Today at the gym

I debated writing a diary on this, but figured I've seen more pointless... I know I'll be repeating things that we've all talked about before, but it's off season, isn't that what it's all about?

So, I'll get on with it, I work out at Club Sport in Tualatin.  A number of years ago it was very common to see the team working out there.  Those days are mostly gone, they have a facility right across the street from the club where they now work out.

Today was different, about half an hour into my cardio I saw KP presumably some of his family working out nearby.  I finished my workout and though I tend to try to leave people alone I decided to approach him (hadn't seen anyone else do so) to just give him a quick compliment, let him know that I have been a season ticket holder for a number of years and that I'm really thrilled with the moves he's been making in the last couple of years.  As I expected he was appreciative, said "we've got the best group of kids I've ever seen and I am very excited about the future, but it will take some time".  I agreed, said I'm looking forward to 3-5 years out, but it'll be a fun ride on the way, then told him that I know he's heard this before, but I want to say it anyhow, I and many others think that he is really the center point to all of the positive changes that have been happening.  He of course was too humble to accept that praise, saying that he's only one person and that many people are involved.  (We know that's true, but someone is the centerpiece in making these decisions and it's become clear that right now a lot of the direction of the Blazers is the result of KP's influence.)

We parted ways.  A little while later I was out at the pool and coincidentally he pulled up right behind me, his family, possibly his mother had been there for a couple of hours apparently.  I did get to overhear a lengthy call, but it was one sided so there are only pieces that I got.  One is that there is something that he is trying to organize that will send as many people as possible to play with some big time NBA players, presumably this summer, he did specifically mention Duncan.  He said "I don't care how much it costs, I'll pay for it, I want as many of our guys there as possible."  Then went on to specifically talk about Lamarcus and how he needs to go up against Duncan to know that he's ready - thinks it will do wonders for his confidence and game.  He also mentioned Martell but wasn't as specific, just that he wants him there, wherever there may be.  Perhaps it's just a multi-team event, we know he has ties to San Antonio, if anyone hears anything please post, I think something will come of it.

There were more things discussed that I got less of, I was already hesitant on mentioning whatever this our guys with big time NBA stars thing was all about.  The only other things I clearly picked up are:

1. That he is very high on Gordon right now as far as future pick considerations, to be clear he did not say that he wants him, just talked about how impressed he is with his game:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/news/story?id=2624000

2. He repeatedly mentioned a Josh ???????, and was asking whoever was on the other line about how his attitude is (I don't know if this is a future NBA player or a current player, but there was definite interest)

and

3. I am fairly sure that he wants to bring in a new person into the coaching staff this September to help out, he said something like "unless he seriously screws up between now and then I think we should bring him here in September"

That was it with regards to KP, but then I saw Steve Blake in the locker room afterwards... but that's not as uncommon he's a member there and does spend a fair amount of time there when in town.  I did ask the front desk (since both were there) if there was any sort of an event today, but there wasn't, it was just chance that both were there at once.

In closing I'll just say how much I liked KP's style, he was humble, appreciative, engaging (if anything I was backing off to not seem like an annoyance), and was clearly extremely excited about where the future is headed, but at the same time not at all overzealous.  It's one thing for the fans to be excited about the possibilities, but you could see it in Kevin's eyes he's deeply very, very excited.  He tried to make sure I understood that we have an uphill battle ahead and we are not there yet (which I of course did understand and am not afraid of) which I appreciated.  We are lucky to have him as a GM, I can not have imagined Nash carrying himself that way, and I'm not a Nash basher, he came in at a bad time with a tough job of cutting the fat, but he's no KP!

that is fantastic work!!
I like that they are willing to spare no expense to get our guys ready for the season, though I would expect no less.

John Nash
We were seated near John Nash and his family at a restaurant a few days before the Martell Webster draft.  Didn't talk to him, but he seemed like a nice guy.  Very uncomfortable being in public, seemed sort of afraid people would come up and talk to him.  Sounds like quite a contrast to KP, though I'm sure Nash had fans give him some choice words about that 2004-2005 roster.

That's the impression
I got from Nash too, not a bad guy, and he was put in a tough position, but not at all personable.

Josh
Fascinating glimpse into a day in the life of a real NBA GM. Not a fraud like Isiah, but one who like a chess grandmaster is always thinking 3, 5, 10 moves ahead.

Anyway, reading your post I got to speculating as to who this "Josh" might be. Assuming it's a curent NBA player, there are only a limited number of possibilities:

Josh Howard - not likely.
Josh Boone - also unlikely.
Josh Smith - intriguing possibility but stories of a runaway ego make it unlikely that KP would be targeting him.

