Not Really....
I'm not looking that far ahead, nor do I have unreasonable expectations for the next couple of years. I'm guessing 35-38 wins next year and I'll have to see next year before I "anticipate" the following year.

Also, after the telfair and webster picks, I'll have to see Oden play for a while before I put him in the class of centers you listed. I don't consume much of the hype surrounding draft picks.

Portland simply has too many unknowns and holes in their roster to talk championship yet in anything more then theoretical terms. How will all the youth develop together? Just how good are Frye and Jones? Is Webster a bust? Will Outlaw continue to improve? Are any of Oden, Aldridge, and Roy injury prone? Will either Jack or Sergio turn into a good PG? Will Portland actually have substantial cap space in 2009 and will it be used effectively?

As Dave pointed out in his most recent column, right now it's enough that the team/franchise is moving in a positive direction....my unreasonable expectations won't kick in till the fall of 2009 at the earliest.

Disappointed? Heck No!
fatty, I will wait for that Pioneer Square Parade as long as it takes. I am a Blazers fan - if these guys weren't on our team, if Pritchard was the lamest GM in the league, if our startin 5 was Telfair-Dixon-Miles-Kryapa-Godzilla, I would still be a Blazer fan. Unlike many of the Goofs, I even loved the Blazers during the JR Rider times, the Rasgeed Wallace and Damon Stoudamire years - LOVED those squads!

So yeah, I'll wait. I'll buy a goof t-shirt and be sitting in the 300 level with all my bandwagon friends. Eatin' a $6 hot dog, drinkin' a $8 silver bullet. I'll wait through the wins, through the losses.

I'll be there baby, come what may - Book it!

Disappointed?
maybe a little if it takes 10 years to win a title, but really it would depend on the path we are on each year. Like Moldorf said, I will judge my disappoint or approval from year to year, as long as I feel the team is improveing each year then I will be as excited as I am right now.

But ya, I want to see a title within 10 years, so waiting till the whole 10 years is up, would be hard to swallow, especially if we had some heart breaking seasons on the way.  But hey, that is life as a fan, nothing is for sure, no future, no matter how bright, is set in stone.

Six years
... until we get in range to contend for a title. Oden will be 25, Roy and Aldridge in their primes. Of course, by then, the Cavs may be LeBron's Buzzsaw, Toronto may be Bosh's IHOP (International House of Players), etc.  But by then the Blazers should be in the hunt. Anything before that would involve a huge amount of 1) luck or 2) money or 3) both.

by barryj on Aug 8, 2007 8:04 AM PDT reply actions

Not at all.
Winning a title is great.  But most teams fail to win a title.

I would like my team to be competative. Perferrably enough so that they win more games than they lose and have at least some chance of competing for a title.  Barring that, I want them to be guys I like to watch and root for.

Why I'm almost giddy about Portland is because they have guys I like to root for (Blake, Roy, Pyrzbilla, Jack) plus guys that at least give me hope that they will be competative (Roy, Aldridge and Oden).   It's also why I hate to see us lose guys like Ime (he fits both categories in my opinion) and even guys like Freddie Jones, Dickau and Dixon (they're in the first category - two local guys & a Terp).

by timg56 on Aug 8, 2007 8:12 AM PDT reply actions

truth be told,
I'm a goof.

I only became aware of you guys when Nate landed there from my town up north, and prior to that, I kinda liked Walton and much appreciated Clyde and Luke. But in a distant, uninvested sort of way.

Then you got my home town fav, a guy I'd watched in high school and college, and enjoyed rooting for immensely, in Mr. Roy.

I liked the little bit I knew about that kid from Texas too, but I didn't really know much about him.

Somewhere around the middle of last season the name of some ex Kansas guard was being tossed around. He had both Larry Brown and San Antonio bloodlines as well. Intriguing. I started to pay a small bit of attention.

When you guys hit the lottery, I began watching to see if you'd go flash or substance with the pick. That was a fun telenovela. I thought you guys did it right.

So here I am now. An unrepentant jailblazer hater and still somewhat casual fan, watching from a bit of emotional distance. I'm thinking this all makes me GOOFy. I prefer to think of myself as Pritchafied.

In any case, I think that there are several more Pritch steps still to be taken before words like dynasty and champion are anything more than fun machinations. And I still think that it's PA, Kevin and Nate that make the Blazers promising, and that Oden simply accelerated a predestined timeline.

With one more fairly big trade and continuity in the core group, on and off the court, the next two seasons will make the Blazers an elite team.

