Gameday Open Thread: Blazers at Timberwolves

How's it going to go tonight?  Will we establish a new streak?  Will Sebastian Telfair light us up?  Will the Target Center roof cave in from ice pressure, only to be buoyed by the ocean of wailing tears sprung from the eyes of Minnesota fans this season?

Register your pre-, in-, and post-game thoughts right here.

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

P.S. Update: Mike sends in this Bill Simmons article that starts with a lot of positive stuff about Boston (natch) but then goes on to praise the direction of the Blazers. Thanks Mike!

We're a good team, forget ju-ju (it was fun while it lasted).

We'd better come to play.  Minnesota needs wins, and they don't really believe in us yet, they still think we are one of the teams they can get.

This is not an easy bounce-back win like some people seem to think.  We should win it, but we'd better play well.  If we play well, they can't hang with us, and we may even blow them out, but if we don't play well, we're in trouble.

A difference in young teams?
Pulled this from the Minn. Star Tribune :"Twenty minutes after the loss, the Wolves locker room was filled with New Year's wishes and laughter that was only interrupted when veteran Greg Buckner reminded his younger teammates that they just got their butts whipped."

I didn't read about our locker room after the Utah loss, but somehow I doubt that after 20 min. the loss had been forgotten.

Note the link on that page to the previous discussion of Roy and Foye.

This is not a good time to be a Timberwolves fan.

Sounds familiar
That was the sort of story you'd hear out of the Blazers locker room in years past.  Glad to see that it has 'moved on down the line'.

The Herd
Did any one hear Nate McMillan on Colin Cowherd's show. He was on at 9:30. I didn't get to listen to it but was wondering if anyone could give a short recap.

I didn't hear it
But I know it is up on ESPN.com.  I listen to his podcast which is just excerpts from his radio show.

Best we could hope for
If we had any team we wanted to play a game after ending our streak, I don't know that there is a team that we would choose over the T'wolves.  Its a good way to rebound.

by homersolo on Jan 2, 2008 3:48 PM PST reply actions

My thoughts exactly
I really hope the kids go and make a statement of sorts, that the streak was the coming out party for a decent young team and not just a confluence of luck and a lengthy homestand.

You couldn't ask for a better team to face than the Wolves after the end of the streak.  A loss would be kinda embarrassing, but still not the end of the world...

But we should win, and I'd expect our guys to be ready to kill whoever they played tonight.

Hell, every game our guys win is a new record for the number of wins a team this young has ever had.  We got a bright future no matter if we stay over .500 or not.

KILL THESE MINNY NINNIES.

Here we go, Blazers
I'm more excited for this game than I have been for a while.  Now we got something to prove, and they're not going down easy.  They're gonna pounce on us, and we have to prove we're harder, stronger, and quicker than anyone thinks.  Yeah, Blazers, Yeah!  Let's do it!

by cashMoney on Jan 2, 2008 5:00 PM PST reply actions

League Pass has the Minny feed
I, as a homer through and through, prefer it when I get the Blazer feed.  These guys better talk nice about every single Blazer from Roy to Seung-Jin or I am writing a letter.  A STERNLY WORDED LETTER.

Big game, big game...

Minny gonna be in our shoes a year from now
Sez Minny announcer fella.  I dunno if that's good for them or bad for us.  Unless they get a trade going, I think Minny is 3 years off... they need draft picks more than development of the current roster, like our Blazers needed a few years ago.

Minny could become good in a few years, as in decent for a young team, but I dunno if McHale is capable of drafting correctly.

by Mortimer on Jan 2, 2008 5:05 PM PST reply actions

Yah
This should also be listed under "stupid things people/fans think".  Everyone thinks that just because one team does it in the league their team also can.  News flash:  you can't do it, Minnesota, because you don't have Brandon Roy, Lamarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden, Nate McMillan, Kevin Pritchard, and the crew.  It isn't an accident that we're rising like this.  It isn't just something that happens when you get a few good players or high draft picks.  There are at least seven high picks every year and those teams don't do what we're doing.  I'm not bagging on Minny fans though because Blazer fans said things like this for years during the Jailblazer era.

