In Garden observations from Jazz Game
1. On Greg:
He looked absolutely exhausted. Maybe seeing the game in person was a bit different or something, but the guy looked totally beat out there from the start of the game. Hopefully he will be ready to go 100% come the start of the regular season, but as of right now it doesn’t look like his conditioning is anywhere near ready considering the start of the season is a mere 2 weeks away.
Dicky B certainly wasn’t looking to do him any favors out there, and the Jazz were more than willing to rough him up. Had there been more scorers out there perhaps he would not have had such a difficult time out there.
No cause for alarm from this game, but he certainly looked like a rookie for the first time really this pre-season.
2. On Batman:
Batum was certainly the brightest spot of the night. He got lost a couple times on some switches and defensive assignments early but after that the kid played great. Excellent perimeter defense including a couple blocked jump shots, and he did everything the Blazers would ever want him to do on the offensive end. Hit open 3’s? Check. Finish on fast break opportunities? Check again.
If he can be consistent at playing anywhere near the level he played, and get better at communication on defense and more used to the NBA game than he will certainly be a rotation guy this year and depending how things go could really be “the guy” as early as next year. Both KP and Nate talk about wanting a guy to step up as a lockdown perimeter defender that’s able to hit open shots, and looks like Batman has the potential to fit that bill.
3. On Outlaw:
Really the 3’s were the only true bright spot to this game for Portland. Travis has been coming under a lot of flack and needed to have a good game. He went out and did just that (on both ends of the floor though his stats might not suggest it).
On offense I counted only two real forced shots, the rest were pretty in rhythm and his jumper certainly looked wet tonight. It was nice to see him catch and shoot a couple of them for a change as well. What was even nicer to see was him driving UNDER CONTROL and taking what the defense gave him. Lots of times it seems he drives because he thinks he should drive and kind of tries to bull his way to the basket…he’s not LeBron, he can’t do that. He also had a couple of nice dump-offs underneath but Greg bobbled away one and Joel the other (no surprise there). No assists, but hey he didn’t have any turnovers either.
On defense he needed to rebound better, but let’s not kid ourselves the whole team was extremely lackluster on the boards tonight. Utah is physical and the Blazers got pushed around a ton. On the plus side, he didn’t get lost on D much, and was providing some help defense. And he took a charge, got a couple steals, a block etc. He was not Batum out there but the effort was there tonight at least. Too often even the effort is lacking.
4. SERGIO
Sergio had a solid game that would have been really good except for his abysmal free-throw shooting. Considering who he had to distribute the ball to an 8 assist performance is not at all shabby. He had a couple bad turnovers but wasn’t completely out of control with the ball.
5 rebounds and 5 steals though is really nice to have from the PG. Additionally for the most part he played really solid D on Derron Williams (I think he’s decent right?) At one point in the early first quarter D-will had that little post up on him with the shot clock winding down and Sergio stayed right in front of him and was up in his grill contesting the shot.
Overall so far this pre-season Sergio has been pretty consistent. Both his defense and his outside shot look far better than they did last year and if he continues to play as he is I don’t see how he can’t be at least #2 on the PG depth chart. 20+ mpg would seem to be in order.
5. Jerryd Bayless
Looked bad…period.
Was nice to see something from him against Atlanta, but he did not look good at all versus the Jazz. His stats don’t look THAT horrible, but trust me on this. He did absolutely nothing to impress or indicate that he should be getting anything but mop-up minutes.
He’ll be good eventually consistently and will probably have a few good games this season, but he needs to let the game come to him. He’s just trying too hard right now it seems to me.
6. The Battle for 15
All the white guys looked horrible…Randolph had a couple little nifty moves but couldn’t finish tonight. Hill only played a minute, and Jackson wouldn’t even take his open shots for some reason. I guess he decided to use his blinding foot speed and athleticism to take it to the rack. It never worked out to well for him.
Well that’s it for that game. Now we just have to wait a week for another game. Hopefully it will be televised this time…

