Greg Oden sidebar

Here is a link (I hope..... never done this before ) to Quick's interview with Greg Oden and others......it really hits home....and shows he is putting a lot of pressure on himself , that may be reflecting in his game play
This solidifies the nick name many have given him, in that he truly is a "Man Child"
The guy does not have a lot of high level basketball experience ....and will be a lot more of a work in progress player than most people think.....but if you read this article, then you can draw your own conclusions.

Ugh,
I cant see how this will help Oden. Come on its been four, count that, four pre-season games. The dude is 20 years old, hasn’t played in forever, and Quick is telling him he’s been disappointing, to his face! I guess I missed it when Quick became one of the coaching staff.
Personally I’m not surprised that GO is a little rusty and not really that upset about it either.
Message to Greg! “Bro, focus on the positives man! Your scaring the crap out of every team and every opposing player when they see you come out of the tunnel and take the court. Their all thinking how the heck are we gonna get inside on them now. If your shot aint falling your dunks are. Work on the fundamentals, you’ve got all the rest of the season. With you on the court we are way better than we ever were before!”

Yeh the media has no scrutiny
Maybe Greg should have stood up and crushed his head like a grape…..No harm no foul, so to speak
Greg is a mild mannered guy and it may seem his nature may be holding him back some….If he can get mad….., then look out opposing teams……Maybe Quick might have awakened a sleeping giant? ( One that says, I’ll get back to you later, pal. Or, Mr. Quick, I may want to interview you at the end of the season.
One should never get too cute when teasing big people with discouraging words……I could guess Quick will say, I was only trying to light a fire under you, big fella (trying to avoid the head squashing)

boy oh boy,
that article sure seemed like it didnt help matters. maybe the media will be wooed by the starting of batum and will leave greg alone for awhile. probably too much to hope for.both these young men are in for a baptismby fire.

yeah, definitely too much to hope for
nobody outside of diehard blazer fans cares about batum right now. oden sprains an ankle and gets front page espn coverage.

We love Greg, not what he can bring us (although we'd love that too)
Yes, we’d be stoked beyond belief to get that champsionship. But that has little to do with how we feel about Greg overall. That’s the great thing about being in Portland. It’s who you are overall, and not just some athletic accomplishments that make you a treasure for the state and the fans. Greg’s already proven himself as a person. Anything he does beyond this is gravy. Honestly, I’d rather see that big goofy er I mean handsome smile than to see him grimacing and agonizing over a few losses. In other words, Blazer fans love this dude. We’re not going to stop supporting him if he doesn’t live up to all the hype. He’s a Blazer we’re going to love forever. No matter how he plays.
If someone can relay this message to Greg, we’d be happy. Also, tell him my mom thinks he’s the cutest basketball player in history.

Oden Oden Oden...Poor greg oden...
Ka FOEY!!!…..lol…
Underwhelmed hu?
let me see if I can take this into context…underwhelmed.
if my betterhalf told me that last night was “underwhelming”……
if my employeer told me that my last assignment was “underwhelming”
if the police officer who gave me a ticket last week told me this week while writing another ticket for the same exact thing last week that he was, “underwhelmed” with my driving…
underwhelming…..
why feel underwhelmed? becuase he know’s he’s better? becuase he know’s that when he does make A mistake that it will be diagnosededed and skrutinizedededed to the max? becuase of expectations?….but who’s?
his? does greg expect to be the greatest center who’s ever played the game?..or does he just plan on being….average?..
it really depends on who he is underwhelming too…..if it’s just me, WHAT THE HECK DO I KNOW….. if it’s jason quick, well….
but if greg is angry becuase he’s “underwhelming” to us……..well then….that would be hurtful and make me sad. I don’t want him to feel like he HAS to win R.O.Y. I don’t want him feeling like he HAS to bring portland a championship…..
THAT IS ROY’S JOB. THAT IS LAMARCUS’ JOB, THAT IS TRAVIS’ JOB, THAT IS JOEL’S JOB
not our rookies….his job is to go out there and impose his will with the ball. push bodies asside, and let the world know who GREG Oden is.
that’s his only responsibilty this season….and he needs to be having fun.
how to get rid of the pressure….time….time is the only thing that makes that go away.
he’ll loosen up soon as the season starts rolling….
just so you all know, ODEN DID GREAT HIS FIRST GAME AGAINST THE PUDDLERS WITH 5points, 9 boards, and 2 blocks….(if we win, I’ll be estatic with them stats)
that’s all that matters greg….WE WIN. that’s all that will matter. so quit trippin on quick and us. :)

