Today's game

Just got back from the game vs the Jazz.

First, a complaint.  I got the "Weekend Package" for a 1/4 season.  Of course, 41 games does not divide evenly by four, so the Blazers put in a pre-season game.  I'd like to know if anyone got a 1/4 season package and got all regular season games.  Also, I object to paying full-season prices when this is clearly not the same entertainment value.  Come on, Rudy, BRoy, and LA could've played and didn't?  If the team did that in the regular season, David Stern might have an investigation.  I understand why they didn't, I just would like to pay less for this watered-down product.  I'm going to talk to the team about it.

As for the game, Greg looked a bit slow out there tonight.  Teams are clearly going to send three to four guys at him when he's down low.  The refs seem content to let him shuffle a little as he bulls his way to the hoop AND to let defenders get some hacks in as well.  The half-hook needs some serious work.  He doesn't get his feet squared before taking it and his arm is coming from a different angle on each one he takes.

On defense, he swatted an Okur attempt at a flying layin and got Deron Williams on a reverse.  On two other occasions, Jazz players changed their minds about shooting when they got in the lane and saw #52 in the road.  He did get beat twice for layins by Okur and Boozer on spin moves.

Batum looks ready to play!  He gets his hands on a lot of balls and can get into his man without fear of being beat off the dribble.  He runs the break with composure and coolly knocked down a couple threes.  He reminds me of Scottie Pippen on the defensive end.

Jerryd (T-Rex?) did not look like a shoot-first point guard.  He looked like a shoot-only point guard.  He didn't initiate any offense except get his own shot.  Deron Williams did seem to be fired up about taking the ball right at him, which he did successfully.  #8 did not go that hard at Sergio.

The competition for the #14 spot (I'm calling Raef #15 with the injury) was clearly Randolph's based on tonight's game.  He was active and know when to make a move when he had the ball.  He didn't always finish, but looked knowledgeable.  LJ seemed too tentative and I don't think he can make enough threes to make the team.  Tatum didn't play until the last three minutes when the game was decided, so I thinkthat tells us all we need to know.

Come on back, Brandon, LaMarcus, and Rudy!

Tonight's game

was all about Batum. I was also at the game and the guy REALLY knocked my socks off. They have him down for 3 blocks but it was closer to 4 or 5 counting ones waived off due to fouls. He also must’ve tipped about 15 to 20 different rebounds and opportunities for steals, he got a hand on more balls then (content deleted for family friendliness)…

Also our team couldn’t seem to get Greg the ball in any kind of decent position. I also noticed Greg seemed to have issues with the pick and roll. He is clearly still knocking off the rust as the difference in his speed between different plays was huge. One time when he got the ball on the block he looked like the super quick athlete of a summer ago. At other times he reminded me more of Sabas in his lumbering days. All in all I’m not worried he just needs experience, conditioning and weight loss.

Sergio also looked really competent tonight. I almost feel it’s worth starting him a few games to see what he can do. Blake is #1 or #2 option at this point with Bayless being the clear 3rd guy off the bench. Bayless shows flashes of talent but often looks like he is over thinking plays, usually to get himself a shot.

All in all things were more then a little boring due to the lack of talent on our side of the floor. I also think we will OWN Utah when we get all our guys back.

I agree a lot with this post.

Batum was the man tonight. He is so much farther along than I imagined he would be. I figured the ‘10-’11 Batum to look more like this, not the ‘08-’09 one.

Greg and Bayless were both trying too hard tonight. They need to slow down and stop putting so much pressure on themselves, though it’s expected of rookies. Especially when facing players like Boozer and Deron. The bright side of Oden tonight was getting too the line and making his free throws. once again he was swarmed.

Sergio had a fantastic first half then kind of slowed down, but overall another good game for him. Outlaw was hitting his shot much better tonight.

The free throws were terrible, except for Greg he did a good job at the line.

The view from Sec 118

This game started out well as the UT starting five was right from the playoffs and we came back with:

Sergio
Jackson
TO
Shavlik
Oden

and we were only down a point after the first half and took a 3 pt lead into the lockerroom at half.

