Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

A proposal for a Greg Oden nickname

I realize that I've already weighed in on this issue (my previous opinion was that Greg's nickname should come from Mo Lucas).  But it just struck me that there is a beautiful synergy here: Greg has been given Williams' jersey number so we, THE FANS, should give him the name "Buck". That is a real nickname, one that isn't made up by marketers but instead fits the man like a glove.  "Buck" has authenticity and links our guy Oden back to our old school warrior.

Other than that, "Treebeard" is very cool.

I'm calling him Buck Oden. Edit: And how did I forget the fact that our guy is from THE Ohio State University BUCKeyes? Beautiful? Yeah, I think so.

Oddly
I like that a lot better than anything else I've heard/can think of.
Believer, you have forgotten the true meaning of Alvis Day. Neither is it ham, nor pomp. Nay, the true meaning of Alvis day is drinking. Drinking and revenge.

Nickname
Partial to Greg "Treebeard" Oden myself.  My Granddaughter made me say that, lol.  Otherwise, no Playdoh chocolate easybake oven cookies for
Gramps ;-).

Your granddaughter is...
cool like Brandon Roy!  If she's down with "Treebeard", I sure am with her!

Greg Oden + Gold = Goden....
"Goden" ryhmes with Golden, derived from his first initial and his last name. Also contains the word God. Golden God like virtures...To be used like an adjective like Golden...

"Greg shoots over Shack... It's Goden!"
"Greg's play has been Goden tonight."
"Greg Goden's O'Neils shot out of here!
NOT in the house that Goden built!"

Or a nickname.
Greg "Goden" Oden.

Or a jingle, like the "Bluebonet" jingle.

"The Blazers game is better,
with Oden the Goden in it."

Or to explain how the Spurs lose to the Blazers.
"There was just to much Goden tonight."

In his interview with Miss Gossip
(link posted earlier) he said his preference was "G O" (gee-oh).  It's something he's been called in the past and likes it, so that's how I've been referring to him.

I like Treebeard too, but I saw Bill Russell called that the other day ; I don't know if that was new or he had been called that in the past.

I was a big Buck Williams fan so it's hard enough to see his number taken without being retired - I'd hate to see his name taken too.  (And I just found a spot for my nearly life-size poster of him so it's going back up for the first time in many years.)

Hmmm
I'm not sure where to go with this but I remember the epiphany I had awhile back that Oden is a variant spelling of ODIN who was the leader of the Norse Gods. Sort of the Zeus of the north if you will. I personally feel he doesn't really need a nickname and that his last name is more then cool enough. Of course I felt the same way about Drexler and how can anyone argue with "The Glide"
Can Oden Norse God of Hoops redeem a city Hungry for a return to the National Championship? Only time will tell.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