Nice... thanks for the recap
Was sort of expecting some of that from JQ but maybe he’s as tired of pre-season as Oden.
I’m interested in your comments about Oden’s conditioning. I was just thinking about Bayless and Oden and what others have been saying about the 81 game season and their first exposure to back-to-back games. I think this is where you’ve got to the give the edge at back-up PG to Surge and small forward to Webster/Outlaw/Rudy over Batum.
Just now, I think, are Roy and LMA getting used to the kinds of different gears to employ in order to make it through the season. We should realistically expect a similar sort of curve from Bayless and Batum and possibly Rudy.
Probably Surge too, if he ends up getting real minutes. I suppose playing 20min a game is a lot different from playing 10.

what about the black guy nonroster invitee?
You only mentioned the three white guys in the nonroster foursome. What about the black guy? Jamaal Tatum? Does he have a chance to make the roster?
Which of the four has the inside track, in your view? Or is KP just gonna leave the spot open?

Tatum
was in for a few minutes towards the end and really didn’t do anything that I noticed except look awfully small. I think his chance of making the roster is a minus, Hill also didn’t play much, but I assumed that was because the coaching staff knows pretty well what he can do.
KP said he was going to fill the 15th spot and my money is on Hill / Randolph. Jackson didn’t show anything that made me want to keep him.
It's time to retire Terry Porter's jersey. Please!

He had a interview before the game on 955
He sounded like he was ready to come out fired up and desperate to make this team. But he passed up all his shots and looked hesitant. Got blocked bout 3 times.

Trying too hard
he seemed to be trying so hard to score, even when he didn’t have good positioning on the play. So then he got blocked or otherwise turned the ball over.

Tatum
Does not have a shot to make this roster I don’t think…the Blazers have enough (some would even say too many) players at the pg slot and I have seen nothing from Tatum to indicate he would make the roster.

oh, and one other thing:
Why is Sergio having such a hard time with his free throws? Same question for Jerryd. Why are they struggling at the free throw line?
You would think that a guard who sinks hundreds of free throws in practice every week would be shooting around 90% at the line. These guys are hovering at around 40%. What is the deal? Are they just exhausted or something?
Speaking of free throws, how does Oden’s look? Does he have good form on his free throws?
The perfect is the enemy of the good.

Brandon had troubles on free throws last game he played as well – not sure what he shot last season but remember a few games he struggled – not much else to complain bout though for him.

Oden is shooting good from the line.
There will be no hack-an-Oden. If they force him to the line over and over he will make them pay. If he ever gets back into his highschool free throw shooting form you could expect high 70% from him, possibly peeking into 80% if he really gets it down.
As a team they are shooting BAD from the line, but Greg was at least looking good.

odens free throws looked pretty good.
I think he was 3 for 5 maybe? I’m not worried about Greg’s FT’s. He will get into nice rhythm once the regular season starts and he gets back into the routine of shooting FT’s in a real game on a nightly basis, so will the other players I think for that matter. He should be one of the better centers in the league as far as FT’s go.

Greg
Greis has really good form on his free throws, and they were falling for him, however…
He was LAZY LAZY LAZY on Sunday. We was jogging super slow and very non-chalant they entire game. He never fought for rebounds, and only put any amount of energy into anything after he received the ball in the post. And then he got stripped several times trying to back down his man. Where is the Monster Greg I was expecting?

Busy schedule and not in game shape.
To really get in shape for basketball the only way to do that is to play. Prior to training camp he hadn’t played for over a year, so it is going to take awhile for him to get his breathing and legs conditioned.

You're going to easy on him.
How long does it take to get in shape? He’s been playing for 2 months. Come on already. If he’s tired, then go all out for 3 minutes and come out of the game. I want to see him play hard. As it is he’ll get man handled in this league despite his size playing like he is. We can only make excuses for him for so long.
I expect more effort.

He's played 4 real games....
If you’re forced to not play for over a year, coming off a major injury and playing back to backs for the first time in your life you’re going to look slow and tired.
The only way to get in NBA shape after not playing basketball for a year is to play in NBA games.
And if course he’s going to drop the ball and get it stripped a few times. All rookies do this even if they’re an extremely high profile prospect.
It’s not fair to Greg to expect him to dominate right away, he needs conditioning. It isn’t making excuses for him it’s being realistic.

