Preseason Game 4 Open Thread
Here's your open thread for this afternoon's contest against Utah. Be sure and talk all about the Jazz, the Blazers, and the newly-blooming Steven Hill/Shavlik Randolph tug of war for that 15th spot...because, you know, 15th spots are critical.

If Randolph continues to out-perform Diogu
sign Randolph, trade Diogu for draft picks (I don’t care how far out or how low), and then sign Hill.

Is there anyway to check this game out online tonight?
Also, I’m getting pretty excited to see if Batum will be able to make the 12 man active roster to start the season. I’m having debates with myself as to whether or not I want him there. The D-League is the only way for him to get significant run, but I also don’t want to see his game style change in anyway.
by as11osu on Oct 12, 2008 8:42 AM PDT 0 recs
Of course Nic will be in the 12 man active roster
Raef is out a long time. Martell is out a couple months. The only way Nic isn’t one of the top 12 is if Randolph, Hill, or Jackson is kept on the team AND passes him on the depth chart.
If Batum goes to D-League, it won’t be until after Martell is back.
AND, he’ll get some PT, too. Because we’ll have the occasional blowout win, so even if he isn’t in the rotation, he’ll play the last 5-6 minutes in the blowouts.

I'm inclined to agree
Batum is perhaps the biggest surprise so far of the preseason. Aside from decent defense, he mostly looked lost in summer league play and was close to an offensive zero. But he seems to have left his game jitters in Nevada and has played with composure and confidence up north. Does this show that he’s a fast learner? It’s too early to draw firm conclusions, but there have been times when he’s looked better than TO! He’s a pesky defender, doesn’t need to shoot when the ball touches his hands and from what I’ve been able to see so far, shows improving court awareness. He makes assists. At this stage, he won’t score baskets in bushels as Outlaw can, but perhaps he could already be better in spots where you want someone to focus on shutting down the other team’s small forward and don’t need to worry about getting points out of your own 3.
TO’s safe for now, but he needs to start looking over his shoulder. There’s a long-armed, hard-working, committed-to-developing-a-complete-game, young and hungry French guy waiting in the wings.

everyone wishes they were like me. Only I, in all my glory, match up to my standards, of course.
What I liked about her statement was that she said someone who is obnoxious wants to be like me. That was a slam, that was. I’m deeply, deeply hurt.
And yet, it was a compliment, too. She’s saying that I even am good at being obnoxious. When I set my mind to do something, I do it well — even if it is just being obnoxious.
So I’m deeply hurt, and complimented, all at the same time. What a complex life I live.

LOL
I actually agree with more of your political views than you think, I just really don’t very much like the way you express them sometimes. It’s not even that, so much. It’s that I think you actually make the other guys out to be worse than they really are, and that damages your credibility. There’s plenty to oppose there without stretching things.
And you’re not annoyed by me, you just don’t agree with me. I’m too wonderful and charming and obnoxious and arrogant (in a stupid sort of way) to be annoying. You don’t want to admit it, but you even laugh at some of my stupid jokes. It’s ok, don’t admit it, it will just be our little secret, right?
And most of your basketball analysis is really spot on. And you support the right team. And you didn’t like Darius. So, what’s not to like.
When I was young (old geezer now, practically), girls weren’t supposed to know about basketball. Are you a guy?
Just disproves the old theory about looks and brains being inversely proportional, I guess.
Always knew it wasn’t true, but then I married my wife. She’s always had the looks, but if she were smart, she would have done better than me. Maybe she just settled for me because she wanted someone who isn’t as smart as she is, I don’t know. It wasn’t for my looks, that’s for sure.
Love is blind, I guess.

I haven’t even hit 100 posts yet. Which of my opinions on players or subjects do you find so objectionable? I know I’ve only recently been around here, but I’ve been posting on the Blazers for 4 years now on another board, and this team is essentially handpicked by me. 7 of our 8 first round picks in the last 3 years are guys I would’ve taken (before the picks were made *not Petteri). Trade and sign
Apparently Hill really likes the way Randolph signs autographs and a signature trade is awaiting NBA approval. Hill will owe Randolph cash considerations to make it balance out, but we could see them playing under each others name in the very near future.