The expectations of fans or the media
should have no relevance on what Oden does on this team…but the spotlight on him, adds pressure for him to succeed….He is still just a kid, in a mans body and he’s on a team of young people….(but they are a very stable group that will help him to relax.)….developing players out of high school and 1 year of college has been a standard for many teams….the players that enter the NBA from this level are hardly ever ready for big time….Maturity is a factor, not just skills. The NBA gives the opportunity for young men to make the most of their skills….it is all too alluring for most and they lose out on refining their game at a lower level, before entering the big time and big time pressure of the NBA, media, and fans.
He needs playing time and minutes in the NBA game….the guy is a presence, and as soon as he figures that out, much of his hesitance will begin to go away…..he is just putting too much pressure on himself, and the media is a large part of that…….
This team is not about one player and their future not solely in the hands of Greg Oden…..If he ends up being a Bill Russell type player….what could be wrong with that? They won a lot of championships without a scoring center…..
Oden will help this team (even this year)…he may fall below expectations in some people’s mind, but he will be a large part of the success of this team…….The media has the luxury of taking jabs, setting criteria for their own perceptions, and then leaving the scene without checking for damage…But, they are also our inner connection with the players. We get to draw our own conclusions on what they choose to bring to light…..

One other thing
Most media people have a degree in journalism, or some background there of. It is understandable that their perspective is bias towards “journalism” and probably not based on personal experience in playing the game. This is why they make relative assessments on their somewhat un-qualified viewpoints. An association with the game alone, does not qualify them to make comments about something they may know very little about.
So Quick is a connector to the fans and he’s doing his job, and Greg is a story that gets a lot of attention

I don't think that "underwhelming" is an inaccurate assessment of Oden's performance thus far...
…………………………….. UNLESS expectations for him were on the low end of the spectrum.
He is NOT going to be a 35 minute per game guy.
He is NOT going to haul down 20 rebounds.
He is NOT going to average 30 points.
He is NOT going to swat 7 shots a night.
If you thought he was any of those things — “underwhelming” is accurate.
Truth is, he’s a 25 min./12 pt./ 8.5 reb./1.5 bk. guy that should NOT have been formally given the starting role by Nate yet.
Once expectations get in line with reality and Oden learns to deflect criticism, no problems.
The Blazers do not NEED 35 minutes, they have Joel.
The Blazers do not NEED 20 minutes, they have Joel.
The Blazers do not NEED 30 points, they have LMA and Brandon.
The Blazers could USE 7 blocks, obviously — but that’s fantasy land. They don’t NEED that to succeed.
No problems.

Perspective
He’s 20. Sat for a year. And — as “underwhelming” as JQ may find him — he’s already giving opposing teams a huge headache when he’s on the floor.
Man, I can’t wait for the season to start, so this level of reporting — the “Quick’s Bathroom Blog Reports Roy Had Corn for Dinner” articles — can stop, and we can talk about, you know, basketball.

It's already a fanshot ;-) Well, copy and paste since it's an interesting article and will likely make some waves:
I can see Greg dunk or block real hard in the next game and yell “underwhelmed”
He will remember that every time he sees Quick for a while, that’s for sure. That being said, yeah is hook shot and jumper don’t look fluid, much less automatic. He still puffs after running up and down a lot, his hands grabbing the end of his shorts. He doesn’t get great elevation, like J.A. Adande also pointed out in his observations. And depending on what your expectations of him were, that can be a bit "underwhelming". He doesn’t look as smooth yet explosive as a young Shaq or Robinson right now. But there is no reason why that can’t still come over the next months with some improved conditioning – and more experience actually playing the game against big guys trying to stop him. If it takes him a season to get really above the level he already was at athletically, so be it.

I don´t get it, Quick. Oden is suffering a lot of pressure and you like to put more on him?
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

I was thinking the same thing
in the fan post I made about this article below.
J.Q. should give him a couple months before bagging on him. Give him a chance.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

That was amateurish thing for Quick to say
For age 20 and so few NBA games under his belt Oden’s development is just right — big men take longer — this guy will get stronger for the next 8 years without trying — that’s just biology…everyone is piqued on his potential — and should be — but he might not reach that for awhile — but it’s gonna be a great thing to watch! Meanwhile he will begin his career at a level most never achieve — and have the potential to be one of the best ..

I usually like Quick....
but this article fails to take into account what KP and Nate have been saying all along. That Greg is going to take some time to before he starts dominating. He has yet to play even one NBA game, coming off an injury, and he is supposed to be dominating?! The fact that Greg is doing as well as his, is a testament to the trainers and all the hard work Greg has put in rehabilitating himself. Remember, this is his rookie season so he is not going to be the player this year that he is going to be 3 or 4 years from now. Even Roy, who was as NBA ready as they come, is a much better player now than he was his rookie season. People need to chill out and be happy that we are the team to have Greg Oden.

Lets see here
11pts, 6.3reb in 20 min=22pts, 12.6reb in 40min all on 53% shooting from the field?
From a guy that has not played for a year, is coming off knee surgery, is dealing with being one of the most hyped players in the last 5-6 years, does not have his NBA game shape and has a bit of a confidence problem at this time?
I just do not see how this is constructive towards the situation. Yes his hook shot need some work but a dunk is the highest percentage shot to take yet the hardest to get. If he can only dunk so what?
The scary thing is what will it be like when Greg DOES settle down and start to play with confidence, much like Brandon is playing with this year.
“I know that I am better than most of the players in the NBA and now I do not have to fear what they can do to me.”
Once that time comes the NBA should quiver in their Nikes.
The season cannot get here soon enough.

