Devin Harris to portland??

Chris Brousard just reported on nba coast to coast that portland is indeed involved in the jason kidd talk, but as a third party.  He said the talk was about Stackhouse going to NJ, Harris coming here, and Kidd going to dallas.  This is a trade that makes sense for portland, depending on who we give up...

Any thoughts???

very interesting...
Harris is a really nice player.  He's a good fit if we are serious about running.  If we aren't giving up Outlaw or any of the big 3 it would be something you'd have to at least consider.

Ooh
I like Devin Harris.  Without looking at what he makes or anything, I think he'd fit in well.  He's super fast and has great experience playing on a really good team.  He's not a bad shooter and he can defend well also.

Like everyone else will say, it all depends on who we give up!  But he's young, fits the time frame, isn't a dominant ball handler, super fast, and looks kinda nerdy.  Why not?

Although, for NJ not to get him I'd have to imagine we're giving up something nice.  But if it's "just" Jack (who I like a lot), I guess you'd have to.  Hell, throw in a 2nd rounder too.

Window Closing
I'm not saying this is the case because I don't have the pulse of the Mavs down cold, but Cuban and Donny Jr might be thinking their window for winning a championship is closing very soon and losing Harris (a good PG, but not a guy you build around.  A good piece) for Kidd might be more than worth it.

I could easily see Harris being moved for Kidd, but I don't know what we'd give up to get Harris that benefits NJ and makes it so they don't want him.  Perhaps NJ wants to go right into rebuilding, but I don't know how this could be accomplished with Carter's massive contract just beginning this season.

Like I said, I ain't sure.  I think Kidd would do really well on the Mavs, and Dirk isn't getting any younger.  Harris is worth it.

2 cents
If Roy, LMA, Outlaw and Oden aren't touched (which they obviously won't be), I think we have to look real hard at this deal. I don't know the money Harris commands and when he needs to be re-upped, but I think he's a stud. Completely unafraid to get in the lane, which would be tremendous for the boys when the fall in love with the jump shot. He also can be a one-man fast break.

The talking heads mentioned that part of it is contingent on how fast Harris gets healthy; since the Blazers are in the playoff hunt, they don't want to take on a hurt point guard. If he's healthy, though, I am tempted to do it.

by samuelleejackson on Jan 29, 2008 6:51 PM PST reply actions

Roy likes and needs to play at a slow pace.
I don't see a Harris/ Roy backcourt as being one that is complementary. Plus, Roy is doing more and more of the ball handling.

Let's keep what we have and maybe re-evaluate around the trade deadline in 09 after we see how Rudy and Oden blend in.

We'll see if anything comes of it.
But it sure would be a surprise to John Hollinger. He seems to think that Harris is already better for the Mavericks than Kidd.
I'm not stubborn, just obstinate

But Stan McNeil and a couple other 'execs' think it's good.

Intriguing
I don't know much about Harris, but he seems like a good fit that could really fit our needs.  It makes sense for Dallas too, where win now is the operative strategy.

For it to work for NJ, I'm thinking we would have to toss in our first rounder, along with Jack, if that is indeed the trade.

by OregonDuckworth on Jan 29, 2008 7:04 PM PST reply actions

I forget where I read it
but Mark Cuban sent a response to a local sportswriter, who had asked if the Mavericks were really pursuing Kidd.  Cuban opened the response with "Are you on crack?", meaning no, we don't want to break things up to get Kidd.  Sure there are smokescreens and chatter put up, but if this trade rumor is true, I get the feeling it is more NJ trying to find a third partner than Dallas being a willing one at this point.  Cuban didn't go after Kobe, so I don't see him waiting until mid-season to break up his roster for an older star.

What was the trade, specifically?  I had thought it was the deal in general, since they would have to give up too big a piece (Dirk is still in his prime, with Howard and Harris coming into theirs; the only real important piece who is older is Stackhouse, and you can get guys like that in their twilight in their quest for a ring).

BS
Dallas isn't trading Harris and even if they were I don't see how we're the ones that snag him when New Jersey is the one trading a all-star caliber player.

As Mark would say step away from your crack dealer.

love it but don't believe in a word of it
Devin would be an almost perfect fit.
He's not a great shooter, but has all-NBA level defense and is great on the fast break + he's  young.
Give them Webster + Rodriguez +pick  and I'd still do it.

by Bruno on Jan 29, 2008 8:23 PM PST reply actions

whoa whoa whao
WHOA! I would like to see Devin Harris in a blazer uniform. No way would I give up on the potential of Sergio, Webster and a draft pick (which with an overloaded roster and a GM as talented as ours we could really do some damage) for him. Enough of that kind of talk. Cool your guns.

by einman77 on Jan 29, 2008 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

Where do you come up with this stuff?
Perhaps you should check your stats first.  Harris FG% is over 48%.  He's not a great 3 pt shooter (35%), but 48% from the field over all is pretty good.

