Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Pick your poison: PTB in playoffs or LA championship?

Suppose you could choose between two scenarios:

1) The Blazers make the playoffs but are eventually eliminated while the Lakers go on to win the championship.

2) The Blazers don't make the cut in the competitive west but the Lakers get knocked out in their quest for the crown.

Personally, I'm torn.  Of course I'd like our crew to make the show this year, but I don't expect much out of them if they do make it.  They're not likely to win more than a single series, if any at all.  Since another year or two of seasoning may be needed to get into contention, a part of me would be willing to sacrifice the post-season to keep the hated hamster-defiling Laker fans down.

But, on the flip side, the playoffs are fun and it's about time we get the chance to cheer our team on again.  Not to mention, if we don't make it this year, what does that say about the development of our potential-laden roster?

No question here

My love for the Blazers outweighs my hate for the Lakers. Playoff experience for this team overwhelms being bummed out that LA won the title.

A more interesting comparison might be: no playoffs vs. the Blazers make the playoffs and are eliminated by the Lakers, who then go on to win the championship.

Doesn't matter.

A major goal for this year is to get playoff experience. The importance of this far outweighs what happens to one of our rival teams. In fact, if we get playoff experience against the L*kers that might be the best thing for us, since we know they will be a hurdle for us once we’ve reached our potential.

Word.

I agree

I just want to see this team in the playoffs again. If the Lakers win the title, then they win the title. I’d almost rather for that to happen then have them just keep getting hungrier and hungrier when we get better

obviously

Blazers knock out seed 1 lackers in the first round, FTW!

Oh shoot. I changed my mind already. I do want the Blazers to get playoff experience, then win ten in a row so nobody remembers the last time LA won.

Not worried about it.

Not only are the Blazers going to make the playoffs, they are destined to knock the Lakers out of the race, once they get there.

Blazer fans seem to have their priorities straight

Maybe I should changed the scenario so Blazers make the playoffs but get swept in the 1st round… by LA. I also think that playoff experience is important, but getting swept in round 1 sucks butt.

I get where you're going with this...

and I like watching intense playoff basketball and I HATE the L@kers… but at the end of the day, all I care about is my Blazers.

Making the playoffs means you at least have a mathematical chance to win the championship. With this team, especially with all powerful David Stern fully behind them (hence, the refs… you can’t be a Blazer fan and not believe there’s a conspiracy. There’s been far too many controversial calls. Only now, we’ve got them on OUR side!), I’d increase the odds. We WILL win championships (plural), it’s only a matter of when.

Make it and go.

I want the Blazers to make the playoffs. I want them to do well in the playoffs. Even if they are out in the first round at least they gain experience. I want them to and hope they make it. And go from there. Make my first season as a Blazer fan a good one. But if they have a bad season I must be loyal win or lose.

Playoffs

I agree with Canadian. This crew needs to get their first playoff experience this year. I think that they will have a chance to win a round this year, conference finals in 10, and NBA Finals win in 11.

by PABroncofan on Oct 17, 2008 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

Playoffs

Lets say they get in and promptly get knocked out in the first round. How much would that suck knowing LA was waltzing to another championship? Throngs of Kobe lovers proclaiming GOAT? Even more KB24 jerseys appearing in the Rose Garden?

I’m sure a part of me would second guess that decision through subsequent rounds if the PTB was unceremoniously escorted out of the first round. But then, yeah, I want PTB success first and foremost, so I think I would have to bite the bullet and then just try to turn off the TV once the home team got knocked out.

by shralpster on Oct 17, 2008 11:06 PM PDT reply actions

sorry, but...

that’s the worst question i’ve seen on a poll yet. of course you take the blazers in the playoffs. not even because of the feel good factor, but because your team needs to know what it feels like and how to handle the pressure.

as much as i hate the lakers, this is ludicrous. you take your boys getting all the experience they can get. there will be plenty of time to punk the l@kers in the future.

by blazersunited on Oct 18, 2008 12:37 AM PDT reply actions

so you're telling me

you have your opinion and it’s ridiculous to consider that someone may have a differing opinion? that’s dandy. it sounds like as much as you “hate the lakers” may not be as much as the next blazer fan does.

by shralpster on Oct 18, 2008 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

no, i'm telling you

you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. wanting the l@kers to lose is obvious, wanting your team to do as well as possible is even more obvious.

This wasn't as easy as I first thought

As I began to visualize Kobe Bryant prancing around in celebration, my stomach became a little queasy. I finally bit the bullet and picked the Blazers in the playoffs and the Lakers winning the title-option.

But PLEASE—no more polls like this one! I prefer to visualize Blazer success AND Laker humiliation.

Blazers in the playoffs. Kobe wins the Larry O'Brien trophy.

But when he hoists it in the air to celebrate it slips and he drops the 20 pound thing from 7 foot high on his foot. Ahh, now that works for me.

And injures his finger

in the process.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.
