Can the Blazers go 10-0?

Remember the old tune, that was something to similar this:

"Hustle, swat it, now we got it, blazer fever, hope you caught, true believers every minute, you know you want it, come and get it! "

This song, to a variable degree, reminds me of Rocky.

I believe there is a tiger roaring inside.  It is chained up.  Further, I think it will be released in a few weeks against the L*kers.  The tiger also will not stop eating its 'prey' for at least 10 games.

This tiger is the Portland Trailblazers.  Do you think this team can start the season 10-0?  Is it too far of a stretch?  Will it break your expectations if they do indeed start 10-0?

I think it's a possibility.  If it happens, I personally think it will be due to the second unit.  Specifically, the Sergio-Rudy tandem, this pair may be the "eye of the tiger."

Agreed

People who think they will, have you looked at the schedule?

I reminded people of this last year and will do so again this year. We have a new team again. The only difference between last year and this year is that we actually have a core now, but a starter, a major back-up, and possibly a substitute starter are all new to the team. Additionally, once again, the starters haven’t played significant minutes together int eh preseason due to injuries.

I think you’re more likely to see a loss of ten games in a row than a win streak. if we win half the games, that will be an incredible feat for this team due to the teams, the travel, and our new team.

Luckily, this will be the last year major changes happen to this team and our core will be stabilized with Greg’s addition.

We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

but

If last year they could not start in a perfect manner then this year it will be impossible. Thats the reality.

by RipCity on Oct 18, 2008 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok

Yeah Blazers are Tigers and all those teams are nothing. If Oden would be a monster now it might be possible but as it is standing now.

by RipCity on Oct 18, 2008 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

put it this way

It is as likely that Blazers will go 10-0, as it is likely that they will go 0-10.

by RipCity on Oct 18, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

well, yes, of course

with probability… but, didn’t the ‘eye of tiger’ make the impossible possible?

yeah

only in the movies bro.

by RipCity on Oct 18, 2008 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah

If its possible why would blazers not use the possibility?

by RipCity on Oct 18, 2008 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

i don't think that blazers will start 10-0, but it is possible.

It probably won’t happen for obvious reasons; playing playoff caliber teams, injuries, chance/probability. I do think that we will probably go 5-5. That’s mostly a guess though.

bad poll answers Hotstuff!

I thought you learned your lesson. Yes and No are boring answers, we need more meat on them thar answers.

Just kidding.

Seriously though, of course they “can” go 10-0, anything is possible, but it’s highly unlikely.

by Bust a Bucket on Oct 18, 2008 2:36 PM PDT reply actions

I liked the original question.

Which was, “Can the Blazers go 10-0?”, as opposed to “Can the Blazers go 10-0 to start the season?”

If the question were about the chances of a 10-game winning streak ANY time this season, I’d say yeah.

I voted yes, that doesn’t mean I think we will go 10-0. It means we could go 10-0, in fact it should be 100% yes. Of course the blazers could go 10-0. what should have been asked is “will the blazers go 10-0.”

Humans aren’t monkeys or vice versa. We are in the same Order as they do, the Primate Order, but all monkeys are in different family groups. Humans do share the family group, Hominidae, with the Great Apes, so you could call humans apes.

Here are the first 10 games and opponent records from last year

Tue, Oct 28 @ LA Lakers 57 25 .695
Fri, Oct 31 San Antonio 56 26 .683
Sat, Nov 1 @ Phoenix 55 27 .671
Wed, Nov 5 @ Utah 54 28 .659
Thu, Nov 6 Houston 55 27 .671
Sat, Nov 8 Minnesota 22 60 .268
Mon, Nov 10 @ Orlando 52 30 .634
Wed, Nov 12 @ Miami 15 67 .183
Fri, Nov 14 @ NO 56 26 .683
Sat, Nov 15 @ Minnesota 22 60 .268

Strength of schedule: .541
SOS without Miami and Minnesota: .670
Only 3 home games, 2 of which are against playoff teams
7 road games, 5 of which are against playoff teams
3 back to backs
The last 7 games are in a span of 10 days
Even the game @Miami might not be easy. A healthy Dwayne Wade is a sight to behold.