There was a section about halfway through the 3rd where the Jazz got out to a 5-6 pt lead and it pretty much went down hill from there and we were never able to mount any sort of sustained comeback after that point and the lead hovered around 10 pts +-4.

I too thought Oden did not have his best game but it seemed that UT would crowd the paint and throw everyone at him. Unfortunately, Rudy, Roy and Aldridge were not around him to open up the paint as much, so it seemed to slow him down quite a bit.

The good news is that he hit 4-6 FTs and got Okur into foul trouble pretty quick, in fact Fesenko, Milsap and Okur all had 4 fouls and a lot of that is due to Oden.

Segio looked good out there and had some good steals, although his shot was a bit off even though he did hit a nice 3. The best part is that he looks so much more confident and relaxed, in control of the game. Sometimes it is hard to see him as only a 21 year old, 3rd year PG but that is what he is.

Outlaw was back he looked strong and a bit more descisive this game, probably because he was not playing alongside Roy or LMA at the beginning of the game and he was able to get into his groove without thinking “Should I pass this to Roy or LMA?”

Diogu struggled as Ut is very good on the interior and being undersized, Diogu had a tough time getting his shot off consistently as evident by the fact taht he had as many TOs as fga’s.

Bayless had an up and down game. His shot was off and a few shots he missed badly. He was pounding the ball quite a bit and not next to Roy, Rudy or Sergio he did not look as effective. There were ties when the lineup was

Bayless
Jackson
Batum
Diogu
Pryzbilla

and there was bad ball movement all around which further amplified Bayless’ lack of PG skills at this point. I want to stress the “at this point” thing, but when Roy and Rudy are playing alongside him that problem should be nullified to a good degree.

The good news was that I made sure to watch him D against DW and I must disagree with set shot in the fact that I thought he did a good job overall staying in front of DW. DW only scored 9pts on 2-7 shooting and did not look as dynamic as he can and I was encouraged by Bayless’ play on DW.

Time will help Bayless and he will mature into a good player but PG is such a hard position to learn we can give him time.

But far and away the player that had the best game was Batum.
7-11 fg
2-2 3pt
3 reb
2 ast
2 stl
3 bs
16pts
??

THAT is just the type of stat line we need from our starting SF. His shot still looks like a work in progress and he can improve there, but everything else he has down. Kirilenko and Batum were matched up against each other a lot and Batum was at least even if not better than AK. His D and just overall hustle and being in the right place at the right time was impressive, all that stuff that does not show up on the stat line.

All of this from a 19 yo, very impressive. Now as with all young players, the question becomes, can he do this consistently? If he can we may be moving one of our SFs to find PT for him. We need him to work with John Townsend and if we can get him to better his 3pt shot to 37%+ we have a younger Tayshaun Prince for a mil/year.

KP must be smiling in what he has in Batum his BBIQ and athleticism are great for some one so young and he may be that final piece I wrote about here a while ago.

Final thoughts:

Yeah we lost by 13 but ut played all 5 of their starters and 2 of their best reserves against Shavlik, Batum and Luke and after the 1st Q only led by a point. Oden will foul out most of uts big men and Bayless can handle DW. My prediction is that we will win the series against the jazz again this year.

The season cannot get here soon enough.

I bought the quarter season weekend pack last year

I got the exact thing you got. 10 regular season games and 1 preseason game. That seems about right. I hope that you get the same luck that I got……four of my games were in December….right during the middle of The Streak!!! I had also picked up the Christmas night game ala carte, so I went to 5 games during The Streak……that was freakin’ awesome!!

I've decided to call Batum Tigger

He’s tall and skinny and bouncy.

by Section323 on Oct 12, 2008 7:07 PM PDT   0 recs

I call him Boom-Boom

cause it sounds cool….. Boom-Boom Batum!!

yes, Tigger is a terrible nic-name

but his play keeps reminding of it.
Mark Mason has taken to saying Batooom-shakalaka when Batum scores, even if it’s not a dunk.

