Roy game time decision tomorrow

Jason Quick reports that Brandon Roy's bruised tailbone might keep him out of the game against Utah tomorrow:

Star-divide

Roy has a badly bruised tailbone, the result of a hard fall Thursday after his driving layin was blocked by Ben Wallace in the final minute of regulation during the Blazers' 115-109 double-overtime victory at Chicago.

"My legs kind of ran into (Wallace's) and I landed smack on my butt,'' Roy said after the game. "And it just went downhill from there.''

After the fall, Roy's back began to tighten up, gradually hindering his game. Roy had a sweet and-one in the overtime, driving baseline after a spinning move off Kirk Hinrich and being fouled by Wallace while making the layin. But with his back tightening and aching, Roy deferred more and more, a direct contrast to the first four quarters, when Roy sliced-and-diced his way to 20 points and a career-high tying 11 assists.

I'm sure Brandon and the trainers will do what's best, but the way this team's been clicking, I see no reason to pressure the kid into playing if he needs a day off. Just another opportunity for someone to step up and have a great game.

absolutely. if brandon doesn't play, it'll be interesting to see who does. there will be about 38 minutes available for someone.

James Jones
I think JJ should start for Roy if he's unable to play.

What about Green?
I know he's supposed to go back to the Stampede soon but if he hasn't left yet he could suit up for the Blazers and play a few of those 38 minutes that Roy does not play.

I got to believe though that even though Roy may not start, he'll be suited up to go in if the Blazers need him.

at least
at least it is not his heel.

I know we should be cautious, but damn I want to see Utah lose tomorrow. Maybe someone could lend Roy a hemorrhoid pillow to sit on and some ben gay for his back.

The Wallace block...
was a foul, by the way.  The TNT announcers called it a "great block," but didn't show a replay.  I felt it was a foul initially, and when I rewound my DVR, that was confirmed--and then some.  Wallace jumped and crashed into Roy with the lower body--a very obvious foul.  Roy crashed to the floor and then slammed his hand down in apparent pain & frustration.  When I read about the Roy injury in the Friday Oregonian, I figured it had occurred on that play.

After that game
I really think Wallace defends with his "reputation" but not his skills. Roy was fouled hard.

2 fouls in 48 minutes
I have to agree with this line of thinking.  I remember him picking up his first foul late in the fourth (it might have even been OT) and shaking my head in disbelief.

He is such a physical player, it is hard to believe he escapes the whistle for that long.  He gets the benefit of the doubt because of reputation for sure.

Did he go straight up?
If he did then it is not a foul as the NBA has been trying to stop rewarding the offensive player for jumping into a defender.

I thought the most egregious foul call was when Channing got called for a charge when Wallace was clearly in the restricted area. There was no clarification on how Wallace got that call.

I would have to say I was pretty displeased with TNT not giving replays of questionable calls.

I remember that play
and Frye caught the ball in the paint and close enough to the restricted area that Wallace did not have to be outside it to draw a foul.  I call it the shaq rule, if you push a guy inside the restricted area and then recieve the ball, you cant just bull over your defender and draw a blocking foul simply based on restricted area rules.  The restricted area applys when players catch the ball outside the low block and move into the restricted area. Frye caught the ball just outside the restricted area, there was no way that wallace could get out the R-area due to Frye's positioning, but that doesnt mean frye can just plow through him and point to the R-area as an excuse for his blatant offensive foul.  Post players have to watch where they catch the ball, it matters....

I hope they rest the kid...
He has played a lot of minutes and I think it'd be a good test for this team to play without him.

I sense sometimes that other players--particularly Jack--get a little envious of the attention and minutes Roy demands. This will give them a chance to

  1. Step up or
  2. Show them how much they really do need Roy.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Roy in a suit, cheering his team on, and getting Surge, Green, and other players a true run against a very good team on their home court. After all, as Dave pointed out, this isn't a critical game. And everyone probably needs to loosen up after Chicago.

I dunno
Winning a season's series against the Jazz seems to me like a pretty big deal.  Especially after the Jazz shoved the Blazers around like they were little kids up in Salt Lake, breaking the streak.  Of course, if the Blazers were to beat the Jazz tonight without Roy, that would be huge.  And I wouldn't put anything past these Baby Blazers.  They're growing up fast.

We won a few without LMA
Winning one without B Roy would be huge as well. I think it's worth the gamble.

Besides, the victory wouldn't mean much if it weren't against a good team in somewhat important circumstances.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
