It's a bit early to discuss this but it has already had a few glancing comments in other diaries so I think it's time to tackle it head on.
Assuming Jones and the Blazers play-out the rest of the season the way they played up to now, is there an obvious answer to what Jones does with his player option on next years contract? and is it obvious how the Blazers respond?
I think it would be obvious that he would want to stay a Blazer and the Blazers would want him to stay a Blazer. But Jones has outplayed his salary level and he may want to be a Blazer AND more money with several years extension. Will he opt out?
If he opts out and assuming James sees the potential for earning a ring in Portland, how much less would he be willing to take as a Blazer over a bigger offer elsewhere?
An extension would eat into any money the Blazers have available for signing free agents in 09. If he opts out, how much should the Blazers offer and for how many years?
I've seen the Blazers make comments that imply that their thinking is that Martel is the long term solution and Jone's long term contribution is in mentoring Martel. Comments like "Jones isn't here to take Martel's spot." Is there potential for James to overplay his hand in this?
I hope he stays a Blazer and exercising the player option does that for certain (baring a trade) so I hope he does that and spares me the suspense.