What a joke
Bill Simmons <insert derogatory term here> Danny Ainge after he called for his head less than 4 months ago. Bravo.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 5:06 PM PST reply actions

The Garnett/Allen trade
Was all part of Ainge's master plan from day one.  He knew trading Roy away for nothing would one day open up Garnett being moved to the Celtics, and we were all just too foolish to see!

Plus, McHale owed Ainge ten bucks and Ainge kept hassling him for it and so instead of paying him back, McHale did Ainge a "solid" by trading KG for the Celtics' scraps.

But wouldn't you know it, Ainge still wants his ten bucks!

by Mortimer on Jan 2, 2008 5:09 PM PST up reply actions

I am on LP too Mortimer
but I like the opposing feed from time to time.  They give you good perspective on how other people see your team.

Also it lets you see how much local feeds view their own teams and gives you perspective on what all of your people might be saying about yours.  For instance the Minnesota guys are not going to come out and say, "Our team sucks like a vacuum cleaner" so you listen to what they DO say and then you know that translates into "Our team sucks like a vacuum cleaner".  Then you know when you hear it again around the league.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 5:07 PM PST reply actions

On LP too
I'm also watching the Minnesota feed on LP, first time I will have watched a game with opposing announcers doing the telecast since we have turned it around.

I'm curious what they say about us.

by Replacement Level Poster on Jan 2, 2008 5:11 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree
I really do like to hear what others say about us, I guess I am just in a homerish mood.  I can't remember how the Minny announcers are, but I ain't too worried.

But yeah, I like learning who the "Sergios" are for other teams.  Who do they love perhaps irrationally and most average fans don't know much about?

As long as it's not the Celtics feed, I'll live.

Anybody have an offshore internet feed to this game? I caught a link off here a long time ago.

by superyeadon on Jan 2, 2008 5:11 PM PST reply actions

There is a game delay
They've got a huge sliver of wood missing from the floor...maybe a foot and a half long and an inch wide.  It's like a big, broken off crack.

Nobody noticed this pre-game when they were assembling the floor?

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 5:12 PM PST reply actions

Someone else's job
This was Minny's last hope to win, inserting a portal into the 8th dimension on the middle of the court.  Roy takes one step near the vortex, gets sucked in and BOOM we're down 50 as we hit a wrinkle in time caused by the sudden disappearance of Roy's space-time matter.

It's science.

by Mortimer on Jan 2, 2008 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

LOL
It looks like they basically put duct tape over the gap in the floor.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 6:20 PM PST reply actions

lol. This 3d Mascot character
Gets major points cool points from me.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:23 PM PST reply actions

Travis
just does not have much strength in his hands when he grabs for a rebound.   Last game he lost possession of the ball several times and he did it again a few minutes ago losing that rebound out of bounds.

Get him some grips strengthening.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 6:24 PM PST reply actions

I think
If I was an announcer for a team as bad as the Twolves I would just rip on the team with sarcasm the whole game.

These guys are amazingly positive though. They should be suicide counselors.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:25 PM PST reply actions

At halftime
the Blazers are going to have to wipe the Timberwolf off the bottom of their shoe.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:25 PM PST reply actions

Rofl.
That's the one thing they lack the most "decent outside jump shooters"

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:25 PM PST reply actions

Heart, defense, slashers,
passers, athletes, floor putty.

They lack everything.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

The 'Wolves
look like they've given up on this game already.  I think they have seen this before.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:26 PM PST reply actions

NO 3 POINTERS TRAVIS
Jesus, take that shot at the end of the clock in desperation, drive otherwise.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 6:26 PM PST reply actions

Yes
The 4-26 wolverines need to get more respect from the refs.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:27 PM PST reply actions

WOW
these ANNOUCERS ARE RETARTED
only the best of the best

by soulja2boy on Jan 2, 2008 6:27 PM PST reply actions

I recall
plenty of Portland folks complaining about refs when we were winning 20 per year.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:28 PM PST reply actions

Don't worry
I'll still complain when the bannersare being raised to the rafters.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

No doubt
I don't mind the guff given refs.  I was just defending the Minnesota announcers' right to do it as well.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Wait
There are referees in this game? I've heard three whistles being blown all game long.

