Junk (Oct. 1)
Just watched two games back to back.
First I put in the Gold medal game to see if my memory was correct. I shook my head as Rudy carried Spain for much of the game. Then I jumped up again when he dunked on Howard. I got that giddy feeling again.
Next I found the Summer league game against the Suns. Wow! Bayless was the best player out there and it wasn't close. That guy is just a monster. Maybe we should compare him to something dangerous and aggressive...Maybe like, I don't know...a T-Rex. Yeah, that's a good comparison!
I highly recommend replaying the games before the season starts.
I am so excited about these rookies. And I didn't even include Oden.

Every successful team needs a resident head-case
Bayless is ours. A very mild form since this franchise has proven they couldn’t handle the more severe forms (Miles, Wallace, Zach, …). But still he is the aberration, the itch. You need that to win big. LA had a whole collection headlined by Kobe. Boston has KG. San Antonio had Stephen Jackson when they won, and even Steve Kerr said that was a necessary evil.

parkinglotj you and I should be best friends we watch the same things
I too have been watching Rudy dominate (after not starting!) in the Gold Medal game, there was this one period of 30 seconds or so when he got a rebound, dished to Gasol for a dunk, then on the next possesion broke out in front of the pack for a 3 to bring Spain within 2 points! I have a Spanish broadcast version and the announcer’s are FREAKING out! “Just 6’5”, a skinny kid throws it down over the best player’s in the world!"
And the Bayless games were amazing, I got to try and track those DVD’s down.
Ducks Vs. USC, don’t count the ducks out, but I expect USC to come out and bruise with something to prove.

PF – Zach Randolph || Jermaine O’Neal
SF – Darius Miles || Jamal Mcgloire
SG – Bonzi Wells || Qyntel Woods
PG – Sebastian Telfair || Damon Stoudamire

Worst season simulation of all time! They have the Heat winning the East and having the best record. Philadelphia and washington not making the eastern playoffs, while Charlotte, Chicago, and Miami do! The thing about simulations is
that for them to be worthwhile, you need to simulate the thing multiple times to arrive at the expected result. This probably was a the result of a single simluated season and not the result of them simulating say 15 seasons and then posting the average results.

The thing that makes me angry
at Hollinger is his use of the age argument between the Jazz and the Blazers. The average age on the 2008-2009 Blazers is 23.9 , while the average age of the 2008-2009 Jazz is 24.9. Frankly, the only major difference is the Jazz have two 32-year-olds instead of one, but only one of them plays.
Yet, Hollinger has to say about the Blazers:
The thing people forget about last year is everything went right for the Blazers — most of their players played well above their career norms and nobody got hurt after Oden went out. Going forward, one can’t be quite as optimistic, especially given Roy’s repeated knee trouble and the fact Frye is already out.
While about the Jazz he says:
Additionally, they’re still on the upswing. Williams is 24, Boozer is 26, and every key player except Harpring is in his 20s. Okur and Korver are both likely to have better years than a season ago, but nobody except perhaps Harpring projects to sharply regress.
So basically, he seems to say that a good season by young Blazers players is “catching all the breaks,” while a good season by young Jazz players is “being on the upswing.”
I understand that we are adding new pieces which will result in growing pains, and that these new pieces are some of the most important to our team. But it seems like he is being hypocritical in the way he is viewing the success of young players.
Word.

The Jazz have playoff experience, we don't
Blake and Joel have a few games, but that’s almost nothing. The Jazz’ core went deep almost every year. I think that’s what he alludes to.

Umm...OK....
Playoff experience is great for the playoffs. But we have regular season experience.
Word.
by joelor on Oct 1, 2008 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was poorly worded
I can definitely understand how playoff experience will make a significant difference in the playoffs. But our guys got valuable experience in grinding out the long, 82-game season last year. So while I agree that the Jazz’s playoff experience will probably give them a nice edge in the playoffs, I don’t think it will give them that great of an advantage in a battle for the Northwest Division.
Word.
by joelor on Oct 1, 2008 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd say playoff experience does carry-over into the next regular season.
And it’s not like the Jazz were one-and-out in the playoffs. They’re battle-tested and have tasted success at a high level. It breeds confidence and refines your game, which makes you a better team in the regular season.
"Personally, I'd rather give an elephant a prostate exam on Chili Day." --Dave on rooting for the Lakers or Celtics

