Another post on the roster - or - why we'll see no trades

On the assumption that at least some folks out there think a little tweaking of the roster might be of benefit, who do you think we could add?

The rebounder & enforcer off the bench?

A starting PG?

A perimeter defender (who preferrably shoots three's)?

Let's not propose trading for Chris Paul or some other top player.  Try to stick with someone who might actually be available.

After a few minutes thought, I have trouble coming up with anybody.  There is also the little problem (for me at least) of deciding who we move to make room for someone new.

For example can you name someone who fit's the first need?  I don't think Karl Malone is coming out of retirement (nor Buck Williams).  Brian Grant's knees are toast.  Who out there fits the description?  David Lee definitely fits the rebounding part, but I have no idea if he does the latter.  Plus it appears Isiah is not totally bonkers, as he's refusing to listen to any deal that includes Lee.

Utah isn't going to let Millsap go.  There is Reggie Evans in Philadelphia, but do you really want to trade, say Channing Frye for Evans?  Danny Fortson anybody?  Didn't think so.  Going back to Utah there is Matt Harpring.  He might be an ok addition, but there is those nagging issues of why would the Jazz trade him and is it worth it to trade a young asset for an old one.

Right now, about the only guy I can think of who is a good rebounder and who make the punks backpedel like an All-Pro cornerback is Antonio "slow down Kevin, I want to talk to you" McDyess.  I don't see him being available, but he's the only one who seems to come even close to justifying giving up a couple of our guys for.

What do you think?  Any names out there you can think of that would make us a better team?

If there's a trade ...
it won't be to acquire a bench player.

If you really want some muscle off the bench, sign Kurt Thomas to the league minimum in the offseason.

If we need roster spots, I think the first move will be to buy out Raef Lafrentz. Unlike Miles, if we buy him out his salary will come off the books in time for us to sign free agents in 2009. Buying Miles out, on the other hand, would lock his salary into our cap for 09-10.

If KP REALLY wants some cap space in the summer of 2009, then he simply has to get rid of Miles' contract. With how Martell and Jones have been playing, I really think we have to keep those guys around. You could argue the same for Frye, who will fit perfectly with Oden.

When you look at it, I really don't think we have that many holes to fill on our team. We just need to wait for the players we have to develop a little further. Therefore, I believe if there's a trade to be made, it will not be to acquire more talent. We already have almost too much to know what to do with. The sole purpose of any trades now or in the offseason will be to get rid of Miles' contract. Does that mean packaging him with Sergio and a draft pick? Probably. But that's the only way I see us getting under the salary cap for the summer of 2009.

I say we trade Jack and Green
since Rudy's coming over, there really isn't room for a combo gaurd who can't make a layup. And we already have our developing pg in Sergio, we don't need Green. I really don't think we need much in return. We have GO/PRYZ/FRYE at center, LA/FRYE/TROUT at power forward, JONES/OUTLAW/WEBSTER at small forward, WEBSTER/ROY/RUDY at shooting gaurd, and BLAKE/ROY/SERGIO at PG.

Trade Sergio, not Jack
Jarrett Jack is an integral part of this
team. The insane hatred is unjustified. He's
tough, is willing to go hard to the hoop and
finishes pretty well. He's a great FT shooter
and knows how to draw the foul when were not
hitting shots.
How do you know Rudy will be able to get to the rim in the NBA ? The Euro league is soft and
Rudy the "Savior" hasn't played a minute.
Perhaps he'll be the real deal, but Sergio is
a TO machine, is a terrible FT & FG shooter,
isn't physical and can't play defense. Trade him
while he has some value. If fans want us to
wait until Rudy gets here, because he wants to
play with Sergio, well ... Keep JJ, he's a key
piece to this team.
It's GO time !

I don't hate Jack
But I would really be surprised if he's here next year. Seriously, Rudy is tops in a tough league, that makes him better than Jack in my opinion when it comes to SG. We'll see though

Rudy will be a rookie!
No way he starts and may not even break into the rotation next year. This team is about winning and Rudy will need to earn his minutes.

Maybe the most awesome athlete in 2007 draft is Julius Wright taken by New Orleans 12th I think. He is doing just fine warming a spot on the bench after being the best player on Kansas' team last year. Likewise Arron Afflalo in Detroit after taking his UCLA team to the final four two years in a row. Rookies need time and if they are playing immediately they are playing on a bad team (ala Seattle).

I hope TJ Ford comes back super healthy
So we can swoop in and steal Calderon away!

If we want rebounding bruiser off the bench, we got Jor-el Pryzbilla.  We don't need shooters.  Maybe a better playmaker alongside Roy, but Blake is decent enough if one can't be found.  Perhaps Sergio develops into something more useful and less potentially useful.

We gotta find a spot for Rudy, the #1 draft pick, and while that ain't small potatoes it isn't gonna be too hard.  Buyout Raef, a small trade, who knows.  Only KP and God know (assuming they aren't one and the same).  I can't figure who'd I let go, but Green and McRoberts are definately the cheapest options if we just cut someone.

My point is, I do not think we need to add anything other than a healthy Oden.  Hopefully Trout and Webby continue their development, and then get all 10 fingers sized for rings.

May I point out the question is ...
... can you name anybody out there you think could help the Blazers (and who realistically might be available).