What a difference from Monday's whistle-ton.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:28 PM PST reply actions

Roy
does not make every shot on every drive to the basket.   Martell should take notice of that and try driving to the rim himself.   He is letting Travis take his role.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 6:28 PM PST reply actions

I hope Brewer
eventually ends up on this team.
- Sam

by Samuelson on Jan 2, 2008 6:29 PM PST reply actions

This arena is so sad. It makes me feel like it exists in the same universe as American Gothic (the painting).

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:30 PM PST reply actions

Was
Was thinking Exploding Clock by Dali instead.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Brandon wastes
a Sergio no-look to end the quarter.

Wow...make that Al Jefferson ALMOST makes a full-court shot to end the quarter.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:30 PM PST reply actions

Brandon
Is pretty cold today.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:31 PM PST reply actions

Are you ready
For 12 minutes of No Commercial Halftime Entertainment?

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:32 PM PST reply actions

Up by 10
Now we get to see how the young Blazers hold a lead in a road game thay have been told over and over they will win.   Nate will keep their heads in it.   Perhaps we will see a 20 point blow out?!?!

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 6:32 PM PST reply actions

It would've been nice to see...
...Sergio get a little more run in the first half, given the way he was playing. Nate is usually pretty good about riding hot hands, so I thought he might let him stay a bit longer. Guess not.
When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

by kdfkwak on Jan 2, 2008 6:33 PM PST reply actions

52-42
With Brandon shooting like 3-12, and James Jones eating the Twolves alive.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:34 PM PST reply actions

Weird.
Sergio has played great, 6 minutes 8 assists.

Also a lot of us are watching online here
http://www.channelsurfing.net/

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely
This is one of the calmer games.

In February during one of the road games versus the Lakers we're going to shoot for 2000 comments.  Tons o' fun.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:34 PM PST reply actions

It is fun
You can't repond to every comment but it's still fun to read them.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

If you haven't already
do yourself a favor and read the Lottery Commemorative Thread in the bottom sidebar to the right.  That was from the day of the lottery drawing last year.  Every moment from the nervous anticipation to the realization that they had gotten to our spot without calling our name to the ultimate payoff is captured in crystal clarity.  Best...day...ever.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Did he just say
the white unit changed the complexion of the game? Thats kinda funny

by ryryslyry on Jan 2, 2008 6:36 PM PST reply actions

Man
There are a lot of super white guys in Minnesota

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:38 PM PST reply actions

You know your team sucks...
When you spend your halftime show talking about your local college basketball team.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:39 PM PST reply actions

WOw that is a sweet sweater
Anyone notice that Mountain Dew number?

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:46 PM PST reply actions

Good Sideline Commentary - Prefer harlow though
Though saying the blazers are shooting well from 3 at 25% is a little weird

by ppilot on Jan 2, 2008 6:46 PM PST reply actions

BLAKE FOR THREE
IN DESPERATION!  WOW!!!!!!!!

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:48 PM PST reply actions

He was shooting
from practically the crack in the floor

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:48 PM PST up reply actions

Hopefully
The Blazers blow this wide open so we get to see more Sergio action!

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:48 PM PST reply actions

OH MY GOD
HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:48 PM PST reply actions

I think we should just say to the Wolves
I dare you. Shoot that outside jumper. Do it.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:49 PM PST reply actions

what the hell??
Ball hits the top of the backboard and should be called out of bounds but the refs call NOTHING?!

