Batum = Rookie of the Year?
Jason Quick thinks Greg Oden will be an all-star this upcoming season (just confirmed on O-live podcast). In addition, assuming Roy repeats his All-Star bid and Aldridge is as dominant as everybody hopes, we'll have potentially 3 All-Stars in February. In addition, a recent article on ESPN tells us that Nate McMillan is up for Coach of the Year. Let's not forget, we'll have a legitimate 6th man award contender in Rudy.
Now, even before the 1st game of the season, let's add one more pile of dressing on the dessert menu: Batum is Rookie of the Year. You can vote for this below.
It's not as far of a stretch as you might think. Imagine how much faster he'll improve his basketball skill-set and IQ being around such experienced teammates and opponents. He may have several +20-point games. In fact, with all the recent hype, I just moved him into my top-75 for fantasy teams. This kid could be a dream come true.
Or, we'll crash in December, and we'll be looking at ourselves and wondering exactly how soon we should import more International players to take over the team to prevent further downfall, and also adjust our philosophy of "building through the draft."
What will happen with all this hype??

I like Batum... but
he is the least likely to be ROY just considering the rookies WE have. I wouldn’t even put him in the top 10 right now. Not that he is bad or anything, he just hasn’t shown enough to make me think he’ll be in the running.
by In Walks Rudy on Oct 17, 2008 11:42 AM PDT 0 recs
True. Even so...
How crazy is it that Boom Boom Batum is becoming the LIKELY opening day starter at the three spot? What would the Vegas odds of that have been following summer league? 100 to 1? Lower?
I think he looked so bad in the summer for exactly the reason why he’s a perfect fit with the first unit – he’s an unselfish glue guy type player. Guys with tunnel vision (cough, cough, B-Rex) tend to excel, while the other guys disappear, making you think they can’t play. Even in the summer he looked great on D though. Brewer (not that he’s exactly a force) went something like 0 for 10 against Boom Boom.

Ummmmm
Is this serious?
He may have several +20-point games.
This is completely unfounded. I mean, I like Batum too, but this is just ridiculous. I don’t think we have any place to laugh at ridiculous theories by other teams when drivel like this is being pandered.

Also, that is a terrible poll.
None of those options are correct. I would vote for “Batum will have some success, mostly as a role player and on the defensive end, but will be on the bench for most minutes once Web is healthy.”

I agree on the pole.
Also HotStuff, you answered your own question incorrectly. You must be forgetting that Greg is eligible for ROY. Logic: If Greg Oden is an All-Star this season, he is also most likely to be ROY.

EXACTLY.
The only options are Batum starts for >50% of the year or gets shipped to the D-league? I’d say neither of those things has more than a 20% chance of happening, so I am the lone vote for Batum who. Batum will very likely make the active roster and get some PT, but once Web gets back, his minutes will be limited. But at that point, he’s probably not getting shipped to the D-league.

Yes or No Polls
should simply have yes or no as answers. Let the voter fill in the “why”.

he COULD have one… maybe… you know… if he got lucky, and started, and we were playing a bad team, and he was passed the ball a lot because people were sagging on him, and he hit them, and the players were all distracted by his good looks and drooling over him like Sophia… it could happen.

Yikes!
The ONLY way this happens is if quite a few things fall into place:
1) Oden has to either be the MVP, disappoint or get hurt.
2) Rudy AND Bayless have to disappoint or get hurt.
3) No “big name” rookie can have a decent year (Mayo, Beasley, Rose, etc).
4) Nic has to be NBA-ready. Which probably would mean holding the starting spot over Outlaw and Webster when Martell comes back.
5) Nic would have to average at least 10, 3, and 5, with a couple of blocks and steals to go along with them.
I’m not saying it’s impossible… but I think it’s pretty close.

You were doing so well until #5
Let’s say Nic plays so well that he takes-over the starter spot even when Martell comes back. With his chief competition for ROY playing center with him on the black team, Nic would have to double your numbers to win ROY. Oden is going to overwhelm the competition for ROY.
Nic’s only chance of winning ROY is if, when people look at Nic, they’ll have to blink hard and rub their eyes in astonishment because they think they’re seeing Scottie Pippen or Grant Hill in their prime.

Yeah...
I was pretty conservative with those numbers. I guess what I should have added was the fact that he would have to average at least that much, while being a disruptive force on the defensive end. Someone that the other teams in the league have to scout because they know he’ll be locking down on their best player, a la Bowen or Prince.

he’s a lock for most improved rookie though, because he looks so much better this year than he did this year.
by contemnor on Oct 17, 2008 12:16 PM PDT 2 recs
He has the potential to become a stat stuffing role player this season
Since he can shoot, rebound, block, pass, steal, and do a ton of intangible stuff (including being happy with only a small number of attempts and mostly focus on locking down his opponent). But not on a level that’s “Rookie MVP” worthy.

But to get it on our team you have to beat out Oden and Rudy and I don’t see that happening (as everyone else has stated).
I think we will love Batum and be astonished at some things that happen this year with his progress, but I don’t think he’s going to impress as much as the above two. Sorry.

with oden AND rudy on the same team? he’s nice, but blends in, doesn’t stand out. first off, no way oden makes the all star team, have you seen him play yet? ROY is poss for greg or rudy, depending on their minutes and their impact. nic will be a nice addition off the bench.
remember, last year nate was saying he was sure that we would win five or six games simply from the shooting of taurean green. ’nuff said.
