Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Bulls

We have not see-sawed between wins and losses all year, preferring vast streaks of winning or losing.  Will that pattern be broken tonight or will there be a new streak underway?  With all due respect to Minnesota last night's game didn't really show much about whether we were going to establish ourselves in the mix for the duration this season.  The thirteen games remaining in this month should give us some idea.  It starts tonight.

Talk with us here before, during, and after the game.

This is a tough game
The Bulls of today are not the Bulls of a week ago.  Their season may have completely turned around.  The talent is there.

This could be one of the toughest road games we'll face this year.

If we bring our game, and the old Bulls show up, we should get a solid win.  If the Bulls of last year show up, we might get beat by a better team.  No shame in that.

Pryz better bring it tonight, and either LMA or Frye need to hit the boards hard.  It would be nice to have at least a couple guys popping in some 3s, too.

That is what I was going to say
They are playing a lot better with a lot more energy without Skiles.

Guess it does count
nba.com fixed the error before I could post, but the original sentence on the front page said something like "Brandon Roy's Blazers look to start a new winning streak as they visit Luol Deng's Bulls...".   I was going to ask if one game doesn't constitute a streak.  I guess it does :-)

by jorga on Jan 3, 2008 10:14 AM PST reply actions

The Bulls aren't back just yet
They're 3-2 since Skiles was fired, 3-1 under Boylan.  Gordon is lighting it up again in the second unit.  CBS Sportsline says the Bulls are a 61-39% favorite at home.

http://sportsline.com/nba/gamecenter/preview/NBA_20080103_POR@CHI

That being said, I cannot believe the Bulls solved all their problems when Skiles left the team with John Paxson's footprint embossed on his fanny. Ben Wallace is still on the decline, and they still have no interior presence.  LaMarcus should be looking to have a big game.  They're playing better now, but they haven't much of a history of playing well this season.  I think they'll win if they can stay in front of the Blazers.  I think they'll crumble if the Blazers get a lead and hold it, which seems to be how the Blazers usually win their games.

by MiledAnimal on Jan 3, 2008 1:23 PM PST reply actions

Heads up scouting report.
Dave, in your preview you mentioned Tyrus Thomas but not Joakim Noah. Unfortunately (since the Bulls are morons) they've buried Thomas, but Noah had his best game of the year last night, and is likely the team's best option against Aldridge.

Hopefully they play him. Last night Ben Wallace played over 36 minutes so indications are that he returns to the sarcophogus during pregame. Joe Smith played 24 minutes, and he be old too. Thus far in the "so hot, he's" Boylan era, it's been the vets starting, and then Nocioni and Aaron Gray (yes, that's right) getting the first calls as reserve bigs. Noah's game (and it was only an aberration in the sense that he recieved minutes, he has the high-PER on the team) should've propelled him to be the first frontcourt reserve, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, watch for the lead that the Bulls spot an opponent every half because they insist on starting Chris Duhon. He's been an abomination since becoming a starter, and between him and Wallace they're playing about  3.5-on-5 on offense. If the Blazers can't capitalize on this gift, Ben Gordon will come in and make it rain. In theory.

Bulls need this game so bad, the 3 wins in the 'a watched pot is never' Boylan era have been against Milwaukee, Charlotte, and the Knicks. The hard-fought crusade back to mediocrity will get a big boost with a win over the Blazers.

In Chad Ford's chat today he talks about TT
He says he thinks TT has burned bridges in Chicago, even with Skiles out of the picture, and may be the centerpiece if a trade is made.

After last night's mediocre bounce back
I expect a large win by the Blazers tonight. One of our shortcomings has been interior D, but that will not be a problem against the bulls. If we can force Gordon and Deng to stay outside, this game will be over quick.
The Rose Garden is our House.