That leaves only Childress and McRoberts (unless I'm forgetting someone). I've long thought that J-Chill would make a great fit for Portland (or for my Knicks for that matter)and have suspected that he would be someone that's on Pritchard's radar. Of course, the most likely candidate is McRoberts (whom many of you have christened "the steal of the draft"). I'm guessing that KP sees a definite role for him on the team this year and wants to keep close tabs on his attitude as well as getting him as much work as possible against NBA caliber competition.

Any other guesses out there as to who it might be?

by knickfan on Jul 24, 2007 8:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not sure, but
the same names ran through my mind.  Realistically I'm assuming it's either Josh McRoberts or a yet to be known Josh... and I'm leaning towards the yet to be known.  The reason is that though many (his fatness being one of the most persistent) think Childress would be a great trade option, but why the questions about attitude?  He is an established player and shouldn't have to ask one of his people about that.  McRoberts I feel somewhat the same about, I mean he is on our team now, granted he likely doesn't know him as well, but his attitude probably wasn't much of a question mark by the time we drafted him.  So I'm thinking either a high school player headed to college or a college player, both of which I don't know that well.

Attitude
It's become very aparent that Pritchard places a very high premium on attitude. The quick cashiering of Zach and the pricey Francis buy-out make it abundantly clear that the Blazers now have a zero-tolerance policy for head-cases.

Which means that if KP is looking at a player - even an established three-year vet like Childress - he's not going to rely on reputation alone. Your GM is going to do some serious due diligence before bringing that player into the fold. I can see a workaholic like KP talking to anyone and everyone who may have ever had dealings with said player - right down to the guy's PeeWee league coach.

By the same token, it's also possible that Pritchard is still trying to get a better read on McRoberts' character. There were some questions about his attitude ("terrible body language and a player who didn't want the ball when the game was on the line") coming into the draft. If KP does envision a place for him on the team, he'd probably try and learn more about their second round pick in an effort to determine whether he's going to be the right fit, character-wise.

Anyway, this is all just rank speculation on my part. But I'll stand by my guess that it was either McRoberts or Childress that KP was referring to.

Josh
Josh Carter maybe?

He's a 6-7 SG from Texas A&M and might be in the upcoming draft.  He has a very good shot and is a very hard worker who pretty much focuses on basketball 24/7 (though I can't remember where I heard that, but somewhere had an article on him and his schedule in pretty much all basketball).  With Rudy coming over next year I don't know why we would need another SG but Gorden is a SG also (which is ironic to me because I was trying to fit him into the Blazers next year because I thought he would be a cool player to add; basically I had Roy at point on offense, with Gorden lighting it from the outside and posting up the other PG).

Thanks all
It was a fun afternoon, glad you liked reading about it.

I seriously doubt I'll see him there again anytime soon - can't recall seeing him in the recent past and it was just luck that he happened to come sit by me outside and had the phone conversation that he did - had it just been when I approached him, sure it would have been good to hear what a nice appreciative person he was, but the dirt is more fun.  There was lots more that he talked about, but I told everything that I could really "report" on, the rest was too one sided, too vague.  The things I mentioned I was fairly clear on.

by drawingjeremy on Jul 24, 2007 9:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts
At first I thought you probably shouldn't have passed on what you heard, but then it wasn't a conversation between the two of you and it wasn't like you were sneaking around trying to listen to a conversation he was trying to keep quiet...  I image Dave will have a comment about the ethics of this.  But until that time...

We know that Brandon is going to be on the squad that Team USA is practicing against, but surely the Blazers don't have to pay for that... or do they?  Anyway, that was my first thought about getting to go up against big names...

Was it all one conversation?  I thought perhaps he was talking to McRob's college coach when discussing attitude, but that doesn't seem to fit with anything else.

Every now and then I drive by the practice facility just in case ... but I've never seen anyone.  I mean that I recognized.  I might have seen you since I sometimes turn around in the gym parking lot ;-)

by jorga on Jul 24, 2007 9:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought about it
almost didn't... but when I considered I came to the same conclusions:  The conversation I heard one half of was just by chance, and others were around, not just me, so if there were super-secret business at hand, I figure he would have gone elsewhere.  Honestly I was just trying to read my book, and did, several chapters, but I'm a multi-tasker couldn't help hearing some of the conversation.  It wasn't as if he was discussing a trade in the works, or some such thing that could potentially interfere and if anyone I mentioned is on the draft board from next year we all know that there are dozens, if not hundreds that they explore.  Plus I really couldn't come to any great conclusions that seemed to help or hurt anyone, so I thought it would be OK.  It was one conversation so far as I know, though my back was to him, so I can't be 100% sure.

