Fire Michael Holton

It's been a while since I've posted because I'm very busy with college, work and wife.  However, my only spare time goes to watching every Blazer game I can, and Michael Holton is ruining it for me.

Could this guy be any less intelligent?  Wow.  If anyone else has Comcast Sports Net and watches the halftime and postgame shows (which I now turn off because I can't stand the "color commentator") you know what I'm talking about.  This guy has a stupid grin on his face that never budges, spouts ridiculous one liners all the time, almost always gets the highlights wrong when he's talking about them (ie. saying someone took a charge when it was actually called a blocking foul), uses more cliche's than Bill Walton, and if I have to hear the two of them say "Tell 'em what they've won Michael... A Basketball Game!" even one more time I'll kick my TV.

This guy knows next to nothing about basketball, less about the Blazers, and can't go ten seconds without throwing a cheesy, stupid cliche out.  I am formally starting a petition to get him fired and put someone that knows something about basketball besides who won or lost on the show.  I would like a postgame show that I can stand watching.  Post a comment if you're with me.

I don't mind them too
much, but I agree about the "Tell em' what they've won" comment. I thought it was kind of funny the first time. But it got old REAL quick. I guess if we were losing more I'd hate them. But when we win, everything, even my patience for dorky TV guys is much better.

alternatives?
You raise a legit point, Earl, though I think you are too harsh on the fella. Mr. Holton can be described as having a certain measure of talent. He turns a phrase and breaks down a play without garbling everything the way Antonio Harvey does sometimes. So I cut him some slack. Both Holton and his cheeseball sidekick could be replaced with more seasoned and sober commentators, I'll admit that. I wouldn't complain.
Nature bats last.

Wha?
Holton has tried to avoid that running joke since the first week of the season.  I think its that Prompter Reading deadhead Tony (whatever) that should go.  Holton at least has the basketball background to offer some sort of relevant commentary to the conversation.

They should move Shonz to the halftime desk or maybe another Blazer guy that can have something original to offer.

Was Damon really a bad Blazer, or did he get the short end of the stick?

SERIOUSLY!!!
I can't believe they implanted these puppets into our pre/half/post shows.  Its like Comcast is intentionally trying to alienate the fan base!

All the while The Schonz, Mr. Rip City, is languishing in the depths of Standard TV & Appliance.  I really don't understand.  In the beginning I was willing to cut them some slack, after all this was obviously their first (or second) time being on camera.  Now at the passing of the first third of the season (Mark Stein has a report card with some nice things to say about the Blazers, Spec. Coach Mac, on ESPN.com) I was hoping to see some margin of improvement...none so far!  Actually, they are getting worse.  Partially due to the afore mentioned "What did they win...?" line and also to their lack of comfort in front of a camera (and the eye squinting shininess of Luftman's forehead).  Holton moves like an animatron with a guy backstage controlling his facial expressions with a joystick.  Even the tone of his voice is robotic, I mean don't these guys study tape of their performance and see the problems they need to fix?

Along with new commentators, they really need to update the set.  It looks like they are broadcasting the morning news at my high school.

Seriously, they can't throw a couple of free Chalupa coupons at The Schonz to get him back in action?  Rip City is back, we need to move past the rebuilding stage of our Broadcast team and prepare to win some rings.  I would personally be embarrassed if we won the Championship with these guys representing our team they way they are now.

I mean they can improve, but they need to loose the act, and act like themselves, get a decent make-up team (You think Sir Charles' dome doesn't shine like the sun pre-foundation?), a new set (see TNT for details), and more behind the scenes stuff.  Then they will be competing.

But I guess that is the problem, no competition in Monopolies!

I'm unsure about both of those guys, too
but I'm still working on liking Mike and Mike. I think in general that commentating is a lost art in America. I mean, Doug Collins was killing me last night. Why don't you just show everybody watching your Bulls undershirt, Doug?
Can you smell what the Pritch is cooking?

Coaching job
I think Collins is fishing for the recently vacated Chicago coaching job.

The plus side of
not being able to get Comcast, I guess. I'd gladly sit through innane blather if that meant I could see the game.

Definitely...
Also the fact that the post-game comments feel like they are explaining the game of basketball to the viewer. The only people who are watching the postgame are die-hard NBA fans, lets bring up some interesting topics, such as different defense adjustments and what exactly the opposing coaches were thinking, instead of just 'Jones did a good job because he got a block here'.

I would love to have Schonz back
but at the same time, would he really want to do it? Maybe he is enjoying the lighter work load he has now.
What bugs me most about Holton is  when Tony pitches him a topic, Holton will look straight into the camera and give his answer, instead of looking back and forth between the camera and Tony. It doesn't seem like a real conversation, just his scripted answers.
Like fisheyes mentioned above, I prefer Holton's diction over Antonio Harvey's garbling. The guy sounds like Porky Pig.
Also, in regards to the halftime show set, if you see it from different angles it is actually much bigger, like it was intended for a 4 person crew. Let's stick some more guys in there!
By the way, does anyone know where that halftime show is shot at? Is it inside the Rose Garden? The Blazer offices? Where?

not sure
i'm not sure where they shoot the show, but i have seen them both during the games walking in the lexus club level.  so i'll assume they are in the garden.