True
And as I said, I’m not necessarily denying the fact the Jazz may well be a better team than the Blazers this year.
It was more in the way that he portrayed each team’s outlook for the year (Quite positively for the Jazz, Negative Nancy for Portland) that rubbed me.
Word.
by joelor on Oct 1, 2008 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know man, I think Hollinger has the Jazz two or three spots too high (did I say that already in the fanshots?)
Yet I would believe his statement that the Jazz are more in their prime than the Blazers, even though technically they are not much older as a team.
If I look at their team photo above, I think “hey, individually we are better on three positions”. But as a team, they just function extremely well especially at home. They also made probably the best trade deadline acquisition that nobody talked about last year: Kyle Korver. Don’t laugh, I know he blows on defense, but his outside shooting and closing out of games with free throws was just what they needed and what Philly was dearly missing after letting him go.
We're young in age, but deep in experience - Brandon Roy.
by Norsktroll on Oct 1, 2008 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They did function extremely well at home.
But for that matter, so did we. As a younger team. Without a player whose incredible, instant impact has yet to be measured.
Sounds like its the old “cautious tempering of expectations” vs. “hopeful, yet thoughful optimism” argument.
Can we at least agree on hoping I’m right?
Word.
by joelor on Oct 1, 2008 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm cautiously optimistic
Going through the schedule, I had us winning 46 if I remember correctly, which I guess would be enough for being 8th or 7th in the West this year.
So Hollinger is not that far off from that, and I guess unlike The Committee of One (Marc Stein) he has crunched a lot of numbers how many wins you will need in the West to reach which spot. That he says the Blazers will be 8th AND Stein comes to the same prognosis by discussing it just with his own experience watching the NBA and doing these power rankings for years actually should be encouraging to us.
If Greg is (a rookie version of) David Robinson, Bayless is Gilbert Arenas and Rudy is Kevin Martin right out of the gate, more power and a better playoff spot to them. It’s just not that likely everyone will be amazing in the first year while all other guys perform on at least the same level as last year. As Dave and others are saying, adding 10 wins from 40 to 50 is even harder than from 30 to 40, which is what we achieved last year.

1 game?

I agree in the sense that
Hollinger seems to be docking us a few games from this season because he refuses to accept that the Blazers were a .500 team last season.
Oh well, who cares? I’m predicting 55 wins and I’m sticking with that bubble until reality pops it.

OT reply to (apparently OT discussion) in another thread
I still don’t get your point, actually. I had a roommate back in my university days who was Jewish. He and I called each other all kinds of names, and had so much fun with it. He would never have been offended by someone using certain terms. We had this private understanding that it wouldn’t be done in public, because people wouldn’t understand.
But if someone did it on a public forum (and this did happen), he was one of the first to speak up and say, "That’s offensive to Jews, you know." He wouldn’t have even been speaking for himself, personally. He would just have been saying that a lot of people in that group would find it offensive, and it’s better to not go there.
Do you think he was wrong to say, "That’s offensive to Jews"?
Do you think there should be any restrictions on offensive words? How about the N word? Do you think it is ok to use words that are offensive to religious groups, but not use words that are offensive to racial groups? If so, why?
I’m not trying to beat you up, I’m trying to get your point here. It doesn’t make sense to me. wrote:
The problem I have is not solely that the use of JC’s name as a swear word was questioned.
My main problem is that this was the interior monologue of a FICTIONAL character. If Ben had led a post with “J——- C——-!! Greg Oden hurt his ankle!!” Prez would be well within his rights to say, “Tone down the language, I find that offensive.”
But this wasn’t a case like that.
This was the fictional thinking of young man from a well-to-do Protestant background. And for such a character, the usage was appropriate (I have extensive experience with that group, having attended a well-off Episcopal parish, and having a father-in-law who is a retired Episcopal Dean, who uses the phrase on occasion as an explitive).
As for the N Word, or slurs against Jews or any other religious or racial group, no it isn’t okay. In the slightest.
I have never, and will never, use them. Ever (including if I had a roommate/ friend from one of those groups).
But, if I’m writing a character who is a WWII-era Nazi, HE might (and probably would) use them. And for someone to call me racist, or ask me to change the language, because of something my character (realistically) said is wrong. Very very wrong. And a danger to a free society.
And about using JC’s name in vain, it is upsetting to a (very vocal) minority of Christians, but is acceptable in all forms of media I’m aware of. Society has deemed it a mild oath, and so, right or wrong, that’s what it is in this country.
It is not a slur, it is not meant to intimidate or cow anyone, and so it should be left to society as a whole to determine appropriateness, not just a minor part of a portion of that society.
To use your Judaism analogy, this would be akin to saying something that was deemed offensive by a Hassidic Jew (and not many others) and having them respond, “We Jews find this offensive!” when really, it’s just Hassidic Jews who are offended.

