Gameday Open Thread: Cavaliers vs. Blazers

Whoooo!  The Golden Child of the NBA makes his only Portland appearance!  This guy is on another level from just about anyone else in the NBA.  Will Portland's team attack be enough to foil King James and the 'Bronettes?  (I know, I know Cavs fans...your team is better than that.  But it sounds good!)  More importantly will the Blazers come with a 48-minute attack tonight or will it be another multiple-personality performance?

Register all of your pre-game predictions, in-game comments, and post-game shucks and gollies right here!

P.S. The Jersey Contest form for this, the final game of January, is here.

Let's
Hope this game does not come down to the wire. As much as I love Roy. Don't want to have a clutch battle with King James. I am gong to say a prayer for LmA that he has his shot going for this game.

With Varejao out I don't see any reason we can't win this one.

LeBron will get 30+ but let's make sure the others don't go off on us.

Sweet
This game is on ESPN.  I get off at 4:00 PM HST and that is when the game starts.  If I catch the express bus, I should be here for the last three quarters.  I would love a Brandon Roy/Golden Child duel in the 4th quarter.  Almost like a game of horse.

Not worth a diary or jersey thread clutter
I'm about 40 points out of first in the Jersey contest and had every intention of analyzing the submitions of everyone above me so I could figure out what I had to do to have a chance at winning, but 5 of the 6 people that were well above me haven't posted their form yet!  And I can't do it tommorrow because I have to work late.

Darn their cunning counterintelligence strategy!

Hmm...
I may have to get up really early for this one.  Starts at 3 a.m. GMT.

5 on 1 should be easy for us, right?  No?

Maybe we can have our sixth man on the floor all the time.  That should help.

Yeah, that's it.  We used to play a box and one (four man zone, with one guy shadowing the other team's star everywhere, trying to deny him the ball, and the whole zone could help out when needed).

But if we put Travis on the floor with our starters, he could shadow Lebron everywhere, and we could play a 2-3 zone as well.  That should slow him down a little bit.  Or maybe we could try a box and 2?

Sure, I know there's this thing about the rules.  But if there can be a Bird exception in the salary cap, maybe there should be a Lebron exception for Cleveland road games.  Let him have his fun at home, but give the rest of us a chance when they travel.

Well, setting aside the impossibility of stopping him, I think we should be able to get a win here, but we better come ready to play all the way.

It's always hard to gauge how a team will play in their first few games without a key player who gets injured.  We went into Denver and absolutely crushed them without LMA.  Sometimes in these situations somebody else steps up his game so well, or the sub comes in and plays out of his head, and the team is actually stronger (for a game or two) without the injured player.

But I think it will hurt them, and we should get this one.

Since ESPN is picking up the game, AFN will be playing it.  I'll have to come to the office early to catch the 7am start time but I'll be there.  Yes, we've got a TV in the office.  Luckily since the Blazer games are rarely played.  My boss doesn't mind that I spend the morning watching the game instead of, you know, doing my job.

I'll be at the game....
....hoping we bring our A-game against Lebron and company. We'll need it against the Cavs, who have been on a royal tear lately.  With Varejao out the team should be able to attack inside the paint a lot easier than if he was on the floor. Let's all hope that Travis, Brandon, LaMarcus and Sergio all attack inside -- when they do, they are nearly unstoppable.

by Anthony Stine on Jan 30, 2008 6:43 AM PST reply actions

LeBron on Roy
After watching LeBron switch onto Kobe in the 4th quarter last night (holding him to one bucket), I think we can expect to see him cover Roy down the stretch tonight. The good news: the Blazers will surely be expecting that.  With Varejao (the type of rebounding forward who kills the Blazers) out, I like our chances.  But it won't be easy...

Predicting an easier-than-expected win
First off I'll admit up front I'm not a Cav believer.  Lebron is a great individual player and when the East is very weak, they can succeed.  But other than him, that's a freakin' weak roster - especially with Varejao out.

Cleveland is 8-2 in their last 10 games and they've got a few nice wins in there:  @ Toronto, @ San Antonio, Washington (another team I'm not buying into), and @ LA.  Although, this means before the 8-2 run, they were 16-17 and they'd lost to some pretty terrible teams (Milwaukee, NY, New Jersey, Charlotte)

Portland is 18-4 at home and Cleveland is 11-12 on the road.  The Blazers should be well-rested, well-prepared, and ready to go.  If there's fatigue or lack of effort tonight, there are no excuses.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 30, 2008 9:35 AM PST reply actions

There are always excuses.
It's the legitimacy of those excuses which is in question.

