Official Greg Oden Nickname Thread!

We can't let New York have all the fun with Zach and Eddy (I chose EZ money as a good nickname for them), we have to come up with a daring and creative nickname for the newest Blazer. Its a heavy responsiblity, I know, but I think we are up to the challenge.

Feel free to throw any idea out there, I'll start it off.

Allfather

you know, like as in Odin the norse god.  whaddayathink?

There is so much potential there.
I'd love to see Oden in a hood with an eyepatch and a couple of ravens on his shoulders.

by EnglandDan on Jul 2, 2007 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Naw...
...the eyepatch would screw up his depth perception.

On the other hand, if the ravens had game...

Personally
I can't get over the Treebeard connection.  It's not a nickname, but the look...

Nice job whoever made that connection.

Somebody call Northern Europe
How about G-Od

Mt. Oden

Olden

Odin

Bunch of neat pseudonyms for "Odin," but we'll nead Bjork to tell us how to pronounce them:

Langbarðr "Long Beard"
Jörmunr "The Mighty One"
Sigðir "Victory Bringer"
Veratýr "God of Men"
Hávi "High One"

Probably just end up being "Greg," since he seems to just be a genuinely nice dude.

Names
G.OlDEN

GOBot

The big G.O. (geo)

Thunderdome (I don't know where that came from, it just popped into my head, but after a huge block imagine an announcer saying "welcome to the thunderdome!)

The Terminator (he likes movies and again an indication of his defense)

G.OD... but that would be tempting fate, so let's NOT do that one!  All our players would probably come down with the plaque or something.

Roybot and GObot, that is pretty funny stuff

I don't know about a nickname,
but be prepared to hear "GREAT ODEN'S RAVEN!' in a lot of SportsCenter highlights.

"Wise LeBron"?

nickname
Instead of G.O. nicknames why not play on how he is perceived as older then he really is and use a throw back nickname like...

The OG (Original Gangsta)?

The Big Grin

Thunder

Nice and simple.  And play AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" as his theme.  :)

by EngineerScotty on Jul 2, 2007 8:50 AM PDT reply actions

or
welcome to the thunderdom (which i'd mentioned earlier).

He needs something more... the big thunder... the thundercat... The oncoming storm...

Aldridge and Oden
The names have been used before, but i think Oden and Aldridge would be the perfect Sherrif and Deputy.
"Z-Bo gets the ball and dribbles out the shot clock all while Curry screams for the ball"

Lack of nicknames
I was going to mention that few Blazers have decent nicknames, BRoy , LMA, JJ are all lame nicknames a la T-Mac. Only Sergio (the magician, Spanish chocolate) and Stevie Franchise have decent ones now that Big Cat Magloire is gone, and I kind of like Dr. Darius/Mr. Miles. Maybe Oden should make up his own nickname, like Shaq became Shaq Diesel. Or the Big Aristotle. I love great Oden's raven, but not really a nickname, just something Neil Everett will yell while showing a Oden vicious swat.

by morescrillaigots on Jul 2, 2007 9:37 AM PDT reply actions

no no no
Sergio is ESPRESSO!!!!

It's hard to believe...
Jack doesn't have a better nickname. Most of it, I'm sure, is that nicknames have to be earned and very few of the Blazers have accomplished enough, but at the same time, Jack's name is an announcer's dream...

Jarrett Jack "of All Trades" - because he's a combo guard.
Jarret Jack "Frost" - Ice Cold under pressure
Jack "Be Nimble" - after a crafty layup
"You Don't Know" Jack

The list goes on and on...

I like Thunder and Lightning for Oden and Aldridge or Thunder and Flash, but I don't think they're too creative. Mt. Oden was good as well.

I can just imagine Mike Barrett introducing Home Games on FSN with "It's Midnight in the Garden of Oden..."

by Champs2009 on Jul 2, 2007 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

Somewhat simple...
But I like Greg Freakin' Odin that someone posted last week.  Somewhat questionable, but it really captures what everyone thinks of him (fantastic potential, etc.).

I said.

LOL
Now that was funny, I totally got the whole Patinkin (sp?) visual reading that one.  Hysterical!

Now we just have to get him to go with the curly Prince Valiant / Steve Nash hairdo.

In Kevin Pritchard we trust.

God
Which could be interchanged with Lord Oden (as someone suggested)

oooohhhhh...
check this out...

Oden's Nickname

By definition, a nodule of stone having a cavity lined with crystals or mineral matter...

Just get him a platinum grill, and it makes perfect sense.

by you'vegottomakeyourfreethrows on Jul 2, 2007 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Let the play decide the nickname
I think the best nicknames are earned:
Chauncey Billups: Mr. Bigshot
Gary Payton: The Glove
Dwyane Wade: Flash
KG: Big Ticket
Nicknames that are puns on the name should not be allowed for our superstar center. Let's call Greg or Oden or Greg Oden until he goes out there and stuffs some fools and at the other end dunks over them, then the nicknames will flow.

by morescrillaigots on Jul 2, 2007 11:00 AM PDT reply actions

You forgot
the best one of all:  Big (or Cheap) Shot Bob.  That's just awesome.

I agree we have to see GO play before a nickname really catches.  The best nicknames do come out of play.

Unless, of course, you just want to call him Optimus Prime.

just... errr... quickly changes wording jumped in joy at the thought of naming him Odenmus Prime.

Odenmus Prime
That would be cool since he will help "Transform" the blazers
"Z-Bo gets the ball and dribbles out the shot clock all while Eddy Curry screams for the ball"

by JTDuck22 on Jul 2, 2007 12:36 PM PDT reply actions

HA!
I mentioned that one too after Dave brought the idea up.

Although I'm now leaning towards the big thunder (for cool thunderstruck and welcome to the thunderdome theme songs) plus that goes with aldridge who would be the lightning (he's quick and just as dangerous).

Together our team would be "the oncoming storm" as we blaze a trail of hurt across your asphalt.

Number 52
G-52: The Stratofortress ... I don't know, when I first heard his number that's what I thought, I think it sounds pretty cool

The Anti-Ha!
I'm in agreement with morescrillaigots.  Nick names ought to be earned or doled out by Maurice Lucus.

by lama on Jul 2, 2007 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

Thinking Superheroes...
This type of question can only be solved by hitting the ol' comic collection...

The Thing? (He sort of eerily has some Greg Oden about him...)

Colossus?

Juggernaut?

Martian Manhunter? (Hahaha...)

And then I suppose you could make a team of Ultimate Avengers out of our roster, starring...

Brandon Roy (Captain America)
Ime Udoka (Iron Man)
Sergio Rodriguez (Wasp)
Greg Oden (The Incredible Hulk)

We just need a Thor & a Giant Man (Aldridge?)

by Champs2009 on Jul 2, 2007 2:17 PM PDT reply actions

Oden needs a connection to the NW
Like:

Totem - though this makes him seem like he is immobile

or

Old Growth

or

Clearcutter

and my favorite so far above - Mt. Oden.

by BigRedDeadHead on Jul 2, 2007 5:38 PM PDT reply actions

One more
How about Old School?  The age thing is a little unfortunate but it is accurate.  Mostly his comparisons to Russell and their budding friendship combined with his play might fit.
In Kevin Pritchard we trust.

by TP43 on Jul 2, 2007 8:34 PM PDT reply actions

I have two ideas,
based on our experience with Greg Oden so far:

Powerball,
and Handsome

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
