If Randolph continues to out-perform Diogu

sign Randolph, trade Diogu for draft picks (I don’t care how far out or how low), and then sign Hill.

Link for TV?

Is there anyway to check this game out online tonight?

Also, I’m getting pretty excited to see if Batum will be able to make the 12 man active roster to start the season. I’m having debates with myself as to whether or not I want him there. The D-League is the only way for him to get significant run, but I also don’t want to see his game style change in anyway.

by as11osu on Oct 12, 2008 8:42 AM PDT reply actions

Of course Nic will be in the 12 man active roster

Raef is out a long time. Martell is out a couple months. The only way Nic isn’t one of the top 12 is if Randolph, Hill, or Jackson is kept on the team AND passes him on the depth chart.

If Batum goes to D-League, it won’t be until after Martell is back.

AND, he’ll get some PT, too. Because we’ll have the occasional blowout win, so even if he isn’t in the rotation, he’ll play the last 5-6 minutes in the blowouts.

I'm inclined to agree

Batum is perhaps the biggest surprise so far of the preseason. Aside from decent defense, he mostly looked lost in summer league play and was close to an offensive zero. But he seems to have left his game jitters in Nevada and has played with composure and confidence up north. Does this show that he’s a fast learner? It’s too early to draw firm conclusions, but there have been times when he’s looked better than TO! He’s a pesky defender, doesn’t need to shoot when the ball touches his hands and from what I’ve been able to see so far, shows improving court awareness. He makes assists. At this stage, he won’t score baskets in bushels as Outlaw can, but perhaps he could already be better in spots where you want someone to focus on shutting down the other team’s small forward and don’t need to worry about getting points out of your own 3.

TO’s safe for now, but he needs to start looking over his shoulder. There’s a long-armed, hard-working, committed-to-developing-a-complete-game, young and hungry French guy waiting in the wings.

I actually agree with more of your political views than you think, I just really don’t very much like the way you express them sometimes. It’s not even that, so much. It’s that I think you actually make the other guys out to be worse than they really are, and that damages your credibility. There’s plenty to oppose there without stretching things.

And you’re not annoyed by me, you just don’t agree with me. I’m too wonderful and charming and obnoxious and arrogant (in a stupid sort of way) to be annoying. You don’t want to admit it, but you even laugh at some of my stupid jokes. It’s ok, don’t admit it, it will just be our little secret, right?

And most of your basketball analysis is really spot on. And you support the right team. And you didn’t like Darius. So, what’s not to like.

Just disproves the old theory about looks and brains being inversely proportional, I guess.

Always knew it wasn’t true, but then I married my wife. She’s always had the looks, but if she were smart, she would have done better than me. Maybe she just settled for me because she wanted someone who isn’t as smart as she is, I don’t know. It wasn’t for my looks, that’s for sure.

Love is blind, I guess.

If we can’t get any value for Ike in a trade, he may just be kept around as leverage in negotiations with Channing — “well, Channing, we like your game, but why should we extend you for $7 million a year to play 10 mpg when we can sign Ike for $2.5 million a year? Don’t you think you ought to settle for $5 million instead? We do think you are that much better than Ike….”

Actually, their money level is about the same.

Being the 8th and 9th picks in the same 2005 draft and all.

And extensions with either one would have to happen before Halloween, same as with MarWeb.
So negotiations can’t happen after “Channing is back and demonstrates he’s healthy and in condition again”, unfortunately.

Or, for that matter, until Martell is back.

It's highly unlikely Ike will get an extension this year

That being said, he fills a valuable role on the roster as a back to the basket player and that could be a reason why he stays. Totally different style than Frye or Randolph. Nate said he reminds him of a throwback player straight out of the 80s, and that’s what he likes about him. Randolph is like a slightly worse version Channing or a much worse version of LaMarcus. That’s nice to have, but not something different to change the pace/style of a game.

I'm talking about next year

They’ll likely neither one be extended this year. Next year, only one will be offered a new contract (unless there’s a trade during the season, of course). They are competing for the right to be backup forward on the championship teams.

If we can get something for Ike in a trade (after Channing comes back and shows his stuff), he might well go before the deadline. If not, and if both play reasonably well, the presence of Ike will allow KP to play hardball with Channing’s agent. In that scenario, look for Channing to agree a reasonable contract quickly at the very start of July, and for the rights to Ike to be renounced.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Ah, okay.

RFA negotiations next year.
Gotcha.

Although, I’ve been a big fan of Dave’s premise that any of these guys not extended now
is more likely than not to be traded this season, even if we do aim to re-acquire them in free agency,
if only to dump their cap-hold status during that free agency signing period.

"Mister Oden is a very, very big human being." - Jerryd Bayless

by QualityPie on Oct 12, 2008 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

It's possible

I still think Martell might be extended this month. I see Ike renounced, and Channing re-signed quickly next year, so his cap hold won’t be a problem. If Ike can actually earn some market value as far as trades, I could easily see him traded this year, but it just depends who/what becomes available.

You can’t just trade Ike for draft picks, you have to salary match.

Yeah - it's just an unexpected monkey wrench . . .

. . . that this last stretch of training camp and pre-season, our last opportunity
to get some performance evidence of where they’re at and what they’re worth,
Channing and Martell are both injured, and won’t really be back full-on
until after the extension deadline passes.

The timing just kinda sucks on that.

Bass, Powe, Maxiell, Maxsap...

