Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

an alternative at SF

I will go on the record and say I have no idea about whether this guy is a free agent or what kind of money he is making, but....

How about Matt Barnes?

Pros:
Would love to start
Shoots threes, good handle
Doesn't need to be the main guy

Cons:
Too wild for Nate?
Will have plenty of suitors if he is available

Anyways, I find the prospect, however realistic, intriguing.

Your thoughts?

I agree
about Anthony Johnson.  Solid vet, would be happy at 20 min a game and has some craft and wiles to pass on to the young guys.

Luke Walton
Walton is I think UFA.

I'm not sure we'd want him to start, but he could be a great role player off the bench.

If Outlaw is let go, Luke Walton could be a really smart signing for depth.

myself@j*pop are only discussing role players who best fit our "culture" and these 3 guys fit our needs like a glove.also l.walton is an ufa also a trade of zbo*dickau for j.childress*a.johnson and the 11th pick really fulfill are needs.a starting line-up is-jack,roy,childress,aldridge,and oden pretty damn scary hah matthewcc...

P.S.
I don't think he'll be traded. I see Buss leaving the lakers before Kobe.

Barnes
to me his success had a lot to do with the GS freewheeling style.  I'm not sure he'd be a good fit for our team.

by jksnake99 on May 30, 2007 10:22 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah...
An intriguing idea, but I'm fairly certain that he's not a "Nate guy."

Matt Barnes is an unrestricted free agent
and would probably be available for under the MLE.  I think I'd prefer to stick with Udoka, Webster and Outlaw while looking around for the 3 we want.

Should have posted here instead of the Jack line
How is it most people think the Blazers need a SF?  Try comparing Ime Udoka's numbers against Bruce Bowen & Raja Bell, two of the best rated defenders in the league and high on the list of "glue" guys, with Shane Battier, the ultimate "glue" guy.  Throw in Matt Barnes, who is an unrestricted free agent like Ime and raised his stock during the playoffs.

Ime has a higher FG% than any of them, is only slightly below Bell & Battier in FT% and much better than Bowen.  A better shot blocker and rebounder than Bowen or Bell.  The only criticism might be his assist numbers, but that's probably due to how the Blazers run their offense and Udoka's roll in it.

The guy has the makings of a shutdown defender in just his first full season, appears to be so well liked by his coaches and teammates that they lobbied hard to keep him on the team and is a local guy to boot.  And remember - his numbers ended up taking a hit the last month of the season as he played with a concussion.

Ime Udoka is exactly the one player I think the Blazers need more than just about any other.  He's the guy that will help ensure the 3 future All-Stars mesh as a unit.

by timg56 on May 30, 2007 4:59 PM PDT reply actions

the reason I brought up Barnes was
Udoka may not make it a full season with injury, I feel 20 min a game off the bench would suit him fine.  Webster, well lets be honest, he just didn't have the juice to take minutes from Roy or Udoka, how many unactive 1-4 or 0-5 performances did he have last year in his 15 min a game?  And Miles?  Nobody really believes he is gonna step in at starting SF next year do they?  So... yeah, small forward is a position we could address.  If we have to go with Udoka and hope he doesn't get hurt, I'm fine with that but Barnes has a lot of the stuff everybody says we needs at sf.

by JPop on May 30, 2007 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

We need a real starting SF
And while I hold out hope we might have one on our roster or that we may draft Durant, we need a real starting SF.

But Barnes is gonna about to be overpaid for how well he played in the playoffs, and even though I don't think he'll have the post-big-contract malaise, I don't think he's worth big bucks. (in this case, big bucks equals about the full MLE)  He's good for Golden State, but probably not for us.

I'd rather use what we got or draft a SF than to get a stop gap like Barnes.  He'll cost too much to be a role player off the bench, I'd rather give the minutes to Outlaw/Webster/Udoka, and we can do better.  But it's not a bad idea, he really did set himself apart last season.

agree with you mort
No way to Barnes. Absolutely no way, and if he doesn't resign with Golden State we'll never hear his name again. Mike James part 2. That's all this is.
Welcome Greg Oden

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
