Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Rockets

We're back home again!  Finally a game that starts after you get off work (as long as your name isn't TominHawaii)!  It seems like forever.  What will the first home game bring?  The old saw is that the first home game after a long road swing actually feels more like the last road game of the trip.  What do you see happening tonight?

P.S.  The Jersey Contest Form for this game is here.

I can't even imagine
what it's like to be a Rockets fan. Watching Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady play the whole season yet still being dissapointed. They're in a sort of NBA purgatory, not good enought to win a championship but not bad enough to justify blowing it up and starting over.

by jayseyfield on Jan 25, 2008 12:06 AM PST reply actions

Hmmm?
I think I can imagine that - all too clearly!

Maybe if they get lucky, Bonzi can kick off a rebuilding effort in Houston to match the one he helped initiate in Portland!

Think of Bonzi as one of those corporate turnaround artists.  One of the soulless, evil... oh, wait a minute, they're all soulless and evil.  Okay, how about this: he's the Jack Kevorkian for underachieving, talented-on-paper, aging superstar oriented franchises...

Not that I hold a grudge or anything...

This kind of game is tough
But it's the kind you have to find a way to win if you want to be in the playoffs.  We can afford losses on the road to teams like Houston.  We can't afford many losses at home against the teams that are good, but not great.

Houston still has the capability to be very, very good by the end of the year, but they aren't right now.  Get them while you can.

We need a big game out of our 3 point shooters, and it would help if Travis were to have one of his explosive games.

The guys will be tired
Like Dave said, this is really an extension of the road trip.  The guys had a long flight from NO, then one day to recuperate.  At least they got to sleep in their own beds, and they'll be playing in the familiar confines of the Rose Garden.  That counts for something.

I've got my fingers crossed that they can start this home stand on a winning note.

I know with Sergio they only made 5,000.

Yao Strategy
With Yao we'll obviously have to double team him if he gets the ball in the post and make the other players beat us. It seems like bringing the weak side player across the baseline has worked ok-the first time I noticed this strategy work effectively was when it was employed in last year's playoff series between Dallas and Golden State. Nellie would frequently double Dirk this way and it seemed to fluster him.

Besides Joél I'd say LaMarcus will be the man to check him. He guarded Shaq fairly well in the second half of the Miami game, so we'll see what he can do.....

by sergioFTW on Jan 25, 2008 2:41 PM PST reply actions

Yao
Yao has improved a lot, but he is still prone to foul trouble and getting tired when he has to run up and down the court a lot.  I can predict some fan whining when Joel doesn't play much tonight, but Frye and LMA are sooooo much better suited to play Yao on the offensive end.

You have to go right at Yao, force him to foul you.  You have to move on offense and make him keep up with you in transition, which will be hard because we need LMA to rebound but can be done.  You have to use your athleticism to thwart Yao, and you limit how effective he can be.

Make him tired and fouly.  Make him guard someone who can score so he has to make an effort (sorry Joel lovers, including me).  And hope T-Mac wants to mail in another performance and that the role players have a typical game.

The Frenchman needs to colonize the Chairman Yao, and show him what TRUE POWER really is.

RIP CITY, tonihgts x factor
The Blazers may be tired tonight after a long trip, but I'm sure they're relieved to be home and in the friendly confines of The Wells Fargo Rose Garden.

Lets give them the homecoming they need and live up to our sixth man title.  The Denver game when Outlaw blocked Kleiza's three at the buzzer, that night waas the loudest I've ever heard the garden.  I'm hoping we can match that tonight because as Dave mentioned, winning this first one against a team looking to knock us out of the playoff picture will set the tone for the next five at home.

Besides, we've one 12 in a row at home, that's a streak we need to keep alive!

Be the sixth man Rip City!

We can put them over the edge!

Minny is playing well in Boston right now, up an insurmountable 47 to 44.  Goooooo BASSY!

Minny is a bad team, obviously, ill suited for each other.  But they're better than our 21 win season team from a few years ago, but just don't win.  They got more talent, at least.

C'mon, Boston, lose again!  It's fun.

Help Please!
Long time lurker first time poster who is stranded out at Mt. Hood (welches) with a bad case of Blazer Fever.

Anybody know of any option for watching the game out here? I called around to a few bars to no avail. If not, I think I've heard mention on this site of some website that might carry it live?

Last ditch, anybody know of a radio station carrying the game that reaches out here?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm jonesing bad out here and would love to catch the game tonight.

750 KXL should reach out there
If you go to NBA.com, you can click on the "listen live" button, and you can listen to the Portland feed there.

You can try www.channelsurfing.net sometimes they have the games online.

I thought it was going to be carried on KGW tonight tho, would surprise me if no bar is carrying it... and I personally love watching games with a bunch of other Blazer fans live... always fun.

Martell needs to
learn the skills of ball handling and driving to the basket and more to be the shooting guard to Roy's point guard in the years to come.

Rudy Fernandez I suspect is being forecasted to get the opportunity to be that 2 guard.

by OrygunRod on Jan 25, 2008 8:09 PM PST reply actions

Martell...
Martell has been playing the 3, has he not?

I think Martell is genius when he gets open looks and he has trouble making shots when anyone is on top of him... He needs to figure out how to create separation like Roy and Outlaw are able to do and it'll be fine with him.

I'm not sure he's NBA starter caliber this year, but he's starting and they're winning, so what do I know?

He'll get better, for sure. That is ultimately gonna prove to be one of the best draft choices of The Old Regime.

by timbo on Jan 25, 2008 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah
I'm a big Martell fan, but it was obviously the wrong choice then but it works out now because he'll fit in really well with Oden and Roy.

A happy mistake.

He may just grow into the job.   Akamian is a long time pro and yes he does a very decent job.

He is the producer of the show isn't he?