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:49 PM PST reply actions

The problem with that
90-foot three is that it makes Martell look really bad for missing a normal one.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:49 PM PST reply actions

Thought
He got away with a push in the back.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:50 PM PST reply actions

Great
Blake's shot sucked all of the good juju out of that end of the court.  Our last couple of shots from Lamarcus and Roy have hit the back bracket.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:50 PM PST reply actions

We look so unflappable out there
Just business, taking care of the game.  I love this new attitude.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:51 PM PST reply actions

Wow
It's like the rim is magnetic.  The ball keeps hitting it.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:55 PM PST reply actions

We are ICE COLD
I'd prefer just being COLD AS ICE.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 6:56 PM PST reply actions

Every team makes a run
sometime in the game.  Even Minnesota.  We just need to withstand and then accelerate away again.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:56 PM PST reply actions

Nice Roy
This camera guy sucks there are a lot of times where I can't see the corners.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 6:57 PM PST reply actions

Yeah
You can tell these Minnesota guys aren't used to having to film shots from outside.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

Doleac is killing us
His bald BS keeps knocking the ball around.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 6:58 PM PST reply actions

Wow
Jefferson coming alive.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 6:59 PM PST reply actions

Uhm
How was that not a foul?

Reaching downwards against your opponent on an attempted block is always a foul. It's called reaching in.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 6:59 PM PST reply actions

Quick leaper
Didn't know that about him

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 7:00 PM PST reply actions

I wish the Minnesota commentators
wouldn't call Al Jefferson "Big Al".  That's just one word away from a South Park character I'm sure he wouldn't like being compared to.  That's all I think about every time they say it.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:00 PM PST reply actions

Worst team in the league
We need to work on not losing to them.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 7:01 PM PST reply actions

Oh yeah
Start missing free throws too.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:01 PM PST reply actions

Remember...
...it's the T-Wolves.

Having a complete floor is a major event for these guys.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

Well it must be nice to see
After they miss about 50 wide open jumpers.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 7:03 PM PST reply actions

Nice drive by Martell!
I love it when he does that!

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:04 PM PST reply actions

It hurts us so much when Joel's not in the game.
Love to see a stat of 2nd chance points with Joel in and with Joel out

by Fizbin on Jan 2, 2008 7:04 PM PST reply actions

Wait
Martell a Glen Rice clone? Who said that?

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 7:04 PM PST reply actions

This color guy
The Minny color guy gets on a subject and won't let go of it for 5 minutes.

The moment has passed man, move on!

by Replacement Level Poster on Jan 2, 2008 7:05 PM PST reply actions

Why doesn't
Martell do that more often? If anything it would make defenders play off him a little bit. That would give him more open shots.

That move was smooth.

by ryryslyry on Jan 2, 2008 7:05 PM PST reply actions

Don't know.
Many are the mysteries that manifest Martel.

by Fizbin on Jan 2, 2008 7:06 PM PST up reply actions

by soulja2boy on Jan 2, 2008 7:06 PM PST reply actions

Sure
but Minnesota would have to be absolutely foolish to do that.  Jefferson is a beast.  At some point, McHale is going to get tired of being the butt of the entire league.

by Diesel10 on Jan 2, 2008 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

Martell did it
He must have been listening.   Rice really liked that move to the basket by Martell as he made a short shot.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:07 PM PST reply actions

Corey Brewer
Needs to work on trimming that beard

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 7:07 PM PST reply actions

Antoine Walker
barely qualifies as a basketball player anymore.  Riley was right in Miami.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:11 PM PST reply actions

Ugh
This announcer "refs disrespecting us" thing is annoying. Even the Mike's aren't this bad.

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 7:12 PM PST reply actions

Ummmm...
I love 'em, but yeah they are.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

MN guys have a point
About Jack's drawn foul. Probably shouldn't have been called.

Still, smart play on Jack's part.

by Fizbin on Jan 2, 2008 7:13 PM PST reply actions

it was a bad call
Jarrett leaned into him and there was no real contact. Lame call.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:13 PM PST reply actions

James is a pro at getting that foul
Jack needs tot ake some pointers on that one.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:16 PM PST reply actions

Sergio should break him down
instead of needing a pick

Now, that foul on JJ33 i can take. the defender was on him.

in his career...according to him.

nice outlet pass by Outlaw
that's the smart play we need from him

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:20 PM PST reply actions

Sergio makes the easy pass
which isn't always the case
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:20 PM PST reply actions

