Here we go again...one more trade to come soon?

From Jason Quick today:

"I asked Pritchard if he expects Jones (James Jones)to be the starting small forward this season, and he hesitated, saying he wasn't sure if he was done making moves. It confirms a suspicion I've had ever since the draft was done: Pritchard still has one big move left."

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2007/07/aldridge_out_undergoes_mri_on.html

For what it's worth, Quick reported before the draft that the Rockets had approached the Blazers about trading Shane Battier for a combination of players between Outlaw, Webster, and Jack.  The Rockets apparently lost interest as they couldn't find the right combination for their team.

A lot has happened since that initial Quick report.  The Rockets added Mike James, who is a shoot first PG and brought in a new coach Rick Adelman, who is more offensive minded.  The Blazers traded for Channing Frye, who I would imagine the Rockets covet and drafted Rudy F, who the Rockets reportedly wanted over Aaron Brooks.

My best guess is that the Rockets are still interested in trading Battier for a package deal that involves Channing Frye and another player.

With experience, leadership, defense, hustle, numerous intangibles, and three-point shooting, you gotta figure that Battier is the type of player that KP and Coach Mac absolutely love.

No Frye for Battier
Giving a conference rival a decent 7 footer for a very rich man's Ime Udoka is crazy talk.

if...
if Frye is involved in a package trade, it won't happen for awhile.  The CBA prohibits a player who was aquired in a package deal to be trade back out again in a package deal for like 3 months or something.  We can trade him by himself, but not in a package deal.

nooooo

I mean yeeeesss to Batman but no to losing Frye guy. I'm too used to Frye being our everything, mega upside, super back up for a young Oden, Hurting knees Zilla and that Aldridge fella. We lost him we go from loaded to suspect at the four/five for this year.

And I want Rudy to stay too. I guess we could give him up cause he isn't going to be here this year but damn, he's the best player in Europe. Course we may not get him so I guess this is a gooder move than Frye.

I'd prefer to hand them a couple small forwards (we have like five of them now and all with question marks.) and our first pick next year. Wait, are we making the playoffs next year or not?

I don't really know that much about Shane B, but I like the words tenacious D and deadly three point shooter very much.

I love women and basketball... but not women's basketball.

get battier
but not at the cost of Frye.  The best thing about Frye is that he could be a starter on some nba teams, and if you think Oden and Aldridge will both start every game, you are crazy. Having Frye to insert into either spot of the starting lineup, should Oden or Aldridge sit out , will be very nice. I love Battier, but Frye solidifies a very solid young front court for us. I would rather just pay Ime 3-4mil than trade Frye away for Battier.

by myemic23 on Jul 11, 2007 9:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Trading a backup player for a starting SF
Frye is a pretty good player in his own right.  Good height, nice shot, great guy to have as a backup if he indeed embraces that role.  Several things come to mind.

1) Frye is good enough to be a starter in the NBA.  How many years will he want to sit on the bench when he could eventually be making more money starting for somebody else?

2)We have a strong frontcourt bench and eventually we have to fill that SF position.  If we can find a better fit than Battier for that value, then let's go after him.  But Battier seems to fill a lot of needs.

3) Can McRoberts, Outlaw, and Freeland eventually replicate the skills of Frye if we lose him to a trade?

4) I don't think we should put the focus of trades on whether or not they help opponents in another division.  The big question is whether proposed trades will help the Blazers in the long run reach their goals.

by VegasNed on Jul 11, 2007 9:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No way
Frye's value is at an all-time low.  No need to dump him when all we can get for him is a guy like Battier.

by Samuelson on Jul 12, 2007 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm glad you brought up point #1.
This:
1) Frye is good enough to be a starter in the NBA.
How many years will he want to sit on the bench when he could
eventually be making more money starting for somebody else?

I've been meaning to hit that w/r/t The Frye Guy for a while now and never got around to it.

But here's the point: With Oden and LMA, we may have Frye NOW,
and we may have the option of retaining him for the duration of his rookie contract,
but we have NO chance of re-signing him after that.
He will want, deserve, and FETCH starter money,
and for all of how great he is for a $2.5mil bench guy (of starter quality),
is he a great bench guy of starter quality at starter money?
SOMEONE'S gonna pay him more than we'll be willing to offer him.