"We lost because Taurean Green had a hangnail."

"We lost because Eric Snow dropped 40 on us in the fourth quarter."

"We lost because we were showcasing Raef LaFrentz for a trade."

Would anybody throw Martell in that deal?

by Dave on Jan 30, 2008 6:10 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn't
I don't think Mortimer would, either.

I don't see why Martell and Travis can't co-exist. Travis fits perfectly off the bench.

Would be a 4th or 5th option on a team with Roy, LMA, and Oden.

by damir on Jan 30, 2008 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

That's exactly right
Some players are suited to it.  Some not.  Martell, in particular, is going to chafe in that role eventually.  Travis has the personality to do it but his best role may be as super-scorer.

by Dave on Jan 30, 2008 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that's the trick
Me, I love Martell but Outlaw has done more.  But yeah, you can't trust his BB-IQ and I think Martell's cieling is higher because of his potential BB-IQ... but who the hell knows.

I was down on Outlaw earlier because he showed up out of shape and making lotsa mistakes.  But as is always the case with Trout, you can't predict how he'll turn out and he's been awesome.

Awww geeeeez!

I'm not a fan.

But he did have a nice game last time out. He needs to change his way of thinking though, he is NOT Rasheed Wallace. He needs to start getting low and staying low and to give up on those mid-range jumpers. We've got lots of guys that can hit those, nobody to score close and rebound.

Oden is going to be freakishly amazing.  Trout can do some spectacular things.  But as far as night-in, night-out entertainment there will be a few teams in the league who provide more than Portland.

by Dave on Jan 30, 2008 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

Word word
With Oden, hoooooo doggies.  the Blazers will be the team every takes as their second team until we win too many championships and everyone starts hating us for being so good.

Dunks, 3's, drives, everything you could ask for in a NBA game next year.

by Mortimer on Jan 30, 2008 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

Not so sure about Oden...
Long term, you're probably right. Short term, it's going to take some time for him to find the range. He's going to be foul prone. How does he respond to frustration? We'll see. We know he dunks with authority and swats with the best of them, but he might be an 8-10 pt. guy.

by timbo on Jan 30, 2008 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know about other folks
but when I speak about Oden I'm always talking about the longer-term Oden...the one who is going to dominate.  He will have an adjustment period next year.  That's fine.  I couldn't care less about quick fixes.  Our eventual future is way too good for that.

by Dave on Jan 30, 2008 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

My absolute prediction:
Oden will have a better rookie year than Dwight Howard.  He'll be stronger, more refined, and on a better team.  He'll be foul prone, but will still play at least 30 mins a night.  He's not some mindless beast set loose on the court with no skill, he'll be good at first and great in the long run.

(I Hope)

by Mortimer on Jan 30, 2008 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

30 minutes?
wow... that's a daring prediction!

I believe he'll be good and this time off will help some... but man... 30 minutes?

Oden can do it.  Howard is still foul prone and has always managed 30+.

by Mortimer on Jan 30, 2008 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

Oden = 25 minutes, Pryz = 23
...and I don't want to see any more crappy small ball at all next year!!!

They also need to draft a real power forward that can give them 20 minutes also.

And Channing Frye can be sent to a happy home elsewhere. He's a good guy, but he doesn't have the temperment to muck it up with the big boys of the NBA. I want to see the Blazers able to put up a defense that will REFUSE to allow a driving guard or SF to make it to the rim alive.

by timbo on Jan 30, 2008 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

i think
that all thoughts should be about two - three years out.   That's our schedule (not including this year in that mix) and we should remember that.

We're not going to do crazy trades that don't help us after that time period because that's when we'll be dominating completely.

by timbo on Jan 30, 2008 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

The difference being...
Pryz can play 30+ minutes this year, every night. (if only Nate would figure out life...)

Whereas, Oden will have trouble staying in the game 25 minutes next year, due to foul issues.

I think Oden represents about 25% - 50% more offensive production than Pryz, guessing.

People treat Pryz like he's functionally retarded and assume Oden is the reincarnation of Wilt Chamberlin. In reality, they will probably be of similar order of magnitude, offensively, with Oden tending to overplay on defense and foul out relatively faster than Pryz.

