Canzano is back on the hooch

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf?/base/sports/119008233182630.xml&a mp;coll=7&thispage=1

this piece is appalling. can canzano not find something to complain about once?! i swear to god. the blazers could go 73-9 and canzano would have some awful thing to write about a player or the franchise.

the blazers are not the nixon administration and he is not bob woodward. not every story needs to blow the top off another insignificant mis-step by the franchise or the league.

not only is he eroding the momentum even more than oden's knee already has, he's second-guessing decisions and actions which he had absolutely no problem with before.

i think he is a weak journalist who is swayed by the whims of public opinion. two months ago: miracle. one microfracture surgery later: blazers = satan.

and at the end of the day...
your rant and link to his article just encouraged me to click on it and read it, two things that both oregonlive and JC require to keep his type of shtik going.  You've inadvertantly furthered his subjective style of reporting on the Blazers.

Though painstakingly annoying at times, JC is still harmless in the wider picture of the Blazers organization and sports reporting in general.  He's like the perpetually drunk uncle that comes to visit and all he does is b....er, complain.

And Leeroy... easy does it...

it's a slap in the face to the fans who've stuck with the team during the jailblazers era.it's also a slap in the face to guys like aldridge*roy. 2 guys who most nba franchises would love to represent in their community.it's pathetic and for all you people who bashed me and welcomed them aboard shame on all of you.because leeroy is right now they're scuttering like rats.leeroy my man told me about the fallout.he works in the blazers sales department.you're right it's a lot larger than the blazers are letting on.good job by finding it out leeroy great job big leeroy.

Much ado about nothing ...
Per usual, there's no fire in the smoke Canzano's blowing.

I agree with his point about the Blazers being open about season ticket sales post-draft, but then closing down on that information post-injury. That's a bit offputing.

But the Blazers are a financial organization, and they have the right to seek whatever deal will give them the best revenue for their TV rights. If Comcast did that, then great for them. And Comcast has every right to try to convince customers to come on board in the meantime. It's good publicity for them to be able to claim that they are the sole owners of the Blazers' TV rights. But it's foolish to think they won't eventually distribute those rights to other providers once the season rolls around. They would stand to lose A LOT of revenue by not doing so, because not everyone is going to just jump ship from their providers to go over to Comcast ...

And to suggest that the Blazers and Comcast are doing the public wrong by trying to get the most out of their products? Well that's just silly, but unfortunately par for the course for Canzano ...

by bfan on Sep 18, 2007 9:45 AM PDT reply actions

He is right
about his concerns re. Comcast. He has some valid points about the Blazers' lack of transparency. You guys who are berating him (as I occasionally do) remind me of the press and the public in the days following 9-11. "Don't say anything negative that might indicate that you are anything but a true believer in the sanctity of the official Word". Why is questioning some of the decisions and behaviors of this organization seen as disloyal instead of as advocating for our own interests.

by crakarjack on Sep 18, 2007 11:14 AM PDT reply actions

I agree...
Canzano is not just making something out of nothing here.  He is sticking up for every blazer fan who has to use a satelite provider.  Comcast is clearly trying to scare people into switching cable providers to ensure they will have full access to blazer games.  It isnt unreasonable for JC to ask why the blazers are being so quiet about this situation.  Lets not just jump on anyone who says something negative about the blazers.

ps  I dont like Canzano, I just dont find much fault in this particular article.

Tell you what, go to any other team in the NBA
And pretend you're going to tell them how to do their cable packages, and what information they are going to release about season tix and watch them laugh at you.

This is all fall-out from the Oden 'scandal' and I expected more from Blazer fans.

Thus the f-word, some of 'us' are making me ill.

aghhh
how sensitive some bloggers are are'nt they dave. i'll say it again for those who missed what i said this morning about j.canzano.he's a good friend of mine.and he's really harmless.but why he and the nation were miffed because of all the sudden you had people rushing the court when they took oden.where the hell where these people when the blazers had bad charecter players.and the ? is where will they be by 2010.like j.allen said last night on j.c. show.if you people don't think the nation is enjoying this oden debacle.espn was basically giddy the way they covered.it was like that old progressive commercial.the 1 when the guy is wacthing the game.and his wife asked him what insurance you've picked, and he said none.his wife handed him the phone and the commentor said noooo he dropped the ball.well as time goes by,it'll be fascinating to see if the buzz will still with this team.and as for the cable situation, damn you guys out there get it rough.damn they treat you guys like that.you would think the blazers*comcast would embrace you guys.instead a potential power play is in the works.i believe that oden is out for the season.it can go either way.they can take their time with it.or do the right thing and just provide the games to everyone in the state of oregon.if they do the former rather than the latter they would save face.and most importantly have the good faith of the blazers faithful.

Lighten up
I disagree with Canzano as much as the next person, but his commentary on the satellite situation was spot on.  The Blazers are building momentum and there is room on the wagon for everyone.  They let themselves get into a position where a third party will dictate whether 20% (or whatever) of fans can even see their product.  The Blazers get paid the same either way, but more fans equals a bigger TV deal next time, increased merchandise sales, and a larger box office take.  On the surface, without knowing more, this seems like a bad precedent for the team to set.

On Oden's knee situation, I'm reminded of a quote:
"The progress of the world waits not for perfect men"

by Engineering Problem on Sep 18, 2007 4:30 PM PDT reply actions

another good Oden related quote:
"The best things in life are worth waiting for"

Fire him!!
Isn't he employed by the blazers these days?  He is just a complainer and we are growing tired of it.  He is a small town reporter seeing Portland become bigger than him...which is why he is shouting louder about senseless topics these days.  As far as refunds, most of those season tickets sold after the draft lottery, but before the draft...before we drafted Oden.  Those people asking for the refunds are the "goofs" which is constantly referenced here.  If they don't want to watch the blazers because a 19 year old suffered a major injury, they should donate the season tickets to some non-profit and write off that expense...as opposed to complaining about the front office.  Anybody employed by the blazers that is complaining about the front office should be fired.  The NBA, the trailblazers is big business.  I am here for the basketball.  As long as there is a reason to pack the Rose Garden, I don't care how transparent they are.

have'nt i've been saying this since the day after the lottery.great post dude.leeroy broke it yesterday and my boy in sales department for the blazers told me in confidence,it's a lot more than they're letting on.you should know my jump in the pool theory.unfortunately your right.if i cared so much about oden,i would'nt have redone the contest or pay mucho $$$$$$ for hopefully great seats.like i said clonigro about 2 weeks ago dude,i love the name on the front of the jersey.not the names on the back of the jersey.i love the team colors not the bandwagon team or players of the media's choice.that's what make us diehard fans so unique. oden is hurt deal with it,live with it.it is what it is.i love the PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS,not g.oden, b.roy or l.aldridge.remember team over bandwagon fans and players all the time book it!!!!

I don't care about this subject
Because I am in Hawaii and the Blazers apparently do not care about my ability to watch every game.  But I will say that I have always hated Canzano.  He thinks he's Bill Brasky and there is only one Bill Brasky.
If I had an extra hug, I would give it to you.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
