Should we trade Outlaw?
Just how valuable is he? Do we have guys that can step up and to the things that Travis does on the court? Can he really be an All-Star player with us? Personnally I think that we should 'LOOK' to trade him for a proper defender like Prince. I know I'm reaching pretty high on that one but it could be done if we give up a 1st round draft pick and maybe even a second round too. Their salaries don't match up so a third team would be included but I think it could be done. Both average around 13 pts and 4rbs but at least Prince can play good defense.
Most of us believe that he won't be an All-Star with us so if we know it then Travis must know it too. I am afraid that Outlaw won't be able to help the team win by starting. Losing the Webman could be bigger than we realize. He has aleady learned to start games and that is very different to coming off the bench. What I could see happening is that Outlaw will finally start to mesh with the starting 4 and Martell will be fit again. What shall we do then? All summer we have read how we might have to lose one, two or all three of Frye, Webman, and Outlaw. If we sign all three then we can't sign a marque free agent. Personally I'd sign Webman to an extention before the season ends. We need a small forward that can shoot the three really well and play good defense. Some of you might think that I am thinking too highly of Martell but so what! Ha Ha! Seriously, we need shooters and guys that are determined to play defense. Travis has not shown any determination on the defensive end. The most annoying thing is that he is the one with the body. I mean the length, you know the fact that he's 6-9 and Martell is only 6-7. Face it guys, we could struggle while the Webman is out, I hope we don't and I would never cheer against Outlaw but I just don't see him as a player that can fullfill his potential with us. We could be better off without him, with the arrival of Rudy and Bayless plus Frye, I believe that 2nd unit will be fine without him.
P.S- Udoka could be a better fit than TO, if we can't get Prince.

All of us need more realistic expectations of Outlaw.
All these trade Outlaw posts remind me of the guy who sold his stocks last Friday as the market was plummeting, only to buy them back at the end of Monday when they were skyrocketing again. The Stock Market is not driven on value, but perceived value. Everyone knows that one is supposed to buy low and sell high. But human nature sees the market and says, “Stock are going down, I’d better sell before it gets any lower,” or, “Stocks are going up, I’d better buy before it gets any higher.” As a result, human nature sells low and buys high.
Let’s then look at Outlaw. He is not having the best of preseasons. His value is falling at the moment. Human nature says to sell on his game before it goes any lower. This happened last year as well. But by the end of that thirteen game winning streak, we were ready to crown him King of Portland. It’s not how well you start the year, it’s how well you finish it, and veteran teams know that. I’m not going to worry until at least mid-season.
There are only two reasons to trade Outlaw at this point. One is if someone makes an offer that knocks Pritchard’s socks off. The second is if you believe Outlaw’s value will fall to zero, and that he’s junk bonds, in which case, the sooner you get rid of him, the better position you are going to be in. But Outlaw’s value is not going to change drastically, barring extraordinary circumstances. Even if he loses some playing time, or doesn’t thrive like he used to, his perceived value around the league wont come crashing down like last week’s Stock market, despite our own momentary perceptions.

This is my position as well
Regardless of one’s position on Outlaw as a player, I don’t see any need to move him just because he isn’t up to par. He serves a role. If we can find someone who serves a role we need more, or the same role plus other items, then a trade is worthwhile.

Trade shmade...
Travis Outlaw isn’t a terribly important peice to the Blazer franchise. By the end of the season he MIGHT be the 5th best player on the team. Anyone in the NBA can score 30 points on any given night. That isn’t a huge achievement, and it is a highly overrated one at that. He will not be an All-star in this league, no matter what team he is on.
Should he be traded? Doesn’t really matter.
For one, I don’t believe he is that valuable. It would be silly to think the Blazers could get anything that would truly give them “The missing Piece” and give them championship glory. I don’t think the Blazers or its fans would even miss him after 2 months.
Two: When Webster comes back, he won’t even be the best player off the bench. I’d give Rudy the green light to shoot before Outlaw, and if you really need a player to just throw up shots, well, now they have Bayless.
Outlaw is a “black-hole” with the ball, and I remember a guy named Zach that was one of those too.
by NBAstard on Oct 14, 2008 8:21 AM PDT 0 recs
I don't get your argument.
If “anyone in the NBA can score 30 points,” and “he is not that valuable,” then he definitely should be traded. Instead, we should pick up a defensive stopper/rebounder/hustle player to play that 3-spot. So, it really does matter if he should be traded.
Personally, I disagree that your assertion that Outlaw is a pretty average offensive player; I think that, used properly off the bench, he can be a huge weapon. Mainly it takes more than two bad preseason games to convince me about anything.

