Not Really....
Also, after the telfair and webster picks, I'll have to see Oden play for a while before I put him in the class of centers you listed. I don't consume much of the hype surrounding draft picks.
Portland simply has too many unknowns and holes in their roster to talk championship yet in anything more then theoretical terms. How will all the youth develop together? Just how good are Frye and Jones? Is Webster a bust? Will Outlaw continue to improve? Are any of Oden, Aldridge, and Roy injury prone? Will either Jack or Sergio turn into a good PG? Will Portland actually have substantial cap space in 2009 and will it be used effectively?
As Dave pointed out in his most recent column, right now it's enough that the team/franchise is moving in a positive direction....my unreasonable expectations won't kick in till the fall of 2009 at the earliest.
Disappointed? Heck No!
So yeah, I'll wait. I'll buy a goof t-shirt and be sitting in the 300 level with all my bandwagon friends. Eatin' a $6 hot dog, drinkin' a $8 silver bullet. I'll wait through the wins, through the losses.
I'll be there baby, come what may - Book it!

Disappointed?
But ya, I want to see a title within 10 years, so waiting till the whole 10 years is up, would be hard to swallow, especially if we had some heart breaking seasons on the way. But hey, that is life as a fan, nothing is for sure, no future, no matter how bright, is set in stone.

Not at all.
I would like my team to be competative. Perferrably enough so that they win more games than they lose and have at least some chance of competing for a title. Barring that, I want them to be guys I like to watch and root for.
Why I'm almost giddy about Portland is because they have guys I like to root for (Blake, Roy, Pyrzbilla, Jack) plus guys that at least give me hope that they will be competative (Roy, Aldridge and Oden). It's also why I hate to see us lose guys like Ime (he fits both categories in my opinion) and even guys like Freddie Jones, Dickau and Dixon (they're in the first category - two local guys & a Terp).
truth be told,
I only became aware of you guys when Nate landed there from my town up north, and prior to that, I kinda liked Walton and much appreciated Clyde and Luke. But in a distant, uninvested sort of way.
Then you got my home town fav, a guy I'd watched in high school and college, and enjoyed rooting for immensely, in Mr. Roy.
I liked the little bit I knew about that kid from Texas too, but I didn't really know much about him.
Somewhere around the middle of last season the name of some ex Kansas guard was being tossed around. He had both Larry Brown and San Antonio bloodlines as well. Intriguing. I started to pay a small bit of attention.
When you guys hit the lottery, I began watching to see if you'd go flash or substance with the pick. That was a fun telenovela. I thought you guys did it right.
So here I am now. An unrepentant jailblazer hater and still somewhat casual fan, watching from a bit of emotional distance. I'm thinking this all makes me GOOFy. I prefer to think of myself as Pritchafied.
In any case, I think that there are several more Pritch steps still to be taken before words like dynasty and champion are anything more than fun machinations. And I still think that it's PA, Kevin and Nate that make the Blazers promising, and that Oden simply accelerated a predestined timeline.
With one more fairly big trade and continuity in the core group, on and off the court, the next two seasons will make the Blazers an elite team.
I define that as a team still full of promise at the end of the regular season and being among the three or four favorites to reach the championships.
Candidly, for Nate's and Brandon's sakes. that's good enough for me. I value smart, classy highly competitive team first play and great role models off the court more than rings.
Rings would simply be desert. I'll happily take Dallas/Phoenix/San Antonio type consistent excellence and live with the lucky/unlucky breaks that determine who gets it all in any particular year especially if my son wore a Roy jersey with both of us being proud in a way Iverson and Kobe will never work for his Dad, and Nate and Ime jerseys lack the necessary cachet for him.

