CP or DW? Neither!

What happens next season or the season after regarding Steve Blake? We all know just how important the PG posistion is in the NBA. But with Roy playing the way that he has, do we need a Chris Paul or a Deron Williams? Wouldn't someone like Paul or Deron want the ball in the fourth quarter? Roy has SO FAR proven himself and us that he can create shots for others just as efficently as CP3 and DW. What I believe that Kevin Pritcherd(?- or KP) should look for is someone who can consistenly make shots from 15-23ft shots, defend PG'S and SG'S and create shots for others with the understanding that when it comes to the fourth quarter, IT'S ROY'S BALL! Is there anyone out there that fits my critera? Steve Blake might very well be the guy that fits the bill in the present but can he be a Championship type PG that we need? It remains to be seen but if the chemistry of the team improves greatly with the addition of BIG O, then our expectations of the 'PG' wouldn't need to be so high. By the way, it seems that O.J Mayo's stock appears to be dropping and 'might' be available at #14. At present he is at #10 on NBADraft.net

I wouldn't touch Mayo
with a ten-foot pole.  No way does he fit the culture, no matter if he fell to fourteenth or fortieth.

Re: our PG situation.  "someone who can consistenly make shots from 15-23ft shots, defend PG'S and SG'S and create shots for others with the understanding that when it comes to the fourth quarter, IT'S ROY'S BALL".  I think you just described our incumbent starter, Vinny B.

I agree
His team will lose and he'll still get his 20 point, he already has an NBA game.

To me
Our guard spots are taken already.

Roy
Blake
Rudy
Sergio

jack will be traded, and those 4 will play for us when we make our runs at championships.  Just my look at the future.

Blake is a perfect fit to play beside Roy, and Rudy/Sergio in the 2nd unit is going to be fun to watch.  Good times are ahead.

The Chicago model
with Michael Jordan comes to mind.

They tried playing him at point guard at one time early in his career and even though he was very effective with the ball in his hands he still was most comfortable playing the SG with John Paxson or Steve Kerr playing the point - players who could pass him the ball, hit the outside shot and play good enough defense.

You might hate me for this but
if we could get Jose Calderon he would be the man. I would pick him as a  complement player any day. He is a straight baller and his going to be unselfish, always do what it takes to win and wont demand the ball rather get it to where it needs to be or hit a jumper when needed.

Yeah I agree we will never pick up CP3 or D-will, CP3 because it would be counter intuitive if you look at Brandon's roll, its one or the other. D-Will basically the same thing and more so, he is in the same division as us, so that would never happen. The blazers will use their extra money to guarantee guys like martell, roy, LMA, Oden to stay and then with whats left bring in a vet or two with clutch playoff experience.

Roy is our man.

José Calderón
José Calderón is close to the historic NBA ratio in assists/turnovers with 6.2 (record I think 6.15), followed by 3.86 CP3, 3.58 CB, 3.28 SN, 2.83 JK. He´s a very very good team player (best PG in last summer Eurobasket, far ahead of Tony Parker) 26 years old, the Raptors could hide sometime behind TJ Ford. TJ injured several times this year, the secret is gone. Plus José Calderón is a great person, never talking bad about anyother, picking up his teammates when they miss.... You can´t heard one bad word of José in Toronto but many good things. They love him. Raptors GM said they will match any offer he would receive and his coach and teammates defend this days that he deserves to have a place in all-star. Is woul be great but ... how can we get him?.  I hope next year Rudy will arrive and helps to Sergio´s explosion as a player Nate may give more time.

Have you seen
sergio and rudy play together live?  Just wondering.  I was thinking the same thing might help sergio break through.  If they have that kind of chemistry, they might look good with outlaw, pryz, someone else in the second unit (for a while at least).
Blessed are the flexible, for they never get bent out of shape.

Roy allows us
to run combo guards like JJack and this awesome from a cap standpoint as those guys are a dime a dozen. We just need one that can bring the ball up the floor under pressure (seemingly a weak spot for Jack) then hand it off to Roy. It seems like if Jack works on his d and his open court ball handling he could be really good in this role so I am not  quite sold on letting him walk if he can be extended at a reasonable rate. Kopponen might fit this mold as well, but it is hard to tell much from a guy who plays in the basketball mecca of Finland. Summer league should be awesome this year.

Steve Blake will retire a Blazer.
Write that down, fire up the presses and set that in stone. That is a fact.

Nate and KP knew that what he could do and now that their plan is coming to fruition, all of us fans are beginning to see what KP knew a long time ago, that Steve Blake is the perfect PG for this team. I imagine that, yeah in the back of his mind that in 2009 KP wanted to take a run at CP but your mind sometimes fantasizes about what if occurs, but barring a miracle, I dont see taht happening.