I think his word choice was improper.
My Legal writing Prof would comment: “unclear.”
I think that what he was trying to say is, that a player who has the ability to occasionally or inconsistently blow up for 30, as does Trout, is not as valuble as people might consider him based on just that fact.
Travis is the classic, probably might, could some day, if only he… kind of player. His athletic ability is the type of thing that makes people stop in their tracks, and imagine all of the possibilities, but the reality is that the possibilities are currently only products of imagination (and of course one very great shot which signaled the beginning of a very good streak).
I think that if you base Travis’ ability off of “two bad preseason games,” then you are being foolish. If, however, you evaluate him based on nearly an entire season of mostly unfulfilled expectations, you may be being reasonable.
Bottom line, Travis IS mediocre right now. He may be valuable, but compared to what? If a good deal comes along… the organization would be fool not to consider it at least.

Not based on two preseason games, just simple observation of his play as a Blazer…If someone wants him, make the trade…it may not be the best deal out there, but make it anyway…..We will not miss him that much…we don’t need the type of offense he provides, but we do need defense, team play, and rebounding …..
With that said, it is probable and the best thing to do , to wait for the team to roll out the season first….this will allow a more qualified decision to be made….The injury to Web is a factor and the play of Batum….Also other players, on the team, ability to swing over and cover the 3….We all know what Travis can do and what he lacks. The question will be, how long do we continue to give him an invitation to the party?

Trades
Why do we even bother talking about trades when they won’t happen till the deadline comes closer…
Stupid Outlaw is getting in the way of Batum’s development! He can’t develop without minutes. Look how bad Sergio is this year because he didn’t get minutes last year.
Batum is looking good but he is a rookie, period and won’t get prime minutes. Outlaw and Sergio get the minutes they deserve. Sergio worked hard in the off season and it is starting to pay off. Outlaw didn’t and he has catching up to do.

It is likely trades won’t be made…yet….But how can we excuse Outlaw for not being ready. His off-season approach and comments were enough to lose many fans……He lost me 4 years ago, so he is down to the last few paragraphs in my book…Hoping for another chapter, is OK, but not realistic.

I normally support Outlaw and have for years even when people wanted his head. If Batum keeps on progressing quickly, and the team does not need another player who can put up 15 shots. The Blazers need someone who is a threat, but can play defense.

Shush now
We have like a million injuries and you want to trade fellas? Sure if they’re offering a lock down defender we should be interested or maybe even a unprotected draft pick from a crummy team we could look into. (Rubio needs to be here so we can have Tres Amigos) but beyond that all this trade talk seems rather silly to me. You’re supposed to make mistakes in preseason. That’s why the league has it. Test yourself in game situation and all.
My other point would be you don’t really want to mess with this young teams head by trading one of the beloved players. Jack wanted to die after he was traded. Folks want to be here on this team. They can’t all stay, they know that it’s possible they might get traded for LaBron or whatever but not just to trade em like they’re just meat.
I’m in the ‘lets wait and see’ camp on most trade talk. (conversely I open trade posts first every time) Glutton for trade talk though I disagree with it. Darn you KP and your awesome trades that make me fell alive.

Travis is difficult to predict, but
I think he may end up like Jermaine Oneal if we trade him
by hotstuffdb22 on Oct 14, 2008 10:54 AM PDT 0 recs
so what?
Firstly, Jermaine O’Neal only ended up like Jermaine O’Neal BECAUSE he left here. He was given PT to develop that he wasn’t going to get here, and more importantly, the change of scenery and perception he was being dumped motivated him to suceed. And still in the end, he’s a guy who had a couple decent seasons, has never really been dominant, and isn’t a very strong defender.
If Outlaw goes to some scrub teams and averages 22 points per game, who cares? He wasn’t going to do that HERE no matter how long we keep him.