First half was classic Lebron
When he gets to the rim and forces his way physically into the paint, he is great. But there is a reason his nickname is Lebron Ames.

No jumper whatsoever. That's why some people think his game will deteriorate once he gets older. Jordan was a slasher and driver in his early career - but he learned the jumpshot and post up move which expanded his game when he got older.

Lebron hasn't shown signs of that.

by damir on Jan 30, 2008 7:49 PM PST up reply actions

Nevertheless
he's scoring 30 per game on, what, 48% shooting this year? He's hitting the shots he's taking normally.

Cavs making a run.

Blazers miss AGAIN!!!  At least there was a foul though.

Outlaw hits first free throw.
Outlaw hits second.

Cavs passing to lebron until he finally ends up with a score.

68-61

Martel jump shot and cavs with ball again.

9 seconds.

James is fouled again.  5.4 seconds foul on outlaw.

James is shooting.  Hopefully he doesn't miss as blazers can't seem to grab those rebounds.

James misses first but hits second (thank god)

6 point game and quarter ends.

blazers had 12 point lead and then the blazers forgot they were playing a game where the ball has to go in the hole.

Hopefully they remember in the fourth.

Oden=2009 ROY

by berrygraham on Jan 30, 2008 8:41 PM PST reply actions

I wish Joel had been in there too
but it's unlikely he would have stopped that layup the way it developed.  LeBron just beat Roy too quickly off the dribble.  He was free.  It just would have been Joel jumping up where Lamarcus did.  LBJ used the rim to shield the ball and Joel couldn't have overcome that.

The Knicks are coming up Friday.

But how nice would it have been to have a nice winning streak going again?  Especially with how good everyone in the West is playing.  Tough loss, tough loss.  But don't get too down everyone, Lebron does this a lot I hear.  Our players lost this one, not the coaches.

by Mortimer on Jan 30, 2008 8:44 PM PST reply actions

Better:
LeBron WON this one rather than our players or coaches losing it.  This is King James we're talking about.  It's the 18th Cavs 4th-quarter comeback of the year.  And that's having played 40-odd games.  They do this every second night.

by Dave on Jan 30, 2008 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

I WON'T go with that...
No doubt LeBron won the game.

But it was yet another in an ongoing series of coaching blunders regarding low post play that set up the easy drive to the rim for the winning layup.

I am starting to theorize that point guards who coach might have certain aspects of a game masterfully under control but be fairly clueless in their low post decision-making. I'm trying to figure out why Nate does the same thing over and over and over again during crunch time. Does he not watch film? Does he not learn from his mistakes?

Just like Toronto, everybody in the arena knew what was coming. Everybody watching TV knew what was coming. A big thunderstorm was coming and Nate left the top down on the T-bird...

.............AGAIN!

by timbo on Jan 30, 2008 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

Bad D
Roy just did not play good D tonight after shutting down Joe Johnson the other night. LeBron was hitting his shots so Roy should have fought through the picks and trust his bigs, e.g. Pryzbilla to make the stop if he drives to the lane.

Too often it seems like Roy is lackadaisical when fighting off screens.

by crhsrunner on Jan 30, 2008 8:45 PM PST reply actions

Kept letting Lebron have the 3

by Mortimer on Jan 30, 2008 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Roy was fighting through
single and double screens.  The problem wasn't Roy, it was the screener's defender sagged rather than aggressively step out on LeBron.  They gambled he wouldn't hit the open 3 and lost.

first off
If you find yourself in the first 10 rows at the Rose Garden - DON'T TALK SMACK TO SUPERSTARS!!!

That said, LeBron just took over at the end and willed his team to victory.  Other than our final possession (where we waited too long to start the play and should have called a timeout on the rebound with 30 seconds left), for the most part we got good looks in the last 2 minutes, so it's hard to fault our guys there.