Nice post man
That being said as much as Roy winning ROY was a bummer and an awesome thing (Bummer cause I missed ALL of last season due to lots and lots of personal changes and upheavals DOH!!)
I was still only starting to pay attention again when Roy was in the running for it. Then we got the #1 pick and I heard the whole Durrant/Oden debate. I youtubed them both and was absolutely mesmerized by Oden. Durrant looked like yet another flashy and highscoring phenom. Oden seemed to be dripping in championship sweat. I'm sorry but you have to be really distant not to be excited about landing the big fella. After watching youtube a ton and reading alot about last season I've come to appreciate Roy's game the most. I think he will probably be the least mega star of the three and might just be on the cusp year after year for all-star status. Roy though fits the model of the kind of guy I always loved the best. He has the passion and love of the game that Kersey had combined with the assassin like ice water in the veins of a Porter or Steve Smith. I love that so Roy is my guy and fatty will be getting me a black home jersey when we go 41 and 15.
That being said I absolutely love Oden's attitude he is such a goof ball and seems like a sweet guy. I think the blazers will be in the WCF MUCH faster then fatty thinks depending on seeding that year.
I think the long term nemesis for Portland is clearly Utah and I think that is our team to beat. They are already really really good and are young enough they will be better by the time Portland is rolling. That being said I think Portland goes round 2 or deeper starting no later then 2010 and they can go to WCF or even finals as early as 2010. If they haven't hit finals by 2014 I will be very worried because the team might not be able to suck it up and work it out for 6-7 years without someone wanting a trade. I will always be by and for the Blazers. I appreciate everyones realism but I see Portland go further faster than most think we will be a 4-5 seed by 2010 book that!
I can take all the time in the world
I'll be disappointed...
But you know what? I'll take a slew of game 7 losses in the conference finals over a decade of irrelevance.
all I can say is...
No Dissapointment, no matter what!
Now just thrilled to know we will most likely have another go at it man, ain't that enough?
Hey everbody! Enjoy the trip, I mean every single day of it.
As far as I'm concerned
Of course, I'm not a fan of the team, so no surprises there.
But I do live in Portland and I love watching NBA hoops. Last year, I wound up making several trips to the Rose Garden, more than I'd made in any of the other five seasons I've lived here (I usually just show up for the Knick game) At first, it was because I bought one of those crazy-cheap ticket deals they were offering. But by season's end, I was buying tickets to individual contests. Although they didn't win many games, I found myself drawn in by the many compelling storylines: the continued development of Roy and Aldridge; Ime Udoka's against-all-odds roster spot and subsequent emergence as an every game starter; Sergio's dazzling, barely-under-control play off the bench; and Randolph's resurgent offensive game and watching the rest of the team struggling to figure out how to coexist with the "Zach Hole."
In short, I found the team highly entertaining, albeit in a soap opera-ish kind of way. The outcomes of the contests never mattered to me as much as seeing how those different narrative threads would develop. In a way, I was saddened when the Blazers selected GO because now the Blazers will likely become "The Greg Oden Show"; the focus of the team's strategy - in both its marketing and on-court style of play - will come to be largely dominated by Oden. And while that may ultimately result in a championship, it seems just a little less interesting; more conventional, somehow. (Conversely, I think selecting Durant would have generated some much more compelling storylines, at least from this spectator's standpoint)
And, also: I suspect all of those cheap ticket packages from last year are now gone out the window.
As a recovering Knicks fan myself...
That said, I don't think the Blazers will ever really be the Greg Oden Show. First of all, this year we're going to be the LaMarcus Aldridge show. Secondly, I would be surprised if Greg led the team in points for the forseeable future. He'll come in 2nd or 3rd, for sure, but I think Brandon and LaMarcus are going to score the bulk of our points for a long time.
I'm not tut-tutting it
But as I wrote in my post, I don't really care if the Blazers ever hang another banner from the Rose Garden rafters. My interest in the Blazers was piqued by all the interesting storylines that developed last season as the team and its players worked to establish an identity. To an outside observer like me, "team built around dominant big man" just seems so much more run-of-the-mill.
And, of course I didn't mind watching it when the Knicks did it with Ewing. My interest in that case was to see New York win a title, after all.
Playoffs v. Title
As long as the Blazers are in the play-offs or competing for a playoff spot, I'll be interested. I would never lose patience are lose interest just because they didn't win the title.
Thanks
No problem
On the other hand, I love watching the NBA playoffs... or any game that both teams really want to win.
college game
Lack of skill?
As for too many teams. No one said you had to follow every single college team. Do what most people do and pick one team to follow. If you love the game of basketball, then it's all good.
PS - not sure what NBA games you watch, but from the ones I've seen, the NCAA has no monopoly on missed passes and ill-considered three's. In fact I'd say that the pro's give away nothing on that score.
Sure, they're better than me...
PS- Duh.

playoff intensity
I'd rather see a shorter regular season than shorter playof series.
Patience
I'll be disappointed...
I'll cringe at ill-advised quick shots and shout every time a cutter slips into the lane, unguarded and unnoticed.
I'll shout when B-Roy's man slips backdoor for a dunk. I'll roll my eyes back when Oden jumps onto a guard for a head fake. I'll slam my beer down when Nate calls a play for Aldridge when clearly it's Outlaw who's on fire.
I'll curse their lack of spirit in blowouts. Every stupid foul, every botched fast break, every ball dribbled off a foot will earn my scorn.
I'll hate what they do to me. When I kick my cat, shout at my wife and yell at the paperboy, it'll all be because of last night's game. They'll tie my gut into knots and dice it into pieces.
But I'll keep watching. Because, you know, they might get better? You never know - Outlaw almost reminded me of Billy Ray the way he soared on the dunk last night. LMA gave a spin move that looked like Hakeem was reincarnated early. The way B-Roy's chest puffed up and he slowed it down coming up court? Pure Terry Porter.
I don't know. They're starting to grow on me. I mean, I know they just disappoint me year after year after year, but... it seems like things are getting better. Maybe we'll move up in the standings.
Maybe we'll beat Seattle or even LA... Maybe we'll finish ahead of Utah?
Of course they disappoint me. Over and over again. They're MY team.
Disappointment is just a funny way of saying "I have no patience, but I care". It's kind of like love.
I love my disappointing team.
-t
Right on the mark!
I will cringe with every poor play every TO and everytime one of the big three fouls out on a head fake. But every year I will envision a deep playoff run. But that ain't nothing new since "Two for Larue!"
I like the rest of the NBA (Aside from stern the refs etc.) I dabble in college ball and watch the occasional football game in December/January. Heck I even happened to watch #756 out of Barry last night by pure happenstance. Really though it is only the Blazers that give me true joy in sports. If I'm not playing in a game I can only REALLY get crazy if its a team from a small market wearing RED/BLACK/WHITE. We're a .500 team or there abouts and I can live with that. They will be going deep by 2010 minimum 2nd round and I'm gonna love every minute of it even the brutal losses.
Big time disappointed
One thing that would truely dampen my love for the team would be if the players weren't disappointed not to have a title in that time. If we keep getting bounced in the playoffs, I'd better hear some of our key players and coach venting some frustration. If we're settling for "we're just happy to be here" then we should be disappointed. Championships are won, not handed out for showing up a lot.