Makes you wonder who was on the other
end of that phone - my guess is he was talking to Nate at the Olympic quals. Since Roy is practicing against them, I'm guessing Pritch is oking the cost of tickets to get Aldridge and Webster down there.

There's no Josh on the Team USA roster, so I'm guessing it's McRoberts...

by Blazerholic on Jul 24, 2007 10:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If there were more than one call
but I don't think there was that's possible... but if it was just one call, as I think it was (back was turned and I was reading a book) it wasn't Nate because he said Nate's name at one point as something the two agree upon.  But, I think you may be onto something.  I think that it is very likely that the Olympic Quals are what he wanted LMA in particular, but really as many as possible down there for.  If they get to do some hands on scrimmaging, etc. that could be exactly what he was pushing for, just with someone else... someone who could give them (or lead them towards) a thumbs up to participate in the court time

I'm glad you clarified that for me.
Now I know exactly who he was talking to and who he was talking about.

my 3 year old nephew g.g. is giving you a standing ovation.to awnser your ?'s,as for lamarcus and webster there is a big time summer league in houston.where all the big time players play.if you remember a couple of months ago,i recommended that aldridge play in houston during the summer instead of vegas.and thank-god roy is going to scrimmage with team u.s.a.knowing this now, those 2 kids will come to camp on 8/27/07 loaded for bear.and remember oden is with team u.s.a. going up against d.howard's,c.bosh's,amare's of the world.as for josh's the hawks have 2 of them, and if has was asking about charecter ?'s,he must of been talking about j.smith stay tuned..jeremy great post dude.from me and my nephew great job.

Thanks fatty
That sounds likely on the summer league in Houston, probably more so than the Olympic Qual rounds (as I assume they are only looking at the actual players they are considering) though I thought that may be what the conversation was about once that idea was suggested.

We'll see on the Josh, hard to say since there was talk of future NBA players as well as current team mates, and we all know there are some possible candidates out there for a trade, etc.

Can't believe you thought twice about posting
This. This is great, I know someone mentioned it but you had a chance to bug KP's car. Anyway great piece it's nice to hear some info, even if it's just LaMarcus needs to play against Duncan. I don't know if I would have approached him, as I don't think I'd be able to not ask the question he's heard a million times, any more magic before training camp?

by morescrillaigots on Jul 25, 2007 8:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I was tempted
but knew that any answer I'd get on what else is up his sleeve would be vague at best.  That would be exactly the type of question that he simply couldn't answer.  I figured instead to just let him know that I am (and many others are) very happy and trust his judgment as he's earned it, and that we know it will take time.

Pete Newell's Big Man's camp
Perhaps that was what KP was talking about inregards to LaMarcus.  It's coming up in about two weeks.

Great post
I used to be a member at Club Sport way back when it was Sportsnation years ago and the Blazers still practiced there.  I'll never forget how freaking long Rasheed was, holy cow.  It was like he was shooting from the ceiling.

Anyway, thanks for the info.  Glad KP is as cool in person as he seems to be on TV, radio, what-not.

Pete Newell's camp
Pete Newell was the long time legendary coach
at UC Berkley. He has been known as a big man's
coach for many, many years. He has run the Big
Man's camp forever, specializing in footwork,
post moves, quick feet, etc. The list of alumni
is endless, Big Red, Shaq, Mourning, etc, etc.
I think GO even went last summer or the previous?
A coaching friend has been to the camp several times and thinks it's the best camp for Bigs.
It's GO time !

This Looks Like It...
Duncan isn't on Team USA, but the following sure sounds like what KP was talking about:

http://www.nba.com/features/mcmenamin.html

10. New Blood

The Team USA talent pool is ever expanding as Colangelo revealed that a select squad of young NBA talent will be coming out to Vegas in August to scrimmage with the current 17-man roster. The only names that Colangelo mentioned that are sure to be there were Brandon Roy of the Blazers and Nick Collison of the Sonics. I wonder who else will be on that team. Here's the pool of young, upcoming American players that could be on a short list of invites:

Andre Iguodala, Jameer Nelson, LaMarcus Aldridge, Tyrus Thomas, Al Jefferson, Craig Smith, Devin Harris, Jason Maxiell, David Lee, Kevin Martin, Gerald Green, Emeka Okafor, Hakim Warrick, Rudy Gay, Randy Foye, Josh Smith, Monta Ellis, Raymond Felton and Daniel Gibson.

Nate's camp?
Seems like Nate is having his kiddies camp at the practice facility so that's probably why KP and Blake went across the street.
