superstition

i wonder if anyone else has little superstitions about magical ways in which they can affect the games. i noticed last year that if i "muted" commercials in the 4th quarter of a close game, the blazers tended to win.

but if i got lazy and/or forgot, something bad happened.

sometimes it was the reverse. if i didnt endure the commercials the flow of the game would be lost. so i had to kind of sense which way to go.

and having something to eat during a game was tempting fate.

talking on the telephone...good luck or bad?

are you superstitious?

If the Blazers start a winning streak of
more than 3 games I keep my underwear on until they lose, no ifs, ans, or buts.  This is particularly difficult when trying to shower, relieve myself, etc... kidding of course!

I don't really have any required rituals that I go through with regards to fate, etc... I can't say that I've been happy with the results when I talk through games on the phone, but I think that has more to do with our winning percentage over the last few years.

Though the following isn't because of superstition I do tend to prefer a certain method of attack to watching games.  I do prefer to DVR games and stay away from all media watching at the end of the night when I'm not at a game in person (and then I still wish I had my fast forward button for the lulls).  I do tend to watch a bit of the half time recap.  I skip through some of the opposing teams foul shots, though usually not ours (and sometimes none if there is enough tension in the game... like to draw it out then).  I have had a good time bringing my laptop by the TV and posting on BE during game time chats, so occasionally if it's a home game that I've given the tickets away on or if it's an away game on TV I'll watch in real time, but that's probably under 30% of the time.  Also, with regards to DVRing the game I usually try to start somewhere around 30 to 40 minutes late, so by the end of the game I'm in real time for the last 15 minutes or so.  Oh, and if I'm at home I like to make food during the half time recap and eat while watching the second half on a fairly regular basis.

I always felt...
...if I watched a whole game on TV, the Blazers would lose.  Sorta screws up my ability to be a fan...

I've noticed...
that if I wear my lucky T-shirt and nothing else while watching the game, the doorbell rings every single time.

did you guys notice
that the blazers always seemed to play their best when it wasnt on tv.  Hopefully thats not true for this year since we only have 1 game not on tv.
Both teams played hard, god bless and good night.

I am completely non superstitious.
But I have enormous fun pretending to be superstitious with sports.  I figure if I'm going to be irrational enough to really care which group of men put a ball somewhere, i might as well go the whole hog.  I have worn lucky outfits, watched games in the same place, prayed like Mother Teresa, eaten particular things etc..

A few years ago, when the Blazers were in the playoffs I would have a new beverage and munchie of support for the Blazers.  Probably the most brutal year was the one involving Olde English 800 and orange tic-tacs.

Two times
I've worn my original Blazersedge t-shirt.  One time the night we got 1237 comments in one gameday post.  The second time the night of the ping-pong ball drawing for the draft lottery.

I'm saving that third time until, like, a Game 7 in a playoff series or something.

It was the blazers vs lakers where kobe did his pushoff of roy and where odom did his scuffle with alridge. We lost that game.

I'm still complaining about that game.  Make my blood boil.  Those thievin' miscreants stole that game with a lot underhanded unsportsmanlike play while the refs put on their blinders.

by ladygonegrey on Aug 16, 2007 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

didnt aldridge hit 6 or 7 straight jumpers?
he finished 8-11 for 16 pts and 10 rbs.  Man he was hot that game, it will be nice when he is taking 10-15 shots every night.
Both teams played hard, god bless and good night.

I keep "split" stats
I've forgotten the exact totals but for a while I paid way too much attention to the Blazers record when I followed them via different media:

Last Year the Blazers were something like 5-10 when I watched on TV, 5-10 when I listened on the radio, 15-16 when I constantly refreshed gametracker and BlazeresEdge, 2-0 when I actually went to the game and 5-15 when I wasn't able to follow the game at all.

by jksnake99 on Aug 15, 2007 5:45 PM PDT reply actions

Obviously the Blazers good luck charm
is keeping you away from everything but tickets to games and as a back-up a computer.  No TV for you!  No radio for you!  And of course No soup for you!

I gotta be hydrated
During games, either watching on TV or in person, I gotta have something to DRINK.  If I run out of soda/etc, then the players will lose all their energy and we will lose.

I went home to Portland for a family thing right before the lottery, and when going through my closet I found a red Trailblazer shirt I don't remember ever seeing before (I know I never bought it).  I deemed it a lucky shirt, and wore it on lottery day, all day, along with my lucky old school Blazer headband.  I like to think the results speak for themself.

Eating during a game IS tempting fate... but I do it when I gotta.  I think I can trace that superstition directly back to game 7 2000 WCF, when I was at a bar-b-que and eating while watching the game.  The results speak for themself :-(

(Also, some of the people I watched that game with were extremely negative, as in every missed shot they start screaming how we're gonna lose and why bother even trying and whatnot, even in the 1st quarter.  It is EXTREMELY BAD LUCK to watch a game with that sort of person... and annoying)

Games in person and big games watched at home call for my Blazers headband, Nate's ban be damned!