I define that as a team still full of promise at the end of the regular season and being among the three or four favorites to reach the championships.

Candidly, for Nate's and Brandon's sakes. that's good enough for me. I value smart, classy highly competitive team first play and great role models off the court more than rings.

Rings would simply be desert. I'll happily take Dallas/Phoenix/San Antonio type consistent excellence and live with the lucky/unlucky breaks  that determine who gets it all in any particular year especially if my son wore a Roy jersey with both of us being proud in a way Iverson and Kobe will never work for his Dad, and Nate and Ime jerseys lack the necessary cachet for him.

Ack a GOOF!
You sir, are the worst person in the world. fatty told me so.

by Jumbo on Aug 8, 2007 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice post man
I appreciate the honesty. I've loved my blazers since I was old enough to realize what was going on with the guys on TV and why my dad listened to the radio all the time. Two for Larue! Kiki Vandewheghe in the corner, Darnell Valentine slashing the lane. I might be crazy but I have some faint memory of Kermit Washington playing too but that is all a bit hazy. So if I'm a goof I guess I was so far ahead of my time as to be a Goof pre-Oden Conception.

That being said as much as Roy winning ROY was a bummer and an awesome thing (Bummer cause I missed ALL of last season due to lots and lots of personal changes and upheavals DOH!!)

I was still only starting to pay attention again when Roy was in the running for it. Then we got the #1 pick and I heard the whole Durrant/Oden debate. I youtubed them both and was absolutely mesmerized by Oden. Durrant looked like yet another flashy and highscoring phenom. Oden seemed to be dripping in championship sweat. I'm sorry but you have to be really distant not to be excited about landing the big fella. After watching youtube a ton and reading alot about last season I've come to appreciate Roy's game the most. I think he will probably be the least mega star of the three and might just be on the cusp year after year for all-star status. Roy though fits the model of the kind of guy I always loved the best. He has the passion and love of the game that Kersey had combined with the assassin like ice water in the veins of a Porter or Steve Smith. I love that so Roy is my guy and fatty will be getting me a black home jersey when we go 41 and 15.

That being said I absolutely love Oden's attitude he is such a goof ball and seems like a sweet guy. I think the blazers will be in the WCF MUCH faster then fatty thinks depending on seeding that year.

I think the long term nemesis for Portland is clearly Utah and I think that is our team to beat. They are already really really good and are young enough they will be better by the time Portland is rolling. That being said I think Portland goes round 2 or deeper starting no later then 2010 and they can go to WCF or even finals as early as 2010. If they haven't hit finals by 2014 I will be very worried because the team might not be able to suck it up and work it out for 6-7 years without someone wanting a trade. I will always be by and for the Blazers. I appreciate everyones realism but I see Portland go further faster than most think we will be a 4-5 seed by 2010 book that!

I can take all the time in the world
I've stuck with them through the bad, holding season tickets, so I won't run off even if they don't win a title within 10 years.  What I do want to see is continued improvement (either in wins or direction).  What I hope is that we become forces to be reckoned with within about 4 years (aka not title winners, but serious competition in the west), we may bounce around in that zone for a number of years.  Though I think we'll be making title runs sooner, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't win one until sometime between 2015-2018, and if we don't even by 2018, I'll be OK, I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun getting to that point regardless.

by drawingjeremy on Aug 8, 2007 8:30 AM PDT reply actions

I'll be disappointed...
...not because right now I feel like they have a good shot at a title, but because I think this team is going to be a contender for several years.  And if they're a contender for several years and fail to win a title, it means a lot of heartbreaking losses (see Trailblazers, Portland, 1990s).

But you know what?  I'll take a slew of game 7 losses in the conference finals over a decade of irrelevance.

all I can say is...
Preach it brother. That's what I love about P-town we have a long LONG illustrious history of being way WAY bigger fish then we have a right to be for such a small market. We will get a ring in the next 7-8 years barring armageddon or major injury/trade of the big 3. Even if we don't win we will be fun to watch. I don't mind the half court as long as I like the guys. If a team plays like Phoenix or early 90's blazers the guys can be a bit more suspect ie 99' blazers and still be fun to watch. Get me some decent guys who love the game LMA, ROY. And I can watch the slow bump and grind.

50 years living in the greatest country EVER. Yet still haven't found perfection. Oh yes, we have 1 NBA title that can best be explained as a magical moment (closest thing to nirvanna).

Now just thrilled to know we will most likely have another go at it man, ain't that enough?

As far as I'm concerned
the Blazers don't need to win a title. Ever.