Worried.
To paraphrase any of the Star Wars movies, "I have a bad feeling about this."  I hope I'm wrong but I think we're going to be extremely lucky if we can squeak this one out.  I don't think we're going to have the hops that some expect tonight given the team's 2AM arrival time in Chicago.  On the plus side, the Bulls are also in the second half of a back to back, so let's hope they are tired, too.

by DonkeyShins on Jan 3, 2008 3:50 PM PST reply actions

WTB Rebounds!
Also let's put the 12 million dollar man in and use up some of those hard fouls, eh?!

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 3, 2008 4:00 PM PST reply actions

Call me crazy
But I think we match up like gangbusters with this team.  They don't really have someone to stop Roy, and Wallace obviously isn't the same defensive presence as he used to be-- not that Roy has had problems with shot blocking centers, what with his ability to score with both hands.

Wallace and prolly Tyrus Thomas are both stronger than LMA (not saying a lot, but still), but not too strong to push him off the block.  And when he gets the ball, he's got a good half foot on them arm-length wise.  I'd be surprised if Aldridge doesn't come out big tonight to show everyone who runs or follows the Bulls that LMA is #1 in the Universe.  I'm sure LMA is happy with what team he's on now, but being spurned is good motivation.

Let Gordon shoot deep, go right at the surprisingly slow Deng, and allow Nocioni to take himself out of the game with whining.  And hope Hinrich doesn't find his former self as well.

Everyone knows they don't have great inside presence(s), but the Bulls are good rebounders and could obviously hurt us there (us sucking at rebounding and all).  Plus, they could definately find their shots tonight playing at home on TNT... or shrivel under the bright lights.  We could do both also, but so far we've played well in our national games.

The Bulls have traditionally been a jumpshooting team who capitalizes on turnovers in the open court and takes jumpers in the halfcourt-- and all of their key jumpshooters have been pretty cold with especially bad play coming from Hinrich.

We don't force turnovers like the Bulls did/do, but we certainly live by our jumpers this season.  Luckily, we got a lot of shooters to go to if someone is cold, but it's still not a reliable approach to winning most of your games.  The Bulls seem like they are experiencing that this season, and really have been hurt by having zero low post scorers (who knew, the pundits and average NBA fan were right for once).  We aren't the best down low, but LMA can score down there and should try his dangdest to get position on the smaller defenders, doubly so if the rim gets tight and we can't hit a jumper.

Also, Roy and Jack's great penetration ability is another way to get points if our jumpers don't fall.  The Bulls just don't have as many options when the jumpers aren't falling.

So here's to hoping we vary our attack and keep the shots falling.  The Bulls aren't as bad as their season record at ALL, but they also aren't as good as their 3-1 record under the new coach.  Again, this goes both ways, as they can say we aren't a 13-in-a-row team really either.  But I think us Blazer fans know which is REALLY true... (wink)

I don't think Pritchard will make the same mistakes Paxson has with the cap space and young pieces he's gathered, but just like the Wolves are the Blazers in 2004 the Bulls are us in 2009 after some wrong draft choices and a bad big time free agent signing.

The Bulls will likely play better than they have been, but I don't see how they're gonna be better than a 40-something win team for a while.  They'll make the playoffs, so no lottery picks, and they are chained to Wallace and his contract for a long time.  I really like Deng, but he hasn't made the jump I expected yet.

That said, they do have great young pieces that can turn into draft picks or more veteran help.  I am not sure who would really help or who is available to be traded that wouldn't hurt the team overall.

I thought they'd be better this season like most people did, but more the low 50-win variety.  They don't need to make many changes to get there in the still-weak East, but if they wanna go further than that I dunno... I should also note I am not a Bulls expert, so I could be way off.

If the Blazers play how they have played for the last month, I think we got a good shot.

