Future injuries
I want to talk about these crazy little injuries and major injuries. Today Steve Blake went down with some kind of injury yesterday it was Oden with an ankle. LaFrentze had a surgery. Roy had a surgery about a month ago. Frye had some garbage removed from his body. Ike is kind of hurt. Joel broke his hand at the end of last season. And the big injury that happened to Oden a year ago. And bunch more injuries that happend during the season to our players last year. To me these injuries are gettin old, it kind of gets to me now. Im not that worried about these little injuries, but if they will happen to us with current speed and amount of players it can be hard to reach the playoff this season. What is reasonble amout of injuries a team can handle with out loosing it? I dont know but it seams that this year one of our big three can go down with a major injury. If they are only playing in pick up games and getting injured, that playing in a real game can be more dangerous. If the Blazers keep on missing a player here and there during the regular season I think it will be a little diappointing, cuz they wont mesh as well with changes that will be made all the time. What do you guys think will one of the Blazers go down with a big injury, or will it be just little injuries happening all the time to various players? Maybe from now on everybody will be healthy? Tell me what you think is going on with the Blazers? Im kind of have this image that the Blazers over worked them selves in the summer and now it kind of shows, and im a (not alot) little alarmed by the frequancy of the injuries that happen to the blazers, and I dont even want to think that some one from the team will go down big time during the season. Your thoughts and concerns?

Injuries are a problem for all teams
but your fanpost makes me wonder what the per-team average is and whether we exceed it.

Injuries can and will happen
It’s a pretty safe bet ti guarantee that some players will miss time this year, it’s exceedingly rare to have a healthy team all season. That’s ok. That’s why KP has tried to have backups at every position, so that we’ll have coverage unless there’s a huge injury bug.
I wouldn’t put too much stock in the recent injury reports. It’s a little bit of coincidental timing (Roy and Frye, Raef) and a little bit of the norm for preseason (Oden etc). If you read other team reports, preseason injuries happen all over the league. It just feels magnified right now.
I wouldn’t worry too much right now. If injuries happen, they happen. It’s all about the journey anyway.
On a separate topic, any chance you can work on separating your thoughts into a few paragraphs? The single-paragraph stream-of-consciousness style is a little hard to read (though it’s a perfectly reasonable topic to bring up!).
Thanks!

Also,
Injuries are unpredictable. If we spend all our time worrying about them happening and then dwelling on them when they do happen, it will be a miserable season for everyone.

Every team has them
We just freak out now because we had a major injury last season, to the guy we all had such high hopes of watching play. It wasn’t just a disappointment, it was a MAJOR disappointment.

In addition to that
1.) We’ve had bad luck in the past
2.) We’re a one team town
3.) Blazer news sells
4.) Digital age allows more information to flow
5.) Blazer nuts like us are checking for blazer news at least 8 hours out of the day and so the media obliges.
In other words, injuries that aren’t reported for other teams and that haven’t been reported in the past, are well known now. many times you won’t know other players are injured because they just play through it. We WILL have some players sit out some games, and that is natural.

Actually, our team was extraordinarily healthy last season after GO went down
Only James Jones was injured for a prolonged time period. Joel, Brandon and LA just missed a few games. The likelihood that more injuries than that might happen during the next season are one reason Hollinger “downgraded” his outlook on the Blazers a bit but still placed them 8th (see fanshots).
Something minor like an ankle sprain happens all the time in pro basketball. And all teams have injury problems one time or another. I can remember that last year Nowitzki and Duncan had what was considered severe ankle sprains, and that cost them like two weeks to come back. Bryant injured his pinky (and – more gravely – lost his center). Houston lost Yao half-way through. Denver lost Nene. And they all made it to the playoffs in a highly competitive Western Conference despite that.

These new Blazer unis should squish the injury bug

I don't even want to think about it.
I don’t want any more injury bug karma.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

what concerns me...
is that we have a constant injury problem on such a young team, how are these guys going to be holding up 5 years form now when we are in the thick of our presumed dynasty?

Try being a fan of the Oregon Ducks
which is what I am… Starting last year with the injury of Brian Paysinger on down to literally 4 or 5 torn ACL’s, later, through to this year, I am beside myself. Add the Blazer’s injuries to the mix and I am literally thinking that it’s me!! Maybe I’m jinxing my favorite teams! It’s crazy…

Now I have to wonder.
Did this have any effect at all?

One question: Does Greg really have significantly different-sized legs, or is that just a myth?
I think the first time I read about it was in a column by Bill Simmons.
It’s not like this story came out of the blue. Heading into the draft, there were concerns about Oden’s long-term physical health and the fact his legs were different sizes. After his predraft physical with Portland, rumors spread that the Blazers were concerned about his knees, followed by a round of stories that they weren’t concerned at all.
Greg’s Wikipedia article doesn’t mention it as far as I can see, neither does the discussion page for it. DraftExpress which is usually very thorough with any concerns about a future major player doesn’t have a word about it. Anybody has a primary source for this claim to prove or refute it?

I ain't got a link
But I coulda’ sworn KP had mentioned it pre or post draft, and said a simple insert in his shoes would make it not a problem. I don’t think it is a myth, like dry land. The only stupid thing about Simmons article is the “walks old” part. We’ve seen Oden move, how he walks, and it is normal. I’m sure at the ESPIES he had more of a strut, and Simmons (in an attempt to make himself feel better about losing the lottery after tanking) told himself it was an old man hobbled walk.
If that ain’t good enough for you, then I guess we just have to part ways, Norsktroll.

Thanks, it was also my level of knowledge that he had this issue but it's fairly easy to keep it in check.
I just don’t want to help spreading urban myths. Especially not when they lead to more “hey, he is injury prone” comments on the Interwebs. If somebody still finds a source it would be nice.

This seems pretty solid
It was in a SI.com article written by Ian Thomsen:
"We haven’t heard anything about his knee,‘’ said agent Bill Duffy, who represents Oden in association with Mike Conley Sr. "One thing we are aware of is that his hip alignment is off. One of his legs is longer than the other, but he’s obviously had that for a long time.’’
I’m pretty sure I remember some other stuff. They tried a shoe insert to make his legs the same length, but it threw off his gait and made his “good” knee sore. So they tried a slightly smaller insert, and that worked out ok. Unfortunately, I can’t easily find a link on this — maybe it was in a Quick chat or something.

Thanks, though that article doesn't have an encouraging tone citing so many things that could be wrong.
The same question about the legs was brought up today in the “Oden back at practice” article, so people seem curious and unsure about it.

My son has the same thing plus one foot a shoe size biger
We both have tried the shim up the short leg thing it seems that by the time you are a young adult you have learned to adjust your stride and I know what Greg is talking about it making your gate feel wrong.