Only Mort and bfan answered the question.  I agree with them both - I don't think there is anything we need to do.  Part of the reason for this diary was to also demonstrate that even if you did want to tweak the roster some, I don't think there is anybody out there that you could argue with be a distinct improvement over what we now have.

bfan - Kurt Thomas did come to mind. I think Seattle holds on to him for the rest of the season so they get the salary relief.  If we sign him over the summer rather than trade for him, then we have to cut somebody.  He falls into the Harpring category in my opinion.  You wouldn't mind adding him, but question if it's worth trading young for old.

Mort - I came away from the Toronto game very impressed by Calderon.  Enough so to consider Swapping Sergio and our 1st round pick.  But then I remember that while Calderon is by far the better player now, he also has 5 years on Sergio.  I think I'll be patient.

No trades needed
Jack ... I just don't get what people dislike about Jarret.  Like most of our team, he needs to grow a bit.  But when we are making deep playoff runs, his ability to get to the rim or the foul line is critical.

I love watching the motion offense we are running.  But I am always a little scared to count on it the playoffs, because it's an offense that degenerates into poor perimiter shots very easily.

If we are missing shots and the D collapses on the paint, our entry passes get that much tougher.  And if you can't get an post pass to LMA or GO, you need some penetration.  On this team, thats roy, jack, and sergio.  And sergio ain't gonna be the go-to 4th qtr of game 5 guy any time soon.

We need Jack.

The only players I'd be okay with seeing go are
DMiles, Raef, and possible Green.  But as Nate is so high on green, I'd like to see him stick around another season.

Many people have pointed to a doubt that Nate and KP are on the same page re Sergio.  If that's true, the argument is Sergio can't play the style Nate wants.  It certainly seems this year that the half court is our strength, with Martell off curls, the pick and roll/pop, etc.

If Sergio isn't going to earn Nate's trust, or be unable to flourish in our style of play, I think that adds value to TGreen, and we should at least let him try to break into the rotation.

That said, I'm not too interested in seeing sergio let go.  How incredible would it be to have to playoff-style lockdown halfcourt motion offense dialed in, then have a second unit able to out run n gun anyone with sergio whipping passess off everything sight?  So versatile and impossible to scheme defensively with that kind of attack.

I don't do any trades during this season...
unless I am blown away by an offer.

There has to be some trades this summer, we have 15 current roster players, and at the minimum 1 player coming in next year from our #1 pick. But most accounts say Rudy will come over as well, making that 2 players. We could trade the #1, but I don't think that is what KP is going to do, unless it is to get a better #1 pick.

I see Jack, Frye, Reaf, Green and Mcrob as all being trade canidates. Miles too if he can show he is healthy enough to pass a physical.

To answer the OP question, there is no one I would want to pick up this year for this team. I want to end the year with the same bunch we started, then make decisions based on that.

My prediction?
Frye and Jack are gone next year, Rudy comes over and we draft a big man. Our 2nd rounders will be traded or used on euros, and our other euros will stay over seas. Jones will be resigned to a decent contract but less than what Kapono got, because Kapono wasn't worth it, and Jones I believe will want to stay here in PDX as long as Portland offers him a fair deal.

Oden/Pryz
Lma, Outlaw
Martel, Jones
Roy, Rudy
Blake, Sergio

Those are out 10 rotation players next year imo. But we will see.

Not a bad stab
But do you think Outlaw can cut it as a backup PF against some of the more physical teams in the league?

Oden erases some of my concern, but I'm still not sold on losing Frye as a back up to LMA, or Jack, for that matter.

It's gonna be a FUN off-season.

enforcers?
Craig Smith, Jason Maxiell, Chris Richards all could be had for pretty cheap i think.  all of them are junkyard type players
Travis Outlaw drops the sledgehammer on Daequan Cook for a dunk so vicious, it's illegal in 48 states.

I don't see Minny letting Smith go, nor
Joe Dumars trading Maxiell.  Cheis Richards was a guy who intrigued me during the NCAA tournament last year.  We might bre able to pry him from McHale.

All we really need is:
Someone who can eat up some fouls for our centers. Joel gets into foul trouble early every single game, and they usually aren't bad fouls either. If we could somehow re-sign joel, as two seperate players so that way he could have twice as many fouls to give, that woulde be our best option. Other than that, I really don't want to give anyone up, but that seems to be where our trouble is. Once Joel goes out, we don't have any strong interior presence. While I know this will be fixed next year, this year that would be the only postion where we really need shoring up. That said, i don't know of any free agents that would help in that situation. So yea sign JOel as two different players, and just have him change jersey's to signify he is another player, halfway through the game. That would be super helpful. :)

Dale Davis is available
My hope is that Portland's younger guys show enough value that KP can convince someone to take Darius with them and some draft picks.  Otherwise, I think he is here for the long haul.

I think the Blazers have a lot of attractive players and will have a lot of GM's calling to deal this off season.  It is going to be an interesting summer.

I have no player in mind
who is both available and fits or improves this team this year. I do think we might make a trade for the right draft pick but that most likely takes place in the draft.

I am quite happy to roll with what we have. Every reasonable goal the Blazers might have had (once Greg was lost) for this year is being achieved. The team is learning and growing and supporting each other and maybe most importantly winning back the fans.