So! There are three options on this Frye dude:
1) Cash him in as part of a very attractive package
(attractive because HE'S IN IT at $2.5mil) for some serious SF talent.
2) Treat him like a rent-a-player--enjoy him while he's at $2.5mil,
and wave bye-bye to him when it's time for him to get P.A.I.D.
3) A combination of the two: Enjoy him now while he's cheap (like #2),
and when he's up for The Big Money, let him go in a judicious sign-and-trade:
Cash him in, yes, but for the value of his non-rookie contract,
rather than at his bargain price of $2.5mil.

#1 makes sense because, with him at 2.5mil, he can be the key
to prying away a player who might not be otherwise available.
(That's what makes Bynum so untouchable, you all know: His talent/price ratio.
Frye is, for now, a Bynum-type trade chip--someone worth a bit more than
his mandatory-for-trade-purposes matching value.)

#2 makes sense because, while Oden and LMA are so young,
we need more depth than we will in a couple of years,
after those two have gained greater stamina and reliability and finished their learning curve,
and are ready for more minutes thsan we can count on now.
We need a backup of Frye's quality now in a way we won't when he's up for renewal.
So, his status as a two-year rent-a-player fits the long-term plan.
He'd basically be a better, cheaper Magloire for two years.

#3 makes a LOT of sense--serve the rent-a-player purposes of #2,
and when that's up, cash him in--not in an underpriced way like Bynum,
but just as a free agent whose prime-years employer gives us something nice
for playing ball, like Seattle/Indy got that nifty trade exception for Shard/Peja.

#3 also has the biggest risk: We'd be taking more back in salary than under #1,
so the risk of taking on a not-worth-it guy just to "get SOMETHING of value" is there.
Worse, it means the piece we get for him wouldn't be here for a couple more years;
if it's a young, starting-quality small forward, I want him here NOW,
to grow and gel with the rest of this Blazer core.

And for those of you who doubt the premise of Frye not playing here for his next contract:
Get Real.
For now, because of the CBA as it applies to rookies,
he's gonna get sub-MLE money for 4 years no matter what,
and he knew that before he ever entered the draft, just like any other player.
For this time, what matters to him is being on a good team
that gives him minutes, a good environment, and the opportunity to winWinWIN.
He'll get all that in Portland, so this is good for him (not that he ASKED for this trade).
But when it's time to get paid with fewer price limits, all that changes.
He'll get paid starter money by a team that needs a starter's contribution,
and with Oden and LMA, that will NOT BE US. Count on it.

Let's put it another way...
There's a lot of respect for Channing Frye's game out there and that definitely bodes well for our depth.  Let me throw out a scenario to you Blazer fans and let me know what you think.

If the tables are turned and the Blazers had Shane Battier starting at the SF and the Rockets had Channing Frye, would you propose a trade that sends Shane Battier to the Rockets in order to acquire Channing Frye to come over and compete for backup minutes for the Blazers?

I realize some other players who have to be involved in this scenario to make the trade happen,...but the main participants would be Frye and Battier.

Another point to think about...Battier would be a great mentor for Outlaw.  I think Trout's game would pick up quite a bit with someone like Battier to show him the way.

by VegasNed on Jul 11, 2007 9:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Frye
can't be packaged for a while.  And since Battier's contract doesn't match up w/ Frye's, it's safe to say that Channing won't be involved in a Battier trade.

I'd do that trade
Channing for Battier straight up, not if we have to include Fernandez.

I mean even if Frye recognizes his potential so what? Unless he's going to be so good that he unseats Aldridge or Oden he will be a backup. We should do this trade even thought I am wary of Battier.

not sure this is worth its own diary so...
sort of off topic but KP was on primetime 1080 the fan today and talked a little about Rudy fernandez.  He said that Rudy was a top 12 or 15 player in this draft them.  Thats high praise from KP. When you think about fernandez as a 24 pick it sounds ok, but if you think of him as top 15 player on KP's draft board, it sounds a whole lot better.  I cant wait to see this guy

Battier's a quality player
but he basically replicates the skillset that we've just traded for in James Jones -- SF who's primarily known for defense, can spot up for open 3 pointers.  If we trade for another SF, I'd want to look at someone who's a different profile.

Like the RealGM boards have been talking about a possible Thrilla for Turkoglu trade.  I like that one quite a lot; I'd even throw in extra for that one.  More of an offensive guy, someone who can create their own shot (neither Jones nor Battier nor Martell can create their own offense -- Jones is actually probably the best out of that group, but that ain't saying much).  Would be a different look to throw at the opponent.

by howlingfantods on Jul 11, 2007 10:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Turk has a player option for 09-10.
I don't think we're gonna go there if we're stockpiling cap space.

by bfan on Jul 12, 2007 6:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Joel's contract
that we'd be sending out is basically the same $$/yr, but runs one year longer.  Making this trade wouldn't increase our cap figure at all, it'd knock one year off an obligation we already carry.

by howlingfantods on Jul 12, 2007 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
If you look at what players tend to do with their contracts, if they have a player option before they turn 30 while they're performing decently, they usually opt out and try to cash in one more time.

