what do we make out of all of this?  i think the coach was right.  we do need better spacing.  also i think the big thin gis that we really miss brandon roy.  we NEED his perimeter defense.  and even more, we need his offense and ability to drive, score, dish and make everyone else better.  the blazers are missing that leader on the floor.  i think the oden project will get better, though he will not save the world this year, give him some time.  i also think that aldridge, if healthy is in route for a big year.  probably 18 and 8 or something of the sort.  i am curious to see what they do at 3, if its outlaw or martell, becasue i think ime is down the road for fiscal reasons.  i also am curious as to how good sergio can be, and if jack is really the guy to lead the ship to the promised land.  i think the draft next year can fill a need at point guard.  and i think that freagency in 09 will fill the 3, if need be.  but one things for sure, we need better perimeter defense, 3 point shooting, and a floor general.  most of that comes with roy so don't read too much into game one.  what do you think about all this?

yeah
Roy is such a critical piece for the Blazers.  He's the most composed offensive player, our best floor leader, the guy we look to when things break down.  Jarrett Jack is the next closest thing to a floor leader that we have.  One of the big disappointments was that Sergio and Webster couldn't really get the offense going in the game.  We'll need better play from them since both figure to get significant playing time with the 2nd unit.  However, I wouldn't worry about our first unit.  Oden will figure things out and both Aldridge and Roy will have big sophomore seasons.

in general
don't make too much of summer league.  Yeah, good players should perform well there, but that also has to do with teams clicking together which is out of everyone's control individually at this point.  I really think, for a team this young, wait and see until around game 5 or 6 of the regular season before making any major predictions for the rest of the season.  And even then, you might be wrong.  Sometimes it takes a while for players to click, and then they're just on like flipping a switch.  I think losing this game so badly was a great first step into lighting a fire under these guys to flip that switch on.

Aldridge
Should average over 20 points, in my opinion.

I see LMA
at 20/10. Roy is our mvp for all the reasons above. I think JJ is okay as the weakest starter on achampoinship squad if he adds a little range and much defensive effort to his game. I fear none of the current candidates at SF have the mental tools to be the last piece to a championship run. Ime would be a dream sixth man, as might Jones, I think. Pryz, Frye, Sergio, etc. are fine depth. I'm glad it's KP's job to sift through the pretenders at SF and pick the strongest weak link candidate.

roy's health
I think our decision to draft Oden over Durant makes us REALLY dependent on Roy to solve a lot of our problems.

I love Roy, and think he's up to the challenge. However, my fear is that he's not going to be able to stay healthy. We're going to need him to play a ton of minutes every night. He has a substantial history of injuries.  (last year's foot and knees), and I believe he missed a season in college due to a knee injury. I remember reading that the reason he slipped to #6 in the draft, was due to GMs concnerns about his health.

Roy isn't a superhero after all.
That's a scary truth I'd not thought about.

It makes developing JJ, LMA and Oden into guys who can carry a game for a stretch or two more urgent.

And it makes fleshing out our 8 or 9 man rotation important sooner rather than later.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