As far as where we end up this year.  If we end up around .500 for our record during January, THEN I'll start thinking we got a shot.  This is obviously a big game as far as that goes, and should be a great one.

by ssa400 on Jan 3, 2008 6:07 PM PST reply actions

When we miss
what saves us is low turnovers, hard rebounding, and active feet on defense.  So far we have maybe one and a half of those things.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 6:08 PM PST up reply actions

Timeout
We need an energy drink or two at the half.  I don't suppose "Red Bull" would be appropriate tonight but maybe a Java Monster or something.

a movie about telemarketers getting ruthlessly slaughtered?  I'd pay to see that.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 6:32 PM PST reply actions

Near the end of the second quarter
Lamarcus was in at center while Trout played PF.  I wasn't paying attention whether Lamarcus was still in when Frye was in.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 6:33 PM PST reply actions

I wonder...
what the tone is like in the locker room right now?!  Man, the first half was ugly, but I expect a much more aggressive and urgent second half.  Go Blazers!

They keep playing that "Rock Me Gently" Jeep Liberty commercial.  The one where the animals hop in the sunroof and sing.

At the beginning it says, "Professional Driver on Closed Course."  So the point is...uhhh...don't try to drive down a regular road getting animals to jump in your car and sing 70's hits with you?

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:04 PM PST reply actions

WOW WOW
How did Travis get that call?

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:05 PM PST reply actions

Frye was all about

Ben Wallace shooting
anything but a dunk is good.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:07 PM PST reply actions

Man
How do five Blazers in the area not get that rebound?

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:07 PM PST reply actions

Yeah
We played NBA Live defense there.  It looked like whoever was controlling Travis hit the "jump" button at the wrong time.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:19 PM PST reply actions

I couldn't tell

I retract the prior statement
Looking at the box score, I realize that Super Trout shot 50% from the field.  I don't know how I missed that.  Perhaps he was doing it in the guise of mild-mannered Travis (Bo, Charles?) Outlaw.

by Dave on Jan 3, 2008 7:35 PM PST reply actions

LMA...
LMA just couldn't stop Joe Smith from moving him out of position for the rebound on the Wallace FT miss. He needs to bulk up a bit, but that will come with age.

by Tuggers on Jan 3, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

Roy rebound
after it went thru TO's hands.   You can see where Travis needs to develop.   He needs stronger hands.   Does he need glasses to be able to grab the ball or just a mcuh stronger grip?

He is still young and will get better.   The future is bright.

what was the play call there?
hold onto it until 5 seconds (good) then take it into a double team while everyone else just stands around and shoot a contested fade away jump shot. i feel like we can get a better shot than that.

We get him the ball on the perimeter instead of the low post. He can't score against Ben down there, let him hit the J he's hit like 5 straight.

Strong win
had lots of opportunity to pack it on the road down 15 halfway through the third, and then again several times over when we kept giving them 2nd and 3rd chances late in the fourth and both OTs.  but we kept pushing and pulled it out.  Signs of a veteran team.

Very solid road win against a team that is much better than their record.

Portland had 8TO by halftime. They only had 2TO the rest of the game. Wow.

by damir on Jan 3, 2008 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

Reminds me
of a game the Blazers had against the Chicago Bulls in Portland when Chicago led by 4 with 13 seconds to go and Chicago was shooting 2 free throws.   They missed the free throws and Portland quickly went to the basket and scored 2 (this was before the 3 point shot).   The Bulls took a time out and then inbounded at half court and Hollins stole the ball passed to Twardzik who scored.   Again Chicago took time out, inbounded at half court, another steal and another lay up and the Memorial Coliseum went wild as the Blazers won by 2.   The Coliseum was so wild and  intense you would have thought that it was the 7th game of the NBA Finals!

by OrygunRod on Jan 3, 2008 8:42 PM PST reply actions

I finally caught up
I had to pause the game a few times on me DVR and just finished it a lil' bit ago... WHOAZERS.  Awesome game.  The Bulls needed that win sooo much more than us and we still gutted it out.

Them were some tired looking legs.  This confirms something I had been suspecting since the streak started: It's good luck if I am watching the game on DVR as opposed to live TV.  We haven't lost yet when that happens to me.

We have won when I watched it live as well, but that's not always possible so I gotta make it lucky.  It's complicated.

What is that, 20 wins?  With about 50 left?  49?  Sheezus Kristos.
