PROFESSIONAL ODEN PREDICTIONS/WHY PORTLAND RUNS WEST 08/09

Never have I seen a beast like Oden since 1993 O'neal

Oden is flushing everything. Like none other since Big Diesel. He makes Dwight Howard look like Bootney Farnsworth.

Although as Oden as a rookie has more power than Shaq had as a rookie this take is not about comparing Oden to Shaq... Oden will be more than Shaq. Oden has a nice inside touch and the baby hook will prove to be unstopable. What other right handed 7 foot center has knocked down freethrows with the left hand at 70 percent?

I'm looking forward to seeing him throwing down in the face of:

Bynum - scrawny lite work, bynum is going to get injured again

Chandler - Chandler thinks hes the boss in the west.. Always lookin salty.. Watch Chandler get ejected first Rose Garden game after getting GO-checked.

Ming - Ming's just going to piss himself when he sees Oden.

Martin - Old ganster has lost his heart. Won't get dunked on because he wont attempt to block any dunks.

Shaq - Shaq will play defense because he knows the spotlight will be on the Oden vs Shaq match up. Shaq will try to intimidate Oden and throw elbows huff and puff. Nate brings in Pryzbilla for some revenge/dirt work and Odens slides to PF.

K.G. - yap yap he talks so much trash he talks trash to himself. Oden is too big and too strong, is he mean enough, I dont know but I know nobody wants him in their face He matches up well with Boston and I hate Boston more than L.A.

I'm looking forward to watching encounters with Z-Bo, Wallace and a few others but these guys don't mean anything. They won't do anything. They won't  battle.

Oden is the baddest center in the NBA and this will be proven soon. Some may run the floor better or have a softer touch, but Oden is the baddest. He is the game changer. He changes the vibe of the team. Last year Pryzbilla (and jack) was the only guy who wanted to hang their balls out there and get in somebodys face if need be. Oden allows the blazers to push back.

Portland is two questions from a dynasty..

1. Oden can back anybody down but will he back down from somebody? (na I dont think but again Pryz needs to play the thug role)

2. Will Oden get injured again and turn into Arthritus Sabonis? (naaaaaaaa)

GO PORTLAND

No DHo comparison?

You made a formal comparison between Oden and all the other “elite” big men in the league, what about DHo, who is probably the BEST center in the league right now?

reference to Bootney Farnsworth

He compared him to Bootney Farnsworth.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

According to James Kunstler, who writes a well-respected if slightly profane financial blog whose title I cannot repeat here, "The Republicans must be clearly identified as the party that wrecked America... it's hard to imagine the American people giving the clean-up task to the very group that created the mess -- no matter how many cute little faces Sarah Palin can make on TV."

This is completely unrealistic.....

In no way is Oden going to dominate Yao or Dwight Howard. He doesn’t have an unstoppable baby hook either. He has been underwhelming and it’s about time people checked their expectations for this year.

by hobobob on Oct 14, 2008 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Ok, so maybe that wasn't a good repsonse

What I should have said was: Oden’s looked good so far. He’s out of shape (stamina wise), but still puts down 14 in 20 minutes. He said that hook will prove to be unstoppable, not now, but in the future. Whether he’s been underwhelming or not depends on what you expected.

Why should we check our expectations? Their ours with reasons. It’s a sport. The point is to get excited and somewhat ridiculous. I don’t care for realism in my distractions. Tends to bring me back to earth. I’m there so much as it is that I may begin to resent you for bringing me back.

I can appreciate your point

about the excitement that comes from harboring high expectations. That’s certainly one of the joys of being a fan.

So it’s cool so long as you can maintain that perspective. But when the lines between one’s entusiastic expectation and reality become blurred, that’s when the problems arise. Hobobob, you just know that if Oden isn’t averaging 15/10 with 2 blocks by Christmas, that much of that enthusiasm will have curdled into angry disappointment. That’s when you’ll start hearing the idiotic calls to the sports talk radio programs; seeing the “Oden is a Bust” fanposts on blogs such as this one; and maybe even hear the first smattering of boos in the Rose Garden stands. And almost all of it will be coming from those formerly enthusiastic fans who chose not to “check their expectations.”