Of course, I'm not a fan of the team, so no surprises there.

But I do live in Portland and I love watching NBA hoops. Last year, I wound up making several trips to the Rose Garden, more than I'd made in any of the other five seasons I've lived here (I usually just show up for the Knick game) At first, it was because I bought one of those crazy-cheap ticket deals they were offering. But by season's end, I was buying tickets to individual contests. Although they didn't win many games, I found myself drawn in by the many compelling storylines: the continued development of Roy and Aldridge; Ime Udoka's against-all-odds roster spot and subsequent emergence as an every game starter; Sergio's dazzling, barely-under-control play off the bench; and Randolph's resurgent offensive game and watching the rest of the team struggling to figure out how to coexist with the "Zach Hole."

In short, I found the team highly entertaining, albeit in a soap opera-ish kind of way. The outcomes of the contests never mattered to me as much as seeing how those different narrative threads would develop. In a way, I was saddened when the Blazers selected GO because now the Blazers will likely become "The Greg Oden Show"; the focus of the team's strategy - in both its marketing and on-court style of play - will come to be largely dominated by Oden. And while that may ultimately result in a championship, it seems just a little less interesting; more conventional, somehow. (Conversely, I think selecting Durant would have generated some much more compelling storylines, at least from this spectator's standpoint)

And, also: I suspect all of those cheap ticket packages from last year are now gone out the window.

by fatty on Aug 8, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

As a recovering Knicks fan myself...
...I'm surprised to see you tut-tutting an offense built around a dominant big man. Were you complaining about that when the Knicks consisted of Patrick Ewing and four guys who passed the ball to Patrick Ewing?

That said, I don't think the Blazers will ever really be the Greg Oden Show. First of all, this year we're going to be the LaMarcus Aldridge show. Secondly, I would be surprised if Greg led the team in points for the forseeable future. He'll come in 2nd or 3rd, for sure, but I think Brandon and LaMarcus are going to score the bulk of our points for a long time.

by Jumbo on Aug 8, 2007 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not tut-tutting it
I understand that building around a dominant big man is likely the Blazers' best shot for a title.

But as I wrote in my post, I don't really care if the Blazers ever hang another banner from the Rose Garden rafters. My interest in the Blazers was piqued by all the interesting storylines that developed last season as the team and its players worked to establish an identity. To an outside observer like me, "team built around dominant big man" just seems so much more run-of-the-mill.

And, of course I didn't mind watching it when the Knicks did it with Ewing. My interest in that case was to see New York win a title, after all.

Playoffs v. Title
I'll lose patience if the Blazers do not make the playoffs by 2009-2010. That's somewhat soon, but I think they ought to be able to do it by then, with the turnover/injuries that will occur in some of the "older teams." The main reason I'll lose patience is that the NBA regular season is often completely  unwatchable... and occurs during the college and high school basketball season. Why watch a bunch of 30 year old dudes stand around and play one-on-one, in a glorified pick-up game at the Y, when I can watch high school or college games where every possession matters?

As long as the Blazers are in the play-offs or competing for a playoff spot, I'll be interested. I would never lose patience are lose interest just because they didn't win the title.

Thanks
I'm starting a collection of cliche anti-NBA talking points. Do you mind if I borrow "Why watch a bunch of 30 year old dudes stand around and play one-on-one, in a glorified pick-up game at the Y"? I'll give you credit.

by Jumbo on Aug 8, 2007 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

No problem
It's all yours. I won't even take credit for it. But seriously, I'm a college basketball fan first and when I turn on a NBA game in January... I'm almost always shocked, literally shocked at the lack of effort displayed. Occasionally there are some good games in the middle of the season, but usually the games don't grab my attention any more than the 40+ game at 8 am on Saturday morning (which, by the way, seems to occur in every gym in America)... When I was 18 or 21, I couldn't understand how anyone paid that much money to play sports could play that way. Now that I'm 30, I understand. The body ages. Playing hard every day takes it's toll. Now, I'm amazed that anyone could play 82 games a year at 30+, especially at that level of competition and speed. Nonetheless, I'd rather watch Duke v. NC State or Texas AM vs. Kansas in February than the Spurs v. Cavs because the kids play with more intensity that time of year.