As for trading Webster, Sergio and picks to get him - I don't think so.

by timg56 on Jan 30, 2008 7:37 AM PST up reply actions

Devin Harris is hurt.
They say it is an ankle bone bruise...out two or three weeks.  How does that figure in?

by Kampeska on Jan 29, 2008 8:37 PM PST reply actions

If KP gets this done...
This would be by far his best move yet. I'm guessing to entice the Nets to go through with this he would have to give up Jarrett Jack + both 2nd round picks or 1st round pick + Josh Mcroberts or Petteri Kopenen or Joel Freeland. If aquired Devin would probably work with the 2nd unit, which plays faster, and devin's ability to drive would open up many open shots for James Jones/Outlaw. I don't think he would often be on the floor with Broy.

The Nets are said to want
a good young player, an expiring contract, draft picks and cash.

by Kampeska on Jan 29, 2008 9:01 PM PST reply actions

A key point
Don't forget that Dallas is no longer a running team.  They are the 6th slowest team in the NBA and yet Harris fits nicely with them.  Harris has the ability to get some easy baskets but he also can play in a halfcourt system.  I agree he might not be a great fit with Roy since they both like to have the ball in the halfcourt.  Still, you'd have to do it if you didn't have to give up to much.  Harris is too gifted not to grab if you have the chance.

BUT as has been mentioned, I can't really see it happening.

How about
Kopenen and 1 2nd round draft pick

JJ1

Expiring contract. If we can get rid of Miles then KP is a wizard, or Raef if not.

We have to start dropping points, and Kopenen might have some trade value. He probably won't ever make it onto our squad unless we start giving up a lot of point guards some other way, so why hold on to him? Harris would make me very happy. Losing a future project would upset me greatly, especially Sergio or Webster. Besides, I see no Finnish Blazer fans learning English on this site, that has to make El Mago much more valuable than Kopenen. No Trout, no Oden, no Roy, no LMA, no Sergio, no Webster and I would say yes. Honestly I don't think all of our projects will be something great. I don't know which ones will, but if we hang on to them until we do know we won't have to kick ourselves in the future for letting them go. However we do have too many extras not to get something going, this would seem like one of the best people we could add on in the entire league and if we could drop a couple of point guards to clear up the traffic jam, a pick we can't use and a contract we want to get rid of for a pickup like this, that would be unbeleivable.

by einman77 on Jan 29, 2008 10:24 PM PST reply actions

You can't get the salaries to work
unless you throw in Raef, since Kidd makes a ton. I don't see NJ wanting Raef.

by Blazerholic on Jan 29, 2008 10:43 PM PST reply actions

Could you see them taking Raef
for a chance to rebuild? I'm not sure what their intentions are other than that if we were involved in trade talks with them in the first place. Raef and a bunch of stock in the future seems reasonable to me. I hate trade diaries normally, but seriously this one is a great one. I'm pulling for something to happen, I think Harris is one of the few guys who could really help us build a solid future while giving us a better team in the present.

That thing is a nightmare. I can't believe you played with it until you hit pay dirt. I did manage to switch the Buffet for Webber. That would be a bit better in my opinion. A whole lot of goodness doesn't bring us any greatness.

by t jay on Jan 30, 2008 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

huh?
That would not work.  Dallas would not give up terry and harris just for kidd, who is on his way down.  Plus i think that we should not give up webster, he has too much potential and is a perfect fit for the team.  I would much rather give up sergio.

by The Trooth on Jan 29, 2008 11:53 PM PST reply actions

where, exactly? Oh, yeah, down.
Hate the game, not the player.

by Rodendridge on Jan 30, 2008 12:36 AM PST up reply actions

Not necessarily
His stats may be down, but he's still crucial to Dallas' success. He's the only real more-than-decent shooting guard in the team. But that's another topic.

by Eventine on Jan 30, 2008 6:58 AM PST up reply actions

If that trade went down...
...it would undoubtedly be the first time that a team (the Nets) acquired a set of cousins (MWeb, Jason Terry) in a single trade--from two different teams.

But Dallas gets screwed in that deal.  NJ comes out like a bandit--turning their disgruntled superstar into four guys who can play.

by EngineerScotty on Jan 30, 2008 9:19 AM PST up reply actions

Hey now,
I didn't say this was a great trade. It fit four criteria:

  1. It got Jason Kidd to Dallas.
  2. It got Devin Harris to Portland.
  3. It didn't touch GO, LMA, or R.O.Y.
  4. It worked in the Trade Machine.

by rockingharder on Jan 30, 2008 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

another one that works
is switching Webster for Frye. Terry is on his way down, they have to give up something for Kidd and Harris would be it. They can be compensated with picks or Kopenen (we can drop a point guard with unfulfilled potential for one we know is good) or even both. The bad thing about this is it kills our deadball defense and our main cheerleader. No wonder he calls himself the buffet of goodness.

