Fizbin's Totally Stupid Box Score

In order to amuse myself during the game, I invented a totally biased box score and kept it over the course of the game. It's meant to balance good plays with bad. So, here's how it works.

Good play: won a contested rebound, made a shot, great pass for an open shot (irrespective of whether the guy made it), drawn foul, steal/deflection, et. Anything I thought was cool. +1 point

Bad play: did not box out, dumb pass, unforced turnover, a total brick of a miss such as an airball, a really dumb shot taken early in the shot clock and contested (unless it's made), etc. Anything I thought to myself: "Self, you just witnessed crap!" -1 point

Stupid Play: Something that is just mindbogglingly dumb. -3 points.

Awesome play: *Something that is a privilege just to witness." +3 points.

So I tallied it all up, and here's the final total:

Steve Blake: +13 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 3, Good: 10, Awsm: 2)

Brandon Roy: +10 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 7, Good: 14, Awsm: 1)

Travis Outloaw: +9 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 6, Good: 12, Awsm: 1)

Joel Pryzbilla: +7 (Stpd: 1, Bad: 2, Good 6, Awsm: 2 [remember those early blocks?])

Martell Webster: +5 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 3, Good: 5, Awsm: 1)

James Jones: +5 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 3, Good: 5, Awsm: 1)

Lamarcus Aldridge: +3 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 12, Good: 12, Awsm: 1)

Sergio Rodriguez: -1 (Stpd: 0, Bad: 1, Good: 0, Awsm: 0)

Channing Rye: -3 (Stpd: 1, Bad: 2, Good: 2, Awsm: 1)

Jarrett Jack: -3 (Stpd: 1, Bad: 5, Good: 5, Awsm: 0)

Stupidest Player: Tie to Joel, Jack, and Frye.

Baddest Player: Lamarcus by a mile--learn how to rebound.

Goodest Player: Roy but with LMA and Outlaw right on his heels (at least LMA can make some shots)

Awesomest Player: tie for Blake and Joel but Joel got his basically on the first two plays of the game, then it was over.

What do you think of the Fizbin Box? (Yeah, I played D&D when I was a kid.)

Fizbin scores...
a -1 on his own scale.

LOL this was a fun diary.  Good job.

I like it
although I'd be too lazy to ever actually do that.

Money Ball Beware!
I think Kevin Pritchard will read this post and hire you on the spot.  Nate will spout about the importance of Fizbin points after ball games, and Paul Allen will introduce you to many important people.  Book deal will follow.  And it all started at Blazer's Edge.  (Don't forget to thank Dave in your memoirs...).

I love it
even tho it's totally subjective (my awesome might be your good.)

Hope to see more so we can figure out just who is the MVP-BB.  And we can add MSP to our awards - and then trade the winner.

I'm still trying to figure out
whether that was -3 for stupid or +3 for awesome.

Especially when you remember this is the Buffet of Goodness we're talking about.

Yeah...
I think the math is off there. Shouldn't Frye's score be 0? 3 + 2 - 2 - 3?

Typo
Just checked my spreadsheet (yeah, I made a spreadsheet... I'm that much of a geek).

Frye had no awesomeness. Just the stupid, the two bads, and the two goods (-3, -2, and +2).

I Wanna Play!
Wouldn't it be fun to have a Fizbin night and then compare our scores???  We could make a FIZBIN median score out of them...

You guys cracks me up
You know, that's why I love coming to this blog. Puts a smile on my face.

Yeah, I'll try it again. It's actually easy to do since I'm watching the game on the dang computer anyway. The only problem was when they put Oden on half the screen and I couldn't tell what was happening in.

Channing "Rye" was what I call a fortuante typo. I'm calling him Rye from now on in honor of the buffet.

I agree with jorga... totally subjective
but really interesting.

I also have the same question as rockingharder - how did Channing get a -3.  It looks like it should add up to zero.

This might really be interesting if several of us used the Fizbin scoring method and posted our box scores after each game.  Get a large enough sample and the subjectivity part may cancel out.

Of course I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go to all the effort, unless it was made easier.  Perhaps Fizbin Box Score sheets.  Lists all the players and has the 4 scoring columns already listed.  You just make your mark.

Nellie
This really makes a lot of sense to me. I remember hearing a couple of years ago that Don Nelson and his staff did something similar for every game. To me this raised interesting questions; Should we count assists on only the baskets made or on all of the good shots created by the pass. Another thing I always wondered was why don't you get an assist for passing to a guy who then is fouled and gets free throws. Did you not assist in creating that scoring opportunity?

by malarky on Jan 24, 2008 9:23 AM PST reply actions

Totally
agree about the assists.  And since 3 pointers are worth more, how about those assists counting as 1.5 ;-)

And as long as we're revising the statistics, is a bobbled pass always a "bad pass" with the turnover scored against the passer?  Sometimes the receiver fumbles the ball resulting in a turnover.  Maybe Joel can work on his receiving next summer in the same way he worked on his foul shooting.

Nice Fizbin
ESPN should hire you to replace John Ho##inger. You should take these for a while and then we could have a fpg(fizbin points per game).

This is sort of a joke but the concept is not
I think everyone realizes that a traditional NBA box score is almost worse than useless. As PJ said above, really you should get an assist for creating a good shot irrespective of if the shot is made (unless it's something foolish like expecting Joel to shoot a 3) or when someone is fouled after creating their dunk (robbing Surge of some assists).

Steals are even worse. The person who dislodged the ball? The person who coralled the ball?

Then there are rebounds. Contested? Uncontested? They count the same... even the ones that dribble into your hands off of a FT miss. What about not boxing out.

Of course, the Fizbin Box is an exercise of subjectivity... but I think everyone sees the need for better statistics than what we get.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