On the other hand, I love watching the NBA playoffs... or any game that both teams really want to win.

by PoliSam on Aug 9, 2007 8:07 AM PDT up reply actions

college game
I can't stand the college game. Too many teams! How am I supposed to follow that? And when I do watch, it's the lack of skill that makes it unwatchable. Yeah, sure, they hustle; after loose balls from missed passes and rebounds from ill-considered threes. And it's not just 82 games, it's 48 minutes too. Pay dudes a billion dollars a game they'll still get tired doing that as long as they still have drug tests.

by Jumbo on Aug 9, 2007 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Lack of skill?
Jumbo, what percentage of people here do you think come anywhere close to the level of skill of college ball players, at any division level, let alone Div IA?  On average, you could take any player sitting at the end of the bench and he'd regularly beat anybody here in a game.  Hell, that's true for any NCAA women's player.

As for too many teams.  No one said you had to follow every single college team.  Do what most people do and pick one team to follow.  If you love the game of basketball, then it's all good.

PS - not sure what NBA games you watch, but from the ones I've seen, the NCAA has no monopoly on missed passes and ill-considered three's.  In fact I'd say that the pro's give away nothing on that score.

by timg56 on Aug 10, 2007 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Sure, they're better than me...
But are they better than the worst NBA team? Mmm, not so much. You may imagine that Florida or some NCAA all star team could beat your average basement dwelling NBA team, but that's just not so. The NCAA creeps me out too. I don't like an organization like that where a bunch of rich old white dudes get richer off the free labor of adult men. Rasheed used to say the NBA was like a plantation, and he had a point, but at least they actually got paid.

PS- Duh.

caliber of play
is diluted by the nba itself... not many players stay 4 years any more and if they do they arent "usally" nba caliber players..the college game is at most an high school all star game...and as far as them being better players than most of us..well look around at the rose garden..its not a gathering of aau alumni in the stands... and i take offense because ill light up the majority of osu,psu and u of p players right now..cant say that about the ducks
if it can be conceived it can be achieved

playoff intensity
is the best.  I hear ya on the lack of hustle, but I'm always surprised at how many criticize the length of playoff series.  I love a good series, especially watching the coaching adjustments.  By about game 5, it's all out there usually, no surprises left, just battling it out.

I'd rather see a shorter regular season than shorter playof series.

by greyhound9 on Aug 9, 2007 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Patience
Fatty, you know the possiblity is there that even if we play the best ball with the best players, coaches, staff, etc., that may not guarantee a title whether it is 3 years or 15 years from now.  The only way I would start to lose patience is if they (from Paul Allen down to Blaze) under-perform year after year after year.  If we are not in the playoffs in 3-5 years, then something is wrong or missing and needs to be fixed or found.  I believe we have the right people in charge not to let that happen.  Of course, if they won...please pass the champagne!

I'll be disappointed...
...after every loss.

I'll cringe at ill-advised quick shots and shout every time a cutter slips into the lane, unguarded and unnoticed.

I'll shout when B-Roy's man slips backdoor for a dunk.  I'll roll my eyes back when Oden jumps onto a guard for a head fake.  I'll slam my beer down when Nate calls a play for Aldridge when clearly it's Outlaw who's on fire.

I'll curse their lack of spirit in blowouts.  Every stupid foul, every botched fast break, every ball dribbled off a foot will earn my scorn.

I'll hate what they do to me.  When I kick my cat, shout at my wife and yell at the paperboy, it'll all be because of last night's game.  They'll tie my gut into knots and dice it into pieces.

But I'll keep watching.  Because, you know, they might get better?  You never know - Outlaw almost reminded me of Billy Ray the way he soared on the dunk last night.  LMA gave a spin move that looked like Hakeem was reincarnated early.  The way B-Roy's chest puffed up and he slowed it down coming up court?  Pure Terry Porter.

I don't know.  They're starting to grow on me.  I mean, I know they just disappoint me year after year after year, but...  it seems like things are getting better.  Maybe we'll move up in the standings.

Maybe we'll beat Seattle or even LA...  Maybe we'll finish ahead of Utah?

Of course they disappoint me.  Over and over again.  They're MY team.

Disappointment is just a funny way of saying "I have no patience, but I care".  It's kind of like love.

I love my disappointing team.

Right on the mark!
I'm an optimist by nature when I'm not looking at the environment or politics. Which is exactly why I continue to cheer the blazers year after year. Qyntel who??? I mean we've all been through the meat grinder over the past 15 years (Game 7 WCF oh god WHYYYYYY!!) and every dip downward every blown draft choice every Whitless trade has been a dagger in my heart.

I will cringe with every poor play every TO and everytime one of the big three fouls out on a head fake. But every year I will envision a deep playoff run. But that ain't nothing new since "Two for Larue!"

