Simple.

Shavlik produces, Ike doesn’t.

We had these two before and let them go

Ike Diogu < Zach Randolph
Shavlik =< McBob

We traded the first away for little and nobody wants the second.

We are three-deep at every position except shooting guard. Even though this is our most powerful position with Roy and Rudy, I say get someone young, cheap and athletic because they have both been injured BEFORE the season starts. Von Wafer if no one else

Webster and Bayless can play SG.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

by amlmart1 on Oct 13, 2008 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

On both ends?

I have heard doubts that Bayless can GUARD twos due to his size, which was why some thought he was a perfect fit with Brandon in the future. Two combo guards, one who could guard faster points and one who was best guarding twos—that was the projection that I heard from some.

As for Martell, I considered him as having the opposite problem—perhaps not quick enough laterally to guard some other twos and without the requisite ball-handling skills that Rudy and Roy have.

Question: When people bring up position possibilities, are they considering all aspects (offense, defense, transition) or just one (like ability to shoot the ball)?

Schonely got a raw deal. NO ONE gives Schonely a raw deal.

Career PER

Ike Diogu: 15.8,15.0,17.1
Shavlik Randolph: 12.6,15.2,15.1

Two preseason games does not mean more than multiple regular seasons.

Sounds like they both have comparable production with limited playing time throughout their career

The difference between Randolph and Diogu, and this is a BIG difference, is their urgency and hustle on the court. While Randolph’s contract is tenuous, you have to remember Diogu is in the last year of his contract. Playing time is important for him to obtain another contract somewhere. Randolph is laying it out on the court and Diogu is mucking around. One motor is running hard and the other is one is sputtering. The end of the bench guy isn’t about pure talent, it’s about their desire to compete.

My thoughts exactly.

Also from what I’ve seen, (which isn’t much, granted) is Randolph is the better defender. This may have something to do with Ike being undersized at PF, but I think it has more to do with Shavlik being more energetic in the hustle department.

Simpler

Ike is a proven Pac-10 college stud looking for an opportunity. Shavlik came out too early and has just been playing well in preseason. Ike is definitely better long-term.

by GUnit on Oct 13, 2008 1:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Shavlik showed he can hit an open jumpshot in a preseason game.

That said, the player who gets this spot is not going to be a go-to scorer. We need defense, rebounding, and hustle with the hope that this player almost never sees minutes.

Word.

Ike

Is a big body that can get boards and take up space. Shavlik is a flash in the pan right now, there is no way he is able to do anything at all. Either way, it doesn’t matter much.

I think he could become a capable scorer. So far, I can’t pick Shav because I haven’t seen enough from him.

Ike is a BRUISER!!

We need a true PF to come in on the bench, pound the glass, and make the paint a scary place to penetrate. Considering neither Aldridge, Frye nor Outlaw are physical PFs… we need to keep Ike if only for bruising purposes.

Regardless, Ike already has a spot on the roster. I’d keep Hill over Shav for the same reasons.

by jamon51 on Oct 13, 2008 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly.

Ike has been an under-sized, under-achieving, Lottery Bust with no hops, marginal D, slow foot speed dude that was drafted ahead of Frye for goodness sake. If your going to go with an under-sized 4 or 5, they had better make up for it with demonstratable hustle and desire to get in the block and bang and board like yo mama’s life depends on it.

People say he is an effective banger in the block. He was an effective banger years ago in the PAC 10, and people talk like that is now. I don’t see it. It’s a theory about his potential, based on his college career 4 and more years ago.

This is his contract year. He should be leaving no doubt in people’s minds that he has the desire to be a player in this league, by doing the things successful, under-sized (height) players do. In the games Ike got minutes so far this pre-season, Ike got 1 rebound in the SAC game, I think he got a 6 or so in the GSW game (good!), and 0 in 19 minutes yesterday. Repeat. zero rebounds in 19 minutes when the Blazers were playing 6 players down. This is the guy you want as an insurance policy?

The dude said in an interview on media day he wanted the green light to demonstrate his outside game, like he wanted his job to be to spread the floor or some fool thing like that. What? Dude. Paraphrasing a Sloan quote in the Salt Lake paper today, you have the green light to get in the block and bang, scrap for offensive rebounds and loose balls, and get your scoring that way.

Draft Express profiles Ike as a "still developing player " as a fourth year lottery pick. I have a hard time getting past that. I would rather give spots on the practice squad, which is where Ike is going to be when Martell comes back, to scrappy guys with low salaries that display a freaking desire to play in this league that have potential upside, i.e., Hill and Randolph.

Randolph has demonstrated that he can break the starting line-up on an NBA team in the regular season, and he wasn’t even drafted. He had an injury that could have been career ending, but he has obviously battled through that, and is now scraping for a spot again on an NBA team for minimum wage. At the first opportunity he got, he played like his mama’s life did depend on it. Reportedly he alos displays consistant high BBIQ in the practice sessions. Excellent. I want this guy on my practice squad and as as insurance at 2 positions (the 4 and the 5).

Ike wants us to rag on him. He said in the recent Hoop interview that it motivates him. OK Ike, I’ll take that on. I have a bias against undersized big men anyway, until said under-sized big men prove they make up for physical short-comings with Barkley-esque type desire to produce. Camp has a ways to go yet, and the question doesn’t have to be answered today. He has more time to prove he is worth it as a $3mil+ /year practice squad insurance guy.

In reality this is the 13-15 spots on the roster we are talking about . But that is what camp is all about when you invite 4 guys to get one spot. And if a NGC guy shines, start looking at your marginal contract players, and decide if some scrappy dude has more potential upside.

