Gameday Open Thread: Hawks vs. Blazers

It's an afternoon start today and I'll be working so I won't be able to join you in chatting.  But I always read your impressions after I've watched the game on Tivo!  So pull up a chair, pour yourself some coffee or a cold one, and make yourself at home while discussing before, during, and after the game.

The Jersey Contest Form for this game is here.

Don't you hate that on Yahoo when those folks just post "first" and they are actually the 3rd or 4th person to do that?  I am pretty sure I can be here today for the game.  I like the open thread.  It's jiggy.

Oh Crap
The 2008 U.S. Championships are on at the same time.  That's U.S. Figure Skating if you're not hip.  I have a total man crush on Johnny Weir.

Here are some great quotes: http://celebhijinx.blogspot.com/2006/02/johnny-weir-is-queen-of-world.html

Really, did you see Mirai Nagasu's performance tonight?  Wow, she totally recovered from that fall and won the National Title.  I can't wait to see her in the Olympics.  She's only 14, I think she's our ticket to golf for the next two Olympics.

is going to be a lot of fun. Everyone has their sense of humor sharpened to a razor fine edge (Blazer's Edge that is) and is trying to out "witty" each other.

I can't wait! Go Blazers! Beat the Hawks! Start a new win streak!

GO BLAZERS
In order to have any shot at the playoffs, we're going to need to continue defending our home court at an excellent rate.

We simply have to win this type of game.

Go out and get it done, boys.

by jksnake99 on Jan 27, 2008 1:20 PM PST reply actions

Big game
This feels like a big game to me.  Everyone knew the road trip was going to be tough, and the Rockets game was effectively the 8th game of that trip.  So going 3 & 5 wasn't that bad.

But the team has slipped in the standings, and now here comes Atlanta, who we just had to go into overtime to beat.  It's always tough to beat a team twice in a row, and Atlanta is talented.  If the Blazers lose, that's three losses in a row.

So like I said: this feels like a biggie.  Go Blazers!

You know what would be really crazy
If we were tied and there were 12 seconds left in overtime against the hawks and we ran a iso play for trout and he nailed a jumper from a foot inside the 3 point line to win the game. That would be crazy.

If we don't win by at LEAST 37
We better just focus on the draft and sit Roy and LMA.  If we don't win every game by a margin clearly believed to be a "blow out", what is the point of even playing?  Bring on the lottery, please!

No excuses.

Some credit to LaMarcus
he just doesn't have any help down low... it's him and 4 perimeter guys (or Pryzbilla) out there, so help D doesn't have to defend against anyone else in the lane.

But I agree, he looks pretty horrible as of late, as does everyone else. I mean come on, JJ33 has had airballs in the last 2 games, the 2nd best 3 point shooter in the league shouldn't miss the entire basket on wide open looks...

Boos
If the boos at the Gahden are directed to the Blazers, then I'm disappointed. Yes, we're playing poorly, but after all the team has done this year, it is NOT time to turn on the team.

We have a team of fragile psyches (Martell, Jarrett, etc.). Let's not exacerbate it by booing.

Let's have the ushers at the RG boot the boo-ers. Who's with me?

I agree totally.   Our young Blazers are learning to play in the NBA.   Martell is just learning to play like a college senior since he had no college, the same for Travis.

Remember the beginning of the year.   This team has achieved a lot, much more than anyone expected.   Don't jump off the bandwagon after a bad game and a half.

by jksnake99 on Jan 27, 2008 4:09 PM PST reply actions

I think
What frustrates us as fans right now, is that we have seen the Blazers play forty times better than this, and beat teams that are on another stratosphere compared to the Hawks - and beat them soundly.

Seeing them slump like this with little to no effort on both offense and defense is disheartening, to say the least.

by damir on Jan 27, 2008 4:10 PM PST reply actions

exactly
Once we've seen them play great ball, it's tough to watch them play selfishly, shoot poorly and get outhustled.

Atlanta's a tough matchup for us though- WAY more athletic than we are.

by jksnake99 on Jan 27, 2008 4:13 PM PST up reply actions

give hawks credit...
  • started the game with way more energy than us.

  • leaked out on our jump shots cause we don't offensive rebound to get easy buckets

  • pushed the tempo and trapped our pick and rolls.

  • our energy, rebounding, offensive execution has been pathetic

Surge has been up and down lately
Tonight, he's clearly up.

But I'll say this: I think we're seeing the end of the Jarrett Jack era. I'll take Surge's occasionally up than Jack's always mediocre plus the automatic foot-on-line turnover every game.