It's quite likely that this deal would actually help the Blazers as far as cap space is concerned... not hurt them.

Here you nothing that I say...?

Seriously, let's keep our killer diller back up PF/C with all the upside and good team fit, let our young guns at small forward have their year to show what they got and leave this team alone. If Webster, Outlaw, Jones and Miles (did I miss any?) can't do the job as a unit or if none of them shows that they will be good enough to fill the three spot in the future then we can make trades or sign someone near trade deadline or after the season.

I'm all for upgrading if possible and trying to win this year but not at the expense of a genuine quality player who might NOT want to leave in the future just because he's too good. A lot can happen, heart; heals; tonsils; mono?, we need Frye. We lose a big starter we're done for the season. With Frye, we're still competitive.

KP hasn't made a bad trade yet (and yes I doubted the Randolf Trade at first too) so I suspect he knows what an asset he has and will not dump him lightly.

Intersting point VegasNed
Would we keep Bat if we already had him to get Frye?
I don't know, maybe we would if you look at it in the reverse and... owe my head hurts. All I think I know is that we should just not trade Frye for Battier. As I said, Trade Rudy Tooty if we have to and a small forward but not for the Frychise.

is it possible
for us to stop coming up with hypothetical trade proposals? They are pointless to discuss, maybe it'd be somewhat appropriate to discuss a trade rumor, but a complete hypothetical is a little absurd.

We had 1000s of hypothetical Zach trades. Did anyone guess Zach, Dickau and Jones for Frye and Francis????

Let's discuss trades after they happen.

Not sure if you were
referring to my Thrilla for Turkoglu one, but it's apparently something that "Wheels" (I guess Brian Wheeler?  I'm not a local) was apparently talking up (i.e. a "rumor" not a "hypothetical") on 1080 today.

Don't tell me
PennCap discovered a loophole in the CBA where we use our mid-level exception to create a 30% trade kickers which we then use on Pryzbilla to create a trade exception which we use on James Jones which then becomes a sign-and-trade where we use the 25% of our salary cap to make a ten-team trade involving 40 players where we end up with Garnett and Kobe?

Battier = so overrated
This guy is nothing that great. When Houston basically traded Rudy Gay for him I was stunned. You said he was the co-captain of team USA, so I checked on how they did (they got 3rd place he averaged 4 points and 3 rebounds a game) and I don't know why that makes him so special, as I remember we had Stve Smith and ::In Sabonis' voice:: FIVE OLYMPIANS and that didn't get us much. No way are the Rockets winning the next title. This guy is not much better than Ime. He averaged less points per game than Trout, in more minutes, and his career high is 14ppg. He's a role player, as Frye will be for us, but the Rockets need a PF/C badly. Dikembe Mutombo is Oden's grandfather, and thus a couple of generation removed from siring Lebron and other than Yao they rely on Chuck Hayes and Stromile Swift. They would do that trade in a hearbeat. Oh yeah and if you can replace 6'11" guys so easily then why do NBA GMs hunt after them like the holy grail and then throw huge money at them?

During the half-time interview
that Jay Allen did with Tom Penn last night, Penn said "we're working on other things" ... meaning more playing with numbers to see what they can make happen.  No clues about what some of those "other things" might be, however.

He said he's having fun which is great to hear from our #1 number cruncher.  Of course most of us would have fun playing with PA's money...

by jorga on Jul 12, 2007 6:56 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If we go Frye for Battier
Signing Joe Smith should be seriously looked at.  With Frye gone, that leaves only Pryzbilla, LaFrenz and Outlaw (assuming he's resigned) backing up a 19 yr old rookie and a 21 yr old 2nd year player.

Of course this would create PT for Raef, who isn't exactly dog meat.  He gets unjustly criticized because his game isn't up to his salary.  That's not the same as having no game at all.

by timg56 on Jul 12, 2007 7:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Since Frye can't be packaged
and Battier's deal is much larger than Frye's, this hypothetical is completely moot.

Portland is keeping Frye this season, I'd put money on it.

Retort
  1. Frye can be traded in a package deal starting in a few weeks (so I've heard...something like 60 days after the NY trade?)