If we hit at a reasonable % tonight, we win this one before the 4th quarter even starts.  i thought we fought hard, played good Defense all night, rebounded pretty well, and short of a superstar going off in the last 4 minutes, we did everything we needed to do to win.  I'm mad and angry and frustrated with the loss, but I don't really feel like we gave this one away.

by theanomaly777 on Jan 30, 2008 8:55 PM PST reply actions

lebron made shots...but it wasn't difficult shots
he had 3 WIDE open three balls off simple screens....no bigs came to trap or show...roy didn't fight the screens or chase...it was like go ahead and shoot those open 3's

after the first two 3 balls, you'd think we try to defend the perimeter.

it seemed like we were passive and no sense of urgency in the 4th.

by blzrfan on Jan 30, 2008 8:56 PM PST reply actions

We got punked by LeBron
for the life of me, I don't understand why our defense didn't adjust. The screener's man never stepped up to stop LeBron...like what Cleveland was doing when Roy ran the pick and roll.  Next time we play, I hope we agressively double team LeBron and make someone else beat us and step out to help on screens.

by JasonT on Jan 30, 2008 8:57 PM PST reply actions

Got to get the ball out of the hot
shooters hand even if it means we have to double team.  Let somebody else beat us.  Thats all I was thinking about during that LBJ hot streak.

by theanomaly777 on Jan 30, 2008 9:00 PM PST reply actions

The last few minutes
I felt like in the last few minutes, to use the old sports cliche, they were playing not to lose.  The possession when we were up by one and we dribbled around the perimeter before roy jacked one up from almost 30 feet at the buzzer was simply awful.  We needed him to drive the lane, possibly draw a foul, and if nothing else have the ball tipped around a bit off a soft rebound to waste clock.  Instead we put the ball in LeBron's hands with 5 seconds left . . . and we all know how that worked out.

by sixth on Jan 30, 2008 9:01 PM PST reply actions

sportscenter
One other thing . . . after the game I turned to my friend and told him that the sportscenter highlights for this game would include the following: LeBron's dunk, his ankle, at least 2 of his late three's, his winning layup, the only "blazer" highlight the inbounds pass at the end, and then some analysts talking about how great lebron is.  Needless to say I could write scripts for sportscenter, just now that almost exact sequence of highlights makes up their reel for the game (no portland highlights).  I love east coast bias.

Martell was doing a good job
defending LeBron for most of the game.   I don't know if he would have been able to stop King James in the last 4 minutes when James really decided to turn it on.

I agree with Rice and posters here that Pryz should have been in at least for the the last Cleveland possession.

But second guessing is easy.   Our guys played hard the whole game.   This opponent is in the upper standings of the Eastern Conference and this close game shows the Blazers are competitive with most of the league.

by OrygunRod on Jan 30, 2008 9:11 PM PST reply actions

Eegh
Look at Dave's preview:

#  We're going to have major problems with LeBron but this would be a game to concentrate on him and dare other people to score no matter what that costs us.  I'll take my chances with any of the supporting cast before I'll let LeBron loose against single coverage.  Normally you'd say, "Well the star can't score all the points by himself so just shut down everybody else" but I really think LeBron could score them all.

Why was Steve Blake inbounding
I can't think of a single reason you'd have one of our shortest players throwing in the lob at the end of the game.  How was he supposed to get it around Z, who's a foot taller than him?  We'd diagrammed the play so it wasn't like he was going to get the ball back.

Also, LA did not step out on LeBron like he needed to when Roy couldn't get through screens.  It's a tough lesson to learn, but hopefully we'll learn in soon.

by bensonblazer on Jan 30, 2008 9:32 PM PST reply actions

Blake inbounded...
....because it was an alley oop play to the hoop and he (theoretically at least) has among the best control on a long precision throw like that.

It got picked off, game over.

The game was lost in the previous possession. I will never figure out why Nate underuses Pryz again and again and again.

The answer is simple:
The Blazers have hit the mid-season brick wall. Nothing more, nothing less. They'll recover. Keep in mind, Cleveland didn't beat the Trail Blazers -- Lebron James, scoring almost half of Cleveland's points, beat the Blazers.

Well I've reconciled myself to the increasingly ob

At least not this season.

It's hard to stomach watching some of that stuff.  There's no excuse to throw away games like that.  I'll still watch and support but it's time to face reality.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 30, 2008 10:47 PM PST reply actions

Still could be a playoff team...
....but KP needs to pull a bunny from his hat.

And Nate needs to figure out the concept of using a team consisting of 2 guards, a small forward, a power forward, and a center -- instead of 2 guards, 2 small forwards, and a 6'11" small forward that everyone inexplicably thinks is a power forward.

The tide turned when we went small at the end. There went the shot blocking and rebounding.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