The league is full of them—physical, talented, undersized fours off the bench. That type is useful in the regular season but becomes indispensable during the playoffs. KP knows the Blazers need at least one guy like that; Diogu is auditioning for that role. If he doesn’t pan out, I’m sure KP will try another candidate (or two) next season. But I doubt he’s ready to throw in the towel on Diogu so early.

would be nice to see Channing

Rudy and Martell are both out. That leaves us with Batum, Outlaw and Jackson available to play the 3, and Bayless and Roy at the 2. Rodriguez could play PG while Bayless plays SG and either Batum or Outlaw plays SF.

It would be nice if Frye was available to play a little at the 4 while Bayless and Batum/Outlaw are out there. Frye could also play a little at the 3 while LMA and Oden are on the floor. Missing Channing is a major bummer.

Missing Martell is major too. I hope his sensitive disposition isn’t tweaked by this period of forced inactivity.

Its a good idea to give them a look

They have a lot of roster questions with injuries and Outlaw….<sorry this guy just doesn’t make it IMO.
Diougu is a likely odd man out too, but injuries have changed things some for sure….I agree with some of the above….Free up some roster spots and take a gamble that Hill and Randolph will have more value in the long run…..It would be nice to get a veteran 3 as a mentor to Batum (He is the real deal and will only get better)
On Outlaw: I don’t hate him…I just don’t like his play (and the poor preseason just solidifies my opinion on him) His low BBIQ will prevent him from progressing or adjusting)…..We have players on this team that can shoot open jumpers…His value is sinking as fast as the stock market

Ok his value is sinking faster than the market in September

But it really wasn’t this preseason that soured me on him….it was, and has been his off season regression…..And I never liked his one dimensional game and lack of team play…So he did not have that far to go for me to think lowly of him….
He doesn’t understand that this team is looking to get better (and they have)….This might mean (for most players) that they need to work to get to the next level….does Outlaw expect to get better by the end of this season? Everyone else looked like they wanted to be at or near ready at the start of the season…Outlaw has cheated his team and himself and this makes people, like me, draw such a negative conclusion about his worth.

I am SO GLAD, since I share season tickets with a couple other people, that the one preseason game I had this year was the first. That was one of the best games ever.

yeah just a shocking sadness surrounding the Raiders

They were such a glorious franchise back in the day. Now they are just pathetic because of the unstable actions of Mr. Davis. That dude should just retire and play golf or something if he’s not too old yet. Gosh some people just don’t understand when it is appropriate to leave the limelight and let others run the show.

Firing Gruden was incredibly stupid. Jon got his revenge and the Raiders were never the same.

I think it's even more painful because the year after Gruden was let go, Gruden wins a title.

Now they suck and I cant bring myself to finding someone else.

Not really sure where you get that from what I said. Anyway I’ve been very high on Bayless and still am. That doesn’t mean I won’t notice when he’s trying too hard, and when I do that doesn’t mean I’m judging him as a player for rookie mistakes.

Utah Jazz

Seriously? You’re not NBA fans if you haven’t heard of Hot Rod Hundley. He’s the classic Jazz announcer. He’s “whack” because he’s probably piss drunk and he’s 95 years old. You gotta love it baby!

Anyway, the game can also be heard on http://www.thefansports.com/

True Blue Jazz did a little chat with Blazers Edge if you are interested

This Portland team is good. I can see them being the biggest Jazz rival in the Northwest this season.

Let’s hope nobody gets hurt on either side.

I am so fed up with NBA.com

The audio league pass sometimes works and their live scores pages are always buggy. It sometimes will update with an out of date score, then update with the correct score. And it keeps interrupting me with garbage popups that interrupt whatever I am doing about some error and garbage language that doesn’t make any sense. This is the National Basketball Association. Is it too much to ask for them to get these to work right? Who else is aggravated with this?

after tonight I don’t think anyone can doubt Batum. He is going to be huge in a couple of years and should be in the rotation this year.

I'd still take that lineup

Yeah Randolph was at the table reading to check in. So we got some beast low post scoring coming.

This game is over though. I never give up, but Nate is so I think it’s a sign I should.

Trout 21 minutes, Batum 31 minutes. For some reason the ESPN box score was behind.

I'm very disappointed in Bayless. For such a fearless guy he doesn't seem like it out there.

I know he’ll get better because he hates losing, just like Oden will get better but he should be using this time better out there.

During the post game interveiw Nate

Said Batum is definitely going to be a starter in this league and because of his defense he’s a rotation player right now. He came very close to saying that he’d start him before Travis. By his voice, you can tell Nate has a mancrush on Batum.

Batum was impressive.

I took som pics.. but because I was sitting so far away I had to use the super zoom so they turned out kind of grainy. Regardless, Nic looked awesome and he got some of the biggest applause of the night (besides Oden) .

I still think he’s hot, but I really am a fan of his game. He’s such a solid defender and I honestly think the defense of the rest of the team is elevated every time he’s on the floor. His offense is still not really that good. But he did seem to be playing with confidence and made some deep buckets. His shot is flat. I think he should be lifting his arms up more but hey, what do I know.

Jerryd was ALWAYS out of position. It was damn frustrating but I have to recognize that he is a rookie.. so thats his excuse, for now. (He obviously was channelling Jarret Jack today on offense… not a good idea ).

A youtube scouting video on Nic

says that he does not extend fully with his shooting arm, which would make his shot flatter than it should be.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