  2. The trade proposal would involve other players besides just Frye and Battier.  Probably Frye and James Jones for Battier...or something like that.  But the main point of contention is giving up Frye.

  3. Yes, Battier can be considered a glorified role player if you look at this stats.  A Houston paper stated that the Rockets were pleased with all facets of Battier's game except for his scoring ability.  He definitely is not a scorer.  He earns his money through the intangibles that he brings to the table (hustle, determination, leadership, oddly shaped skull, etc.)  His value is also created in the fact that he can hold the other team's best scorer well below his average,...think of Ozzie Smith's value to the Cardinals for taking away hits and runs from opposing team with his defense.  The contributions these types of guys make are difficult to quantify.

  4. Since when is being in your late twenties the kiss of death?  Players like Battier (think Bruce Bowen) who don't rely on athleticism usually don't detoriate until much later in their careers.  Battier is a skill/hustle kind of player.  He should last a good deal longer than the average NBA who relies a lot on athletic ability.

  5. I'm also tired of fairy tale trade proposals that make my mind explode.  I posted this trade proposal because I have reason to believe that this is more than just speculation.  Quick and Pritchard are leading us to believe something is brewing, something is brewing at the SF position, and we already knew Houston was a name that came up in rumors before the draft.

by VegasNed on Jul 12, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

<sigh>
  1.  Right, but he can't be traded now.  You didn't address that before.

  2.  Why are you so quick to give up Frye?  He has more value than Travis Outlaw and Joel Przybilla, yet he's the one you're giving up?   Again, Frye was untouchable last year and many teams were vying for his services.  One mixed up year later, he's ours.  I highly doubt his stock will drop much lower, so it makes no sense to move him now.  Might as well keep him around and pump up his stock a bit.

  3. I'd be all for this type of player in a few years, but at Battier's price and in Portland's current state, there's no reason to pick up a guy like that.  I'd rather have Ime Udoka for 4m without giving up anyone than dealing Frye and change for Battier.

  4. It's not his age now, it's his age in a few years when Portland gets better.  In 09-10 (Frye's contract year), I suspect that his value on the open market will be much higher than Battier's.  If you suspect that neither player will be on the team down the road, wouldn't you want to get the best value possible?

  5. That doesn't mean you have to construct trades that don't make sense for our team.  When the other team jumps at your proposal, you know you're getting fleeced.
- Sam

by Samuelson on Jul 12, 2007 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

sigh continued
Yeah, I love Frye's value right now.  He's a steal for what he is being paid.  Pryz is probably overpaid, although i would like to keep him so he can help develop Oden defensively with footwork and technique.  Don't think Houston wants Outlaw, and Trout won't be much of a bargain when we re-sign him for a higher amount.

Battier could really help the team with his experience and leadership.  I really do think Trout has a much better chance at fulfilling his potential with a player like Battier around.  I think quite a few players could learn a lot from players like Battier and Roy. I think Battier could be our SF for five to six years, and I just don't think there are going to be many SFs that come around that will be a better fit than Battier as far as skill, leadership, and value.

And as valuable as Frye is on the court, I think McRoberts will be able to step in and replicate what Frye can bring to the table.  Nice outside shot, good sized post player, etc.

Bottom line: I don't think we should trade for Battier just because we have an unbalanced roster.  Battier will help in the development of the team and is a great fit for them right now.  If we can trade for Battier and keep Channing Frye, then hats off to KP.  It would be really difficult considering what the Rockets need (PF).

And for what it's worth, if we do send a package deal to Houston, we would open up another valuable roster spot.

I'm just saying,

-I don't think the Blazers are going to want to 're-tool' at sf in 5-6 years when this team  has only been the power-house we'er thinking it will be in 3-4 years...We'd have to HOPE we have trade value elsewhere on this club at that time or cap-room for FA's. The draft will of course be moot for a starter because of time to develop and the drafting position will suck.

C Oden Zilla LaFrenz Frye

PG Jack Sergio Green

Let's let em play one year then look around.

I've said it before and I've said it again.

Rudy will be here next year. He will look the other teams in the eye and say "Hello, my name is Rudy Fernandez, you passed on me in the first round, prepare to die."

However...

Battier is good and would play D. They have a million (5 or 6 anyway) point guards and one wants out bad. Just don't trade from PF, C and Two guard to get em.

And finally, there are so many small forwards out there better than batt, can't we have one of them? Atlanta has like ten. Can't we have one of them?