I like the rest of the NBA (Aside from stern the refs etc.) I dabble in college ball and watch the occasional football game in December/January. Heck I even happened to watch #756 out of Barry last night by pure happenstance. Really though it is only the Blazers that give me true joy in sports. If I'm not playing in a game I can only REALLY get crazy if its a team from a small market wearing RED/BLACK/WHITE. We're a .500 team or there abouts and I can live with that. They will be going deep by 2010 minimum 2nd round and I'm gonna love every minute of it even the brutal losses.

Big time disappointed
If we don't at least make the finals within six years, I'll be bummed. No Title in 10? Oh yea. That's to be expected from a true fan. We love our team, and live with rose-colored lasik treatments whenever we envision the future. Does that mean that we'll jump off the wagon if we don't win a title? Nope. There will always be something to root/hope for around the corner.

One thing that would truely dampen my love for the team would be if the players weren't disappointed not to have a title in that time. If we keep getting bounced in the playoffs, I'd better hear some of our key players and coach venting some frustration. If we're settling for "we're just happy to be here" then we should be disappointed. Championships are won, not handed out for showing up a lot.

interesting post Fatty
I will be disappointed if it takes the Blazers 10 years to win a title.  Personally, I think they win one in 6-7 years.   However, I am certainly aware that there are many things that need to happen for the Blazers to win a title with this group- plenty of promising young big 3s have been put together that have never amounted to much.  Most of us on this site will continue to support and root hard for the team- but we are not casual fans.

I for one am interested in what happens if the Blazers put up a 35 win season this year or take 4 years to get out of the first round or what have you.  Will the casual fan (the one who bought season tickets after the draft lottery) keep coming to the games?  Its open for debate.

The vast majority of BlazersEdgers, though, will be along for the ride no matter what.

Okay Fatty, I'll bite
Sure I'll be disappointed if Oden and the Blazers take ten years to win a championship.  That would mean the core of Roy, Aldridge and Oden have somehow been broken up or have not been able to fulfill their potential due to injury, etc.

But I've been hoping for the Blazers for 35+ years now and there have been lots of disappointments and lots of unfulfilled potentials along the way.

I am just happy that they now have a group of young players who seem willing to play their best every night.  They may lose a lot this year, but those losses will hopefully be due to inexperience instead of the lack of effort or desire that seemed to plague the Blazer teams of a few years back.

by bbfred on Aug 8, 2007 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

When potential is not reached, i'm disappointed.
We have three potential really good players.  We lucked out in that we managed to snag stars enough to propel us over the top, so yes I'll be disappointed by then.

I don't plan on winning more than 40 games next year.  I don't plan on winning more than 45 the year after.  I DO expect to up that to 50 or 55 the year after that, and I do expect a championship run the year after that.

Will I still love the blazers?  Of course man.  They're my team.  If I stuck with them during a PAINFUL time (losing team AND hated the players), how could i not stick with them when they're doing better and at least I'll like the players?

Still, i have high hopes.  I have hope that all the players will gel and rock together.  I have hopes that we can fit Rudy in seamlessly and he'll take the role he's given.  I have hope that we'll find the two missing pieces and be an unbelievable team for the ages.

Disappointed ???
Good idea. Yes, I'd be disappointed if the
Blazers don't have a championship in the next
ten years. I think everything is set up to start
making a yearly run in 09-10. If we are close,
look for KP to sign a big FA veteran to stabilize
the team ala Buck Williams. When the Blazers got
Buck I knew he was the right piece as the team
needed an athletic PF who could play great D,
rebound like a monster and finish on the break.
I think GO is that type of player. It will take
two or three years to blossom into a great all
around center. For now, he's big, athletic and
tough, which will help us on the interior and
the boards.
LMA and Roy are the keys, as both guys could average 20 + in the next couple of years.
The key is both want to win and are willing to
work hard, get teammates involved and play an
all around game. The rest of the team needs to
step up to fill those supporting roles. I like
the chances from here on out and will be taping
every game just like the last 20 years. See you
at Pioneer Square.

ther is much better things to be disapointed about
than waiting 10 years for a championship. I am a blazer fan for life so it dont matter to me how long it takes, although it would be nice to actually be alive if it happens.

only you
will kill the moment myemic23,the real reason i put this post up is to honestly see where people feelings really are.if you noticed dave been posting lately catering to the goofs for a reason. honestly robinson, hakeem, shaq, wilt, jordan 7 years. the reason why i posted this topic is,this is not going to happen overnight people.they'll be lucky to make the playoffs in 09.just look at the talent after the little 3,now that boston has the nba's big 3.until they get a legit 3 and a 1 you can grow with.and upgrade this hedious bench with veteran role players.this team is going to struggle real bad.give dave credit guys.he sees something very similiar to what i see down the road.even if webster*outlaw pans out, this is the nba people.and who would you rather pay those 2 a d.miles type deal apiece or give the money to the little 3.common sense will dictate the obvious .but in the nba people wanna get paid.and i just don't see pricthard paying those 2 over a stud free agent or the little 3 do you.