Revamped trade machine workings
This is the best I could get out of the trade machine. Miles and LaFrentz are interchangeable. Throw in some draft picks (which we can't use anyway), maybe a European or two (not that one of course), possibly a little cash, stir, and vuealla (a little help on the spelling of that would be great). In sum we would get Harris, be strapped with a contract that runs us the whole life yet half the money of Miles's (ironically with a guy named Hassell), and we lose some pieces that to me seem like they don't have as much upside as the projects we are keeping. New Jersey gets rid of Kidd, gets a lot of young talent and a draft pick or two so they can get on the path to rebuilding. Dallas gets Kidd for 2 years and puts themselves in a great spot for the '09 free agent class, dropping an additional $4.5m on the 09-10 season. The problem is I don't see us taking on another 3 year contract without dropping Miles, and the chances of that happening are, well, it depends on how badly these other guys want to make it happen. I would like to see it, but I am going to stop obsessing about it now.

by einman77 on Jan 30, 2008 5:44 AM PST reply actions

Actually Dallas
would get a total of $15M knocked off of the cap in 09-10. That gives them 2 tries to win it with Kidd and gives Cuban a chance to try and take a stab into the market. OK, I'm really done now. For now.

by einman77 on Jan 30, 2008 6:00 AM PST up reply actions

I don't understand why they'd trade Harris
I'd give up Jack and Webster in a heartbeat- is there a physical problem with Harris?

I think he'd fill in for Roy very ably on the "White" rotation. When he played for the Badgers, he was Bo Ryan's "coach on the floor"- he's an exceptionally smart player.

by fri2219 on Jan 30, 2008 5:59 AM PST reply actions

I don't think Dallas would do that
but I'd most certainly agree to it. I like Harris, he's a good, young, fast pg. He'd fit great with Roy.

by iDea on Jan 30, 2008 7:04 AM PST reply actions

Perhaps some of you who are in favor of Harris
Should do a little homework.  A few minutes checking ESPN's player stats will show that Harris and Jack are similar in many areas.

Both are 6-3, with Jack probably having an edge in strength and Harris in quickness.

Both are the same age.

Both have similar PER and scoring efficiency ratings.

Harris is a better shooter, Jack slightly better from the line.

Some of the differences in stats (like scoring & assist avg) can be attributed to the different roles each is asked to play.

Overall, it's hard to state unequivically that we are getting a much better player than we are giving up.  If the deal includes moving Miles, then perhaps it is worth considering.

Personally, I think Blake or Jones (plus draft picks) would be more likely to be included in any deal that brought us Harris.

by timg56 on Jan 30, 2008 7:50 AM PST reply actions

Disagree.
Harris is having a breakout season. He's one of the fastest guards in the league and one of the better defenders. Jack doesn't stand out (and that's putting it nicely) in either area. Harris is shooting 48 percent from the field while Jack is shooting 42 percent. Harris also gets to the line better. He has 196 FTA on the season to Jack's 129 despite the fact that Harris has only played 30 more total minutes on the season. Harris solves so many problems for us it's not even funny. He can guard the quickest PGs in the league, he can finish on the fastbreak (he'll even dunk it!), he creates fastbreaks with his steals, he can penetrate for high percentage shots and he gets to the foul line. In addition he doesn't need to dominate the ball so Roy will have plenty of time to do be the playmaker. If the Blazers can somehow land the young, talented, starting PG for the (currently) number 3 seed in the West without giving up Roy, LMA or Oden they'd be sorta crazy not to.

by nlj on Jan 30, 2008 1:05 PM PST up reply actions

NO DEAL
I don't think KP makes this trade. Harris signed an extention that starts in the 08/09 season for 50 million for 5 years, that means he is on the books until 2013/2014 for about 10 million per year. According to the salary site Dave linked, http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/resources/07-08salaries.htm his salary in 09 will be just over 9 million, which would pretty much take up any cap room we have that year.

So the only way I see KP doing this move, is if he think Harris is the answer for us at the starting PG spot. And while he is good, is he really 5-6 million a year better than Steve Blake? Harris is a better defender against the quicker guards of the west according to Hollinger, and he scores more points. Their assist avg are about the same, and the shooting % are about equal as well. Personally I would keep steve as my pg, because he fits well, has a much better contract, and frankly Harris is not worth 5-6 million more per year than steve.

according to espn insider Outlaw is part of this rumored deal.

"The Nets are discussing a complicated three-team scenario with the Mavericks and Blazers in which Jason Kidd would go to Dallas, league sources said.
In return, the Nets would get back young players (Jarrett Jack and Travis Outlaw), expiring contracts (Devean George, DeSagana Diop), Jerry Stackhouse, draft picks and cash. More players, including other Nets, would be involved"