Good hustle
by Channing Frye.   He really has emerged in the winning streak.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:20 PM PST reply actions

Jones a little too alone there
of course, travis could have made a better pass
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:21 PM PST reply actions

i can't watch Sergio shoot freethrows
he has done terrible this season, like 30% and with so few opportunities it always seems like he is doomed to hit no more than one.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:23 PM PST reply actions

on the bright side
1 for 2 raise his average. sigh.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:26 PM PST reply actions

Jack
instructs us how NOT to run a break.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:26 PM PST reply actions

that terrible pass
screwed him, he can't get up over one of there big guys. and he got the ball so late he had no other option.

by sergioFTW on Jan 2, 2008 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

Blazers have 16 point lead
and Sergio shooting two at the foul line.

Now is the time to really break the will and backs of Minni Wolves.   They are acting like they have lost already.   I hope we see the foot on the throat moves by the Blazers.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:27 PM PST reply actions

Blazers look like
they're just trying to get to the post-game meal now.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:27 PM PST reply actions

Awwww
Trout missed that one.  When he's not in rhythm there's no way the ball is going in.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:28 PM PST reply actions

Good to see LA
back in the game.   The jump shooting is not all that good tonight.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:28 PM PST reply actions

You could
put Josh and ONLY Josh in right now and we'd still win this game.

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

Green will be a good player in the league
for a long time.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

are saying the guys are too comfortable with the lead.   Time to bury these guys.

and Roy cannot hit a three.   He did make one once tonight right?

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:32 PM PST reply actions

I'm starting to get a bad feeling...
A little one, creeping up the back of my neck.

Somebody reassure me.

I agree.   Great and talented gals.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:34 PM PST reply actions

WTF?
Are they playing ratball out there?  Crush them!

by DonkeyShins on Jan 2, 2008 7:35 PM PST reply actions

Worst quarter ever
Good thing Minnesota is horribly inept.  Still, we could use rebounding.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

Outlaw is moving the ball
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

Yeah it is

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Tough stand
around the bucket there

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

THAT
is why we are glad we don't have Telfair. Stifling ball movement and resulting in a brick.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:37 PM PST reply actions

Terrible shooting and rebounding by our buys.
Thankfully we still are up 83 to 74.   Now 85.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:37 PM PST reply actions

How many times
Can Al Jeff move his pivot feet and not be called for a travel?

You ain't not John Travolta!

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 7:39 PM PST reply actions

I feel bad for how pathetic their team is

only the best of the best

by soulja2boy on Jan 2, 2008 7:40 PM PST reply actions

Are they going to make a new version
of this commercial next year, with Durant taking off an Oklahoma City uniform?

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:40 PM PST reply actions

I think
The NBA decided to stop calling travels. It's not really called. You see guys take more than 2 steps a lot of times as well.

See Dwayne Wade.

by Dheepan on Jan 2, 2008 7:40 PM PST reply actions

I believe...
...they are calling it 'creative pivoting' and are granting points for both style and difficulty a la skating - because that's what the NBA really needs - subjective ranking by Dick Buttons.

by DonkeyShins on Jan 2, 2008 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

I'm happy to see
JJ33 has 18 points.  Huzzah!

by DonkeyShins on Jan 2, 2008 7:40 PM PST reply actions

Does anyone else
NOT want Roy setting up to take charges with 2:00 left in an 11-point game?

by Dave on Jan 2, 2008 7:42 PM PST reply actions

get the ball to aldridge
Ladies and Gentlemen, Channing has arrived and the Buffet is open.

by jamon51 on Jan 2, 2008 7:43 PM PST reply actions

2 for 10
for the good guys.   They have relaxed and assumed they ahd won already.  No foot on the throat tonight.

2 more misses.   1min and 27 seconds.  Lead 10.

by OrygunRod on Jan 2, 2008 7:43 PM PST reply actions

Let Down Game
Luckily we were lucky to have Minnesota.

by robrun2 on Jan 2, 2008 7:45 PM PST reply actions

"It snaps a one game winning streak here at home"

by damir on Jan 2, 2008 7:45 PM PST reply actions