Ike goes nowhere
until Channing is back and demonstrates he’s healthy and in condition again.
If we can’t get any value for Ike in a trade, he may just be kept around as leverage in negotiations with Channing — “well, Channing, we like your game, but why should we extend you for $7 million a year to play 10 mpg when we can sign Ike for $2.5 million a year? Don’t you think you ought to settle for $5 million instead? We do think you are that much better than Ike….”

Actually, their money level is about the same.
Being the 8th and 9th picks in the same 2005 draft and all.
And extensions with either one would have to happen before Halloween, same as with MarWeb.
So negotiations can’t happen after “Channing is back and demonstrates he’s healthy and in condition again”, unfortunately.
Or, for that matter, until Martell is back.

It's highly unlikely Ike will get an extension this year
That being said, he fills a valuable role on the roster as a back to the basket player and that could be a reason why he stays. Totally different style than Frye or Randolph. Nate said he reminds him of a throwback player straight out of the 80s, and that’s what he likes about him. Randolph is like a slightly worse version Channing or a much worse version of LaMarcus. That’s nice to have, but not something different to change the pace/style of a game.

I'm talking about next year
They’ll likely neither one be extended this year. Next year, only one will be offered a new contract (unless there’s a trade during the season, of course). They are competing for the right to be backup forward on the championship teams.
If we can get something for Ike in a trade (after Channing comes back and shows his stuff), he might well go before the deadline. If not, and if both play reasonably well, the presence of Ike will allow KP to play hardball with Channing’s agent. In that scenario, look for Channing to agree a reasonable contract quickly at the very start of July, and for the rights to Ike to be renounced.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Ah, okay.
RFA negotiations next year.
Gotcha.
Although, I’ve been a big fan of Dave’s premise that any of these guys not extended now
is more likely than not to be traded this season, even if we do aim to re-acquire them in free agency,
if only to dump their cap-hold status during that free agency signing period.

It's possible
I still think Martell might be extended this month. I see Ike renounced, and Channing re-signed quickly next year, so his cap hold won’t be a problem. If Ike can actually earn some market value as far as trades, I could easily see him traded this year, but it just depends who/what becomes available.
You can’t just trade Ike for draft picks, you have to salary match.

Bass, Powe, Maxiell, Maxsap...
The league is full of them—physical, talented, undersized fours off the bench. That type is useful in the regular season but becomes indispensable during the playoffs. KP knows the Blazers need at least one guy like that; Diogu is auditioning for that role. If he doesn’t pan out, I’m sure KP will try another candidate (or two) next season. But I doubt he’s ready to throw in the towel on Diogu so early.
Having said that, every time Ike gets the ball down low on offense, I groan, “Nothing good is going to come from this.”

My guess is that Sergio and Bayless will get a ton of burn, and so will the new guy, Shavlik. Oden will get his 20 minutes and Hill will get the lion’s share of backup center minutes.

Does anybody think Oden will lose it one day this season for being hacked and start a fight (or at least in his career)?
A la Shaq? Shaq vs. Barkley fight. Shaq vs. Brad Miller and Charles Oakley brawl. Or does this never happen because he is too calm, and too good of a free throw shooter to get mad about being hacked.

would be nice to see Channing
Rudy and Martell are both out. That leaves us with Batum, Outlaw and Jackson available to play the 3, and Bayless and Roy at the 2. Rodriguez could play PG while Bayless plays SG and either Batum or Outlaw plays SF.
It would be nice if Frye was available to play a little at the 4 while Bayless and Batum/Outlaw are out there. Frye could also play a little at the 3 while LMA and Oden are on the floor. Missing Channing is a major bummer.
Missing Martell is major too. I hope his sensitive disposition isn’t tweaked by this period of forced inactivity.