I hope they run more plays for Martell and don't rely solely on jump shots.

by OrygunRod on Jan 25, 2008 8:18 PM PST reply actions

You just contradicted yourself
I hope they run more plays for Martell too, but those plays always end in a jumpshot.  I hope he is defended by a small guy again so he can do the turnaround jumper, cause he makes that.

The assistant coaches should work with Martell
daily on handling and dribbling the ball.

I remember Martell's first year at the first rookie game after Summer League (or maybe before).  Martell was given the talk of bringing the ball up court after the other team made a basket.

The other guard stole the ball from Martell 3 or 4 times and Martell's confidence was totally shattered.   From then on he refused to dribble the ball against anyone who was capable of making a steal  --  which is most NBA guards.

Give him confidence by force feeding him daily over and over until he sleeps with that ball and protects it form everyone.

Roy's Complaints
Has anyone else noticed that when Roy's pissed about a call or a play, he is the last guy back on defense by a considerable margin? I've noticed that in about 3 or 4 games now and it really bothers me.

Very fun season
But this isn't a fun game.  I'm not sure why yet.

by Mortimer on Jan 25, 2008 9:17 PM PST reply actions

It's because...
...Now the magic trick is apparent. For a while it was like a Disney movie. Then teams started to figure out the secret (deep bench, snappy passing, ability to hit open jumpers) and started playing tighter defense -- which ended the fun, snappy passing and eliminated 75% of the open looks.

And they figured out the Achilles heel -- or rather, the large, protruding Achilles buttocks -- of the Blazers, their weakness down low after Pryz leaves the game after his 18 minute stint. And they exploit that.

Reality has set in.

It started with the Toronto game, when Nate failed to find an answer to Bosh.

*sigh*
shot selection (trout, LMA, Frye mainly) has become a huge concern of late.  I'm tired of seeing one pass and a 20-foot jump shot every other position.  It worked when we were hitting them at a lights-out pass in December and early January, but when your percentage comes back to Earth, Charles B. is right.

Honestly, does ANYONE not know Outlaw is going to jack up a 20 footer EVERY time he gets the ball?  He's been doing it since game one.  No one really cared during the streak, but it's a recipe for disaster long term.

We need (to state the obvious):

  1. Defensive rebounding
  2. Some semblance of inside scoring
  3. Easy buckets

A jump shooting team who doesn't get cheap buckets is doomed to failure.

As has become our MO of late, we manage to lose games in which the other teams' stars play poorly and we are done in by bench players having unusually big games.

I'm frustrated and disappointed, but that means that I care again and that the team has taught us all that they can win, and taught us to expect them too.  In the end, that is a good thing.

by Lizzy Lowblow on Jan 25, 2008 9:42 PM PST reply actions

Gotta improve or no playoffs
The same glaring problems yet again.  No penetration by anyone other than Brandon, horrific shot selection, TERRIBLE TERRIBLE rebounding, offensive cluelessness whenever Blake or Brandon doesn't have the ball, mindless turnovers, lack of intensity.

These are things that you absolutely MUST do in the play-offs, and in the stretch run to make the playoffs if you are a bubble team.

So let's not do the whole low expectation/make excuses thing this time.  The team has proven they can win games, and this was a big home game that needed to be won.

Is this the end of the world?  No.  But it was a pretty bad loss.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 25, 2008 9:47 PM PST reply actions

I don't think we're making low expectations
I think we're just lowering the ridiculously high expectations we had before the rugged road trip started. It's almost always been a norm that a team who comes back from a long road trip gets a little iffy on the first home game back. Not to mention, Houston's riding on its best stretch of the season.

It was a loss waiting to happen. Of course, our first half surge gave me some hopes, but that clearly wore them out. I do agree that there were a bunch of bad shot selections and some that just made me go "What the hell." Maybe their brains are fatigued as well. Oh well.

Dave is the voice of reason. Chill out, and read his  forthcoming recap.

This loss does not doom our playoff chances.

Remember that this team has not had a real practice in two weeks.

We were exposed as a team with real weaknesses tonight, but they are the same weaknesses that we had when we won 13 straight.

Barring injury, this team will be fine.  This team will make the playoffs.

Bad Game
No Rebounding we won't get to the playoffs. And Yes I think Scola fouled just about every time  down floor, and I don't understand why he wasn't getting called for it. I mean ca'mon man he's a rookie from overseas isn't he. does that mean they don't call fouls on him.besides that the Blazers just played lackluster ball they let everyone on the Rockets team rebound and push them around.Hopefuly we can get some rebounding help thru the draft.Because G.Oden will not be able to do all the rebounding by himself. So PLEASE WE NEED REBOUNDING HELP if not this year next year for sure oden will need help.

one game
I think thats what this blog is for sergioFTW,to voice what we feel and think.and I think you should take one game at a time like I think you mean. But we have to look at both good and bad and what it takes to inprove for future games so that the team can win more games.I myself love the Blazers always have and always will.so that being said, I really do think REBOUNDING should be a major concern look at last night 49 to 30! and you are right this is the same team I  or we loved a month ago and even last year when they only had what 31 wins all year. But that doesn't stop me from wanting them to get better or me from saying what I think it might take or need to get better.

by billyjoejack on Jan 26, 2008 10:12 AM PST reply actions

agreeed
I was talking about all the people pulling there hair out about not making the playoffs and other extreme reactions. clearly, the team needs to improve, and rebounding is especially a concern. Of course, it isn't one likely to improve much this season, as I believe management is committed to keeping this group together to finish the season. with Oden coming in next year and--the way i see it--one extra shooting guard who sometimes plays point for no reason i can see, we'll be looking to trade for a banger in the off season as well. so, yes we need more rebounding, and you'll be able to say that for about 40 more games.