Perhaps the healthiest outlook to take when evaluating the future prospects of a developing young talent like Oden is high expectations leavened with a healthy does of patience. I believe that Oden will be a great NBA center one day. But I also think the likelihood of that happening this year is fairly small.

Puhleeeeze

This is like a cheer, or something shonz would say when he’s fired up. sideline jeering. Don’t substitute your realities for someone else’s, clearly not intended -to-be statistically grounded, excitement.

I am always wary

trusting JR Rider about anything.

Word.

by joelor on Oct 14, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Oden doesn't have to worry about DHoward...

because Howard will be focused on not getting embarrased by Rudy (again and again). SInce Howard will be distracted by the mere presense of Rudy, Oden will slip under the radar (so to speak) .

by NWfan on Oct 14, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Oden is awesome, and we’ll all give him the benefit of the doubt, especially in his rookie campaign.

During one home game, I had no choice but to stand and shout “ODEN” when he grabbed an offensive rebound and slammed it in. Just yelled it. Also, Oden needs no nickname. ODEN

Also, the only blazers jersey I have is JR Rider, which is kind of awesome but sort of not. Its not one I’d want to wear to the Rose Garden, but I’ll wear it in summertime or if I’m in LA or NY, for sure. I think a Pryzbilla jersey would be pretty awesome. Or RUDY

I still have . . .

my homemade “Blue Lighter Rider” sign. Took it
to a game with another sign (for cover) and JR
grinned upon viewing. He really could “light it up”
in more than one way.

It's GO time !

I should have known

when the subject was in all-caps not to click here.

One question, where is the “professional Oden prediction” I was promised?

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

what happened to Blazers edge?

used to be a site full of intelligent conversations. now we just have unrealistic expectations (i will assume the OP is being sarcastic), knee jerk reactions to bad performances, and the level of homerism is starting to be off the scale.

by Philthyanimal on Oct 14, 2008 5:53 PM PDT reply actions

It's a side-effect of a higher readership.

Generally, the bigger the crowd, the lower the level of conversation becomes. Look at politics as the prime example. The two party system has effectively divided America into one of two crowds, each about half the population of our nation. As a result, dialog becomes limited to bumper-sticker slogans.

There are still snippets of good conversation around here. However, they are becoming farther and farther between. I no longer feel the need to read every post like I used to. Even if I myself am a homer with unrealistic expectations, I miss the good ol’ days.

I wise man (or was it a wise guy?) once said, “I’d rather host 20 people having the best Blazer conversation around than 20,000 with no regard for each other or the site.” We’re not there yet, thank goodness. But we’re closer than we were.

On the positive side, there are more Blazer fans now than there were then, and that can’t be a bad thing.

i agree

i used to read every post and every reply…now i just scan to see who posts them and then i read. last year it felt more like a tight knit community than it does now. granted we have had some great new additions as far as members go, but the conversations are starting to sink down to lower levels as a whole. Thank god we have dave who prevents it from getting as bad as a certain team sponsored forum.

Maybe SBN should add a favorites section

we could fill-in with the names of our favorite posters/commenters. Each morning I could see who on my list has posted or commented and read what he or she has written without having to wade through all the folks I’d prefer to avoid.

Or maybe SBN would let us start our own BE spinoff blog for approved BE veterans only. I would nominate amlmart to decide who gets in. Dave’s and Ben’s posts would automatically be forwarded to the new blog. Of course, that idea only works if I’m one of the invitees…

And exactly where else

are the doedoes like me able to cheer giddy like?

You don’t look like a grumpy old flatulence.

Please let those of us who know that in the end none of this really matters live it up! (thus my stooge reference).

Im just hoping.

He has his great moments in his rookie season. I dont think he will completely destroy all the C u mentioned but he should have his own against them too.
