone actually volunteers to be an ambassador for the L*kers?

C'mon, Dave.

This is like watching Will Perdue hugging the championship trophy, tears in his eyes, cameras flashing, while Jordan lurks in the background.

I kid…and good show for extending a hand to the outside blog-world. I hope they all can build for their teams what you have built here.

Where did all these new blogs come from

Very good news. I always enjoy reading other teams blogs around the time we play them. I just hope SB Nation gets their links up.

With most only having 1 comment or so

It’s kinda funny, most other blogs are like this and come nowhere near our activity.

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

Man I love him.

The Thunder do not

have an SBN blog yet.

It would be fiendishly clever of someone here, posing as a thunder fan, to start one and operate that sucker, giving the thunder all the recognition they deserve.

I think tominhawaii would be a great Thunder Dave…

by raoulduke on Oct 2, 2008 10:52 AM PDT   0 recs

A few candidates are already warming up, but I doubt SBN would consider any of them :)

http://benditlikebennett.blogspot.com/ (well, maybe they would, since that was already crownded the best blog covering the Thunder by Ball Don’t Lie, while BE only came in 3rd for the Blazers. There are also two serious ones)

Why only SB blogs?

While I appreciate the new links, I am kind of troubled by the use of only SB blogs. I come to Blazer’s Edge to get a complete picture of hoops not to be fed just SB related info. I’m not asking for a complete run-down of all team related links from around the web (in all your free time Dave!) but there has to be some decent blogs/sites out there for teams that are not part of SB that deserve linking in these previews.

That said, thanks for all the previews and everything you do Dave, its a pleasure to read your stuff!

by EBeav on Oct 2, 2008 12:40 PM PDT   0 recs

You named the reason yourself

I depend on you guys to find the best material out there on the web. It takes basically 100% of the time I have for blogging just to do what I already do and keep up at least marginally with the major Blazer sources and Truehoop. Frankly I wouldn’t be able to find the best Charlotte Bobcats site out there. I guess I could Google the team and just pick the first blog that gets mentioned, but that’s hardly accurate or satisfying. However the SBN blog writers all have a history and the sites are right there, one click away. There’s no excuse for me not to mention them at least when all it takes is an easy link. I absolutely encourage readers to expand our blog knowledge by linking other blogs in the comment sections of the various previews.

When branching out, especially when working with volunteers

you go after the low hanging fruit first. If that works out pretty good, then add more layers. The SB blogs are a good way to start.

Minor apology: Not pointing BEdgers to other SBN sites.

Major apology: Not pointing me to free donuts.

ok am I the ONLY one who hates all the other teams in this league?

Dave I love ya man, but I don’t even talk about other teams, let alone read about them. I hate ex-Blazers the moment they leave our team, and like the wise Charles Barkley once said about his opponents: “All I know about Angola is Angola’s in trouble”

Same thing for our opponents. Call me ignorant, call me dumb and lazy, just don’t call me late for dinner, or donuts.

On that note I plan on being the Ambassador for this Great Blog called Blazers Edge.

Knowledge of the enemy provides insight into who we are, what we are, and good we actually are.

I’ve asked his permission to be his mini-me but he hasn’t replied, which I guess means no. You’ll have to wait until he says yes, in which case I can approach him with personal requests from folks like you willing to pay for a favor, or you’ll have to bribe— er, ask him yourself.

Er, excuse me, gentlemen

I take exception to the “Ruler of the Free World” terminology.
1. When the time comes, I’ll rule the whole world, not just the free part.
2. When the time comes, I’ll be ruling, which means “free” will have to be redefined. Everyone will, of course, be grateful (on pain of death) for the wonderful freedom I grant, but free won’t exactly mean what it means now, if you get my drift.

Thank you.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