What about Duncan?
Duncan won in his second year.  Granted it was the short season.  Oh, and he won in his 6th, 8th, and 10th season.  Not to mention they were competing in all but two of the years in between.

Since we are built around the same philosophy, it stands to reason that we at least have a shot.  Remember it's not just about us, the state of the league, and who we draw as playoff opponents are huge factors.

That's a very high bar to set
I'm not saying there isn't a shot, but I wouldn't put my money on that.  Oden is a remarkable prospect and I have every reason to believe he will become something special, but 2 years, then 6, 8, and 10... we are trying to build a dynasty here and we might... but to think that we are definitely is asking for disappointment, when you shouldn't have anything to be disappointed about in this team.  They are moving in the right direction with almost every step they take... but a title in 2 years and 3 more in the eight following years is setting the bar really, really high.

you know why i did'nt post that dude, because guys like sikma, kareem, and duncan won in only 2 years. because that would only feed the goofs frenzy.and last i've checked there is no oscar robertson's, no dennis johnson*gus williams on the blazers. so that shoots your wishing upon a star dream of this team winning early out the window dude.the ? you asked is for the goofs crowd.not the people who are realist.when you're depending on the wayans brother combo of webster*outlaw it's going to be awile dude book it !!!!

You did NOT
say "wayans brother combo" about Martell and Travis, did you?

Forget about Webster & Outlaw
What about Roy and Aldridge?  Do you consider the probability of those two being DJ / Gus Williams quality contributors by the 07 - 08 season to be less than ... lets say 50%?

sick to my stomach
and disapointed..but thats life...maybe  this team can attract a few free agents that will take pay cuts to play in front of this fan base, this owner an this team...maybe...I wonder what kind of perks do you get being a blazer...the things that mark cuban and the maloofs are doing could be small tme compared to what mr allen can do
if it can be conceived it can be achieved

by lyfefindsaway on Aug 9, 2007 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

kunnert and krew
but im one of those blazer fans that thinks we can win it all in october... even when kunnert,  owens, dudley, thompson or who ever was in the middle...just call me mr northwest cub fan...every year is our year..but i always seem to say "wait'll next year"
if it can be conceived it can be achieved

Fatti we can do it
I feel much better about our chances with GO, LMA & Roy then I would with D. Williams or Paul.

by jayjaylbh on Aug 9, 2007 3:55 PM PDT reply actions

But if only we had
one of those two as well... I know hindsight is 20/20... and I know Blazer brass felt that Paul would become a head-case, but even if it was just Deron... imagine if... it was in our hands, all we needed to give up were two guys who we are often talking about trading anyway.

by drawingjeremy on Aug 9, 2007 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Even if it was just Deron?
I think I'd choose Williams over Paul.  I may concede Chris Paul has a higher skill level, but I prefer Williams size and build.

I still believe that at worst we got the 3rd best guard in that draft and that Jack is going to end up as part of that draft's PG trifecta.  Look at the numbers from last season.  (Jack/Paul/Williams)

79 33.4 320-705 .454 63-180 .350 243-279 .871  2.6 1.09 2.37 5.3 12.0

64 36.8 381-871 .437 50-143 .350 292-357 .818  4.4 1.84 2.52 8.9 17.3

80 36.9 494-1083 .456 82-255 .322 227-296 .767  3.3 .98 3.08 9.3 16.2

Jarret is not yet with them on points and (more importantly for a PG) assists per game, but he plays a bit fewer minutes and is not meant to be as high of a scoring option for his team as the other two (number of FG attempts).

But he shoots from the field as well as Williams, from behind the arc as well as Paul and better at the line than either.  He doesn't rebound as well as either, but turns it over less.  If Jack does nothing more than bring his assist average up to 7.5 and becomes better on the defensive end, I will be more than happy with him.

That's nice.
I'm not sure where I fell off the JJ bus, but I forget how young he is and how hard it was to shine on last year's squad.

Your post reminds me that he's not half bad now and there are many reasons to expect continued growth.