I belive that CP and Roy would florish together, dont get me wrong, but I am not sure that A: we will be ablt to get him and B: that Allen will want to sign CP for max $$ and then when Roy, LMA and Oden are off their rookie contracts that we will have 4 max players. Although I wonder what will happen when Roy, LMA and Oden do come up for a contract renewal, what they will want, max type money? Looking at the Pistons payroll the highest paid player is

Rasheed $12.5
Billups 10
Hamilton 9.75
Prince 8.6

So I would imagine that it would go

if we got CP $16
Roy 13
LMA 11
Oden 11
Joel 6
Webster 5
Outlaw 5
Jones 5
Frye 5
Blake 5
Sergio 3
Rudy 2
Kopo? 1
Freeland 1
Green? 1
McBob? 1
Rookie 1
rookie 500k

That is $76.5 mill WITHOUT CP
$92.5 with CP

Granted the cap will be higher when the "Portland Three Party" is up for renewal but not by the $20-25 mill needed to get us under the cap.

As for Sergio, I am not down on him, I only wish he could come and play with us for a full summer and not have to run around with the Spanish national team. I just wonder how he would do if he just got to rest for a few months and then came back early and started playing with us for the full summer. He still is just in his 2nd year and is 21 also so he has much to learn still. Next year will be another lost summer as soon as Sergio gets off from the Blazers he will probably be gone to practice with the Spanish national team until the Olympics are over at the end of August, same with Rudy. I hope thaqt when he is able to get a full summer of practice in he will "get it" and the Sergio we saw in Denver last year will emerge from his shell and we will have a hell of a player.

ball time
Honestly...while it doesnt seem like CP3 or DWill would be a good fit for roy cuz of their need for the ball...many people didnt expect the Celtics to be this good with so many established stars already.  However on the flip side when the Lakers starting 5 had Malone and Payton with Shaq and Kobe...that team failed.  So in a sense it could work...but I'd rather not take the chance and disrupt the chemistry.  Jose Calderon however would be awesome.

by Philthyanimal on Jan 14, 2008 12:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Sergio and Rudy together
I only could see them together in national Spanish team, because played in different teams in the league, and there was chemistry for sure. I think Sergio has suffered and have lost self-confidence adapting his play to NBA, arriving so young and with a coach like Nate, who doesn´t seem to like funny. That's maybe tough now, and worse if he lose his place in national team -Ricky Rubio is a threat for him and Carlos Cabezas, only José Calderón is now better between Spanish PGs-. But easy way is not ever the best way. Mentally could be completely different having Rudy next to him, playing the veteran´s role with his friend. I think they will work very well in a second unit, as someone have post.

Nate is being hard on Sergio this year.
He wants to teach him to avoid turnovers and play defense.  Next year, when Sergio has learned these things and is playing with Rudy I expect Nate will let Sergio play to his style some more.  I am very excited about them playing together.

by EnglandDan on Jan 14, 2008 1:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Ohhhh no, I´m a Sergio´s fan
Thank you, EnglandDan. It´s true, a bad defender will destroy the work of his teammates and nobody like turnovers, especially some kind of them, I completely agree and I am happy Sergio is pushed to improve that way, but for real too that the third player with more turnovers is Jason Kid and the fourth is Steve Nash, and I haven´t seen Sergio playing big time to see what happened. Sergio can´t be compared with those veterans and maybe never will be at so high level, what I mean is he will be a very good PG who plays with some fantasy and made a mistake coming so soon to the NBA. As the soldier Nate wants he has Steve Blake, a player I like so much . I fear the changes Nate wants of Sergio mean there´s no more Sergio, I hope they find the way to adjust both ways, Sergio´s and Nate´s, and make that work. I think next year will be the time to get done, hopping Nate and Sergio won´t act as father and soon in car practicing. I´m, of course, the Sergio´s fan I´m supposed as a Spanish blazer fan. Not very original, not too much credit, but you know...

Aw, come on guys!
Tom is messing with you amlmart1!  We like to joke about all European players smoking.  Seriously, it's great to have you at blazersedge.  And if Rudy and Sergio end up making magic in the Blazers' backcourt, that'd be great to see.

I'm not being mean
My friend's girlfriend was from Spain and I met her and her brother, neither one of them smoked.  But I was wondering if there is some truth to the smoking stereotype.  If I knew what he smoked, I could make a nice care package for Rudy when he arrives next year.

They call Sergio "Spanish Chocolate" so I was wondering about Spanish chocolates. Another poster, who's no longer here, called Sergio and Rudy "Cigarette smoking Euros" so I was wondering about that too.  Sorry if I sounded like a jerk.

I think I'm 11 hours different, 2 from Oregon
I have a really easy job and they limit our internet access, so I only check my e-mail, go to Blazers Edge, and ESPN.  Anything else is either blocked or would get me in trouble.  Good for me but bad for everyone else here.  Also when I get home, my wife does not get home for 2 or 3 more hours, so I walk me dog and hang out here.

Tom always kids
He was serious once, but no one believed him and hell almost froze, so he went back to his joking ways.

Just shoot rubber bands at him if he jokes too much.

"Notsosorry TominHawaii".
Don´t worry about me. He´s really funny. I´ll try to get the pace and hope I´ll give him some material in my posts to joke again. We say here that people laugh when a man falls and don´t when a donkey falls (oh sorry, I´m tempting again "Tomihawk"). And was a fan of P.G. Wodehouse and now I´m a fan of Tomiinwawaii.
