The Blazers "Voice": Poll
I was listening to the begining of a game last week. Bill Schonely introduced Brian Wheeler as the voice of the Trailblazers before the telecast began.
Really?
When I think of the Blazers, Wheeler's voice is not first to come to mind.
Let me say that I do like "Wheels", but I don't know that he gets my vote.
I almost put Dave as a choice, but I thought he'd win in a landslide in here.

It physically pained me to not pick Schonely
Since I don't live in Oregon and it seems like 2/3 of the games I do get to see are another team's broadcast, I went with KP. He's not "the voice of the Trailblazers" in the same sense that Schonely was, but he is in the "he speaks for the organization" sense. Unfortunately, that's as good as I can get.
Who honestly doesn't pick Schonely?
The reason: it was him and his personality that brought the Blazers into people's homes. In the early years, he sold the premise of the team to the state of Oregon. When people tuned in to he game, they did so to listen to Schonely. I like Wheeler as much as the next guy, but people aren't racing to their radios to hear him, they want to hear the team.

ehh...
I guess what I'm saying is that he was definitely the voice of the Blazers, but he never had the opportunity to get completely entrenched with me. It was simply a great first time and 1998 is starting to feel like a pretty long time ago.
Go easy on them
In ten years, there will be people who don't know about Michael Jordan. In fifty years, there will be people who ask, "Who was tominhawaii?" That's just the way life is.
To be honest
Can someone tell my why only dictators and broadcasters get to keep their jobs way past their prime?

I picked Brian
The Schonz
Wheels and Rice (who earned his stripes with Bill) have gotten pretty good, but to me, there is, and will always be, only one Voice of the Trailblazers. I have only one Trailblazer autograph, and that is from The Schonz ("RRRRrrrip City!").

If you had the opportunity...
I live out of market right now, yet every time I have a chance to listen to the game online, and I hear that gong and Schonz's "the following is a presentation of Blazer broadcasting" I get chills. Schonely was the best.

I did the whole TV and radio at the same time bit
I imagine there's a whole generation of 15 year old Blazer fans that have never heard a single Schonz game live, if at all.
This is easy...
That makes Wheeler the current radio "Voice" of The Blazers.
To me if I have to pick a eternal Voice of The Blazers, It's going to be Shonley. He was the voice I grew up with, he was the personality most often invited into my home through the radio. He is obviously no longer "working" as the current voice of The Blazers but his echo will always be heard at least by my generation.
I think it's just terminology. Wheeler is the current "radio" voice, but when I think of the franchise as a whole and who/what represents them the most right now, if I had to pick one person, or one entity it would probably be KP. At the core he seems to be orchestrating the most directly what The Blazers are becoming. We are rising as a team though, so a single person is hard to credit. McMillan, KP, Brandon, the all are facets and faces of this new Blazer incarnation.
MIKE RICE
Then it would probably be Wheels.
I never really listened to Schonz growing up.
I love the Schonz...
Heck, I love the fact that he is so excitable. The fact that he goes nuts on the air shows me just how passionate he is about the Blazers. Corny? Maybe, but I think he rocks the air waves.
