Martell is clearly struggling with his shot. With the up and down of the last ten games, Nate must be considering moving Webster to the White unit and seeing what Travis can do as a starter. Travis can play 3 just as well as 4, and probably gives us better defensive matchups early at that position.
Similary, teams have found an answer to Brandon Roy -- double team him up top. This move requires a response -- a relief valve shooter who can make teams pay. Starting Channing Frye over Pryzbilla is an answer. I really like what Joel has done to improve his shooting, but he is not ready to be taking alot of 16 footers. As defenders rotate, this could leave LaMarcus with more room down on the post.
This is not just loading the starting line-up with shooters. Both of these moves leave the first unit more athletic. Brandon can lock down a guard, just like he often does. The main problem would be against an opposing starting center with bulk who scores in the post. That might demand we start Joel.
Joel's size and shot-blocking could really help the zone the second unit plays. Joel could block shots, and the sagging zone could help on rotations and picking up rebounds behind him.
This switch could also be used occasionally to throw other teams off their game plans. I hope we try Jones or Travis over Martell, and Frye over P-zilla, in the starting unit if we keep having to struggle back from these ugly holes.