I agree with you that we can't expect him to dominate.
I’d like that certainly, but I can’t expect it. But I do expect more effort. You don’t get in game shape by playing in the NBA though, you get in shape before the season starts. He keeps talking about how he’s not in shape… so do something about it. I just really want to see more effort out there, like it’s something he wants and not just something he does.

Most players coming into the NBA year do so after playing a season before
or coming out of college/Europe where they spent the year playing basketball. Greg spent the year not playing basketball. What I said was meant as Greg having to play competitive basketball to be in shape for it. You can run and jog all you want but it’s not the same as playing in an actual game against NBA caliber players. Oden will get there just give him a little time.

Rehab schedule
The Blazer trainers have known for 12 months that October 30 is “the” target date for Oden to be NBA game ready
Greg has had no (published) setbacks with his knee (he did roll his ankle on day 1 of camp)
Oden has had no physical restrictions since mid-August, besides the ankle issue and 15-20 minutes played in NBA pre-season games. Greg has no reported illnesses (like Przybilla’s bronchitis, etc)
If GO is not in game shape yet, fans should be asking “why?”

How Important would be to Sergio playing +20 minutes per game to grow his confidence and really have an impact on the game.
I hope, at least, the first 15 games Nate gives him the opportunity to play +20 minutes so we will know eventually if he belongs to the NBA.

Greg has constantly looked tired
He hasn’t been running around that much and when the season begins, he’s still going to be tired. I don’t see him playing more than 20 minutes for a while because he just cant do it yet.
I’m wondering if he’ll ever be able to play more than 20 minutes for a game. The season is long, and if he’s puffing now, just wait until those road games! I think greg is the X factor for how we do this year. With him in, we’re killing. Without him we’re struggling. His conditioning will be a large part of what we’ll be able to do. the fact he’s still winded and we have 15 days left, leaves me concerned for this year. Not overly though. My expectations this year are simply to make the play-offs and figure out our team/thin the herd.
Next year, I expect a lot more. I expect a year where we DONT change the entire roster again. I expect Oden in shape and the rust to be gone. I expect a Western Conference title. That’s next year. This year I’m happy with the play-offs and I’m hoping we take on the toughest team so this team can see what the play-offs are all about.
We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

Greg, the Traveling Band
is it just me, and don’t get me wrong I love’s me some G.O., but doesn’t it look like he travels everytime he backs someone down?

Lots of post players do travel
…and lots of times it does look like people are traveling that aren’t as well. Good footwork and pivoting with big steps can often look like traveling even if it is not. Not saying that Greg is or is not constantly traveling, but it seems the only real times that traveling gets calle in the nba is if a player shot fakes and then doesn’t put the ball down right away before driving.

Even a famous rookie...
…will receive the rookie treatment from the officials. If he really were traveling he would be getting called on it. I think what some are seeing as traveling is actually a testament to his superior athleticism (a different category than conditioning). His footwork is so good he moves much better than most of the players his size we are used to seeing. It’s almost like it creates an optical illusion that he is traveling – he’s just that good (and really, REALLY tired).

Didn’t see the game. Got that from the box score.
Was the dude hanging out at the 3 point line or what?

Pre-season strategery?
I was fortunate enough to be given tickets to Sunday’s game.
(The exchange was done before the announcement was made that Roy and LMA were sitting out, BTW)
As soon as the starting lineups were announced, I knew it would be difficult for the TB to win, unless Utah was only going to play their main players for short minutes.
But Sloan was trying to win the game, much more than Nate
In retrospect, this reminded me of an NFL preseason game against a rival. NFL teams tend to run “vanilla” offensive and defensive sets during the pre-season that will not “tip their hand” to the opponent they will be facing during the championship season.
(If this was Nate’s strategy, I commend him for it. Utah is the Blazer’s biggest NW division rival, and the team that wins the division will be the #4 playoff seed, at least)
So why should Nate play his starters, and give Sloan a look at how best to attack them?
OTOH, Nate did play Oden. And he saw how Sloan sent the double and triple-team to harrass Greg when he was near the basket. This is a good teaching opportunity for the coaches that is now on tape, and will help them scout the Jazz’ tendencies during the regular season