I was definitely impressed by the kid

I get excited just watching him (not in Sophia’s way….but still). Hey they gave away pizza in my section (332) but I was full so I flipped them off (jus’ kidding).

Yes

1/4 season for me last year was 10 regular season games and 1 pre-season. I wasn’t even expecting the latter.

I could gripe this year – half season 20 games and 2 pre-season while the other half got 21 regular games and (I assume) 1 pre-season. But they have to divide it some way and I’m glad it wasn’t splitting the two tickets into 2 games…

And I’m certainly on the Batum bandwagon. I really like that kid. Keep it up, Nic!

It's time to retire Terry Porter's jersey. Please!

by jorga on Oct 12, 2008 8:03 PM PDT   0 recs

It's just pre-season

Pre-season is just slightly more representative of team and individual performance than summer league. You can get a basic idea about player’s skills and/or their health. It’s great that Sergio has improved his shooting form and appears more confident. Batum has significant raw skills. It’s been encouraging and fun watching Rudy. Bayless and Greg have a lot to learn, but apparently Greg’s knee isn’t hurting. Brandon seems fully recovered. Ok, that’s enough analysis from pre-season performance for me.

Everything changes on opening night. Right now the vets aren’t playing with 100% intensity and they aren’t trying to make the same offensive or defensive moves they will make in the regular season. There is usually at least one player (usually more) in the game at any moment that hasn’t got a clue what he is supposed to do on the floor and that regularly breaks down the team offense and team defense. The offensive sets are often new, incomplete, and poorly executed. Ditto for the defensive plans. The referees don’t call the game the same way either. There are some refs that won’t be there in regular season, and veteran refs have been told to emphasize certain calls in preseason that will magically disappear in the regular season. I could go on and on, but after 38 years of pre-season games I’ve learned that there is a reason the coaches don’t pick the All-Star teams after pre-season and only 82 games count toward the playoffs.

How Canzano reads this:

Batum…gets his hands on a lot of balls and can get into his man without fear of being beat off…he reminds me of Scottie Pippen.

by Devenex on Oct 12, 2008 9:03 PM PDT   0 recs

On a more serious note

Its great to hear Batum is playing so well already.

As for Greg shuffling, I don’t remember seeing that in the first two games, so hopefully this was been a result of Utah’s defense (slapping).

by Devenex on Oct 12, 2008 9:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Mmm

I think Batum has a legitimate shot at being my favorite play if he really is all that.

True that this is only preseason

so we should take Batum’s play with a grain of salt somewhat, but he was on AK-47 most of the night! He is a solid, talented forward that gives a lot of players problems. Especially when he is defending. Batum looked like he was handling Ivan Drago just fine, and even getting the better of him through long stretches. He is definitely the surprise player in my eyes. I think he will get major minutes in some games, and quite possibly crack the rotation for consistent minutes.

The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

As far as games go

this game really only counts as one-fourth of a game, does it not?

40/4 = 10 real games

1/4 = 1 preseason game

Or am I confused?

If they make you pay full price for the 1/4th of a game, that's lame

but if they’re giving you a discount off the face value, then it’s fair, imo.

My Quarter Season Package

Is all regular season games. It was the only one like this, and the only one that came with opening night. I guess I lucked out.

About last nights game, like everyone else I was highly impressed by Batum. I think he’s a better back up for Martell at this point already. Jerryd is still frustrating me. He needs to either learn to pass the ball or sit on the bench. Or, if he really really really has no one to pass the ball to, DRIVE IT IN to the freaking basket already. Serious. That’s why he had hundreds of free throw attempts in summer league. Oh, he keeps missing his free throws as well so maybe that’s not the best idea.

Umm…All in all, I was pretty darn impressed that we only lost by 13. We had almost everyone out of that game and UT was playing their normal starting unit and best guys off the bench pretty much the whole game (I thought Sloan wanted them to get rest???). I also think we will own UT this season.

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

Man I love him.

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.