Really?
You guys don't like Holton?  The guy is unintentionally hilarious!

I almost lost it when he was analyzing Outlaw's dunk on Carney and said, "Candyman, droppin' treats on 'em"

C'mon! That's gold!

I had a sightly different reaction
I threw up a little in my mouth when he said that.

by ZigTic on Jan 4, 2008 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed
It's those types of sayings that make me want to strangle him.  Anyone could do what he does.  He says, "Look at Brandon Roy.  He's good, look what he just did.  He's pumpin' the gas baby."  ...  Are you kidding?  I want real analysis, not garbage that someone that knows nothing could spout.  And quit with the ridiculous sayings!  They don't even make sense!!!

Whoa - hold on here.
I am furious...how could there be so much hatred for Michael Holton?  As if Blazer games weren't entertaining in their own right, we get the best of both worlds with Holton's half-time/post-game extravaganza.

Holton doesn't have any basketball knowledge?  He has enough experience to garner knowledge - certainly moreso than many announcers out there:

College: In his UCLA career, Holton was captain his senior season (1983) under coach Larry Farmer; twice (1981-82) was awarded the J. D. Morgan Memorial Award for the outstanding team player; garnered the Bob "Ace" Calkins Memorial Trophy (1983) as team free throw champion (85.3) and the Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Trophy (1980) for outstanding first year player. He also earned Scholastic All-American honors.

NBA: Holton was a third-round draft pick of the Golden State Warriors. In all, he spent six years in the NBA with Phoenix (1984-85), Chicago (1985-86), where he was a teammate with Michael Jordan, Portland (1986-88) and Charlotte (1988-90). During his NBA career, he appeared in 325 games, averaging 6.2 points, 3.0 assists and 1.4 rebounds, while shooting 44.1 from the field and 80.7 from the foul line.  Are you telling me we're going to rag a former Blazer about announcing skills not meeting personal expectations?  Can't our energy be directed elsewhere?  Try kickboxing.

Holton also coached college basketball at University of Portland for 5 seasons - he's a fixture in the Pacific Northwest and he has an ARSENAL of witticisms!

At any rate - the aforementioned basketball experience surely gives him grounds for announcing and probably more knowledge of the game than many of us.

Let's be honest, TV personalities - namely sports commentators - carry a brand.  Peter Gammons, for example, is a no-nonsense baseball encyclopedia.  His commentary could take place at the circus and still offer hard-facts, indisputable knowledge with little personality and minimal flair.  That's all we want from him - we don't even care that he has a turkey gobbler hanging from his flacid face - it's just the facts we want.

Barkley is another guy to look at - has this man endured a lifetime of the sport?  Yes.  Can he break down statistics and hoops insight with the best of them?  Who knows.  TNT surely doesn't know, neither do the national viewers, because they tune in to listen to him talk about gambling, prep for racing referees, and more recently, lambasting the "dwarf community."

Holton's brand is delivered as "one liners with a smile."  And smile you should.  Next time you watch the half-time report, take a deep breath, relax in your chair, and exercise your ability to find joy in life.

Thanks, Michael.

by Earl on Jan 4, 2008 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

... With all that experience...
Shouldn't he try to at least use basketball terms?  There's a reason he coached University of Portland, no one else would give him the time of day.  I won't cheer for a guy just because he was once a Blazer.  He's not even cheesy funny, he's cheesy ridiculous.  He doesn't add anything to the show.  The other guy asks him a question and then he responds by not answering the question and instead spouting off some canned and rehearsed line that makes zero sense, or even worse trying to answer the question and showing that he doesn't know very much at all.

If he's hiding some great basketball knowledge then please please please share it with me.  If he's trying to sell his brand of commentating... I'm not buying.  He needs to change his brand and stop being so terribly fake.

nicely said:
We all agree the tell em what they won thing is old, but lets not completely rip apart our broadcasting team.  They arent competing for emmys here, they are just filling in the gaps of a basketball game, and doing a pretty good job...

Re: myemic23
I agree, myemic - filling the gaps rather nicely.  They are getting the job done, indeed.  For all the Holton haters, I'm sorry you feel this way.  But re-align your priorities, please.  Can you really be surprised that our announcers aren't the cream of the crop?  We can't even get supposed "non-biased" announcers on national television to give the Blazers any credit whatsoever, even after perhaps their grittiest win of the season.

Even if I weren't a Michael Holton fan (which I am, I mean I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue), replacing our announcing team is low on my wish list.

walton
honestly i thought bill walton was bad until i heard holton.

by Philthyanimal on Jan 4, 2008 5:44 PM PST reply actions

You know, I think that our standards are too low.
Some of us are excepting that Holton really isn't very good, but saything, "Oh well, were just the Blazers.  I guess that's the best we can get."  NO!  We're the freakin' Blazers!  We deserve the best!  Anyone who thinks differently I would ask where's your faith in our team?  I hold our team and town in high regard and think we could do better than someone who's never been on camera before and doesn't know how to be.

To clarify I don't have a problem with the other guy whos name I can't recall right now, and if Holton could buck up and start having conversations instead of trying to sound cool I'd be happy.  I just want good game analysis.  That's all I ask.

Am I asking too much?