A 5-5 record would be good

Hey-

Thanks for posting this… always helpful to see the games…

LA is the biggest question mark to me…

SA is without Manu and Portland is Home = W

Phoenix will be tough on a back to back… but you never know… new coach TP might blow it

I'd love to see Portland win the opener

on National TV, @ LA

I agree about SA and PHX. Maybe the Blazers will retire TP’s jersey during the home game against Wolves to throw TP off his game. Nah, that would be a low blow, not classy at all.

Strength of opponent

Is there a way to weight in our record against these teams last year?

by zaruga on Oct 18, 2008 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Help me to understand your point---

what would this tell us? Don’t teams look different each year? I personally think the L*kers are a good case in point where the addition of Gasol and Bynum is going to mean some chemistry adjustments… they may take a long time and might not look like last year’s Finals team for awhile.

by hotstuffdb22 on Oct 18, 2008 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

The Blazers were 13-17 (.433) versus those opponents over the course of last year. Considering 6 of those came against Miami and Minnesota, I’m not thrilled.

Other Team vs. Blazers & average point differential

LA 2-2 Lakers by 2.25 (home team won every game)
Houston 4-0 Houston by 10
NO 2-2 NO by 5 (home team won every game)
Utah 1-3 PDX by 6.666 (won both @ home and won one @ utah)
SA 3-0 SA by 12.3
Minn 0-4 PDX by 10
Miami 0-2 PDX by 6.5
PHX 3-0 PHX by 9
Orlando 2-0 Orlando by 9

rec'd mag's big post with games and record

if you take all those percentages, subtract each from 1.0, and multiply each of the totals, that is the percentage chance we win all the games
(1 – .695) * (1 – .683)…………etc. In other words, lowww probability. Of course, this is assuming no change from last season to this season. Obviously, we’ve gotten better, but even if you double our odds when you get all done, they’re still gonna’ be lowwww

He who laughs last thinks slowest.

by prezofdeath on Oct 18, 2008 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice work

But it would also be instructive to see the records of those teams thru 10 games last season. Often top teams—e.g., San Antonio—coast a bit early in the season. (I seem to recall the Blazers nearly beating the Spurs early on last year.)

Having said all that: no way these young Blazers come close to sweeping their first 10 games. I’m just hoping they survive them. The key will be getting to the all-star break somewhere around .500. Then the team can hopefully put it all together and make a playoff run down the stretch.

Phx: 8-2
SA : 8-2

Nice job again!

By ten games into the season, the good teams had already separated themselves from the crummy ones, hadn’t they? So much for my hope that these tough opponents will be less imposing so early in the season.

Clearly, our young Blazers have their work cut out for them.

Good start yes. 10 and Oh no.

It would be nice if they started 10 and 0. I do think they will get off to a good start. 10-0 seems like a little much. Tough opponents in the first 10. Like San Antonio, Phoenix, and a tough divisional opponent in Utah.

Run the poll again

and change the “Can” to “Will”. Its the only interpretation that makes sense.

The question allows for confusion. It appears that a large number thought the question meant “Is it POSSIBLE for the Blazers…”. Makes no sense to ask that. Of course they CAN, but most likely won’t. Why bother to ask when there’s only one answer?

I Don’t believe that many folks thought they WILL win 10.

Will the Blazers win the first ten?

In a figure of speech, No Way, but that’s not to say it isn’t possible. Thinking about that killers row of opening games, I see a silver lining. I’ll start with them winning the three games against Minn/Miami. They will need to do that consistently if they expect to compete this year. That leaves 7 games. If they can win 3 of 7, they go 6-4 for a Very good start.

I thought your headline was just a teaser and was hoping for a discussion of how they might actually do in the first 10 games. How many of the first 10 do you think they will win?

Here’s something for Jazz fans (not utah; Sax. utah should trade their name back to N.O. for some heart and become the utah seagulls).

ESPN with breaking news: In a surprise move, the X today announced they are too afraid of the Blazers to play them at home. “I don’t want to get dunked on by Oden again. No, not again!”, a player who requested anonymity stated. “I have nobody to match up against Fernandez. I give up.”, stated the coach.