I am fully aware that my relatively mild superstitions don't really affect the game, but they give me ease of mind and let me feel I am controlling the outcome of the game.  Which I am.  My positive thoughts got us the #1 pick and will ultimately deliver our decade of dominance.

I'm not all all superstitious.
My only ritual is to make sure I wait 40 minutes or so past tip-off before I begin watching the DVR'd game thereby avoiding ALL commercials.  Because they could be new, the commercials may not be too bad for the first couple of games, but then seeing the same ones over and over and over again drives me up a wall.  TVO has to be the best consumer invention since the internet. I wonder what will happen though when everyone has it.

Product placement!!!!!
You know they will find a way to drop MORE product placement if the ad revenue starts to slip.  I don't think that I want to see the Mike's hocking Under Armor, although maybe using Blaze as a display for an extermination service might be fun. :)

the problem with dvr recording games
A couple friends and I were watching the game against Denver.  By our recording, there was 2 minutes left in the 4th.  In real time, Brandon Roy had just hit that miraculous 3 to tie the game. Just make sure you turn your phone off if you are watching delayed.

I have been
saying 'brick' as opponents release free throws for 20 years.  In classic superstition fashion it doesn't seem to work on a consistent basis, but I feel like I'm not doing my part for the team unless I continue to curse the shooter.

Around the turn of the millenia there was a new energy drink called 'Whoop-ass'.  I and all those watching the game with me would wait for the Blazers to begin to falter and break out the literal (and hopefully metaphorical) can of Whoop-ass in hopes of inspiring the team to victory.  After the L*ker game 7 debacle there was never again a can of Whoop-ass in the fridge come game day.......Never.

Talking On The Telephone
If our family does not get together (my sisters and brothers-in-law with nieces and nephews) then we call each other while texting to others during commercials.  It's an unspoken rule that you can hang up on each other, no hard feelings, once the game comes back on.  This is for nights we listen on the radio or nights we watch on tv.  Duck football and basketball are even worse for this than Blazer games.  At one sister's house if you show up without a Duck shirt, she'll make you wear some ratty old one of hers.  That'll cure you.  Even though I dress for the occasion, I tell them I wouldn't presume to have an influence on the larger scheme of the basketball cosmos.  It's all on my boys!

by ladygonegrey on Aug 16, 2007 1:00 AM PDT reply actions

I can't seem to find
a lucky shirt to wear to games.  I may get two wins in a row, but never the third.  (I wear my old ones from the early '90s).  My Blazers' Edge shirt also was present at a loss.  I did wear my Cult of KP to the Rose Garden for the draft, but that "win" was a foregone conclusion.

I also start the games late and watch via the DVR.  Once in awhile I'll start live on the radio just to see how the game progresses and if it sounds like a good one I'll switch to TiVo.  But I fast forward a lot at the end of games if we're not doing well (but I also end up rewinding often

I fast forward through commercials too, though one night my cat saw the bank one with the dog playing ball in the kitchen ("someday a backyard") so whenever that was on and she was watching with me I'd have to replay it for her over and over.  :-)   Hmm, she's a black cat - I don't know what her "record" is, but considering the Blazer record last year I doubt she is good luck...  (And she never stays for the whole game anyway.)

The Blazer Announcing Team Drinking Game!
My roomates and I play it whenever we're watching. The rules are,

Drink once whenever Rice says something senile or borderline sexual.

Drink twice if he says whack, whacked, or any other form of the word (our personal favorite is "He really whacked him off his postion right there.")

Drink once when Mike Barrett complains about the officials.

Drink twice when he complains about Roy not getting calls.

Drink once whenever Ime hits from the corner, but we're gonna have to switch that out for something else next year. Maybe whenever Oden get's a block.

Drink whenever something spectacular happens but that's a given.

Finally if we're at a crucial moment in the game and the team needs that extra boost of good mojo coming their way we shotgun a beer.

The best thing about it was that only one of my roomates was a big Blazer fan already so we would watch every game and slowly but surely my other two roomates and some of our buddies started playing the game and watching with us. Of course after watching the young guys play they started to fall in love with the team too. So really by playing the drinking game we were ambassadors for the team spreading Blazermania into the community... I'm still waiting for my paycheck from the P.R. department.

I would often opt for the radio
And that would normally mean I would be driving around... One night, I think we were playing Sacramento, I was starting to think "ok, we aren't going to win this" when we just couldnt seem to get it done in the early 4th quarter, and so I was like whatever I'll just go home. Then, when I got on the freeway in Hillsboro, the Kings started missing shots, and eventually it got to a foul situation and the kings missed 2 free throws, I think, and then Brandon hit a shot at the buzzer to send it to OT. So I was like I am not going to risk this, I have to stay on the freeway, and I ended up going all the way to the Brooks Gervais exit, before turning around and going home to Tualatin. It was a long drive, I guess, but it was worth the win in OT.