I agree with the point that production needs to be weighed against minutes played...
………………………….. HERE is how I am going to tally things. COMBINE the stat lines for GOd and Pryz. If it sums to less than 40 minutes, that is very much on Nate — should be 44+, in my opinion.
Sum of points = 18, Sum of rebounds = 14, Sum of Blocks = 2.
Those would be very fine numbers for the 5.
Take some of the pressure off Greg by understanding that the center position on this team is a TANDEM.

Actually, that's a bit low on the over/under for sum of rebounds, but you get the point. If Pryz gets his minutes, figure Sum = 16.

Quick inflates hype, then expresses premature disappointment
Quick has been the Blazer’s biggest sunshine pumper and cheerleader this past year. On paper, on radio, and in chats, he has been hyping up the potential of Oden to the point where a performance anything less than Olajuwanesque would be “underwhelming.” He’s the victim of his own hype. The Blazer front office and coaches have consistently stated publicly their reserved expectations for this year. He’s coming off a major surgery, he’s out of shape, and he hasn’t played organized basketball for one year on top of being a young rookie BIG adjusting to the NBA. Quick’s article is a just self-discovery piece on why he’s been so wrong about his own expectations.

that's a good way of putting it
The media is not on the outside looking in, they are on the inside looking out (towards the fans)….Hype is part of the media agenda because it is their news story and they can add whatever flavor they perceive….It’s about basketball, but it is in his perception …..So it should be taken within that context…..He’s a fan too, …..that is doing his job (connecting to the fans)
His dissappointment is his cross to bear and he is unloading that on Oden (quite unfairly) and then passing it on to fans to draw conclusions

Ease up on Quick
Quick basically said that he bought into the hype and was expecting more from Greg. The article is, in some ways, self-deprecating. It illustrates the media treadmill Oden is on.
Do you want “both teams played hard” or do you want to actually hear what a player is feeling? If the latter, you are required to judge that person at their station in life. Greg is 20. The direction and popularity of the entire NBA rests on his motivation, his personality, and his knees. Unfortunately, that’s not hyperbole. Anyone who doesn’t crack a little under that weight is lying or has a God complex.
This guy is more than a basketball player. He’s a citizen, a brother, a friend, a homeowner, a son, a commuter, a medical patient, a single guy, a consumer, a spiritual being, etc. He’s 20 and trying to figure the world out with us all watching. If we abuse that privilege, he’ll close the door, as most NBA players have.

I think that is spot on.
Quick is not being critical of Greg so much as he is bringing up the insanity of the huge expectations and the way it has changed GO in the last few months. He is, in my opinion (that wasn’t so hard was it; it took me forever to figure out what IMO meant), criticizing himself, and the rest of the media for the scrutiny in which it looks at every move of the big guy. I was surprised to find that i really liked the article after reading all of the comments here.

(IMO) when you buy into the hype
you are claiming an ignorance of basketball and then you exploit the hype because you don’t know any better…..A game watched for entertainment, is not the same as understanding the game and knowing what is actually going on out there. There’s a lot more to it than getting the ball in the hoop. Concentrating on just one persons play, may be useful for scouts and coaches, the value of this view, by fans and media, is often without qualification……

Quick should know better, though
He’s watched him play a few pre-season games and already he’s “underwhelmed”? Because Quick himself has expectations that Oden hasn’t met? Oden shouldn’t have dignified him with a response. And Ben’s idea that this constitutes “whining” and is somehow predictive about what even his next game is going to be like is just nuts. Tempests, teapots, etc.
by flightrisk on Oct 19, 2008 9:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
so after reading 2000 comments on this subject between BE and oregonlive
can’t we just sum this up and say that Quick probably shouldn’t have written this article and Ben went a little overboard? I mean, some people are sticking up for these guys but the ratio is like 10 to 1 in favor of “that article sucked.” What I’m wondering though, is will all this reaction only reinforce this style of (reckless) writing? Do people look at all these comments and attention the subject brings and think, hey I’m on to something here! I’ll get hits and sell papers if I just write controversial “commentary.” Sometimes I think its best to ignore guys like John Canzano because hating on him only makes him more egotistical. But then I remember that this town only has one pro franchise and if you’re hungry for sports news, your options are extremely limited. I think people will always read the articles, the majority is just usually silent until you piss them off by writing something kind of silly.

I disagree
That article was great, should’ve been written the way it was. It was basically an apology to Oden. It helps us understand who the kid is. Ben’s maybe was a little too far, but Quick’s was fine.
It’s almost always our interpretations that matter. I’d bet you fifty million dollars that if the stock market, economic news, and other news coincided with this article, or if the Blazers won a game that day against LA, or if anything else happened that put Blazer fans in a good mood, the reaction would have been much more positive. If the mob’s fickle for Oden, it’s even more fickle for Quick.