Camp has a ways to go yet. Ike has time to demonstrate we shouldn’t even be considering some un-drafted scrub to take his roster spot. See above how close the vote is. It shouldn’t be with Lottery Pick vs. Undrafted Walk-on.

Right On

That’s my problem with Ike; it’s been a long time since he was getting it done at ASU, and these days he doesn’t act or play like he has anything to prove. Sure, he’s had injuries at his previous stops in the league, but he also had windows of opportunity as well that he never took advantage of. Nobody ever seemed to miss him much when he left, either.

I’d love to see him turn the corner, but I can’t be having my “bruiser” PF playing soft and not getting rebounds. He’s shooting .412% through 4 games, which implies he hasn’t been relying on high-percentages shots. If none of these guys are liable to see the court anyways, might as well give the spot to someone who’s busting their hump every day trying to make this most of the opportunity.

He produces headaches when I think about him in a Blazers uniform. Shouldn’t he be playing for the Jazz or something? He seems like a Jazz sort of guy. I imagine him going around town with Okur giving people wedgies and throwing beer cans at freshmen.

I already pooped on Ike today, so I voted for sharp or pointed implement used as a weapon

When I pooped on Ike, I said that the trade to bring him to Portland was just a dump on Indiana’s part. Shavlik is intriguing to me. I don’t want to judge him on his preseason performance, simply because it is the preseason. I just like that he will always generate the comments that you grow sick of. I would enjoy witnessing the transformation, until I got sick of it.

I think this poll implies that Ike could just be cut, and the Blazers would add two of the free agents. I want Jackson because I like him, and want him to succeed. I want Hill just for another guy to get beat up on in practice, and he looks cool. If Shavlik actually is good, then I also want him.

This is like asking me what kind of toast I want with breakfast. I already had my coffee and ordered the protein and the starch. Actually, this is almost like having your choice of garnish.

Ingredients:

2 thick slices soft white bread

salt and pepper

Method:

Toast the thin slice to an even golden brown on both sides. Place it between the two thick slices and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serves 1.

Ike for 15th-Man!!!

Ike Diogu tore up the Pac-10 conference with his bullying body-up low-post style and that gives the Blazers an element they don’t have elsewhere on their roster. Shavlik has looked solid in preseason, but I believe Ike fills the hole that we have much better.

Portland already has rangy power-forwards in LaMarcus Aldridge and Channing Frye, Adding Diogu to that mix, rather than Shavik Randolph gives Nate for flexibility in exploiting match-ups. Plus, Diogu is tougher and has a chance to be a key reserve in certain post-season scenario’s.

Ike Diogu is our man.

Gimme an I, Gimme a K...

OK…you get my drift.

Randolph has been playing well of late, granted. But we already have a PF that does exactly what he does, only better (LA). Ike is not a PF scoring machine….at least not as a pro. What he brings is hustle, an ability and desire to lay wood on the opposition, and someone who is comfortable getting his points the old fashioned way (for a PF)……through rebounds and put backs.

That said, we are talking about the 12th or 13th roster spot here…..

I Like Ike

I Like Ike… not a ton, but it’s how it is. I just think its good to have a player like that on the roster. Lots of teams have one: Malik Rose, Brian Scalabrine, Darius Songaila, Melvin Ely, etc.

It’s kind of like a choice between Gary Trent (sans the terrific attitude, treatment of women and temper issues) or Viktor Khryapa: if either plays extended minutes, you’re in trouble. But if you already have several dudes who are Viktor Khryapa only a lot better (every major Blazer 3 and 4), and you don’t really have a big space-filler like Diogu, why not choose him for those moments when you need six fouls from a lane-filler?

Not really for basketball reasons, because I don’t think either will have too much impact, although I think Ike’s more likely. Mostly because Shavlik is a public homophobe. He’s either not smart enough to keep his mouth shut, or really doesn’t care about being intolerant.

But if it bothers you, write to the Blazer management and make a request to perform some sort of screen to see if he will be an embarassment in this way.

'Still not clear why...

…we’re given these two choices (I like the KP conspiracy theory from 92wastheyear).

But, if I must, I’ll go with Randolf. For the simple reason of fit. He has the fight of Rudy… the team-orientation of Roy and a dependable game on both ends of the court (like ???).

While this is based solely on pre-season performance, it’s all we really have to go on when evaluating fit.

Complete game or role player?

If you want someone who can score low and plays 6’10" on the offensive end, choose Ike. If you want someone with a more well-rounded game that includes defense, rebounding and passing, select Randolph. There’s a reason Utah consistently attacked Ike yesterday and that McMillan pulled him when Milsap abused him. To repeat the words of KP, the guy “can’t defend a table.” I’ll take Shavlik.

Really?

This poll and the fact that ppl are really giving Shav the nod over Ike after ONE great preseason performance simply boggles my mind beyond belief. I know it’s easy to be awestruck but Shav’s 9 for 9 in one game, but seriously, he won’t be asked to be a scorer and will never see that kind of shot-volume unless it’s via garbage put-backs.

For overall game and better lifetime resume up to this point… I like Ike.

by Blindsteepler on Oct 13, 2008 7:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

People don't just prefer Shav because he hit some shots

They like Shav because he hustles and plays decent defense, unlike Ike.

Really, scoring is the main area where where Ike is supposed to be better than Randolph. Randolph is a better defender, better passer, has a higher basketball IQ, and is arguably a better rebounder. Ike has more of a post offense and is likely to score more points than Shavlik, but Shavlik is better in almost every other area.

He has a uniform with his name on the back, a locker, cashes a check from The Trail Blazers, etc. Neither of them have ever played a regular season game as a Blazer. Ike has a guaranteed contract, which affords him some protection financially.