Thanks for understanding my view
God is just so high and so holy, that even his name shouldn’t be used lightly. In Matthew 12:36 it says that we will be judged for every idle word and will have to give an account on judgement day for what we’ve said. So yeah, I think we definitely should avoid using God’s name carelessly.
As far as listening to someone else say it, I kinda’ try to be careful about that too.
Psa 119:63 says, “I am a companion of all those who fear You, And of those who keep Your precepts.”
At the very least, I don’t want to be with people who continue to blaspheme the name of God. Ultimately, the hope is that they would fear Him and keep His precepts.
But anyway, I apologize for generalizing a people group, some of whom don’t hold my view. Next time I’ll say I was offended. ;-)~
As for the other things, I think we both know the “sexist” thing was pure silliness. If Tom was really offended, I certainly would have apologized, but I think most of us knew I was just poking fun at a WRONG stereotype of women. Not at Tom or at his wife—-at the stereotype. Which, as far as that goes, you can poke fun at me, my family, my friends…but God is on a level a bazillion times higher than us, so I think that’s a wee bit different.
And as far as Ben goes, I appreciate that he was sensitive to the viewpoints of others. +1 for him.
He who laughs last thinks slowest.

I agree with you that we should avoid using God's name carelessly
And do not do so myself. I disagree that it is my place to judge others. That is between them and God. I do not insist (or even ask) that my friends and family share my religious views, to me that’s an intrusion.
I also have never hoped someone would “fear” God, and have that be a catalyst for a behavior change. I believe that personal morality, or living according to your personal code, should be the basis of decision-making, not the fear of retribution. Fear has no place in my relationship with God.
I DO however think of sexism, racism, etc as on an equal plane as sacrilege. I am just as unlikely to be guilty of one as any of the others, again because I apply my personal code of ethics, not because of fear of retribution from any source, be it secular or holy.
Again, I admire your strength of faith, but disagree with too much of the actual manifestation of that faith to find much common ground.

OK, I understand
I still think you are missing something.
If you use a character that is a WWII-era Nazi, he’s going to be a bad guy. He may use language that is offensive to Jews or blacks or homosexuals or Christians or whatever, but it won’t be portrayed as an ok (and in this case, kind of cool-funny) thing that he is doing. The use of offensive language would be a negative.
In the case in question, the use of offensive language was being portrayed in a cool, humorous way, something that would be generally admired. That’s actually quite different. It was written in a way to make us like the character, yet the character was using offensive language.
And I think if society as a whole determines what is appropriate, you stomp on minorities. The fact is, 40-50 years ago, society as a whole saw nothing wrong with the use of the N-word. It was because the minority was able to communicate to the society that they found it offensive that society’s view has changed. But I would suggest that anyone who knew that it was offensive to the minority but still used it was not responding appropriately, even if society as a whole still considered it acceptable.
As a side note, my Jewish roommate used the terms about other Jews. I told him that if so-and-so was a …., he was acting like a …. He accused me of being a coward, too afraid to call him that straight out and say that he actually was a …., so from then on I obliged him. He was a good guy, we had a lot of fun together. Good friends can do a lot of things that aren’t appropriate otherwise.

Thanks! I didn't know about the block quote
As for the other- I’m not sure about the “cool-funny” part. The only part that matters to me is whether it is accurate to the character or not. The Nazi may or may not be a bad guy, but he would still use what we see as inappropriate slurs. If a character is accurate, it should block the author from having to apologize for something he says. As I said before, for Jarryd’s demographic that is a realistic response. Whether he was meant to be likable is beside the point (and debatable, I didn’t particularly like Android Jerryd).
Just because Society approves of something, it doesn’t make it right, you’re correct. Unless, as I stated, it is not meant to demean, not meant as a slur (and don’t fool yourself, racial and religious slurs or even “nicknames” are very much meant to demean). Then it is up to society to decide where that line is. Since the majority of Americans identify as Christians, I don’t really see how Christians are analogous to blacks in the ’50s. In fact any comparison between the woes of the two kinda makes me cringe.
Really the entirety of my upset is due to the censorship angle. When a work of fiction is produced, the creator must be protected from any linking of his characters’ actions and thoughts to his own. It is dangerous to allow even a hint of surrender on this, because in the past this is the first step to outright censorship.