Yes he coudl fit in well
somewhere else, and I hope there are some teams interested…would make it a lot easier to move him
As for O’Neal, he has always been overrated, in my book….he was an all-star in the east because they didn’t have that many dominant big men….he would have been better at PF than center. He was on a team with enough talent, they should have made more of an impact on the weak eastern conference . He wasn’t a lost gold mine….silver maybe

sorry hotstuffdb22
Outlaw has no where near the up side of ONeal.
Oneal was a beast, but Portland for some reason didn’t develop him, when everyone could see his potential, and just as import his desire. All he need was a chance, and the rest was history.
With Outlaw, on the other hand, Portland has tried 3 years to develop him, and while he’s gotten better, he’s still very one dimensional, and seems to be lacking in desire to improve.

sign Webman to an extention before the season ends
IIRC, the “deadline” to sign Martell is coming up quick, like the end of this month? If the front office decides to wait, they’ll have to sign a qualifying offer (or "hold") that counts triple against the cap until the FA period begins in July. Then, any prolonged negotiations during the summer will tie up the cap and prevent KP from signing any new FAs
this is also the case with Frye and Diogu

Gavin seeks conflict.
If Travis stays in his role, there is no one better in the NBA, except that South American dude. People hate on Travis for having aspirations to be a starter, and not being a starter quality small forward. Travis is who he is. He fits in his role perfectly.
People clamor about consolidating the roster then talk about trading one of their best players off the bench. OFF THE BENCH! If you consolidate one of the top ten 6th man in the league with other players, you’re going to get a starter who does not want to be the 6th man off the bench.
I challenge all Travis (Sergio, Bayless, Martell etc.) hater to apply their expectation of him, to their life partner. Then I’ll see you at McFadden’s on Halloween, because you are going to be single by then.

Another stupid trade proposal.
Ignoring for the moment that this is based on nothing more than a couple of pre-season games – why would anyone think that Portland could simply acquire Tayshaun Prince by dealing Outlaw. Let me see… I’m Joe Dumars and I think I’m going to channel my old backcourt mate and trade my starting SF, who I was intending to focus on for more of the team’s, for someone who’s at best a potential candidate for 6th man of the year but who is also a possibility for losing minutes to two rookies.
Yeah, that sounds like a realistic scenario. In fact I’m borrowing $10,000 on the house and making a bet in Vegas that it happens. Just don’t tell my wife. I want to surprise her.

who says it's based SOLELY on 2 preseason games?
On this site, there has been a pretty consistent chorus of people that have been open to the idea of trading Outlaw all summer and back into last season as well. It’s not a majority, but there has certainly been a fairly constant stream of commentary suggesting that we move him if the value is right. Coming off last season, there was a lot of interest in him supposedly. If someone thinks his value has peaked, moving him might make a lot of sense. Count me in that group of people. Nothing personal, I just don’t think his game fits our team well at all.
I agree with you completely on the trade proposal though, like 99% of those suggested here.

I know it's subjective...
… unless I want to take the time to go back over all the posts…. but I’m of the impression that the trade Travis talk really flared up after a couple of his pre-season performances. Before that it was more of the nature that “we have too many guys and not enough minutes” (another topic I’ve felt was way over blown and over analyzed, but I guess people have to talk about something).
Folks who felt that a minutes crunch was going to be a big deal were debating on who should Portland look to move, in order to free up time. If I recall correctly, that tended to gravitate towards a Webster or Outlaw debate, as everyone assumed Rudy was going to steal SF minutes. As often happens, those discussions then drifted into “who can we trade to get that ______ guy we need” (with the blank being filled in by crafty veteran, lockdown defender, etc).
My opinion is that while there are a few here that are sharp enough to come up with a trade proposal that makes at least some sense, most of us are just indulging in speaking without thinking when we discuss trade proposals. Again, it is just my opinion, but the time to be thinking about possible trade scenarios is during the same time that teams normally do so – before the deadline and around the draft.

there was a small group that wanted to trade travis last year…but it seems like the massive amounts of travis threads this year was a knee jerk reaction to his poor performances. travis got off to a slow start last year, and he is doing it again this year. he came out of shape last year, and supposedly again this year. he’ll be fine with time.
if we trade him, we trade him. i’m ok with trading him if the scales tip in our favor, but i dont think travis or anyone else deserves to be on the trading block like z bo was.