interesting post Fatty
I for one am interested in what happens if the Blazers put up a 35 win season this year or take 4 years to get out of the first round or what have you. Will the casual fan (the one who bought season tickets after the draft lottery) keep coming to the games? Its open for debate.
The vast majority of BlazersEdgers, though, will be along for the ride no matter what.
I'd be dissapointed if it took that long
Okay Fatty, I'll bite
But I've been hoping for the Blazers for 35+ years now and there have been lots of disappointments and lots of unfulfilled potentials along the way.
I am just happy that they now have a group of young players who seem willing to play their best every night. They may lose a lot this year, but those losses will hopefully be due to inexperience instead of the lack of effort or desire that seemed to plague the Blazer teams of a few years back.
When potential is not reached, i'm disappointed.
I don't plan on winning more than 40 games next year. I don't plan on winning more than 45 the year after. I DO expect to up that to 50 or 55 the year after that, and I do expect a championship run the year after that.
Will I still love the blazers? Of course man. They're my team. If I stuck with them during a PAINFUL time (losing team AND hated the players), how could i not stick with them when they're doing better and at least I'll like the players?
Still, i have high hopes. I have hope that all the players will gel and rock together. I have hopes that we can fit Rudy in seamlessly and he'll take the role he's given. I have hope that we'll find the two missing pieces and be an unbelievable team for the ages.
Took Jordan 6
The Blazers are my team as well, and I will be there all the way through every gut wrenching loss. We have a team you can respect again. Once they start acting like overpaid spoiled brat gangsta's... thats when I loose interest in the players. My heart is always with the team.
Disappointed ???
Blazers don't have a championship in the next
ten years. I think everything is set up to start
making a yearly run in 09-10. If we are close,
look for KP to sign a big FA veteran to stabilize
the team ala Buck Williams. When the Blazers got
Buck I knew he was the right piece as the team
needed an athletic PF who could play great D,
rebound like a monster and finish on the break.
I think GO is that type of player. It will take
two or three years to blossom into a great all
around center. For now, he's big, athletic and
tough, which will help us on the interior and
the boards.
LMA and Roy are the keys, as both guys could average 20 + in the next couple of years.
The key is both want to win and are willing to
work hard, get teammates involved and play an
all around game. The rest of the team needs to
step up to fill those supporting roles. I like
the chances from here on out and will be taping
every game just like the last 20 years. See you
at Pioneer Square.
ther is much better things to be disapointed about
only you
What about Duncan?
Since we are built around the same philosophy, it stands to reason that we at least have a shot. Remember it's not just about us, the state of the league, and who we draw as playoff opponents are huge factors.
That's a very high bar to set

Even if it was just Deron?
I still believe that at worst we got the 3rd best guard in that draft and that Jack is going to end up as part of that draft's PG trifecta. Look at the numbers from last season. (Jack/Paul/Williams)
79 33.4 320-705 .454 63-180 .350 243-279 .871 2.6 1.09 2.37 5.3 12.0
64 36.8 381-871 .437 50-143 .350 292-357 .818 4.4 1.84 2.52 8.9 17.3
80 36.9 494-1083 .456 82-255 .322 227-296 .767 3.3 .98 3.08 9.3 16.2
Jarret is not yet with them on points and (more importantly for a PG) assists per game, but he plays a bit fewer minutes and is not meant to be as high of a scoring option for his team as the other two (number of FG attempts).
But he shoots from the field as well as Williams, from behind the arc as well as Paul and better at the line than either. He doesn't rebound as well as either, but turns it over less. If Jack does nothing more than bring his assist average up to 7.5 and becomes better on the defensive end, I will be more than happy with him.
That's nice.
Your post reminds me that he's not half bad now and there are many reasons to expect continued growth.