That would force us to censor some things. If there had been a Bedge back in the jailblazer days, I don’t think you would have wanted to read a story that speculated about EVERY thought of Ruben Patterson’s…complete and without censorship. Yikes! There is some stuff that simply doesn’t belong in print, especially on a family-friendly blog.

And that's fine
What surprised and bothered me was that you came across as if prezofdeath’s viewpoint wasn’t even worthy of expressing or consideration.
Your argument that a fictional portrayal is different from the person’s own opinion is a sound one, and you’ve made it in a well-reasoned manner here. I would still maintain that there’s a huge difference between sympathetic portrayals and antagonistic ones. Ben likes Jerryd, and wants us to like him, and this was a sympathetic portrayal even if it didn’t connect with you personally. I thought it was great.
But you know, no one actually was connecting Ben’s thoughts with Jerryd’s. The problem was not there. The problem was that Ben chose to use a sensitive expression to make a humorous point. Putting it in a fictional character’s mouth doesn’t really change that.
I would argue that if you were creating a serious work with a Nazi character who used inappropriate language, that would not necessarily cross a line. If you make him a negative character, there’s no problem there. If you make him a complex character, and his use of such language is portrayed in a negative or negative/neutral light, you’re probably ok. But if his use of things like the N word is portrayed in a positive light, or he’s a sympathetic character and there is nothing that condemns the use of that word, then you’ve crossed a line.
And if you use that word in a non-serious fictional work, and it is used to make a humorous point, then I very much think you’ve crossed a line. You are encouraging people to laugh at the expense of hurting others.
As to precisely where the line should be drawn, on this blog, given that Dave has established a no-swearing rule, the line should be drawn pretty tight — more tightly than is necessary in many contexts. This is supposed to be a kid-friendly, family-friendly, religious-friendly place (Dave’s a pastor, by the way, and probably doesn’t want things posted that would be detrimental to his real job).

Understood
We disagree on the freedom of the writer. The context simply cannot matter, not and keep the freedoms we profess to hold dear as a country.
You’re applying your moral standard to a fictional character in the case of the Nazi. You’re saying that the character must be bad, or realize the error of his ways, for it to be acceptable.
That is simply not the case. All in the Family had offensive language and a likable character who never learned his lesson. It was also done to be funny. I’m pretty sure no one accused Norman Lear of sharing any views of his character.
Bottom line- you may feel that there is a line at which a writer must be held accountable for the actions of his character. I even agree to a point. But that does not make it any less a basic freedom that must be protected, even if we don’t approve. That is the nature (and strength) of the United States.
But who knows- I’ve had a rough couple of days in non-BEdge land, and maybe I’m overreacting. Maybe not. Either way, I’m tired of defending what I always assumed were basic liberties, so I’m done.

OK, one more comment, just to clarify
That is simply not the case. All in the Family had offensive language and a likable character who never learned his lesson. It was also done to be funny. I’m pretty sure no one accused Norman Lear of sharing any views of his character.
1. This was a complex character. He used offensive language to be funny, but he was the butt of the jokes, primarily. While he was liked, he was made to look a fool for his behavior as well. The offensive language was never portrayed as a good thing, or as appropriate.
2. You are right, right, right that Norman Lear didn’t share the views of his character. We agree entirely. That’s actually not a point that anyone has tried to make in this case, though. I would suggest that the appropriateness/inappropriateness is not actually linked to whether the character’s views are shared by the author. We can both easily write inappropriate words that we don’t agree with. Putting them in the mouth of a fictional character does not necessarily make them appropriate.
3. I’m not talking about liberties here. Dave (and Ben within the constraints Dave applies) has the liberty to use any words he wants, with a few minor exceptions (libel laws, copyright violations, etc). Liberty and appropriateness are two different things. I’m right with you on liberty. The question of liberty isn’t really relevant to the question of appropriateness. So we’re on the same page there. The question here was never whether or not Ben had the right to use the words he did, but rather whether it was appropriate for him to do so. That’s a very different matter.
Anyway, thanks for the discussion, I understand where you are coming from a lot better now, and I’ve enjoyed it. I actually agree with you more than I thought I did.