logic
Is all too assuming…if one implies that trade talk is stupid…and the only reason he has is: that only stupid people talk trade and the smart ones stick to the junk drawer… it’s like having all branches of government in one blog member
One or two people in here assume that when people talk about a trade, it is based on how a person played in last nights game….Usually trade talk emerges because they have lost faith in a player and couldn’t care less if he was on the team anymore….Doesn’t mean it will happen, of course, but they are offing that it should be considered…..Likely or not….
A lot of trades make sense, but can’t always be pulled off…there are countless “almost trades” that never come to be….or take months to complete…..and maybe deals get worked out to be named at a later date, when contracts expire or when teams have a good idea where their season is heading. (is the team going to rebuild with youth or do they need that certain veteran player to round out their roster, etc.)
But trade talk is part of the NBA and certainly a part of the fan base….and some people, in here, think they need to police people’s opinions by implying that what they say as “truth” and not just an opinion like everyone else…….

If you feel you've lost faith in a player...
… than say so. Preferrably include an explaination for the loss of faith. Proposing trades to express your discontent is a weakkneed way of doing so. At least in my opinion.
Speaking of which, I usually make a point of identifying what I say as opinion, not “truth”. I certainly am not known as someone who trys to imply things (unless it includes words Dave won’t let me use). One of the nicknames I picked up along the way was D-9, as a description of my approach.

You are missing the point
people don’t owe you an explanation for what they say…..And even if it does not seem to make sense to you…(which there are tons of things in here that make little sense, for sure)…it’s not going to get you what you think it will…..you can’t stop people talking about trades…..you merely just have your point of view….and you know, that’s what makes the blogs what they are…nothing more than that.
I am an unimportant person in here…don’t pretend to be anything else. I don’t make it my mission to degrade people’s opinion whether there is validity or not…..
You have good opinions and draw logical conclusions, but your presentation of them is degrading and insulting ….it may lead to sidebars like this…and that has little interest for most people who are in here…..

Could be because I don't believe in the concept ...
… of being degraded.

while i don't believe we will trade Travis...
before the season starts, I do think at some point this season, or next he will be traded from the Blazers. I love Outlaw and his amazing plays, but I also see why he doesn’t fit this team as well as Webster or another potential player could. Outlaw is a one trick pony, it is a very good trick, and it can work over and over again, however the Blazers need more out of their SF position, especially their Starting SF if he is forced into that role. I have hoped, and continue to hope that Travis will improve defensively and offensively, and I am more than willing to give him more time this season to prove it. But he needs to improve quickly or I can’t see anything stopping KP from moving him to improve this team. Travis lacks the knowledge, strength, and corridination to be a great defensive player, and his offense many times breaks down the teams offensive system. While he is able to get his jumper off against almost anyone, it is a low precentage shot at best, add in his reluctance to take it strong to the hole, (where is athleticism would really shine) and we have a player that just doesn’t fit.
I hope travis improves, and I will cheer him loudly both at home and in the Garden when i can go, but I would not be suprise to see him trade before the deadline, or before next season, and I have a funny feeling the Blazers would be a better team if he was. :(

I think your perspective is spot on
Are you KP?……If your not, you probably think alike…..Time may be running out on Travis, but they will probably give him the chance to prove it one more time…..

No
KP would never stoop to hiding behind a barefoot hilbilly persona and besides I’m to old to be him and he is to wise to be me.

older is wiser….Don’t take that away, it’s all we have left…..My daughter just started listening to me a couple of years ago…so I concluded, she must now realize, that I am older and wiser….????…. well…..At least I qualified for older
I have to agree though, KP is a very wise young person….especially when it comes to basketball players ….glad he chose Portland …or did they choose him?

Travis stays.
4th quarter scorers win close games. We will have close games and TO will win some for us. I don’t think he saves it for the 4th quarter. I think his mind opens up. His mind understands the importance of what he is doing in the 4th quarter. He shoots better and plays better defence. He is a winner.
I could be wrong now. But I don't think so!

For your consideration
yes great teams find ways to win close games, but great teams do not rely on pulling rabbits out of hats as an M.O.
The point spread last year was too small. This needs to improve, or Hollinger’s irritating prediction will come to pass again. Last season Hollinger predicted PDX would not make the playoffs when PDX was 1st in the division, precisely because three were too many close games.
….I would love for Hollinger to eat crow this year (42 wins). I am not a fan of his total stats all the time B.S.
Unfortunately, for Travis, Ifall in the camp that feels Travis should probably be farther down the depth