Get ready for more Surge in coming weeks.

key to the 4th quarter
we made an adjustment on the high pick and roll, instead setting hard screens which the hawks jumped.  the blazers did half screens a la phoenix suns, when they jumped, the screener had a open middle lane to catch the ball then shoot, pass, or drive.

Not too much of a good thing
Outlaw has been awesome from the corner but Webster has too much scoring potential as well to be traded now.  I say we keep him until his rookie contract is up and see what we got.

Ya dig?

Can't have too many good shooters who play hard on defense as well.

I think this half season has shown that Martell is not the answer to Portland's starting SF question.  He's had a few good games, but hasn't strung too many of them in a row.

Really set the world on fire his first FOUR years in the league as well.  Unless you're getting something purty sweet, you keep a 21 year old athletic shooter who has a lot of potential left to mine.

We definitely need to play a lot better.

I'd just like to see him recognized.   Plus, Aldridge and Roy are locks for the Rook/Soph game at least and Jones should be at the 3 pt shootout.  So, if 3 guys are going to New Orleans anyway, Roy might as well play in the big boys game.

You can be sure that game will be given to every coach on DVD by their own scouting staffs.  the first 44 minutes are how to stop the Blazers, the last 4 showing how no one stops Roy.

This game is why
You should never give 100%.

You should give around 92, 93% and save the final 7% for the last few minutes when you make a push to win the game.  The Hawks were giving 100% all game and then didn't have enough left to win!

Math don't lie, not even for a woman.

Roy is unstoppable
As painful as it was, I saw the whole game and it paid off in the end. Definitely need to download that 4th quarter from somewhere.

by amitp06 on Jan 27, 2008 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

Painful indeed
The first 3 quarters literally were hurting me.  That was very frustrating to watch.  But then Super-Brandon (aided this time by his sidekick Channing Frye) came to the rescue.  Normally, it seems that Frye can only make open perimeter jumpers; all the short & in-between stuff gives him trouble.  But in the second half tonight, when they doubled Roy out high, Frye made 'em pay.

But back to the subject of pain: I think a very brief moment of sympathy is on order for the Hawks and their fans.  Remember how we felt when Philly came from way back to beat the Blazers earlier this season?  The Hawks played a perfect game for most of the night, and all for naught.  That's a big ouch...

And Outlaw too
Frye kept us going, Outlaw started the the fire, and Roy finished them off. The three stars of his game. Others took the cue and picked it up a little too.

And yeah, they probably deserved it but no answer for Roy down the stretch, just too bad.

Do you mean "owned?"
Reminds me of Garnett, I'm not sure I like it. It doesn't seem Broy like.

by ojala on Jan 27, 2008 6:59 PM PST up reply actions

I mean PWNED
Roy yells it even after hitting a routine FT as well, directing it at the hoop.  Roy is often the most braggartly player upon the court at any given time, including Garnett.  One of his most outrageous comments is as follows:

"The veracity of my multilayered attack shall be thrust upon thee verily; shall thee be cursed by the crossed-over?  Be-deviled by The Pulled-Back Shot-Jump?  Made to look the buffoon by my numerous yet equally vexing "posted-up" arsenal?  I thinketh thou not properly prepared for a Roy-Bot such as I!"

It was so harsh, I could hear it over the TV.  Then when he makes a shot he says PWN'D and subtly kicks the other player in the nuts on defense.

Roy is like Bruce Bowen, KG, Kobe, Manu, all rolled up into one.  He's maybe the dirtiest player in the NBA.

An unbelieveable comeback
We are lucky to have many very talented players who are growing up in front of our eyes.

They have great chemistry as Quick's article in the Oregonian today details.   They are learning on the job and getting better every day.

I hope K.P. does not make any trades this year.   He needs to see how these young guys develop.   Will all the potential actually develop?   Martell is one of my favorite players because of his great athletic talent and enthusiasm.   He will be an All-Star some day and he should still be on the Blazer roster then, not traded away.

Next year we probably will have too much talent -- although you probably never have too much considering probable injuries.   Rudy Fernandez, Petteri Koponen and Joel Freeland will be ready to try to make the team, plus one or more draft picks.  Let those decisions wait until then.   Do not make changes now when many things can happen in the interim.

K.P. has been fantastic in putting together this team.   I hope he will show the patience to let the team develop instead of trying to make more "brilliant" moves.   He deserves the General Manager of the year now without needing to do anything further.

And I hope our fans show patience also to let this "team of destiny" develop instead of going for a quick fix to make a big splash in this year's playoffs.
